On the Street....Cargo Shorts & Sportcoats, Florence

It's a tricky proposition but this photo is proof that cargo shorts and sportcoats can be successfully combined.

only for the select few and for those who master the art of odd combinations, but looks great here!

I love the italian style !!

Don't like it, I can tell the shorts are much slimmer than most cargo pants, however it just doesn't do it for me.

I think he pulls it off. The trick is the really tight fitting jacket that doesn't hang too much at the waist and clings more like a shirt.

Still would take a very confident man to pull off.

I don't think so. Makes an otherwise attractive man look like a doofus!

It's times like these doctors cuffs are actually useful... He should unbutton his cuffs and roll them up rather than just tugging his sleeves.

The sports coat is very casual so, it does indeed look good with the shorts..

He has great legs....

Maybe with highheels.

Never again do we have to choose between going on safari or attending a polo match.
In all seriousness though; cargo shorts will forever remain the bastard son of an Elizabethan man's skirt (the unexplainable slashed pillow thing above his tights). I would rather forget they existed.
Great touch of detail in the sleeves though. The rolled cuff strikes a fine balance between neat and scruffy.

Blogger Jordan Morton said ... (5:31 PM) :

Maybe if they were slimmer and shorter. Baggy cargos are the exclusive province of frat boys.

I'm loving the overall consensus on this look. Cargo shorts can't really be successful with anything. Dark jeans would make this outfit work superbly though.

Anonymous The Styley said ... (5:56 PM) :

Okay, I'm now convinced that cargo shorts can be chic, but then again, I was wearing black silk MC Hammer-style pants last Saturday night, so I understand if my perspective is seen as somewhat suspect...

Blogger Maca said ... (6:06 PM) :

I'm not sure if they are successfully combined, but he looks quite well anyway.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:10 PM) :

No, this is proof that they cannot be successfully combined unless of course, you are either 8years old or Angus Young.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:15 PM) :

Hmm, would this work with tattooed legs??

Blogger amelia said ... (6:16 PM) :

interesting combination..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:42 PM) :

I like the bagginess of the shorts. he takes that look ('frat boy') and makes it his own in the inimitable Italian way. I think it looks cool. As others have remarked, it is largely about the tighter, shorter cut of the jacket. And, as someone else also said, it's summer! so why not.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:43 PM) :

Not sure about this one....

Blogger Phyllis said ... (7:03 PM) :

Maybe he went clamming before work? :)

Anonymous Angelia said ... (7:03 PM) :

Interesting, it does work in the photo, but not sure if everyone could pull it off.

Anonymous Diana said ... (7:05 PM) :

Maybe if we saw his front side we would be better convinced. From the back, not so much. his legs look 2 inches short!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:31 PM) :

Not sure how well the combination works....maybe he is transitioning into the weekend? But the cargo shorts are sexy. Make me think a he could tack a sailboat, drive a Jeep, wouldn't faint if he saw a big spider.

And look at those legs!

Anonymous Lauren said ... (8:37 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:52 PM) :

better if they weren't cargo...

Anonymous Maryanne said ... (8:56 PM) :

what makes it work is the material of the jacket & shorts is similar. and the 3/4 sleeves with that bit of white peeking out.
took a plain khaki jacket and 'deconstructed it' perfectly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:10 PM) :

Yup....He just knows how to do it!

what kind of shoes are those?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 PM) :

Love the look especially since we are both of similar proportions. Hmmm...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:59 PM) :

its sooo specific, while I'm not into it, I get it. And he pulled it off really well.

Blogger fashioneggpplant said ... (12:32 AM) :

indeed, quite difficult for the majority of males to pull-off though

Anonymous Next Century Sean said ... (12:57 AM) :

Combined yes, but only in France and/or Italy most likely...even in NY it might just come off as sloppy. But if a man is confident and can carry himself...it just might work. A canvas briefcase of some sort would have pulled it all together.

great picture that sums up the Italian male vanity: the strait-jacket to emphasize the figure, the forced performance of arms and legs tanning, the ankle bracelet (no, I can't stand it!), the rolled sleeves (of jacket!)... at least, tell me that you were in a seaside town!

Blogger Claudia Zander said ... (3:25 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:03 AM) :

Sorry Sart, but in my opinion this is a truly unsuccessful combination of separates!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:54 AM) :

It looks OK from that viewpoint, but would you want to see it coming towards you?

Blogger rog70 said ... (6:02 AM) :

maybe you had to be there? it looks silly to me. the cargo shorts and jacket look bad. those shoes aren't right for the jacket. and with all those pockets available, he still has to carry his camera?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 AM) :

Doesn't work at all...

What a great inspiration for most American men this summer!!!! So tired of the same old bland Kaki bermudas!!! Dress it up with a coordinated linen jacket and you look polished already. Can I forward that picture to all my male friends? ;)

Cargo... as in: escargot my car go? If not dont go there or leave me be while you go at it...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:44 PM) :

It's all about the proportions, and this guy got them right. The shorts don't balloon out either.

For this to work, I'm thinking the cargo shorts need to stop just above the knee. Going sockless in sneakers helps keep the look casual chic instead of casual sloppy.

Of course, it helps to have a great body and, in this case, muscular legs.

Blogger Catherine said ... (2:48 PM) :

Anonymous tallulah said ... (3:40 PM) :

Reminds me of those children's picture books where you mismatch the top of one person to the bottom of another. Sorry - none to keen on this one but does provoke a reaction.

Anonymous Gem said ... (5:52 PM) :

looking gooood

Anonymous Daniel said ... (6:39 PM) :

that looks like CRAP! Cargo shorts = the devil

Blogger PAPA NUI said ... (1:25 AM) :

Why does an item of clothing have to belong to the domain of any one group, in this case frat boys?
If you think that then it says a lot for A&F marketing. Isn't it more about lifestyle? If you live on the coast it makes perfect sense but perhaps less so if you're from the city. Stereotyping sucks at the best of times and with all things there's cargo shorts and then there's cargo shorts. It's like saying polo shirts are only for upper Eastside tossers.

Blogger lollipop4598 said ... (2:00 AM) :

Its nothing terrible. But it doesn't exactly work. He either needs to take off the jacket and shirt and put on a henley or t shirt; Or else, he needs to take off the jacket and put on some summer slacks or jeans. They just don't go together. I like the shorts, and I like the jacket. But not together. I do like the ankle thing he has going.

Anonymous art deco engagement rings said ... (7:53 AM) :

I love his individual style!

Anonymous Simon Brown said ... (7:56 AM) :

Your caption appears to have been shortened Scott, the words "to make the wearer look an utter mess" appear to have be missing. It's fair to say I'm a fan of neither combats (whatever their length/fit) or pushed up coat sleeves on a suit or other semi formal coat.

Good photograph though, held detail throughout the brightness range.

Anonymous John said ... (10:01 AM) :

I like this ... never thought I would say that as I normally hate cargo shorts.

Anonymous Tanica said ... (11:30 AM) :

That is interesting.

Anonymous Charlotte K said ... (12:23 PM) :

I'm against the cargo shorts look. OK, at the beach, in the country, maybe. I think it's dumbing down men, just like the baseball cap (esp. backwards). I'm tired of men dressing like third graders. I want them to start looking like men again. Put on the long pants, dudes!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 AM) :

I completely agree with Charlotte K.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:55 AM) :

Hate it. Looks far too sloppy and those shoes are the final nail in the coffin! Sandals would have maybe rescued this outfit? Maybe. Doubtful though

Blogger Jet Tech said ... (4:47 AM) :

i like it. very bold

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:23 AM) :

I definitely believe that he gets away with it. Someone else might not have done it but that´s exactly what style is about, to know what suites you and what doesn´t.

Anonymous vhound said ... (11:17 AM) :

Nope. This just doesn't work. Maybe if the shorts were a few inches longer, and the cargo pockets were lower. Or if he had skinnier knees. And that little ankle bracelet just emphasizes the stubbiness of the whole ensemble. A hat could possibly redeem it somewhat....

Anonymous Christina said ... (12:06 PM) :

This is a guy who does what he wants - I like it because of that! Not everyone would have the guts to wear this.

Blogger Benji said ... (4:45 PM) :

Perhaps if everything else was a little more rugged looking or had a military style to it. But with everything else, the shorts look out of place in my opinion. The colors all match but that's about it.

Without the cargo pockets this would have worked well in an understated way.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:56 AM) :

I love it ;)

Blogger alastair said ... (6:01 PM) :

Oh I dunno if I would agree with 'successful', but then I have a very healthy bias against cargo shorts!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:10 PM) :

just wondering where he's headed. he wouldn't get past some doors. :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 PM) :

No. No, they can't.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 AM) :

Ummmmm... no. The top half looks ok in and of itself, as does the bottom half (though I'd lose the ankle-watch affectation). But put the two together and the result is what looks like a superannuated frat boy, bless his earth-toned little heart, desperately clinging to his youth.

Blogger lollipop4598 said ... (1:21 PM) :

I don't see why people don't like cargo shorts in general. I think they can look great on a guy. I am also a bit weirded out that people talk like a fashion choice is a sign of intellect or maturity. You can't tell any of that from what a person wears. Some of the smartest people I know dress like crap.

Anonymous Dane said ... (1:32 AM) :

What is everyone's beef with cargo shorts? Its not going away anytime soon and, for men at least, its a staple. Some people even look great in them. This pair of shorts are perfect. Slightly above the knee and with just enough room in the fit so it does not look like a tent. THe color palette works but I wished you shot a frontal to see the rest of the outfit. Not for eveyone but inspiring nonetheless.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:02 AM) :
