July 4th Weekend in Capri

Over July 4th weekend, Tod's invited Garance and myself to Capri for the opening of their Jackie Onassis photo exhibit.

As you can imagine, the images are beautiful, inspiring, and poetic; see Garance's post, here.

Mr. Della Valle and crew were incredible hosts and allowed us to see a side of Capri that a first-time visitor rarely experiences. For a location as famous as Capri to live up to decades of hype seemed impossible, and yet it was even more enchanting than I had expected.

This rugged landscape has been tamed by the luxurious Italian lifestyle: food, architecture, the highest standard of living. Capri will be high on my list of favorite locations, going forward.

A big big thanks to Diego, Andrea, Sarika, and Mariacristina.

The bougainvillea flowed down the architecture and mountainside like a beautiful floral fog.

Super-host Diego Della Valle.

Lee Radziwill at the exhibit's opening party.

Walking around Capri, you really have to keep your eyes open. Every corner you turn there is a new tableau.

Aerial view (well, actually - from just really high up the mountainside!) of the world-famous La Fontelina lido.

This shot is really for Garance. A native Corsican, she has taught me to appreciate the diversity of flora and fauna a Mediterranean island can offer. The smells are just incredible.

Scenes from the "Deva," easily one of the most beautiful sailboats on the Mediterranean.

Jose Miguel Antunez, joining us on the crew. He is a legendary basketball player.

I don't really know anything about boats, but every detail I saw on the "Deva" was beautiful - here, the leather-covered rings on the main mast.

Beautiful, and your description of the bougainvillea is marvellously dark.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:44 AM) :

At 19 I landed on Capri. Seasick. wondering if I was hallucinating vertically. I was. Jackie was there. at the next table, strolling those magical lanes, in the shops, trying on the same sandals i was, when i was. We began saying Ciao to each other, as if this piece of heaven and us being neighborly was normal as rain! Heady stuff. (even with Jackie and her Paps and posse, things where much more casual then). We lived in our white capris on Capri. I never saw Princess Lee there. But they have been my style icons all my life. When facing a fashion dilema, i will catch myself with a giggle musing..."what would Lee/Jackie wear"? Always that involves removing an accessory too many.

The spectacular beauty and smells and style of Capri affected me so deeply, that after a career in NYC, I moved permanently to a warm lush mountainous tropical Pacific island because parts of it reminded me of dreamy Capri. (no Italian citizenship).

Lee looks wonderfully elegant, as always. My hanai daughter, upon seeing this photo, commented that Princess Lee wears her hair like mine and dresses like i do. Ahem, I let it go and didn't tell her it was the other way 'round.

Thanks for the memories Scott and Garance. How wonderful you are living la dolce vita! You are both such an inspiritation to me.

Don't those Deva leather wrappings look like Hermes saddlery craftsmanship? although i'm sure they are from some eminent Italian house. Exquisite.

Annabella

ps. Have you slept with an open window next to a blooming mock orange hedge yet? You will. Heaven. Heaven.

Incredibly perfect and Ms.Radziwill photographed with a cigarette, just makes her human in an otherwise unreal and mythical place like Capri!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:14 PM) :

What was I thinking? So at first I got lost in your dreamy Capri and Princess Lee photos. So much beauty.

I forgot to say how much I love your photo of Diego Della Vella, biz/marketing genius behind the his iconic family Tod's brand. He cuts such a handsome figure with the kindest of eyes and such a warm welcoming smile. Indeed, he looks for all the world like a "super host" should look. Just the person with whom you want to enjoy Passagiata.

And this, this is the Holy Grail of marketing: Capri, "Jackie In Capri" exhibit... on Capri. More high style at high season. Jackie's sis Princess Lee, life/ style/design icon on Capri for exhibit. gorgeous leather work on the exquisite Deva a la Tod's....and drum roll, hiring the A team of G+S to tell this dreamy style story in their own unique wonderful ways!

Not a Tod's driver/bag/bauble in sight,as far as I can see. all i want to do is go buy a bunch.. NOW! With my new Tod's i will instantly be transported there. Um, It's working. Look for me.

So well done, Scott and Diego,
"Happy Times" indeed.

Anonymous Alessia said ... (2:18 PM) :

Hello. I work in Amalfi and it is spectacular to watch these photos that represent Capri so similar to Amalfitan Coast. In paritcular, I find that the forth photo is wonderful beacuse it remind me Sr. Chiara Cloister in Naples. It reminds me also our grondomthers who couldn't stay outside for a long time in particulare without a man of the family and so they spent large part of their life in little and beautiful garden looking after theri family.
And to finish I think that people who love these places ha to read "Arturo's Island" of Elsa Morante, which is set in Procida and describe very well our past life.
