Comments on "At the Tuileries...Short Black Jackets, Paris"
A fantastic photograph which captures the Parisian youth quite well.
Very nice.
Well done... a fantastic photograph which captures the style of the Parisian youth quite well.
I'm impressed.
dear sartorialist, though your fotografs are special, please spare us your faschist , naive american views on i.e. smoking. It seems to all americans abroad, the world is an extension of disneyworld and theirs for the taking. you are not an artist. artists smoke.
Hammer pants!
she wears those pants so well.
like this pic very very much!!!
it really works in paris ~~~
by annA
smoking or not smoking, beautiful photo as well as great style. the pants on the right are amazing.
Is that a FCUK bag? I was going to get it. It looks good on her.
Luck you - you've been having even better than usual lighting! (is that possible?)
N
your caption makes this photo more dynamic and adds a layer of photographer/subject interest that i am MORE interested in than the image itself, i think. this is not to say that the image itself isn't also fantastic, however.
What is with the awful politically correct backlash against smoking? Yeah, okay I get it- it's bad for you.
That doesn't mean you can't look hot holding one.
Case in point- this stunning photo.
Ha I love that Sart had to add that little smoking disclaimer..
Lest we forget people, smoking is BAD.
Yet, that doesn't change the fact that this photo makes me want to rush out and buy a pack. Oh the power and influence of beauty! Invincible!
Smoke on young pretties.
Awful pants, don't you think it's impossible to wear them and look great?
J'adore les femmes qui fument. C'est sexy. J'aimerais bien les embrasser et les amener à l'hôtel le plus proche.
No blog owner can beat the stupidity. Whatever view they may express, they will be contradicted. I'm not American, and I admit to relishing in the occasional waft of distant smoke that brings back memories of countless nights spent in clubs. I also appreciate its arguable aesthetic value. But as a close relative of someone whose diagnose reads lung cancer from long-term exposure to second-hand smoke, I can assure you that the only thing that can be possibly seen as fascist about smoking is endangering someone else with your habit.
As for the picture, love the bag, the shoes and the jackets. The pants will take some time to get used to. Lovely photo as well.
Very funny preface!
xox Girl and the City
love that chic to the right.. cool pants an Louboutin shoes.. what a beauty!
great photo but you have contradicted yourself with the smoking comment. Unless it was on purpose that is... but I have to say, the photo's are for fashion, not anti smoking propaganda and you state that it's a personal decision. Funny how you make the liberal comment into a typical American anti smoking statement. Boring. Just concentrate on the fashion.
Dear Sart, I'm starting to wonder if you're getting some sort of sponsorship from cigarette companies. 2 smoking photos and as many days.
Love their shoes and the discussionof life quite literally meeting art.
xxx
I think that wars for oil and selling bags for thousands of dollars over their production costs is less political correct then smoking.
You Americans have to understand one thing, you are descended from the english and independent thanks to the french.
Nevertheless I like your pics.
Haha loved the comment - nothing like style and wit for a combination.
Dear Coco:
In response to
"you are not an artist. artists smoke."
I hardly think the first statement is a fair one, and I think your admission of the special-ness of the photographs attests to the artful and artistic eye of their maker, which would render him, effectively, an artist.
Also, in response to the second statement, how can you make such a sweeping generalization? Many of my friends are artists and some of them smoke, and others do not. Smoking is hardly a determinant when it comes to one's "artist" status. One is an artist because one sees creatively and acts upon that singular vision.
With that said, kudos to the Sartorialist for encouraging his daughters not to get started in what, though aesthetically attractive in the hands of some, is a harmful (and expensive) habit.
:annabel
It's neither naive nor american to recognize that smoking is bad.
This statement by Anonymous above that "...this photo makes me want to rush out and buy a pack." proves the glamourization of smoking of Sart's beautiful photographs.
Sart, a disclaimer for your daughters is not enough.
hideously unflattering trousers. And dear coco, I don't think that pointing to the ills of smoking is particularly 'fascist' or naive. In fact, it makes total sense. It is, ultimately, a matter of personal choice but in making that choice facts are essential.
That girl had a good idea for her Halloween costume, going as MC Hammer.
File those trousers under "Styles that should not be revived"
Somehow I like the pictures from the waist downward, excluding the baggy pants. The white skirt is ok and the shoes they are wearing are chic. What they are doing-I don´t think is a pretty sight .Somehow the upper section of their bodies doesn´t fit the lower section.I suppose they didn´t look into the mirror before leaving home.
aw...hammer pants...really?
I dig the shoes.
Sillies! Sart only made the comment because if he didn't, the nonsmokers would go ballistic.
I rarely smoke, but some of those I love best do...luckily I enjoy the smell and ritual. I have no time for those who call it a filthy habit, we all have our filthy habits after all. .. let he who is without sin and all that.
I must admit that, its a bit sad living in a sanitized, nonsmoking Europe...let the venues themselves choose, no? And the people can choose where they want to go...and all the coolest places will be smoking ;-)
that's so funny!
i tell my dogs that leggings and an ankle strap are a decision and one that they are not allowed to make.
It's Hammer Time! The 80's are back people! *sigh*
Coco 3:35 - get over it. Smoking kills. I'm an artist and I don't smoke. At least Americans are doing one thing right by keeping all the smoking and its effects on the other side of the world.
Hi there! I'm visiting your blog for the first time and I LOVE what you say to your daughters! I have two of my own who are very fashion conscious but I want them to know that smoking isn't fashionable. Fantastic Photos!
I just want those shoes. Both pairs. They will outlast everything else.
oh come on, enough with the "to smoke or not to smoke" discourse!
the man was just trying to be cute by giving us a little insight into his family disciplinary politics. no need for big words, ok?
fascism is something VERY different, dears!
and let's not forget, we're supposed to comment sartorial practices of inidividuals here, not their other self-destructive or not so self-destructive practices...hence, the women on the right, with the infamous ciggy: PURELY AMAZING!
that is actually something I'd wear! and I take too much pride in my personal style to say that often...
"Artists smoke."
Coco, that's quite an asinine thing to say. Sounds like you're more concerned with being an artist for the image's sake, rather than to actually make art, which has nothing intrinsically to do with smoking.
Also, you spelled fascist wrong.
I don't think it's "facist" for the Sartorialist to prefer his daughters do not smoke. (just as some can smoke, others can raise their children with the values they choose)
But that is besides the point. I absolutely love the shape of the bag in this photo, and the shoes are phenomenal! The short jackets throw an almost 80s feel to their outfits and it's a fun balance!
This comment has been removed by the author.
I have to echo the sentiments already expressed by some of the anons; it really is a little sad that we have to add disclaimers everywhere for fear of some PC-nut starts screaming about our precious children.
how could anyone think it is a bad thing to tell their own daughters not to smoke?
the post didnt condemn smokers as a subset, thats what was witty about the post, he merely and appropriatly made it personal.
but what we should be discussing as normal are the clothes. oh-so suprisingly she wears those pants beautifully with those gorgeous heels, which are entirely necessary to pull them off.
I think the joke was funny and not at all fascist. Americans are so naive we might just stumble into a life without emphysema.
Those are a hell of a pair of pants. They're sort of reverse of the "gaucho" pants that I always see ladies wearing.
It's way too harsh to call Sart "facist" (I mean, common!). But still, I do think it's a little unfair to present a portrait and then criticize or "justify" the portrait's subjects. If one is truly anti-smoking, one shouldn't include subjects who are smoking in one's photography.
Love those pants!!!!!!!!!
what does smoking have to do with being an artist?
I bet if Sart hadn't posted the smoking disclaimer, we'd be looking at a bunch of posts reprimanding him for being irresponsible.
I have to laugh, though, at coco's comments....
"naive american views on i.e. smoking"
yes, as I always like to say, "Oh, you're concerned with your daughters'health? How naive!"
"you are not an artist. artists smoke."
........and they only wear black clothes, black rimmed glasses, listen to skulky music and don't wash their hair. Nothing like some good old fashion stereotyping to start my morning off right!
i don't mind smoking at all, anyone's own decision methinks.
the ladies are beautiful but i really dislike the very eighties-esque baggy pants/leggings/whatever the young lady on the right is wearing. i really dislike anything reminding of the eighties (the age when mankind has been at it's lowest sartorially i think) for that matter.
anything eighties-revivalist makes me cringe.
where can i but those hammer pants?!?! i want them now!
coco made me laugh out loud!
I have been hearing about the "hammer pants" from friends who have been in Paris recently. Love seeing them in action. Thanks for another lovely image, you facist! haha
I am an artist and I do not smoke....so much for broad stereotypes. I love the caption and think the girls would be sexier without the cigarette. thanks!
I hate the smoking, but love the style of the ladies.
More, Sart! More! Yeah, the clothes are fascinating. Yeah, the stance of this pair of fascinating people is fascinating. Yeah, some sort of magical opportunity with perfect lighting is following the Sartorialist around the globe like some kind of ever-present Lighting Faerie.
But for me, it's the hair. Un-perfect Hair as not just okay, but part of real style ... I could study the picture for hours. Why does that work? That's not supposed to work. Hair not full of "product" and immobilized against every possible eventuality? How is it possible with style? (I'm beginning to suspect it's the key ingredient in "REAL style.")
Coco,
Where do you come up with this naive, fascist spin? I think your point seems far more ridiculous than his caption.
Sart,
Nice shot and funny caption!
dear coco,
Sart doesn't have fascist american views on smoking. However, he gets many anti-smoking comments every time he posts a picture with a smoker, probably from the same people who moan about the lack of helmets on his bicycle riders.
It appears that he's trying to nip these comments in the bud before they can get started.
FWIW, I'm an artist. I don't smoke.
And regarding the photo...I sincerely hope that the "hammer pants" aren't making a comeback.
Love the jackets and Louboutins, but I can't get used to those Hammer pants!
When smoking was forbidden at all resturants and pubs in Sweden 2 years ago, it affected the way of how people dressed. Suddenly you could start to use your most presious clothes an evening out without ruin them with the disgusting smell of smoke.
Very good law in many ways! :-)
Apparently in the rush to get to their first cigarette of the morning, they neglected to style their hair before leaving the house.
Love the zouave pants! I have been trying to find a pattern or something since no one has them around here - they're as elusive as those mythical gap jodhpurs.
Dearest coco, I believe Sart was merely trying to avoid the barrage of anti-smoking comments he invariably gets when he shows a picture of people smoking. This is HIS blog, and as such he is free to post comments on anything he chooses. You are free not to read them. His photographs are special, but he's a fascist, and not an artist because he doesn't smoke?! I'm afraid it is you who are naive.
That said, I dislike the pants, but somehow they work!
What a great line:
"it's a personal decision that you're not allowed to make"
...sounds like it could have been written be Oscar Wilde, but also how I imagine how many fathers must feel about decisions facing their daughters.
Great pants too.
people flip their shite over bicycle pictures w/o helmets, but a smoking disclaimer can't be added without backlash?
spare me.
and coco, chill with the flippant and foolish generalization of artists. it's rather unseemly.
Sart's caption made me smile.
It seems to me he is aware that photographing a subject opens him to accusations of endorsing what others see in it. Remember the discussion about the chic, petite, girlish photographer.
So instead of letting his art stand alone, he frames it. Why not? This is a forum, not a silent gallery.
That he reveals a little of his personal perspective--and what a nicely phrased, elegant perspective it is--makes me enjoy his images even more.
Love the heels, the pants, the bag, the attitude - It bodifes what rebellious Parisian youth culture looks like to me-
I know this blog isn't a soapbox but realizing smoking is bad and not wanting your children to do it is faaaaarrrr from naive and facist - it's loving and smart. Also using one's artistry as an excuse to smoke - not good, correct, or cool.
Lastly- if Sart's photos and the people in them are not a form of art then the idea of parents not wanting their children to smoke is indeed naive.
that tha paris-girl in a nut shell! C'mon lets light a fag.....
Nice pants suits her perfect...i think its hard to wear this style so elegant!
Yes, that's what I think of when I think of The Sartorialist: Fascism!
(joke! to be appreciated by longtime visitors to the blog.) (I guess there's no way to win with those who can't resist a political point no matter that it doesn't suit the context. See: bicycles and smoking.)
These girls are so cute!
-- desertwind
I'm not sure people even read the caption properly - probably the funniest and best caption you've ever written for a photo, and one of the few that I thought added to the picture.
This image does not celebrate smoking--it celebrates hot babes in pointy pointy high heels :)
How do you find such wonderful people to photograph, Scott? I love the look here: leather jackets, leggings, and especially the high heels. Love the heels! Incredible. Smoking cigarettes is neither a crime nor a sin, despite the views of American Puritans. Another amazing photo!
Thanks for making your point on that little note about smoking! Im an artist and I don't smoke! and I don't need to!
Really cool photo i love those short jackets!!!
continue your fabulous job!
Coco, you need to learn how to spell first, darling, before you can try to even make a valid point. Not all artists smoke, and not all Americans think the world is like an extension of Disneyland. It would be like me (an American) saying that all French have poor hygiene. We know that's not true. You can't stereotype. Besides, Scott can say whatever he wants--it's HIS blog.
Also, sorry, lung cancer and emphysema are not sexy, nor is looking haggard at a young age. He is just looking out for his daughters, like anyone else would with their children. And you can't fault him for that!
I thought the smoking disclaimer quite appropriate.
They do look wonderful, of course.
I like the shoes at right very much.
I like both of the jackets, the bag, and the shoes.
Hate the droopy drawers.
Like the white/black dress with leggings.
Have no desire to take up smoking after viewing this photo.
ack. I've been seeing these pants all over town during the summer and secretly wishing that they would be gone (and need I say, burnt) by autumn. Alas, here they are, in Les Tuileries, no less.
May I redeem myself by saying that I really like her shoes?
what is the name for this type of pant? i really like them.
oh and sart, i just moved to europe and i am getting a walloping from everyone for my anti-smoking stance (even as their governments are starting to adopt the bans).
The heels are absolutely YUUUMMY! on these two.
Although "Glam when smoking" isn't of course the intended message, I think I could see that in this picture.
Cheryl Marie Cordeiro
those pants are amazing!
Hmm ... If you tell your kids not to do something then they're more likely to do it ...
Smoking & drinking is part of European life & isn't harming anyone other than the people who partake ...
I find Americans funny - they're so against smoking but so many have guns - something not right there!
Anyways, this pic is hot hot hot.
Coco, what I find naive is how anyone could think that smoking makes someone an artist.
vraiment sexy. vraiment paris.
I hate the smoking, and the pants on both gals. The pants are a bad trend that looks horrible on almost everyone, except for the few minutes they are going down the runway, (and maybe even then) also the trend is over; which makes me think, "They are only cool if they came for a second-hand shop." Then I could see the beauty.
As for the smoking, I don't mind if they do. I just wouldn't want to walk behind them or kiss them--ashtray mouth is NEVER sexy.
Smoking DOES effect the people around the smoker, also makes your teeth dark, and has nothing to do woth being an artist.
Coco:
Your idea of America is even -more- "fascist" and "naive". And, "you are not an artist. artists smoke." - you're absolutely hilarious...
If a person of no blood relation to us wants to make sure s/he dies of lung cancer, we really have no right to stop him/her. In fact, anyone who is so eager to go through the pain of cancer really should be encouraged; so that when enough people realize what -hell- this disease puts them through, maybe they will stop enslaving themselves to Philip Morris.
Great snap! Love it all, the stance, the interaction, the clothes, shoes! Lovely!
Dear coco, naive? All artists smoke? ALL...? Again... ALL? Are you seriuos...? Unfortunataley I cannot ignore this comment as some have. Its comments like these that take away from the pictures and what the blog is creating. Sorry Mr. Slimane, you are not an artist.
Hey irene m, I totally agree with you. Long live hot chicks in pointy heels (well, as long as they can possibly live, since they are smokers, chuckle snort bad joke)!
I agree with coco. Sart your view about smoking it´s so naif. Bad? or good? it depends on each person and his circumstances...
Nice shoot!
Coco, Sart is an artist. Photography is an art. Belittling him simply because you don't agree with his opinion makes YOU sound awfully fascist, though.
And the "artists smoke" dictum is almost too illogical to address, but as a filmmaker, and so, an artist, I'll disabuse you of that notion. Another nonsmoker here.
--SD
Speaking strictly within the bounds of the photo, the smoking is unattractive to me. Their expressions are unflattering and mannish in this captured moment. I would be embarrassed to be seen with this pursed look on my face. Hammer pants notwithstanding.
Smoking or no smoking debate, don't care. But, there have been photos of people smoking that make them look chic. This is not one of those. I don't think their pose makes them look chic at all. So why all the "makes me want to start smoking comments"? that's a comment about the women, not your skills as a photographer. there isn't anything alluring about their posture or pose that warrants that reaction. wendyb is right, black leggings like this are the new hammer pants. Hate them always.
I'm thinking the only appropriate response to the hammer pants is "gag me with a spoon."
I think you should have special concern as a parent doing anything to depict smoking as cool. If your kids read this now, or will in a few years, I do think its imperative not to allow them to think that you think smoking is cool.
My parents smoke, and I still can't quite get it through my head that it's not good, even though I have finally quit -- after a health scare -- and every day I wish they would too.
Now if you'd just start putting a disclaimer on your photos of bicyclists without helmets! So many bicyclists die in New York City every year, and while some of those people were wearing helmets and were still killed, it is a dangerous city. Obviously you wouldn't want to take a photo of them with their helmet on, but why not place it on the ground near them, so that it is in the frame?
Sorry everyone for being such an American.
can you say "do the worm".
GRIN!
Anon 7:05-
You need to understand two things: Americans are descended from people all over the world. And the French would be saying "Spechen Sie Deutsch" to each other if not for us.
Get over yourself. America has!
shoes at right are Louboutin.
But what brand or the shoes at the left? They are looooooovely!!!
Thank you for the help
I think those women are getting away with the Hammer pants, though I'm just not that into the look myself. As for the smoking, well, I've noticed most of your Paris pics are of women with cig in hand. Artists all, I'm sure, right Coco?
Great pic, by the way!
great photo!
if i were you i'd leave out the disclaimers. if people can't see your photos for what they are they don't deserve to comment anyway. :)
It really takes the right shape to pull off those pants.
She did it!
Wow, there are some really ugly comments on here. Fredrick's comment is especially disgusting.
I applaud your dislike of smoking, Scott. Let's face it, people, smoking ruins your health and your looks. Thinking that it "looks chic" is old and pathetic. Plus you will need botox for those crows feet that smoking gives you.
Good for you, Scott. This is your blog, and some people are forgetting this.
Those Hammer pants, are those the Balenciaga ones?
I'm not sure why, but she does well with them.
Good picture. Good dialectics about smoking
I love her MJs! Fantastic picture.

Methinks the comment about "faschist" [sic] views reflects the confusion many non-Americans have towards America. Let's get it straight: It's George Bush who's the fascist, not The Sartorialist.
And yes, nicotine is an addictive drug, and smoking kills millions worldwide. Is that really so cool?
Love the combination of leggings and heels. Hot!
Great Photo. It captures the street scenes I saw on my visit.
Have you already begun telling your daughters that wearing heels is a personal decision. Those babies have got to bite after a long day. How do all of these ladies walk around in such uncomfortable devices? When I try I'm confined to walking at an embarrassingly slow pace. It’s like foot binding. I enjoy my flat boots.
love the girl's pants!
and coco, the sartorist's opinion on smoking is not naive at all. i think your pretentious comment is the most naive thing i've read recently. fyi, not all artists smoke.
another amazing photograph.
my goal in life is to be you.
Hey you fashionistas If u want to keep on enjoying life an living longer and gorgeous and young stop smoking!!!! more sexy when u dont smoke totally!!!
love the shoes...!
I pray these pants don't become what "skinnies" were a couple seasons ago, but this lady almost makes me wish they would.
And while I don't support smoking, I've always found it ridiculously glamorous, as these ladies prove.
I have to laugh at anyone who calls The Sartorialist a fascist. Fashion industry workers are one of the most progressive segments of American society. If you want to find real American fascists, you will find many of them working in, or getting campaign contributions from the tobacco industry.
By the way, Sart, you always find a lovely photo at the Tuileries!
Wow. Look how cool they look! Man, I wish I was cool enough to smoke! I wish more people were cool enough to let people make their own choices regarding their health. The laws and advertisements against smoking are nothing more than the government trying to take away the pleasures of the common man.
Poor Sart --you meant to pre-empt the anti-smoking diatribes, and then got hit from the other side!
The photo is great: all that black and white, and then a few touches of red and red/orange --including the woman's heels.
the coco comment is a joke...right?
I am ignoring the hammer-pants and leggings as I'm a bit tired of watching bad trends re-emerge as "high fashion."
I'd rather spend all my energy on those delicious red-heeled pumps. Yumm!
Too bad they're smoking...
They would've been more cooler.
I love the jackets, shoes, bags, but the pants should DIE. What was she thinking??
Re: the smoking, I think Sart just wanted to avoid the discussion centering itself on the smoking, not the clothes (ironically). As for the American/non-smoker/naive idea, I find this funny, because here in NZ we see Americans as almost as bad as Europe for smokers - it's all a matter of perspective :)
Does it really matter? concentrate on the clothes!
smoking looks great. lends one to look thoughtful and introspective. gives hands something elegant to do and gives lips something to smooch up to. but it makes people smell gross. it's hard to smell how gross it is until you stop smoking. i happen to know.
thought you might enjoy reading a description of yourself...

If the Harem pant is going to make a comeback, can't we, for-the-love-of-god, at least do something a little bit more original with them this time? Seriously? Not that different looking from what I saw at Limited Express in the mid 80's.
Now I know why my mom used to cringe when I would buy 50's frocks from thrift stores.
...but it is meant to celebrate shoes i guess! lovely!
oh.. and i love how parisian ladies smoke&walk. they look like cats under fog.
Ahem, commenters: please refrain from sharing your political/sociocultural thoughts on this blog. None of you sound nearly as intelligent as I am sure you hope you do.
This is Sart's blog, he can do and say what he likes.
As to the girls in the photo, I too love the shoes and am pretty iffy on everything else. The pants, the heavy dosages of black -- it all has a whiff of "trying too hard" to me. Eek.
Awesome picture. Love it. Smoking is a funny thing. I used to be a national-level marathon runner and I like it (reminds me of old friends, university), though I haven't smoked in years. The thing is that people like to do naughty but enjoyable things--it's pretty simple (else there wouldn't be such things as deep fried MARS bars in this world...among other things :)).
All the holier than thou comments about smoking or not have got to go. Everyone needs to lighten up and lay off both the Satorialist and the smokers. If you don't like it, take your own fashion photos.
If the sartorialist posts a photo of someone smoking, he gets a trillion " Oh my god, how could you advocate smoking blah blah blah"
So he post a disclaimer and still, the comments are either bitching about the smoking or bitching about we unsophisticated Americans who don't understand that smoking is something natural that many Europeans do, and we just don't understand, they find it funny and so on. Bottom line: this is a style blog, not a let's argue about smoking blog because it's just not a valid contribution.
Oh, and those Louboutins are killer.
-LB
haha too funny!
well just about everyone and his dog smoke in Europe so it probably would be hard to not take a shot without someone hanging onto a ciggy...its a great shot though...love their outfits and how they sort of match....
I'm afraid those leggings (footless tights) are a fashion disaster. Friends pointed out the photo to me in horror, stating that it reminded them of the awful leggings from the 80s that we're all still trying to forget. No one can look good in them. Not even these girls.
And yes, I'm terribly opinionated! :)
Wow, wasn't it supposed to be about the short black jackets.... personally I am anti-80's fashion revival, but she is rocking the Hammer pants, the beautiful drape is strangely compelling! The shoes of course are gorgeous, as is the photo Sart.
Awfully nice pic for a Fascist American peeg like Sart.
En ce qui concerne Anon 4:52:
J'adore les femmes qui fument, oui. C'est sexy, oui. J'amerais bien les embrasser. Uh, non.
"And the French would be saying "Spechen Sie Deutsch" to each other if not for us"
I love it when moronic Americans say this ... how many times have I heard this in my 20 years on this planet? ... I believe the British were the ones that held the Nazis back for many years & I believe it was the Americans who came in at the very END of the war ... so taking full credit for winning the war is completely false.
Also, all the spelling police ... please remember that some of us reading & replying do not speak english as a 1st language so to criticise spelling is rather childish ... English is my 3rd language & I like to think my comments are as articulate as any english speakers.
And the person who mentioned Europe & smoking & keeping it at this side ... I think you'll find that it's extremely hard to smoke in public anywhere in Northern Europe [U.K, Ireland, Sweden etc..] ... Southern Europe isn't as progressive - Yet.
Wow. That's me in the 80's (sans a rather spiky coiffure). All in black with the ridiculous Hammer pants and pumps (except my shoes were no where near as nice), the short leather jacket, the smokes. Sometimes I miss the cigarettes, but I'll never miss those pants!
Well, one thing's for sure- this picture is Paris in a nutshell, down to the baguette in the hand of the women on the left!
Poor coco has been picked on enough, but I have to mention that I only thought liberal Americans were constantly misusing the word "fascist"!
Dear Sart,
1. great picture (as usual
2. loved what you say to your kids, plan on using that one day when i have my own, if you don't mind
3. I really hope that you are able to filter out the nasty comments and not let them get to you.
Dear Coco,
You suck.
are your daughters as fashionable as you?
smoking or not, they are still fabulous.
Sart, I am looking at these women, and all the people behind, and practically all of the other women you have been photographing this Fall, and find it depressing that black is back, say, and in a way that seems to exclude any other colour. Sigh. I am constantly trying to edit the black out of my wardrobe.
so is it fascist to make your kids buckle their seat betls? or is that just good parenting? i'm a nanny, and the kids under my care would much rather roll around in the back (or front) seat than sit in their car seats. how oppressive of me.
smoking suits our world of instant gratification. those who smoke soon enough won't be that pretty, or living. i've done it on and off for a few years, and i feel rightfully guilty when i do. my dad never smoked, but my grandparents, who i never got to meet, died from it. my dad witnessed smoking's consequences first hand. have you ever tried breathing through a straw? apparently, that's what emphysema's like. seems to me like the worst kind of self induced torture.
so many people are fed up over the "discussions" and opinions voiced in this forum. but isn't art supposed to stimulate and challenge? mr. sart's work stirrs up many social commentaries. it's not about some abstract fashion ideal that's too far removed from reality to be applicable. it's about fashion, but i'd venture to say that many loyal readers appreciate that there's a little more depth (and taste, and art) to it than your common fashion blog.
so yay for thoughtfully expressed opinions. including mr. sart's.
i think one thing that turns me off from low-crotched pants, aside from reminding me of ill-fitting baggy-butted pants (love to see these from the back!), is that they're such a blatant removal from what a fundamental, functional pair of pants looks like. i'm sure there's enough fabric there for the wearer to walk (or hammer-dance) just fine, but it causes the same visceral reaction that seeing someone with their knees tied together might cause. i don't think i need webbing between my thighs, thank you, although with the addition of a loose drapy kimono top, one might actually be able to follow the lead of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and take flight.
I personally think the Hammer pants are a good idea. Difficult to wear, but if I found a pair that made me look good, I would. I also like calling them Harem pants, not Hammer pants. ;D
Any woman who can pull off those pants and heels is okay in my book.
Drop-waisted pants are the most horrible creation I've seen on (and off!) the runway in recent years. Send them back to the fashion crypt where they belong! Another reader mentioned gaucho pants, and I must confess that I can't stand those either. Once again, such things should be relegated to the crypt, never to be revived.
The shoes, on the other hand, I covet.
naive because why, we think smoking is harmful and is not a good idea for children to think is cool?? Gimme a break coco!
Oh my GOSH! LOVE those shoes, so chic...even with the "Hammer" pants. ^..^
post scriptum: Your comment about smoking and your daughters made me laugh. I have said the exact thing to my little 7 year old.
damn, i hate how cool smoking makes you look... if only candy cigarettes really lit and smoked the same way real ones do. The actual act of smoking disgusts me though, so thanks for that little disclaimer. I love the photo, especially the classic black patent pumps, and the women on the right's pants.
Love the action in the photo.. Everybody in it are moving in some way, did you ask them to pose like that or was it by coincedence? I vote for the pants and the heels are amazing..

There is no need for name calling in this great discussion about fashion and fags. Le smoking works for some and others not. How one can be considered naive for caring about preventing lung cancer is puzzling, to me, a non-smoking artist who also happens to be a U.S. citizen and a citizen of the world. Loe the little jackets, the bag, the shoes, and yes, the look would not be as special were it not for the loose pants! Bravo and respect to an American artist - MC Hammer.
Smoking is sexy? Yeah, like foot binding is sexy. Maybe this makes me hopelessly "American," but to me what is sexy is health, vitality, energy. Like my husband when he comes into our house, flushed and panting from a run. His long, strong, tanned legs topped by those sexy little running shorts . . .
my goodness, some people are so uptight. leave the sartorialist to say whatever he wants about his daughters. sheesh.
oh man, those pants are a personal decision no one should be allowed to make:) ugh!
GO Scott Go!! The artist saying that artist must smoke, is exposed of his/her stupidity in their own statement.
I smoke sometimes for fun and the flavour, but I don't recommend embracing the habit.
Also, I think people should wear ugly things, on purpose. If you can rock it, then it is your DUTY to do so!
Ok.
Hammer pants= HOT!
Political Correctness= NOT!
It seems to me that Sart added the daughter disclaimer so the anti-smoking, pro-helmut brigade wouldn't get too carried away!
I am an artist. I don't smoke.
But it's no skin off my back if anyone else does. These young ladies look great, and it's a discredit to their intelligence to assume that they don't know any better! Obviously they smoke because they want to.
And they look damn good doing it too. Maybe that's what's so infuriating to some.
12:17 said: "I find Americans funny - they're so against smoking but so many have guns - something not right there!"
But see, when I pull out my gun it does not automaticaly send a spray of bullits about hitting anyone who has unluckily chosen to sit near me.
As to the photo, I have never liked the legging/high-heels style so this whole look does nothing for me.
Those pants!
I bought some similar drop crotched pants today. I can not wait to make various outfits with them.
I just wish it would get colder in texas!

i feel like sart is just trying to be a good father by saying he isn't going to allow them to make the decision to smoke. obviously any decision one makes in life is up to them, albeit smoking, sex before marriage, doing drugs, et cetera. while a parent has no control over what their child decides, i doubt any parent would be like "hey, it's cool with me if you become a junkie."
the comment to me, just seemed to be an expression of his paternal side, but i don't know. could be wrong. i don't think it had anything to do with politics, 'national identity', or any of the other things people were nitpicking at.
love the photo
no coco...smoking is for suckers regardless of whether theyre artists or not.
spare us your pretentious dribble
i love your photographs! the mood is to die for. glad i stumbled here.
i just love your blog, your photos, the style...
COCO: stop throwing around words that carry negative connotations for clearly inappropriately-described situations. judging something as "fascist" makes you a fascist. that's fresh irony for you, no? benefits of smoking: none - scientifically speaking. hazards of smoking: don't even get me started... i've heard of talented artists who have lit themselves on fire; does that make them more artistic? shall all aspiring artists now go out and light themselves on fire to become recognized in the art world? or van gogh, must one chop their own body parts off in order to become considered an artist just because he (a great artist) has? no. lastly, all americans are not ignorant, culturally-insensitive egotists either; thank you for your ignorant stereotype! so i suggest you stop generalizing also. you embarrass yourself by making such ridiculous comments! it seems you complain just to have something supposedly unconventional to say. when "coco" contributes something of actual value to the people of the internet, then she/he can criticize sart if she/he wishes. until then, i'll ask that you please keep your useless negativity to yourself.
great photos btw, sart. minus the hammer pants... i, myself, prefer the lady to the left. her dress is one i would buy at a department store without hesitation.
liked the comment more than the picture!
Everybody has those kind of jackets. So I`m not impressed...
I'm not a big fan of the pants - but I love the shoes.
My reaction to the cigarettes is the same as when you post pictures of people wearing fur. It disgusts me and makes the subjects look ugly. Like suddenly they were revealed in Ivan Albright portrait-of-dorian-grey stye.
Inspired by two beautiful woman in the street, and they both happen to be holding a *GASP* ciggy.
To those of you that are actually looking past the style (which is WHY The Satorialist, whom is very much an artist, as photography is an art, exists) and can only concentrate only on the darn ciggy: Have you not seen a ciggy before? You don't necessarily have to go to a bar or club (Heck, some of us have our reasons for not going out to the bar or club), but that doesn't exclude the fact that someone didn't once enter your life (close or not) that wasn't a smoker or developed lung cancer. Grow up, please.
And by the way, I commend Sart's little blurb after the picture. Yes, they are smoking in the picture and his children (your children, our children) may see it. But, overall, Sart seems like a good role model for his children.
:-)
This spits Rock and Roll all over the place.
Well, how else are those fashionistas going to stay so skinny and look so beautiful in those dresses. :-)
But seriously, smoking is a really bad and dangerous, but so are obesity, alcoholism, sexual hedonism, and George W. Bush.
Good choice, Sart. Our dad smoked his whole life but with sheer numbing reminders from my mom on the evils of cigarettes, my brother and I never picked up the habit.
So keep reminding your daughters that smoking is bad. But balance that out by telling them something that is good like low fat yogurt. :-)
Otherwise, you're an old nag like my mom.
Oh please be quiet. You are all jealous cos these two girls are way hotter than all of you.
Coco- you're an idiot. Shut up about the stupid smoking comment--he's a man with an opinion, and apparently one opinon about smoking, and apparently all of you care enough about his opinion to visit his blog and see what he says--so shut it about the damn smoking and take note about the clothes. If you had kids, you wouldn't want them to smoke either, so shut it.
Just wanted to say that I like what you told your daughters. Quite rational.
And great jackets!
Don't worry about it, Sartorialist: smoking exists and the world is not America.
Yours,
Drwild
Love the shoes and the bag. Hate the baggy pants on the right, but the leggings are O.K.
Somehow the upper parts of their bodies do not work: the leather jackets look harsh, not stylish, and the hair is a disaster...
P.S.: Coco's remarks are very silly, but give her the kid a break - she is probably fifteen :-). Smoking harms not only the smokers themselves, but also those around them. Although I am against prohibition and would allow adults to make their own decision about how they want to die, the same is not true for children. We have the responsibility to protect them from the propaganda that "smoking is cool" (the very propaganda that poor Coco herself has obviously succumbed to). Thus the disclaimer was most appropriate.
I laughed when I read your "disclaimer".
That was all to it -- humour, just pure dry humour.
I did not even bother to try to dissect it or think that it was a shot at trying to be PC.
I hope the comments will not get to you.
Cheers.
-Jolene
i loooooooooooooove your pics
i'm from brazil and i'm desperate to get more information from you.
more of your work
coco disse...
dear sartorialist, though your fotografs are special, please spare us your faschist , naive american views on i.e. smoking. It seems to all americans abroad, the world is an extension of disneyworld and theirs for the taking. you are not an artist. artists smoke.
3:35 AM
I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH HIM!
GOD! IS HE CRAZY? C'MOM!
YOU ONE OF THE BEST ARTISTS OF HISTORY.
I SWEAR.
i don't like reading people babble. i'm in love with the pants... where can i get one of these.....
