The Casting, Paris

Last week I held a casting for "real girls" to be featured in an advertising project.

The young ladies that showed up were so cool I thought I'd share some of my reference photos.

Blogger Lucy Spartalis said ... (7:07 AM) :

I can't describe how much I love the socks/tights with leather strappy sandals look. So good to be able to wear my summer platforms in the cooler months!

Beautiful shots Sart, as always.

Anonymous greybreaks said ... (7:10 AM) :

love, love, love, want the glasses in the second photo.

Blogger ZikA said ... (7:13 AM) :

Love the sandals...incredible how they give a touch of spring to the whole style..!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:13 AM) :

lovely photos - the sandals in the 1st and 3rd photo are great.

Blogger WE SPY WITH MY LITTLE i said ... (7:13 AM) :

Picy No. 1 you win! combination of fabrics and textures! we like!

Anonymous Sissi said ... (7:38 AM) :

In love with the 3rd look!

Sandals with socks were just perfect.

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:41 AM) :

I love her tights in the first pic!

Blogger Beverly. said ... (7:41 AM) :

Though these are nice outfits, can't say that I like any of them.

Blogger Mahala said ... (7:46 AM) :

I love how classic pieces like a denim shirt and khakis can be so easily updated with current style elements like the rolled cuff and platform sandals. Some things just never lose their intrinsic value and attractiveness..

Blogger Gaia said ... (7:48 AM) :

I love the second girl...Don't you come to Italy to do a casting?

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:59 AM) :

beautiful looks, congratulations.
I like leather bels.

Anonymous The Photodiarist said ... (8:26 AM) :

These are fantastic, Scott. Similar but different from your streetstyle photos. I love the outfit in the first , the smile of the girl in the second and the confidence of the girl in the third. Do you use your 5d Mk II and 50mm lens for work that you do for clients or do you rent another camera/lens?

Blogger The Shitty Astrologer said ... (8:31 AM) :

The captures make them look like professional models...

Blogger Chia said ... (8:34 AM) :

Well! let me tell you that THAT was a great idea!
Great shots, as always!!!

Blogger Patient x said ... (8:38 AM) :

so beautiful! i adore the third outfit.

Blogger V.V. said ... (8:49 AM) :

It seems that burberry's last collection made its' effect...socks + sandals. First pic, great mix of textures!

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (8:58 AM) :

Love the suiting and styling in the first shot.

Blogger Izzen said ... (9:05 AM) :

Oh, they're all so gorgeous! I hate how some people say fashion is bad because it makes people feel like they are physically inferior when they send perfectly-formed models down the runway. These pictures prove that fashion is for everyone and can make anyone look fabulous!

Blogger Brummagem Joe said ... (9:11 AM) :

These girls look wonderful particularly the one in the knit shorts.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

The first woman's look is the best--she makes the most of her long luscious legs. Great soft tones broken up by the black too. Stefano Pilates has a great sense of style. I have read of him before and appreciate his perspective of fashion.

Blogger stylespotterfashionblogger said ... (9:14 AM) :

I love the bottom photo. She is very very beautiful!

Blogger KohCo said ... (9:18 AM) :

I absolutely adore the first photo with the matching knit short suit...the simple jewellery and the basic black top. It's simple, classic and yet really unusual and fun (the blazer, shorts and tights look that is) and the way she knotted the belt is just ingenious.

Blogger MAC said ... (9:23 AM) :

i love the first outfit!! the super cute short i wanna buy!

Anonymous modessentielle said ... (9:23 AM) :

paris so nice

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:25 AM) :

Très belles et surtout Virginie!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:29 AM) :

"Real girls"? Really? These are models, c'mon.

Anonymous MiA said ... (9:33 AM) :

I really like the outfit on the first photo!!

http://miamarionette.blogspot.com/

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 AM) :

ok, it might looks like I have memorized the entire blog but I randomnly ended up on 24/03/2009 and it's the same girl (the first one)! Great style and curls then and great style and curls now.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:40 AM) :

Love them all. I'm going to die if I can't get some of these wooden platforms!

Blogger davidikus said ... (9:44 AM) :

Aren't all girls real, even models? Or are they really made of thin air and glossy paper?

Many models on the catwalks are rather scary-skinny and dis-gracious nowadays anyhow, so these unusual looks interest me quite a lot. The women you show are really feminine. I really look forward to seeing (some of) them in your ad. Keep us posted.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:48 AM) :

Sartorialstylish!

Anonymous Suzanne said ... (9:49 AM) :

I adore the shorts from the top picture and glasses from the middle picture.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 AM) :

The first outfit is so interesting. I love the colors, the fact that her shorts are knit, the way the jacket looks like it was made for those shorts, the way the buttons match the belt, the way the knit of the shorts has a kind of ribbing that is echoed in the tights.
Girl No. 2 has tons of charm.
No. 3 reminds me too much of the '80s. Or was that the late '70s? Anyway, been there done that.

Blogger Juli said ... (9:56 AM) :

REAL women rock! Why doesn't the fashion industry use more "gals off the street" in its print work? Is it really all that hard to work with non-professionals?

Blogger Rock Couture said ... (10:06 AM) :

I love the style in the first photo!

Blogger londonblagger said ... (10:13 AM) :

These girls all look great but why the term "real girls"? We all know that it is just a marketing gimmick at this stage and if these are "real girls" what does that make everyone else?

Blogger The Sluice Box said ... (10:13 AM) :

I'm struck by how their style is intentional yet not overly done. Looks great.

I think it's the coolest.

Blogger U-NI-TY said ... (10:15 AM) :

Nice outfits, great styles.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:32 AM) :

wow! what gorgeous ladies. I recognize one of them from photos of yours from the past. I have to say that it's because of people like this (and of course your beautiful work) that I LOVE following your blog. It's so much more exciting to me than many of the campaign spreads or runway shows that I see each season.

Anonymous T H E F A T T A C K said ... (10:44 AM) :

The girl on the first photo is amazing! She's so stylish! I love her look!

THX SAR!

Ciao Ciao
Just an observation.

Blogger BB said ... (11:19 AM) :

i want the first gal's look from head-to-toe. so lovely.

Anonymous Marigail said ... (11:22 AM) :

Self confidence is so alluring.

Blogger Jocy said ... (11:29 AM) :

Oh my goodness, I love these pictures. Intentional, but not-overdone. Yes, isn't that Parisienne style? At least, that's how I see it. Wonderful.

Anonymous flowerchildstyle.blogspot.com said ... (11:29 AM) :

I love all three styles!Very natural and simple yet beautiful!

xoxo

Blogger RosieBee said ... (11:32 AM) :

These are fantastic photos but i'm just wondering whether you consider these women "real"? They are all skinnier than our average woman and, although beautiful, are not our average girl. Would you ever consider using women of sizes six and up? Using their beautiful curves and getting the idea that women with legitimately AVERAGE weight are normal, telling us all that we dont need to alter our genes to become like these models we see in mass media every single day.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (11:41 AM) :

to RosieBee
yes these girls are "real" but above average

Blogger leddy said ... (11:58 AM) :

hate to be a drag, but shorts with tights and tights with sandals is so ugly. sorry.

Blogger Laura said ... (12:01 PM) :

The first dress is wonderful!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

I'm all for using real woman, but I never get the whole argument for use 'curvacious' (generally overweight) woman (size 12 is the average woman size in the uk, which on an average height woman-5'4- normally puts them in the obese health category), Surely thats like promoting bad health? Thats not to say they cant look beautiful, larger woman most certainly can (and i dont think size 12 is large either!) and i totally agree that super skinny is not cool either, but i'd rather see healthy, fit thin people than either extremes.

Blogger Gracie said ... (12:11 PM) :

The photos (and the girls) are so fresh. They look like Spring and Summer rolled together. Wonderful photos.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (12:39 PM) :

I'm in favor for real ladies as to fake / celeb ones.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

Girl number one has beautiful hair, and i love her look. The second is also cute, but the third "real girl" just looks like a flat-out model. She has a great outfit on, though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:51 PM) :

Can someone please explain the appeal of the plastic glasses? I think they look terrible on everyone! Didn't we all try to avoid wearing big, dorky glasses in the 80's? There are going to be a lot of "What was I thinking" photos 10 years from now.

That said, photos are beautiful, as always.

Blogger Donna Camacho said ... (12:56 PM) :

These photos look so untouched and real =) lovesit! and I especially adore the outfit worn in the first photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

love these outfits they are so caual but still so cool! a great way to get a cool casual look i have found is by whearing a chintiandparker T-shirt! which are great!!!!

Blogger Caddy said ... (1:19 PM) :

The first shot is my favorite, her outfit shine and so does her confidence!

Anonymous Veevre said ... (1:19 PM) :

I am in love with the style of all three girls. The socks and sandals look, the classic khaki and chambray outfit, everything.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:28 PM) :

cute ...but those "real girls" all kinda look like models. lol.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:53 PM) :

Wherever did #1 get those shorts? They are sublime....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:02 PM) :

Where do all the woman buy there shoes omg LOVE them....

the bottom look is great, the denim shirt, high waisted khakis with the woven belt (that matches the shoes perfectly. and the dark socks are a nice touch!)

magnifique

Blogger Julia, the Thanksgiving Girl said ... (4:12 PM) :

What cool girls indeed! Hopefully we'll see some more in the upcomign posts? :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:21 PM) :

Love the girl with the glasses. As a personage who has had to wear glasses since i was three, and had to put up with the widely circulated view that a girl with glasses will never find a man, i am happy that they are being appreciated in this way. Big glasses are fun--why bother trying to hide the fact you are wearing glasses. I don't think she will regret this pair; it shows she looks happy, who could regret that?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:42 PM) :

My dad wants his chinos from the 1980's back.....

Sorry, but I don't think this is stylish or flattering, esp. on such a cute girl.

i especially love that first outfit, those shorts are fabulous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:47 PM) :

A note to some of my fellows,
These girls are still "real girls" even though they're great looking and stylish. A beautiful girl does not a supermodel make, and by contrast, many of the best models may not be the prettiest girl you've ever seen.

And to Scott, "real" or "fake" or "model" or whatever, these photographs and looks are so spectacular! I'm amazed that you manage to work your magic with the lighting even indoors.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:02 PM) :

I find interesting that you use the term 'real' to refer to these women. I know it's rhetorical but interesting nonetheless. Real dichotomises with fake, but also with ideal.

I, being part of the 'real' lot, loved this pictures because of their character independence I found the women true to themselves(their style, their clothes, their whole persona). At least that's what I thought when I saw the shots.

ebay auction for charity sounds good...but it wouild be cool if anyone, even those without ebay or blogger accounts can have a chance.

Perhaps the contest would be the first person to identify the pictoral reference from a page of the celine book, though it would have to be a page other than the ones pictured to be fair. To verify each person can submit a comment with a code word or initials or e-mail address. Instead of posting the comment you could keep it and e-mail or something the winner. Though, if you were going to have a one question contest it would be easier to just e-mail you the answer (maybe you create a temporary e-mail address we can send answers to?)

Great pics as usual!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:29 PM) :

Sorry to break it to you but - well dressed, skinny, tall girls on unwalkable heels are not "real". But good luck searching...

That said the girls are wonderful, of course.

Anonymous gih said ... (10:32 PM) :

That's a lovely pose. The two girls are very attractive.

Anonymous fashionweed said ... (11:04 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 PM) :

Scott, I'm glad you put "real girls" in quotes since all of these ladies are thinner and prettier that real girls- not sure where you're finding these "average" girls- also, the last photo, girl in khakis, looks like it was pulled from adverts for The Gap-yikes!!!

Blogger Mary said ... (12:09 AM) :

I love the last girl's look- rolling up pleated khakis? Chambray shirts? Platform sandals? So fresh, so special. "Sart", you are a dream.

Anonymous GUGA said ... (1:51 AM) :

Whats wrong with the girls these days? those ultra long hair are not in or hot.... the first girl is amazingly well dressed..but that hair is like a tsunami in paradise.... waves taking away the beauty.....have a haircut..and have some fun... i would make it really short and make the color ultra blonde....assymetrically done... that would be perfect for her long face... once again.. maria bethania is starting a witch trend... dont go out tonight!
