Anonymous emmadajska said ... (7:32 PM) :

Horn-rimmed glasses - the popularity of the bold ones is enormous (it's even hard to find subtle frames these days), maybe it's just the shape that suits her well? Plaid shirt - who doesn't have at least one? Unusual accessory - you mean a bike lock? Maybe she's actually riding a bike? And the cigarettes - yes, deliberately placed and exposed but it's rather typical for the teenagers, some kind of teenage pugnacity (so visible in her stare and expression)... As you certainly know, it's typical for young people to use the visual "code" and somehow symbolic items to demonstrate a certain attitude. All of these things are as old as the world, older than the recent popularity of the world "hipster". In my opinion, the "hipster look" is often a cliche, designed from many fancy (but sometimes kitschy) items that don't create a strong, original entirety and lacks the personality and character. This girl, for me, certainly HAS both character and personality, she uses and mixes these items knowingly and with taste. I object to use the world "hipster" as a pejorative describing somebody who expresses his knowledge and familiarity with popular culture, teenage culture, street culture, even mass media cliches. It's a little bit tricky, but in this case I agree it's rather a "kerouac-ambiance" look than swanking about a collection of fancy items.

Blogger Hannah said ... (7:40 PM) :

@ Marc: Thank you for saying so... I have to agree, it's standard hipster. Sart has a thing for chain bike locks though.

I would have taken the cigs for crayola crayons. Nice lips. I also like her long, straight fingers.

Interesting, a hipster on the sartorialist. I'm not sure what to think. 75% of the folks I hang out with dress like this. Maybe this is making it hard for me to get perspective.

I second emmadajska's post. Please, let's not add hipster scolding to cigarette and bike helmet scolding. All are tiresome and none reflect well upon their practitioners.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:24 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:38 AM) :

The hair puzzled for a moment, but New York, summer and bike helmet, and all becomes rational. It somehow looks good on her.

Anonymous Kali said ... (2:47 AM) :

I like her leggings, what a nice texture...glasses & hair are to lips as shirt & cigarettes are to leggings?

Sleek modern athletic clothes merged seamlessly with the vintage utilitarianism in the top half... And then the bike lock belongs to both worlds!

Anonymous Designer Dresses said ... (8:32 AM) :

Sometimes I wonder how you find so much beauty in everyday things, this picture seems like a wonderful example of style that we overlook so often.
I love how she has such simple accessories: stud earrings and horn rimmed glasses and keeps her makeup simple to match it. Her lips are the most obvious feature and you can see that was a deliberate highlighting of one of her stronger features :)
I have often felt that plaid is difficult to use as something feminine but I like how this works.

Anonymous Mel said ... (8:38 AM) :

Blogger Daryl said ... (8:55 AM) :

Luscious lips!

Anonymous Victoria Regia said ... (10:33 AM) :

Marc's comment is too funny!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:37 AM) :

This includes elements of standard street style that you could find in any East Art Village in a few major cities - however, it's a nice contrast from elements that you'd find in standard runway style that we see often on this blog.

I've seen hairstyles similar to this on a few girls. Some go as far as to shave one side. It's interesting, and when done on the right person, adds a ton of attitude and boldness to their look. It could appear to be gimmicky or 'off' if not executed properly, though.

Yes, we all see the Evo Mini U-Lock with bike chain and the Spirits in the breast pocket. But no one else noticed the button on the opposing breast pocket? I think it was intentionally pinned there to create a more balanced look. I love subtle details!

Great shot.

Blogger anthony said ... (11:50 AM) :

Anonymous r. pollack said ... (12:25 PM) :

Not disdain. Her look is a little mistrustful, which is what you would expect from a young person who obviously has her own mind. I like this belle of the isle.

Blogger Jelliy said ... (12:33 PM) :

What is the relation between hipster and fashion? Inclusive? Exclusive? Overlapping? Answers please

Blogger Charlotte said ... (12:53 PM) :

I love the glasses. I really like how she is in a pretty casual, laid back outfit, but from her stance, and the way and has a nose and chin held up she could be an aristocrat or royal, someone of great importance.
There's a really pretty girl behind the glasses and mousy hair. Her lips remind me of Scarlett Johannson. x

Blogger cara said ... (1:00 PM) :

Do you ever go to Seattle, or especially Olympia Washington?

If not you should. You'll get a lot of punk looks like this, but people there are also endlessly artful and unique in the way they dress~

Anonymous Maryanne said ... (1:34 PM) :

and to think once we have grown up and become adult, that we leave high school labels behind.
yet i keep reading 'hipster' and ' fashionista' responses.

to each his/her own.

i will say this, the diamond earring stud & pillowly pink pout are what puts the spin on the masculine attire.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:55 PM) :

I can imagine that bike chain getting pretty heavy. I swear I know this girl though....lips are throwing me off though. Maybe just a similar hair style, glasses, eyes, and fashion taste.......which means I probably know this girl.

Anonymous lisa said ... (2:09 PM) :

Blogger ash said ... (1:27 PM) :

@jelliy:
I think hipsters make fashion with less, for the most part. Or at least that's how it started. I live in Seattle and what was once original is totally run of the mill now. You can't turn around on Cap Hill without seeing someone dressed like this, right down to the pin on her pocket probably professing something "radical." This haircut was standard 20-something queer a couple of years ago and is now standard hipster. Not to say this isn't a great shot and the girl isn't beautiful. But walking around my neighborhood sometimes is like going to a party where everyone is wearing the same basic little black dress. Even so, I don't want to live anywhere else.

Anonymous Melissa L. said ... (2:31 PM) :

It's interesting - and I see the value in this picture, but I'm put off by her hair. It looks dirty. And the cigarettes in her pocket. ): Wearing a bike chain around your waist isn't extremely practical either - looks very heavy. Her face is absolutely stunning though, and I envy anyone who can pull off statement glasses like that.

Anonymous Dorothy.C. said ... (3:30 PM) :

Hold on there....I simply said girl crush...not escaped mental patient/wing nut stalker girl crush!...restraining orders are such a turn off!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:58 PM) :

Ah yes, the "hipster" uniform. I'm sure her fixed gear bike is just out of frame. I personally love this look. Love that it's unisex, comfortable, and completely stylish. Come to East Vancouver, Canada. This is how every person between 21-31 is dressing.

Blogger ChalcedonyofSF said ... (11:44 PM) :

I have a feeling she doesn't quite care what we think of her. However, I do like how she wears her bike chain - THAT works.

Blogger lollipop4598 said ... (1:13 AM) :
