Comments on "On the Street....Tompkins Square Park, New York"
effortless. stunning.
I really need to get one of those bike locks...
Looks like she's taking a break from biking
I use those glasses!
I like her style....and your style....always!
^-^
So very San Francisco
Hmm, I admire her confidence to have such an unusual hairstyle, but at the same time, I don't know...
punx on the sartorialist? oh yes!
The glasses are awesome

Rise of the hipsters. Horn-rimmed glasses? Check. Plaid shirt? Check. Unusual accessory? Check. American Spirit cigarettes in front shirt pocket? Check.
hahaha... Marc, that's awesome! So right. Love the picture with your comment.

"Very SF" but also very Portland. Oh how I miss PDX...
cheers,

She's stunning. She actually looks like my wife's identical twin but with short hair. It's beautiful in every way. I really like the frame she's wearing, complements the shape of her face and makes it look harmonious and elegant.
Super great shots

If she kissed me with those lips I would faint. The glasses are very very cool.
fantastic girl
Love the shirt and her attitude!! Hot xx

Horn-rimmed glasses - the popularity of the bold ones is enormous (it's even hard to find subtle frames these days), maybe it's just the shape that suits her well? Plaid shirt - who doesn't have at least one? Unusual accessory - you mean a bike lock? Maybe she's actually riding a bike? And the cigarettes - yes, deliberately placed and exposed but it's rather typical for the teenagers, some kind of teenage pugnacity (so visible in her stare and expression)... As you certainly know, it's typical for young people to use the visual "code" and somehow symbolic items to demonstrate a certain attitude. All of these things are as old as the world, older than the recent popularity of the world "hipster". In my opinion, the "hipster look" is often a cliche, designed from many fancy (but sometimes kitschy) items that don't create a strong, original entirety and lacks the personality and character. This girl, for me, certainly HAS both character and personality, she uses and mixes these items knowingly and with taste. I object to use the world "hipster" as a pejorative describing somebody who expresses his knowledge and familiarity with popular culture, teenage culture, street culture, even mass media cliches. It's a little bit tricky, but in this case I agree it's rather a "kerouac-ambiance" look than swanking about a collection of fancy items.
@ Marc: Thank you for saying so... I have to agree, it's standard hipster. Sart has a thing for chain bike locks though.
I would have taken the cigs for crayola crayons. Nice lips. I also like her long, straight fingers.

Great. Plaid. Shirt.
Love it.
Such an intense stare, love it!
La Petite Marmoset
Interesting industrial look with the lock
love the glasses and the plaid shirt. looks effortlessy cool.
http://lucyandtherunaways.blogspot.com
funky. shy. and unassuming.
I have always wished I had beautiful little pillow lips like hers.
What a lucky girl and whomever she kisses.
Interesting, a hipster on the sartorialist. I'm not sure what to think. 75% of the folks I hang out with dress like this. Maybe this is making it hard for me to get perspective.
is it just me or does anyone else think she looks like scarlett johansson?!
she is a beautiful girl her feminine looks shine through her boyish style
She can pull this off. Well done.
Love her unique style!
http://thefashionlatte.blogspot.com
I think I'm the only one for whom the look does nothing.
But I keep going back and back to have another look at her face.
@emmadajska,
" You're a real gone gal". The Howl Festival was this past weekend at Tompkins Square Park.
Your collages show great promise.
Loved 'Little Beatles'.
So great. She looks like the love child of a grown-up Shiloh Jolie-Pitt and early ScarJo from Ghostworld. With a dash of Joey Ramone swagger thrown in the mix. No high fashion, high heels or expensive bag needed.
But everybody seems to have missed the very lovely light coming in from the left.
The combination of her feminine features, particulary the sensual lips, and the masculine style is a very sexy. I'm thinking Katherine Hepburn.
Stunning, Scott. You're taking street photography (which of course you pioneered) to another level.
Many thanks for your truly inspiring work!
Great haircut, glasses, plaid button-down and fixed gear chain padlock phenomenon...love it! Does she actually have her bike with her? Or just wearing the chain as a true fixie enthusiast might?
Gorgeous young woman. I agree with the Scarlett Johansson comparison--BUT this woman hasn't been through the Hollywood mill, so she is way more interesting because she is doing her own thing.
perfect for the age and for her age.. Truly the look of today's youth; Dressing for who you are, not what you want to be.. http://oslolook.blogspot.com/
Love her blouse and belt-thingy! Especially the belt, really creative
xoxo Sootjeelina <3
i want my hair like this!!
www.styleapalace.com
she has pretty lips.
She's stunning.
And to Monsieur Da Chump--digging the poetry, especially today's.
I second emmadajska's post. Please, let's not add hipster scolding to cigarette and bike helmet scolding. All are tiresome and none reflect well upon their practitioners.
Are you sure that's not Portland?
The hair puzzled for a moment, but New York, summer and bike helmet, and all becomes rational. It somehow looks good on her.
Love her glasses and the belt. She's cool :-)
I like her leggings, what a nice texture...glasses & hair are to lips as shirt & cigarettes are to leggings?
Sleek modern athletic clothes merged seamlessly with the vintage utilitarianism in the top half... And then the bike lock belongs to both worlds!
The glasses are so much! I also like this shirt to wear it with jeans... so casual...

cool plaid shirt and great photo!
www.abitoffashion.com
Well personally I prefer hipsters to fashionistas if we're going to hurl labels around, but she's just great regardless. And I bet her bike lock actually gets used - some of the cycle chic crew seem to ride one block then pose.
reminds me of scarlett johansson in 'scoop' even though the hair is different..xx meenal
Pretty nice girl and beautiful shirt!
A true natural beauty. I love that her hair her nails are not salon perfect.
i like her. really cool.
she looks like a female kurt cobain.
her glass likes nice
not so smart but freedom
with her chain!!
Cool as. I love it when you include proper street style - the fashionistas with bags of money get boring.
xxx
androgyny on the come back....cool
chain belts? wow
http://themadtoter.blogspot.com
Sweet..I think I just found a new girl crush!...too bad I'll never know who this gorgeous gal is...different coast, different country, different generation.
FANTASTIC BELT...
Wow.. you look gorgeous dear..
love that outfit...
_____________
Love the glasses... very vintage!
I agree with the Scarlet Johanson comparation :)
Sometimes I wonder how you find so much beauty in everyday things, this picture seems like a wonderful example of style that we overlook so often.
I love how she has such simple accessories: stud earrings and horn rimmed glasses and keeps her makeup simple to match it. Her lips are the most obvious feature and you can see that was a deliberate highlighting of one of her stronger features :)
I have often felt that plaid is difficult to use as something feminine but I like how this works.
She's a dead ringer for MNDR singer Amanda. Bang Bang Bang.
Luscious lips!
Marc's comment is too funny!
This includes elements of standard street style that you could find in any East Art Village in a few major cities - however, it's a nice contrast from elements that you'd find in standard runway style that we see often on this blog.
I've seen hairstyles similar to this on a few girls. Some go as far as to shave one side. It's interesting, and when done on the right person, adds a ton of attitude and boldness to their look. It could appear to be gimmicky or 'off' if not executed properly, though.
Yes, we all see the Evo Mini U-Lock with bike chain and the Spirits in the breast pocket. But no one else noticed the button on the opposing breast pocket? I think it was intentionally pinned there to create a more balanced look. I love subtle details!
Great shot.
Nicely jacked in. Bam! and the bike chain gets snapped by a boltcutter.
wait, hipsters are fashionable now? They're going to have to come up with a whole new look!
I do enjoy her look of disdain, well played
cool!
http://www.muzaiki.blogspot.com/
geeky chic and totally effortless..reminds me of my college days when i used to be so effortless and in glasses..now i dont want to get out without my lenses!!!! though sometimes i do!!....oh the cruel world of fashion :((
Not disdain. Her look is a little mistrustful, which is what you would expect from a young person who obviously has her own mind. I like this belle of the isle.
What is the relation between hipster and fashion? Inclusive? Exclusive? Overlapping? Answers please
I love the glasses. I really like how she is in a pretty casual, laid back outfit, but from her stance, and the way and has a nose and chin held up she could be an aristocrat or royal, someone of great importance.
There's a really pretty girl behind the glasses and mousy hair. Her lips remind me of Scarlett Johannson. x
http://londonbeanlovesfashion.blogspot.com/
Do you ever go to Seattle, or especially Olympia Washington?
If not you should. You'll get a lot of punk looks like this, but people there are also endlessly artful and unique in the way they dress~
and to think once we have grown up and become adult, that we leave high school labels behind.
yet i keep reading 'hipster' and ' fashionista' responses.
to each his/her own.
i will say this, the diamond earring stud & pillowly pink pout are what puts the spin on the masculine attire.
I can imagine that bike chain getting pretty heavy. I swear I know this girl though....lips are throwing me off though. Maybe just a similar hair style, glasses, eyes, and fashion taste.......which means I probably know this girl.
well, i have no Hollywood reference, but this look is a good original :)
the bike chain!
I miss my hair being like this! That chain around her waist is so massive! Interesting.
http://the-conceptual.blogspot.com/
Beaut lips haircut glasses and a cool shirt!
www.shervinsworld.com
She looks a little bit like Scarlett Johansson!
i really hope that's not a packet of ciggies in her front pocket :(
Thrasher Oath button is crucial
@Dorothy C: she's a wonderful server at Cafe Select, a Swiss cafe in Nolita. And to the earlier commenters: she's everything the picture captures. Shy but nice, stylish and very beautifully unassuming.
so beautiful girl and strong style wow :D
Great hair!
This girl actually reminds me of Scarlett Johansson.
@jelliy:
I think hipsters make fashion with less, for the most part. Or at least that's how it started. I live in Seattle and what was once original is totally run of the mill now. You can't turn around on Cap Hill without seeing someone dressed like this, right down to the pin on her pocket probably professing something "radical." This haircut was standard 20-something queer a couple of years ago and is now standard hipster. Not to say this isn't a great shot and the girl isn't beautiful. But walking around my neighborhood sometimes is like going to a party where everyone is wearing the same basic little black dress. Even so, I don't want to live anywhere else.
It's interesting - and I see the value in this picture, but I'm put off by her hair. It looks dirty. And the cigarettes in her pocket. ): Wearing a bike chain around your waist isn't extremely practical either - looks very heavy. Her face is absolutely stunning though, and I envy anyone who can pull off statement glasses like that.
Hold on there....I simply said girl crush...not escaped mental patient/wing nut stalker girl crush!...restraining orders are such a turn off!!
Ah yes, the "hipster" uniform. I'm sure her fixed gear bike is just out of frame. I personally love this look. Love that it's unisex, comfortable, and completely stylish. Come to East Vancouver, Canada. This is how every person between 21-31 is dressing.
I have a feeling she doesn't quite care what we think of her. However, I do like how she wears her bike chain - THAT works.
Aw... cute little hipster girl. I really like the lip color. A dark vivid pink is it? Im pretty sure Ill be looking for that exact lip color in that exact matte finish tommorrow.
Realllly want that shirt!
Now, this is really why I follow this blog - the combination of different styles from high fashion to this adorable cool real person!
Other than the fact that this girl is a textbook example of a "type" I don't see anything here.
She looks like a byrd. Hair resembles a feather cut.
typical hipster-wear; nothing special here in my eyes...
for a second i thought she was Michelle Williams
Great, now we need a picture of the Fleet Foxes guy in plaid
She looks a little like Michelle Williams - Heath Ledger's baby mama.
Say what you like about the hipster vibe, she wears those frames really well.
are those jeggings?!
c. you look pretty.hug from zurich
God, she's like a female clone of me. Creepy. (But awesome.)
