Comments on "On the Street....Mercer St., New York"
Love the contrast of the graffiti in the background and the bright blue teal color of his coat!

Like the fading on his jeans. Reminds me of how my APC New Cures look now (i like my fit better)....Everything else is so so.
He is rugged and masculine. The kind of man who would build you a fire.

fantastic look...I love the right way
so many different shades of blue!! luv it!
I love the paint-spattered shoes. And him.
The shoes are cool! Seems to be pretty cold in NYC…
You totally took this pic because you want to steal his jeans. He's done a good job of wearing them in tho, I will give him that.
His bottom half looks a little grungy but I am digging his attitude and jacket.
is that mcQueen shoes?
Great details...
i like him!
The boots are dope i wonder if the spots are from working or done for style

nice shot!
interesting style

Love his rough & tumble look. My dad always wore woolen jackets like that, so I have a bit of a soft spot for them. If those are Blundstones he's wearing, you can go anywhere & do anything in those shoes! I love mine. He's somehow reminding me of Heath Ledger though... which makes me feel a little sad.
Needless to say that your perspective and purpose is outstanding but if u could write a few lines about what u think about each of these that could be more educative and deeply entertaining as well.
Also about how u approach ur subjects to shoot- ur gear, journeys....
me a photographer too

Love cuffed jeans. Great coat!
OH OH ! Hello dear...
http://aaliasniegorotchka.blogspot.com/
love the jacket! the color is amazing. he looks so authentic!

everything just works.
overall - very cool...very cool.
everything just works.
overall - very cool...very cool.
I love the worn imprint of his wallet in the pockets.
Love the colour of his coat x
May be 'cutting edge' for NYC 20-somethings, but, come on, it's an everyday sight where I live. Are those some sort of $400 trendy designer jeans or something? Does he ever take his cigarette case...or whatever that is...out of his pocket?
Cute :-)
Fanny
Waw! it's just great
I think I'm ready to get into the denim game.

Is that an Iphone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me.
Proleatarian , but not dumb... This "hat" makes it appear totally individualistic...
I think on Francis Ford Coppola's movie "Rumble Fish"(1983).
the jeans is beautiful, and the man too:)
I love his jacket and the worn jeans! More of those please. Thanks!
Istanbulboy
Great man look, super worker touch and sort of cool. I like this one.
i want those jeans!
sweet...

I like his jacket...the color the texture, everything.
love jeans and boots!

I love all of the different shades of blue in this image, the graffiti gives him a halo, what an angel.
www.cinchedatthewaist.com
Still freezing!xx
From head to toe, some of the finest shades the color blue has to offer. Also, buttons undone, paint spackled on boots--accessories that work just as cleverly as barrettes in hair, polish on nails.

Is it cold outside??
I'm curious to see what the female artists are wearing for their studio work days ...
Those paint-spattered boots look earned rather than bought. Refreshing to see the real thing for a change.
www.thesluicebox.com
He looks authentic, like a true working artist. I love the aged patina of his jeans, and the cell phone/wallet imprints. That takes some doing. Sort of vintage 'California Gold digger style'. It says "this is how I really live' not some contrived attitude towards 'chicness'.
The jacket says "its cold"! The shoes say "this is how I live/work comfortably". The paint splatter brings an attitude, that is just ... built in! I am secretly wondering what his hair is like, beneath the cap. Is is curly, slicked back or cut short. He does have a bit of Heath Leger to him.
He also looks like he can fix a tire and start a fire!
Scott, I wrote about you on my blog 'Scott Schuman behind the camera'.
Thanks a million!
Joy

J Crew men's will have this look next Fall I'm willing to bet, complete with paint spattered pre-distressed work boots and wallet/phone marks on the jeans. Love it, what a sexy gorgeous man. xx
Fantastic jacket, looks like vintage, certainly not the kinds of fabric you see every day. I see people loving the imprint of his cell phone and wallet. For such lose-fit jeans, I suspect he might have done the sandpapering for effect, although it does look cool. Great outfit overall! Jorge from WPB
Is he a preparator? Blundstones seem to be the de facto footwear for art handlers for some reason! I like his coat.
The paint splattered blundstones are a nice touch.
nice
It sure looks cold! But he manages to pull it off with such a rough and cool outfit. Like previously mentioned, it's refreshing to see something "normal".
Love Iben
Perhaps this "work-wear" trend has gone to far.....:-)
http://www.sprezza2raw.com/
It's a person that DOES something not just looking as if he was doing something. I think... And that blue colour, makes me think about Liguria
He looks cute someone get his number and then email me ;) haha yeah I know I'm a dork.
I think I heart him!

I think I heart him!
http://c-tree.blogspot.com/
Oh he is fine! I love the coat and the hat lets me know that while he looks like he could change a tire, he's probably actually in design...which is okay by me.
Fabulous jeans! I am not sure about the rest of the outfit.
I want HIM!
Oh come on, people, this isn't "fashion." it's a guy with dirty jeans, beat up shoes, an old jacket, and a hooded sweatshirt.
Ah, the ubiquitous i-phone (or the outline of it in his jeans). To me, it completely ruins the look. Since when did the iphone become a fashion accessory?
Cool outfit. Rugged. He looks like a painter.
I love his boots!
http://fashiondoesntexist.blogspot.com/
I adore this guy... His look is so utilitarian, yet entirely original. I love how you can see the outline of his wallet (phone?) on his pockets.
Hand drawn:
My Closet in Sketches
love the paint splatter on his boots. as if he just finished the grafitti behind him.
cheers,
JJ Scholl
This is on fire! He looks like he is on his way to spending a day being coolly chill and fashionably adept.
He reminds me of my brother, who is proletarian. Everything old but fashionable, he does the best he can on little money.
He reminds me of a young Ewan McGregor. And that's a good thing.
Right now, in your photographs, I see ... cold people!
There is something so nostalgic of 50's/60's abstract expressionism in paint speckled shoes.
I have vibes that this guy is for real, not a poser or fashion victim.
Dude, pants r so grungy. Otherwise HOT
OMG I fell in love! He is wonderful!
Its all about that cigarette pack imprint on his jean pocket. you just know he always carries around some smokes
Ruggedly Handsome; stylish in a proletariate kind of way. I love that he really gets a lot of use from his garb, especially his Blunnies. And the way he nonchalantly cuffed his wonderfully faded jeans is very appropo in this context. He just has a certain ease about his style, with which I'm sure he makes no big deal. It appears that he smokes, which I appreciate, although I'm only a social smoker when I drink...a lot! Anywayzzz...I appreciate his sense of style, and therefore, himself.
For those wondering about the jacket, it looks like a Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser to me.
i like the background :D xxx <3
http://theglamorousmess.blogspot.com
OHHHHH! I'm falling in love!...
cool dude
http://www.informalthing.blogspot.com
I like the colour of his coat, and the background is pretty cool.
http://fascinationforfashion-akm.blogspot.com/
all those pockets on his coat, and yet his jean pockets are stuffed with stuff. what a shame.
amazing how jeans can look fantastic when worn daily and used daily for 'work'.
interesting that others will pay in the hundreds for a pair of jeans purchased off the rack to achieve this look.
the celestial blue of his jacket keeps popping up in various magazines as well as your website which has been showing bits of navy and various blues.
see a trend here.
rugged and ready.
i am dying to know about this man's work. where can one see?
I love this all-American look. Classic, yet the details are so modern. The vintage wool coat in a one a kind teal, the jeans perfectly faded (with years of... ipods in his front pockets?) AND rolled in a carefree manner, paint-splattered boots, and a hood-like hat. Perfect example of working man's casual with today's crush on vintage.
pikeandpoppy.blogspot.com
...the colors? Leaves me cold.
I'm looking for interesting shapes, unique perspectives, for play.
Sorry, Handsome.
love, love, love this.
His shoes are amazing. loved the disarray rolled up from his pants
The prints of the wallet or i don t what on the pockets. so funny
love this photo! amazing!
http://ilfilodiperlevintage.blogspot.com/
For some reason men who look like this (not too polished, rugged) always make me wonder what it would be like to kiss them. I don't think he'd mess around, he'd know exactly what to do. hmmmm melt.
Interesting mix, it looks like he was painting earlier, and decided to get a fashionable with what he had, i like the idea of the paint on the shoes, maybe he knows something we dont...
http://elitistview.blogspot.com/
i can't make out what's happening on his head there but those jeans he's rocking are quite nice.

Its so annoying when some of the commentators write things like "This isn't fashion." ! EVERYTHING THAT IS WORN IS FASHION!!!!!!!!! EVERYTHING THAT IS WORN IS FASHION!!!!! Why don't people understand that something doesn't have to be worn by celebrities in People Magazine or by Audrey Hepburn in a classic film for it to be fashion?!
This guy looks interesting and great- Regardless of how "normal" "plain" or "regular" this looks.
Some of the people who comment angrily on this things probably are the most mundance people, who are jealous and shouldn't be talking.
GREAT LOOK, GREAT PHOTOGRAPH, BEAUTIFUL COLORS. Enough said!
Looks like a guy who has to work for a living, not one out looking for attention.
Im bothered by how some readers can never be satisfied! In the NY Times article they say you take to many photographs of Anna Del Russo and white women and fashion shows- And yet here you are taking a beautiful photograph of a very interesting unusually dressed man, and they say its not exciting enough!
WHAT DO YOU GUYS EXPECT PEOPLE?!
oh come on......forget the clothes; this guy's looks manage to stand out, even though he is well covered up. He's sexy ; ) not too pretty; but very manly, like someone said before; the kind of man that would build you a fire.
The shoes. The smile.
http://www.riotgrrrltheory.net/
I love the jeans, they look lived in, and like they have been loved forever. His style is functional, and almost rugged.
My Heart Blogged
he's so manly and real looking. everything he's wearing is worn in and i love that.
finally hatachi
I'm inclined to attribute the coat to Woolrich via L.L. Bean, a number of years ago. I have one just like it, though in a very reserved brown, not the glorious blue.
He looks to me like a man whose studio doesn't have quite enough heat.
Jeans look like they are from A.P.C. New Standard style.
FYI Up here in Alaska, this type of Woolrich jackets are known as 'Halibut Jackets' and everyone owns at least one. It's cool to see them on The Sartorialist.
Specifically, Woolrich calls it the Original Stag Jacket...
nice shot)interesting contrast!

Just...perfect.
it looks ordinary
hot ....love it
http://ateriammt.blogspot.com/
i <3 RRL as does he....
It's nice to see almost everybody dressed up in other country. In my country the Philippines, very few people dress up.
http://me-plusmycamera.blogspot.com/
Nice to see some genuine wear on the jeans, as opposed to the pre-fab stuff. (Obviously a two-pack-a-day guy.
Love the expression on his face and his nature so comfortable. But what I really want to know is how you find these perfect backgrounds in complimentary colors and muted tones of the same bright teal, on the same street as your subject. It's as if you see the setting and then ask this wonderful creature- "Will you stand over there please?".... wow. ...you are truly a painter of form and color and spirit!
He looks a like an artist painter.
WIsh I could see his hands
Wow!
So sexy! Jeans reminds me of James Dean.
To Anonymous who said "This isn't 'fashion'": You're right. This is style. And it's much, much better.
I love the worn-out patterns of the phones/whatever he carries in his front pockets!
love this pic so much, great background too! well done!
www.abitoffashion.com
I love the little spots that look like paint on his shoes....
Loving the double denim look.
He looks very cold tho.. bruuuuu
I love that we can see the things in his pockets!
I love his look, casual and cool
I love the military jacket.. I just got an Ike jacket last week. The color of his jacket is amazing. Love the look!
Yay A man! I thought you forgot us.
Jeans are Double RL/RRL....APC? Whats that?... Blundstones, paint is all me..
I really can't pay attention on what he is wearing, really... He is so handsome! the only thing I can think right now is how to UNDRESS him...
oh lord, look that face.He can wear a potato sack and he will be totally hot.And WAIT.all that and I just saw his face...
Like the jacket shoes and hat..
Cell phone fades are not so cool...
mmm he's lovely. did you happen to also get contact information?
Yummy! I want to eat him!
Great colours. Love it. Want a jacket in this shade, and worn down like this...beautiful.
I'm loving the blues and well-worn jeans.
I love well-worn mens jeans.
I want those jeans.
wonderfullllll
http://myatypicalmantality.blogspot.com/
Re. "Everything that's worn is fashion" )that would be the commentator who needs ALL CAPS to be heard): Yes, true. But there is interesting fashion and dull fashion; I--many of us--find this division/disagreement fascinating, and believe that dissenters should not be shouted down any more than we should establish a dress code, whether of the interesting fashion nor the dull.
But I would say, Keep your pants on.
Like! He totally looks like the guy in Nip/Tuck.
This is a very good looking man with a nice, approachable, casual style. Wish the city had more like him.
I love everything about this photo...his jeans, the way his image jumps out against the background, down to the paint splatter on his boots....amazing.
::SWOON!::
I guess it is that time of the year huh?
windowshopz.com
can't go wrong with a pair of blundstone boots
Keep up the good work!
Don't get me wrong but a dirty man can be very sexy! lol
Nice shoes! ;-)

beautifull colors. loving the shoes. ,

this reminds me of heath ledger in brokeback mountain
He's got that Indie/hippie vibe going on, can almost smell the patchouli! See this look here in Portland too. Looking good.
Is it stupid to say that I think he's really sexy?
He is sexy indeed! :) Like the colors of this pic so much! <3

I agree with another comment I saw, if you just left a sentence or two on why you chose to photograph each subject it would be very educational. I can only guess myself.
he definetely is a HOTTIE...
if he is not gay I will make an extra effort and take him with me anyway...
Nice clothes indeed. I will wash them while we have breakfast.
Don't know why but I love this! Agree with other commenters, this is style. Very cool!
Awesome!
I would love this man if he turned and had some gorgeous long blonde dreadlocks.. non?
www.tilleysvintage.blogspot.com
He used to work at RRL. Always cool, understated and effortless in his daily attire.
A true taste of the american sportswear! Balmain could steal this look right off the bat and rock it on their next collection.
yummy
Someone commented that this is not fashion. Maybe this isn't "fashion" but he certainly has "style". There are tons of men that wear dirty jeans and beat up shoes, and they don't come out looking like this!!
I think it's a pack of smokes. The edges are too hard to be a wallet, and too pronounced to be an iphone.
For whatever reason, this is a great shot!!
marry me
love the boots
the photo is great. the outfit is more than ordinary - come to olympia washington. the style is inspiring.
so NY artist style, love it !
Rugged, pretty awesome, the sort of stuff, everyone could wear.
Wonderfully rugged and artistic looking at the same time.
A nod to that fellow for making a coat that colour look so damn good.
I dunno why, this is quite a simple outfit, but I just love this photo
he looks like Sting!
You know, I come back every day to look at this photo and read the comments. I'm starting to fear that if I ever see him on the street I'll ask him for his autograph.
He wore those jeans out, that is not an ipod in his pocket, his blunnies are beaten all by him, and he is full of style. You guys are jealous!
i'm ready to marry this man! if I see him on the street, i'm taking him DOWN! :)
This look is just like perfect for the environment and the person, awesome!
Nice outfit, but it still doesn't obscure his white collar.
Sooooooooooooooooo hot!
love everything this dude has on
Great to see a guy back.
The comments fascinate me...we all judge so much.
He bought the jeans, wore them in, they're new, he bought them like that, he sanded them..
The pocket wear is cigarettes, a wallet, an iphone...its so great/its so uncool! He's "original", "authentic", "ordinary", "normal"... he's a cool painter, no he worked for Ralph, its all planned and contrived...
Look at the paint on his beaten up boots!...he just bought them like that...
He can light a fire n change a tire...no, he works in a fashion house.
One picture - a hundred different impressions (that maybe lost if we knew the 'real story'
I guess that's why we come back Scott, don't ever change! :-)
yeah yeah, love the look and the photo is fantastic (just like all the other looks and photographs that i have become addicted to) but what i want to know is ;
is that an ipod or a packet of cigatrettes in you pockets?or both?or are you just happy to see me?
i like that man i like hies trousers and the colour of the jacket its perfect du to his bright skin.
bur sad rhat i ll neverknow about his hair and what his hands about
i want to know him. thank you for spotting simple sexy men from time to time.
I really like this picture. Handsome guy comfortable in his own skin and not afraid of a camera. But dang, looks like each pocket (front pants) has a box of cigarettes! :)

Like it!
Just like so many others, I love the authenticity of the look, so many try to fake the rough and tumble look with overpriced pathetically obvious designer clothes.
sooo sexy.
I don't freakin' get this pants problem that i guess is a trend!?!? I love his jacket. It reminds my of my dad's old vintage jacket...
goofy pants
Perfectly perfect.
Reminds me of Walton Ford, whom I went to RISD with, but this guy doesn't look like he's in his fifties. He's got a great painter style though, so maybe it is, and time has been good to him, just as the muses have!
this guy is my denim hero.
i used to work with this guy..his name is Kevin. he works for RRL
read a few comments wondering about the shoes. i think they are blundstones, australian work boots, they are lightweight but made of sturdy, waterproof leather. i highly recommend them for muck or everyday uses.
I live in manitoba and this is a classic canadia look. Only in nyc. I think it's fantastic. Add 3 inchs of snow and you've got winnipeg streets!
Spettacolare, mi piace!
www.design-with-love.blogspot.com
I love the way his phone and wallet have faded the pockets.
This has always been my favorite detail of mens jeans.
GREAT.
