On the Street......Nicole, Berlin

I'm in Berlin for the next two days between the men's shows in Milan and Paris. As you can tell I have been jumping around a lot lately. You will soon be seeing lots of images from Pitti, Milan, Berlin, Paris, Venice, and finally back to Sao Paulo. I kind of love mixing up the images from these cities. It was very warm in Florence and very cool here in Berlin which leads to a really great contrast in Summer looks - it's difficult for me to pack clothes for a trip like this!

Blogger antipodienne said ... (7:35 AM) :

Fantastic silhouette. Little flashes of white face, hands, shoes and cigarette like punctuation marks on the black.

Check out my blog:

Blogger Barbara said ... (8:40 AM) :

I didn't expect those shoes when I scrolled down. I much anticipated a classic patent heel. Wow!

Blogger kerfuffler said ... (8:46 AM) :

Oh look, they said it would happen, and it's true! Obama has made smoking fashionable among young people all around the world.

But the pallor argues against the total domination of fashion by American pres.

That jumper is GORGEOUS!
I want...

Blogger Thomas Modeen said ... (8:54 AM) :

I wonder if the matching white cigarette and shoes, providing a striking contrast to the remains of the ensemble, was planned..?

She looks so cool :D It's so funky, everything is black and then white shoes :D

Peace and love !

on a hot day like today, a photo like this brings a slight whiff of relief. but i´ll stop moaning and enjoy the warm breeze now.

Blogger Johanna said ... (9:10 AM) :

I love this. I'm always drawn to cool, short haircuts and dramatic necklines, and she's definitely got both. Great shot, Scott.

Blogger Lorien Wood said ... (9:14 AM) :

She looks like an Erte drawing!

Anonymous Christopher Benton said ... (9:17 AM) :

I love her parenthetical stance (assuming one can be compared to punctuation.) That cigarette is certainly forgiven by the addition of those white shoes which are surely there in defiance of all of that black.

Anonymous Berlinessa_in_New_York said ... (9:27 AM) :

Oh. I'm looking forward to all the Berlin styles you'll be posting. Snap away!

Blogger Noa Raviv said ... (9:30 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:23 PM) :

The best part of this photo is she isn't posing. Real beauty is translated and not trying to hard to manifest itself. I love this and I also love that you have been capturing a lot of smokers... was this intentional?

Blogger Thais said ... (12:26 PM) :

Ha, that would be a tricky packing situation!!

Love this shot, she's so gorgeous and dramatic in all black and shockingly white shoes!!

Blogger Rella said ... (1:44 PM) :

I used to have this haircut, I miss it, she's very androgynous, I appreciate it. It's all attitude. And the cowl neck. And her eyebrows are great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:54 PM) :

Isn't it great to have visible self-assurance? I love it~!

Blogger Me said ... (2:20 PM) :

One of my favorites, yet. Proportion works nicely with tone to accentuate the impression of mystery through honesty. It's not just the disparity between the white and the black -- it's the maturity of the collar with the naiveté of the shoe, the feminine left wrist with the confident right. A covered up Manet's Olympia -- that direct stare, the suggestion of a smile, and one of my favorite concepts, the idea of small, understated grandeur.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:25 PM) :

Unlucky that it was cold. I was in Berlin beginning of the month and it was really hot. And Liz, no it's normally not cold in Berlin in summer - rather pretty hot (and freezing cold in winter. Continental climate, you know...)

Anonymous funeral parade said ... (2:31 PM) :

i am in loovveee w/ this entire outfit even the cigarette.

Anonymous Thomas Sing said ... (2:44 PM) :

I am in love with her tunic. I want one NOW! (For the fall/winter, anyway.)

Blogger J. said ... (3:03 PM) :

Her outfit is so masculine yet her face exudes with femininity! love it, love it, love it!

Blogger Nieci said ... (3:05 PM) :

I would like to know what type of awards this blog has won?? Whatever they are its not enough. The clean, impeccable, emotion in these images is something almost eerie. Exceptional work as always.

Anonymous Humbolt said ... (3:12 PM) :

Aww, Berlin! Welcome to Germany! Unfortunately bad weather will welcome you! Don't spend too much time in the well known Kurfürstendamm and Unter den Linden, but also go out to Weinmeisterstr. and environment to check the smaller shops! Have fun!

Blogger Daisy said ... (3:19 PM) :

She is gorgeous, what a great shot Sart.

She reminds me of a very cool friend of mine named Francis, she has very thin legs and loves wearing outfits like this.

Blogger amalie said ... (3:54 PM) :

i follow the blog stil in berlin and this outfit is quite alike the others at stil in berlin . so in other words this is a typical berlin outfit ... black/white, cropped , big jackets . yeah you get it . i love it though

one of your top photos, the composition is amazing!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:25 AM) :

she is stunning... yet after your fort greene photos and the sheer fact that it is SUMMER, i have been dying to see some warmth, some vivacity, some happiness? she looks so pale.. and unhealthy. that cigarette, while it may 'complete her entire look' is horrid! plus, it is so hot that massive sweater is makin me sweat!! the girl is a beauty but she needs some sun!

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (6:16 AM) :

Garace will be in Amsterdam, this summer (july). Are you coming as well?

I love this picture of Nicole. She's a beauty.'s a bit too warm to dress like this in this period.

Blogger Nicole Then said ... (6:39 AM) :

Anonymous I said ... (8:14 AM) :

everything matches but the shoes, so done and overly done...

Blogger B3PA said ... (10:10 AM) :

she seems a model because of her static but so lively mood and pose... I love her haircut and I'm thinking about doing somenthing similar for the summer!

Anonymous Debarge said ... (11:02 AM) :

very inspiring!
(i'm so late but i neeeeeeeeed layers for the southern winterrrrrr!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:28 AM) :

Shoes are great, but I just find tight leggings/pants so ugly. Can't help it, Often the leg looks too fat. I try to think of the 18th Century to get a feel for the look of tight pants, and that helps, but it still doesn't quite work. And I love oversized tops, so what is my problem? Better with boots, but still, can't get used to it. And so many young people are wearing that now.

Blogger itchy said ... (12:38 PM) :

although it's all black, it's extraordinary

Blogger denny wong said ... (2:58 PM) :

Gorgeous! She's really cool!

Blogger missbuckmaster said ... (3:05 PM) :

ugh. technically lovely but please, please, no more cigarettes. it ruins any look for me because all I can think of is how horrid one - and one's pretty clothes - must smell...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:23 PM) :

I was just waiting for you to get to Berlin. There's quite a fashion scene developing here - and she just incorporates it so perfectly.

Blogger Icons said ... (4:07 PM) :

get a look at it!it's new!

Blogger Jennifer said ... (4:25 PM) :

Absolutely lovely. A perfect example of making smoking look "cool" ha

Blogger yac said ... (4:30 PM) :

Nifty outfit, lovin' the shawl collar type thing going on and of course the footwear - though she must be sweating up a storm in there, it really isn't *that* cold here right now, come on :P

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:48 PM) :

Photos like this, while beautiful, are the reason smoking has retained such a stylish image in our society. If she dropped the cig before the shoot, she might have to portray confidence without her deadly crutch.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:50 PM) :

She would be the epitome of cool if she would just lose the ciggy.

Anonymous Questioner said ... (4:51 PM) :

Beautiful girl and great coat, but the shoes look kind of like nurse shoes to me. I think that her pose may make the shoes look chunkier because you can see part of her left foot and it blends in with her right foot.

Love the juxtaposition of the modern girl with the old building.

Blogger Jullie Alonso said ... (5:06 PM) :

what a beautiful pic,

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 PM) :

I think she looks cool but it´s a "typical" berlin style ... soooo many people dress like this in Berlin. Nice picture tough.

Blogger Saving Sensibility said ... (12:50 AM) :

Stunning androgeny.

Anonymous pedaggogled said ... (1:09 AM) :

She reminds me of a really well drawn anime character having one last cigarette before preparing to defeat zombie robots, etc.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:59 AM) :

the shoes are a bit clunky for me but everything else looks SO good, it doesnt matter. i mean really, look at that stance. and her face and hair? stunning. better than a photoshoot!

Blogger Catherine said ... (11:24 AM) :

This photo is stunning. Can anyone identify the sweater/jacket? It looks so cozy! A piece I could definitely use here in New York.

Blogger Soren Lorensen said ... (11:43 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:43 PM) :

but just say yes to this ensemble! very chic.

Blogger Rachel said ... (5:47 PM) :

That coat look hella awesome. And she's very pretty.

Anonymous elisabetty said ... (12:02 AM) :

truth be told, she looks wonderful. but if 9999 out of 10000 of us tried to pull off the white shoes, we'd look unbelievably dorky. it's just not a look that most of us could emulate.
she is beautiful, no?

Blogger yac said ... (1:51 AM) :

What's with the cigarette comments. This is Europe. Get with the times.
Having lived in the states I understand it's quite against the grain over there and generally frowned upon - just like it is here nowadays, but people won't make a piece of art or someone's look or whatnot about nothing but the cigarette. You guys are being a tad over the top on that whole subject; look at what's essential for the shot. It's not the "fag," it's the whole ensemble, the clothes, the expression. Letting yourself be detracted by that kind of detail doesn't give you a large degree of credibility in judging a work as a whole --- just sayin'

Gorgeous shot. I could do with this jumper for a Melbourne winter....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:41 PM) :

I disagree with Yacoub, it's time to deglamorize cigarettes. I live in Europe and almost all very young people are still smoking, it's some kind of rebellion, the smoke frontier, the return to the glam smoking past of the 1940's or 60's. It's really time to find a new aesthetic for a new time, don't you think? It's just old esthetics, old habits, like tan skin. And it is so gross to kiss somebody who smokes!! and to smell their hair and clothes.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:34 PM) :
