Love his rough & tumble look. My dad always wore woolen jackets like that, so I have a bit of a soft spot for them. If those are Blundstones he's wearing, you can go anywhere & do anything in those shoes! I love mine. He's somehow reminding me of Heath Ledger though... which makes me feel a little sad.

Needless to say that your perspective and purpose is outstanding but if u could write a few lines about what u think about each of these that could be more educative and deeply entertaining as well.

Also about how u approach ur subjects to shoot- ur gear, journeys....

May be 'cutting edge' for NYC 20-somethings, but, come on, it's an everyday sight where I live. Are those some sort of $400 trendy designer jeans or something? Does he ever take his cigarette case...or whatever that is...out of his pocket?

From head to toe, some of the finest shades the color blue has to offer. Also, buttons undone, paint spackled on boots--accessories that work just as cleverly as barrettes in hair, polish on nails.

Anonymous Hautezone said ... (11:26 AM) :

He looks authentic, like a true working artist. I love the aged patina of his jeans, and the cell phone/wallet imprints. That takes some doing. Sort of vintage 'California Gold digger style'. It says "this is how I really live' not some contrived attitude towards 'chicness'.

The jacket says "its cold"! The shoes say "this is how I live/work comfortably". The paint splatter brings an attitude, that is just ... built in! I am secretly wondering what his hair is like, beneath the cap. Is is curly, slicked back or cut short. He does have a bit of Heath Leger to him.

He also looks like he can fix a tire and start a fire!

Scott, I wrote about you on my blog 'Scott Schuman behind the camera'.

Thanks a million!

J Crew men's will have this look next Fall I'm willing to bet, complete with paint spattered pre-distressed work boots and wallet/phone marks on the jeans. Love it, what a sexy gorgeous man. xx

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (11:33 AM) :

Fantastic jacket, looks like vintage, certainly not the kinds of fabric you see every day. I see people loving the imprint of his cell phone and wallet. For such lose-fit jeans, I suspect he might have done the sandpapering for effect, although it does look cool. Great outfit overall! Jorge from WPB

Blogger Paul Baxendale said ... (11:33 AM) :

Is he a preparator? Blundstones seem to be the de facto footwear for art handlers for some reason! I like his coat.

The paint splattered blundstones are a nice touch.

Blogger on the roof said ... (11:39 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:38 PM) :

Ah, the ubiquitous i-phone (or the outline of it in his jeans). To me, it completely ruins the look. Since when did the iphone become a fashion accessory?

Its all about that cigarette pack imprint on his jean pocket. you just know he always carries around some smokes

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:08 PM) :

Ruggedly Handsome; stylish in a proletariate kind of way. I love that he really gets a lot of use from his garb, especially his Blunnies. And the way he nonchalantly cuffed his wonderfully faded jeans is very appropo in this context. He just has a certain ease about his style, with which I'm sure he makes no big deal. It appears that he smokes, which I appreciate, although I'm only a social smoker when I drink...a lot! Anywayzzz...I appreciate his sense of style, and therefore, himself.

Anonymous Maryanne said ... (2:55 PM) :

amazing how jeans can look fantastic when worn daily and used daily for 'work'.

interesting that others will pay in the hundreds for a pair of jeans purchased off the rack to achieve this look.

the celestial blue of his jacket keeps popping up in various magazines as well as your website which has been showing bits of navy and various blues.

see a trend here.

Blogger Ivy said ... (3:25 PM) :

I love this all-American look. Classic, yet the details are so modern. The vintage wool coat in a one a kind teal, the jeans perfectly faded (with years of... ipods in his front pockets?) AND rolled in a carefree manner, paint-splattered boots, and a hood-like hat. Perfect example of working man's casual with today's crush on vintage.

Its so annoying when some of the commentators write things like "This isn't fashion." ! EVERYTHING THAT IS WORN IS FASHION!!!!!!!!! EVERYTHING THAT IS WORN IS FASHION!!!!! Why don't people understand that something doesn't have to be worn by celebrities in People Magazine or by Audrey Hepburn in a classic film for it to be fashion?!

This guy looks interesting and great- Regardless of how "normal" "plain" or "regular" this looks.

Some of the people who comment angrily on this things probably are the most mundance people, who are jealous and shouldn't be talking.

GREAT LOOK, GREAT PHOTOGRAPH, BEAUTIFUL COLORS. Enough said!

Blogger comme fraiche said ... (7:15 PM) :

Im bothered by how some readers can never be satisfied! In the NY Times article they say you take to many photographs of Anna Del Russo and white women and fashion shows- And yet here you are taking a beautiful photograph of a very interesting unusually dressed man, and they say its not exciting enough!

WHAT DO YOU GUYS EXPECT PEOPLE?!

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:45 PM) :

oh come on......forget the clothes; this guy's looks manage to stand out, even though he is well covered up. He's sexy ; ) not too pretty; but very manly, like someone said before; the kind of man that would build you a fire.

Blogger andrea.at.the.blue.door said ... (9:59 PM) :

I'm inclined to attribute the coat to Woolrich via L.L. Bean, a number of years ago. I have one just like it, though in a very reserved brown, not the glorious blue.

He looks to me like a man whose studio doesn't have quite enough heat.

Love the expression on his face and his nature so comfortable. But what I really want to know is how you find these perfect backgrounds in complimentary colors and muted tones of the same bright teal, on the same street as your subject. It's as if you see the setting and then ask this wonderful creature- "Will you stand over there please?".... wow. ...you are truly a painter of form and color and spirit!

Re. "Everything that's worn is fashion" )that would be the commentator who needs ALL CAPS to be heard): Yes, true. Great to see a guy back.
The comments fascinate me...we all judge so much.
He bought the jeans, wore them in, they're new, he bought them like that, he sanded them..
The pocket wear is cigarettes, a wallet, an iphone...its so great/its so uncool! He's "original", "authentic", "ordinary", "normal"... he's a cool painter, no he worked for Ralph, its all planned and contrived...
Look at the paint on his beaten up boots!...he just bought them like that...
He can light a fire n change a tire...no, he works in a fashion house.
One picture - a hundred different impressions (that maybe lost if we knew the 'real story'
I guess that's why we come back Scott, don't ever change! :-)

I really like this picture. Handsome guy comfortable in his own skin and not afraid of a camera. But dang, looks like each pocket (front pants) has a box of cigarettes! :)

Just like so many others, I love the authenticity of the look, so many try to fake the rough and tumble look with overpriced pathetically obvious designer clothes.

I don't freakin' get this pants problem that i guess is a trend!?!? I love his jacket. It reminds my of my dad's old vintage jacket...

Reminds me of Walton Ford, whom I went to RISD with, but this guy doesn't look like he's in his fifties. He's got a great painter style though, so maybe it is, and time has been good to him, just as the muses have!

this guy is my denim hero.

read a few comments wondering about the shoes. i think they are blundstones, australian work boots, they are lightweight but made of sturdy, waterproof leather. i highly recommend them for muck or everyday uses.

I live in manitoba and this is a classic canadia look. Only in nyc. I think it's fantastic. Add 3 inchs of snow and you've got winnipeg streets!
