I have already begun telling my daughters that smoking is a personal decision but not one they are allowed to make.

No blog owner can beat the stupidity. Whatever view they may express, they will be contradicted. I'm not American, and I admit to relishing in the occasional waft of distant smoke that brings back memories of countless nights spent in clubs. I also appreciate its arguable aesthetic value. But as a close relative of someone whose diagnose reads lung cancer from long-term exposure to second-hand smoke, I can assure you that the only thing that can be possibly seen as fascist about smoking is endangering someone else with your habit.

As for the picture, love the bag, the shoes and the jackets. The pants will take some time to get used to. Lovely photo as well.

I hardly think the first statement is a fair one, and I think your admission of the special-ness of the photographs attests to the artful and artistic eye of their maker, which would render him, effectively, an artist.

Also, in response to the second statement, how can you make such a sweeping generalization? Many of my friends are artists and some of them smoke, and others do not. Smoking is hardly a determinant when it comes to one's "artist" status. One is an artist because one sees creatively and acts upon that singular vision.

With that said, kudos to the Sartorialist for encouraging his daughters not to get started in what, though aesthetically attractive in the hands of some, is a harmful (and expensive) habit.

Somehow I like the pictures from the waist downward,excluding the baggy pants.The white skirt is ok and the shoes they are wearing are chic.What they are doing-I don´t think is a pretty sight .Somehow the upper section of their bodies doesn´t fit the lower section.I suppose they didn´t look into the mirror before leaving home.

I rarely smoke, but some of those I love best do...luckily I enjoy the smell and ritual. I have no time for those who call it a filthy habit, we all have our filthy habits after all. .. let he who is without sin and all that.

I must admit that, its a bit sad living in a sanitized, nonsmoking Europe...let the venues themselves choose, no? And the people can choose where they want to go...and all the coolest places will be smoking ;-)

But that is besides the point. I absolutely love the shape of the bag in this photo, and the shoes are phenomenal! The short jackets throw an almost 80s feel to their outfits and it's a fun balance!

It's way too harsh to call Sart "facist" (I mean, common!). But still, I do think it's a little unfair to present a portrait and then criticize or "justify" the portrait's subjects. If one is truly anti-smoking, one shouldn't include subjects who are smoking in one's photography.

More, Sart! More! Yeah, the clothes are fascinating. Yeah, the stance of this pair of fascinating people is fascinating. Yeah, some sort of magical opportunity with perfect lighting is following the Sartorialist around the globe like some kind of ever-present Lighting Faerie.

But for me, it's the hair. Un-perfect Hair as not just okay, but part of real style ... I could study the picture for hours. Why does that work? That's not supposed to work. Sart doesn't have fascist american views on smoking. However, he gets many anti-smoking comments every time he posts a picture with a smoker, probably from the same people who moan about the lack of helmets on his bicycle riders.

It appears that he's trying to nip these comments in the bud before they can get started.

FWIW, I'm an artist. I don't smoke.

And regarding the photo...I sincerely hope that the "hammer pants" aren't making a comeback.

When smoking was forbidden at all resturants and pubs in Sweden 2 years ago, it affected the way of how people dressed. Suddenly you could start to use your most presious clothes an evening out without ruin them with the disgusting smell of smoke.

It seems to me he is aware that photographing a subject opens him to accusations of endorsing what others see in it. Remember the discussion about the chic, petite, girlish photographer.

So instead of letting his art stand alone, he frames it. Why not? This is a forum, not a silent gallery.

That he reveals a little of his personal perspective--and what a nicely phrased, elegant perspective it is--makes me enjoy his images even more.

I know this blog isn't a soapbox but realizing smoking is bad and not wanting your children to do it is faaaaarrrr from naive and facist - it's loving and smart. Also using one's artistry as an excuse to smoke - not good, correct, or cool.
Lastly- if Sart's photos and the people in them are not a form of art then the idea of parents not wanting their children to smoke is indeed naive.

Coco, you need to learn how to spell first, darling, before you can try to even make a valid point. Not all artists smoke, and not all Americans think the world is like an extension of Disneyland. It would be like me (an American) saying that all French have poor hygiene. We know that's not true. You can't stereotype. Besides, Scott can say whatever he wants--it's HIS blog.

Also, sorry, lung cancer and emphysema are not sexy, nor is looking haggard at a young age. He is just looking out for his daughters, like anyone else would with their children. And you can't fault him for that!

I hate the smoking, and the pants on both gals. The pants are a bad trend that looks horrible on almost everyone, except for the few minutes they are going down the runway, (and maybe even then) also the trend is over; which makes me think, "They are only cool if they came for a second-hand shop." Then I could see the beauty.
As for the smoking, I don't mind if they do. I just wouldn't want to walk behind them or kiss them--ashtray mouth is NEVER sexy.
Smoking DOES effect the people around the smoker, also makes your teeth dark, and has nothing to do woth being an artist.

Smoking or no smoking debate, don't care. But, there have been photos of people smoking that make them look chic. This is not one of those. I don't think their pose makes them look chic at all. So why all the "makes me want to start smoking comments"? that's a comment about the women, not your skills as a photographer. there isn't anything alluring about their posture or pose that warrants that reaction. wendyb is right, black leggings like this are the new hammer pants. I think you should have special concern as a parent doing anything to depict smoking as cool. If your kids read this now, or will in a few years, I do think its imperative not to allow them to think that you think smoking is cool.

My parents smoke, and I still can't quite get it through my head that it's not good, even though I have finally quit -- after a health scare -- and every day I wish they would too.

Now if you'd just start putting a disclaimer on your photos of bicyclists without helmets! So many bicyclists die in New York City every year, and while some of those people were wearing helmets and were still killed, it is a dangerous city. Obviously you wouldn't want to take a photo of them with their helmet on, but why not place it on the ground near them, so that it is in the frame?

Sorry everyone for being such an American.

Re: the smoking, I think Sart just wanted to avoid the discussion centering itself on the smoking, not the clothes (ironically). As for the American/non-smoker/naive idea, I find this funny, because here in NZ we see Americans as almost as bad as Europe for smokers - it's all a matter of perspective :)

Awesome picture. Love it. Smoking is a funny thing. I used to be a national-level marathon runner and I like it (reminds me of old friends, university), though I haven't smoked in years. The thing is that people like to do naughty but enjoyable things--it's pretty simple (else there wouldn't be such things as deep fried MARS bars in this world...among other things :)).

smoking suits our world of instant gratification. those who smoke soon enough won't be that pretty, or living. i've done it on and off for a few years, and i feel rightfully guilty when i do. my dad never smoked, but my grandparents, who i never got to meet, died from it. my dad witnessed smoking's consequences first hand. have you ever tried breathing through a straw? apparently, that's what emphysema's like. seems to me like the worst kind of self induced torture.

so many people are fed up over the "discussions" and opinions voiced in this forum. but isn't art supposed to stimulate and challenge? mr. sart's work stirrs up many social commentaries. it's not about some abstract fashion ideal that's too far removed from reality to be applicable. it's about fashion, but i'd venture to say that many loyal readers appreciate that there's a little more depth (and taste, and art) to it than your common fashion blog.

so yay for thoughtfully expressed opinions. including mr. sart's.

i think one thing that turns me off from low-crotched pants, aside from reminding me of ill-fitting baggy-butted pants (love to see these from the back!), is that they're such a blatant removal from what a fundamental, functional pair of pants looks like. i'm sure there's enough fabric there for the wearer to walk (or hammer-dance) just fine, but it causes the same visceral reaction that seeing someone with their knees tied together might cause. i don't think i need webbing between my thighs, thank you, although with the addition of a loose drapy kimono top, one might actually be able to follow the lead of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and take flight.

Inspired by two beautiful woman in the street, and they both happen to be holding a *GASP* ciggy.

To those of you that are actually looking past the style (which is WHY The Satorialist, whom is very much an artist, as photography is an art, exists) and can only concentrate only on the darn ciggy: Have you not seen a ciggy before? You don't necessarily have to go to a bar or club (Heck, some of us have our reasons for not going out to the bar or club), but that doesn't exclude the fact that someone didn't once enter your life (close or not) that wasn't a smoker or developed lung cancer. Grow up, please.


And by the way, I commend Sart's little blurb after the picture. Yes, they are smoking in the picture and his children (your children, our children) may see it. But, overall, Sart seems like a good role model for his children.

P.S.: Coco's remarks are very silly, but give her the kid a break - she is probably fifteen :-). Smoking harms not only the smokers themselves, but also those around them. Although I am against prohibition and would allow adults to make their own decision about how they want to die, the same is not true for children. We have the responsibility to protect them from the propaganda that "smoking is cool" (the very propaganda that poor Coco herself has obviously succumbed to). Thus the disclaimer was most appropriate.
