On the Street....Tompkins Square Park, New York
The Lower East Side and especially Tompkins Square Park has been on fire lately. Such a great variety of style is blooming in the park right now.
This is Claire. She is wearing a hand-me-down dress from her mother. I love the wispy little summer dresses that are starting to appear but a more tailored, shaped dress like this is sooo flattering. To me this is vintage at its best; it draws inspiration from the past without feeling "costumey."
Tonight you will see a photo of 87 year-old artist KC Rowland; he's like the orignal Prada. Tweed hat, tortoise glasses, snake ring, Cuban shirt and leather sandals with socks. He's a true original.

Lovely.

What a sweet photo! The shaped dress is indeed very flattering. I love to see vintage done well and it's wonderful to know a little of the back story, too.

love that park, and love this shot!
very lady-like and lovely, in a very modern and bohemian sense of the word. unusual and different, poetic and earthy...perfection!
just lovely!
So demure! And the lighting is amazing :-)
The artistry of the print makes me think of Sonia Delaunay.
Definitely not the Tompkins Square Park of my younger days.
I really like this picture.
it's obvious she's in on it, so I want to ask a question.
When meeting people that you want a picture of, how do you approach them? How do you ask them to participate in your picture?`
Thanks for all the inspiration!
I love the way she is looking at you ! She has a real "frimousse" SunnySide
I love vintage dresses. My mom gave my sister and I some and I still wear them all the time!
such a lovely picture :)
I love her dress btw!

The great thing about vintage is indeed being able to use great designs from the past, those seem to be timeless (within reasons!)
I get compliments very regularly on my 1970s-1980s & 1990s Lanvin suits! I could probably wear them forever.
Shapely summer dresses are nice too. I like shape; clean shapes.

couldn't find who's he? but sounds promising
can't wait...
I love her hair style very much. I saw this style many many time; however, going with this dress, it looks amazingly stylish and different. She is beautiful as well. I wish I could make friend with her.
how wonderful to be right there and have a daily show of 'variety of style blooming' daily in front of the camera
Very feminine dress indeed. I don´t like shapeless dresses. Lovely vintage touch!
sooo cuute…I have to admit that I am falling in love with your blog.
Maybe you'll have time to visit my blog:)

i love your blog, always a window of inspiration
She looks so polished and neat. I have to agree, clothes my mother used to wear at my age were more tailored and put together. It seems that the mass production of clothes have left very little time for all these important details!

Wow I love the dress. It also has the advantage of being unique. So many look alikes when it comes to changing seasons... The girl is so cute!
This must be one of the most beautiful photos ever on The Sartorialist.
this is one hand-me-down dress that Marc Jacobs would approve of. It looks very current and the young lady wears it well.
So simple and pretty, definitely vintage at its best

I wish my friend Milena from Rotterdam would dress like this. AMAZING!!
love the tailored vintage look, so classy

BEAUTIFUL vintage dress--and the fact that it is a hand-me-down from her mother makes it even more serendipitous!
lovely....looks like a real vintage photo...
it's very stylish yet subtle,I absolutely love it!

I love that she is wearing flats. Vintage dress with high heels usually looks costumey. I am bored with heels right now, skirts look better with flats, flares looks better with flats, only skinny jeans looks great with heels :D
She's so cute! Love her dress!

This girl is so warm and inviting. It is so wonderful that she is able to wear her mother's vintage things. Sometimes those are the best fashion finds!

this photo just evokes everything that is great about spring/summer clothing and the weather that allows us to wear it...just great! love that early evening light =D
The Sartorialist used "sooo" in a sentence?! Beautiful dress but that shocked me even more. Garance must be rubbing off on you ;)
I need that dress! She made it fabulous by wearing it with those sandals.
So beautiful...so lovely! I love that she's also wearing a dainty watch which looks vintage. Her whole look is so well put together!
soo cute :)

I love the dress and also couldn't help noticing that her hair style is one that could have been worn by her mother at the time she wore the dress.
just gorgeous.
I never would have thought this was a hand-me-down and I think that speaks to the quality of the dress and how she wears it.
she has just the personality to do justice to the vintage dress...so sweet and simple..xx meenal
The simplicity of this dress brings to mind a new clothing line out of California, Cityzen Green.

she's gorgeous not only because of her dress...

Beautiful girl in a beautiful dress.

Now that's style--the dress seems to suit her perfectly--but what I find most intriguing here is her expression. You must have a terrific rapport with your subjects; she looks shy, but also delighted and proud to be photographed. The resulting image is just lovely.
(I can see the dress looking great with Docs and a denim jacket for fall, too.)
A million miles from the TSP I remember.
Lovely and charming dress ! Bravo for her mother !

i was just there yesterday! wish i had walked by. great pic
I was just there yesterday eating my lunch! Wish I had the right timing. Great pic, love the dress. Simple.
She looks so sweet! Love the vintage dress. And that long flowy hair is the perfect finishing touch.
i love the way she is wearing the watch. her posture is quite nice.
the field of focus causes the subject to rise from the ground and into the backlight...quite nice photography.
Wow--this is really "smart casual" wear. If something looks good it's never "out of fashion". I am so glad vintage is slowly losing its negative perception.
love the dress!! and the light of the pic. lovely!
She really is beautiful. The lighting in this shot is gorgeous, too.

This photo and it's subject are stunning. I hate to call you on this but Tomkins is in the east village not on the lower east side
My ancestral homeland! My mom was born on 8th st between avenues B and C. I can't help but feel that the pulse of that neighborhood was passed down to me and still courses through my veins and inspires me daily (even though I live uptown).
the pattern and the neckline are so delicate and subtle. so lovely!
Lovely. absolutely lovely. This proves Style need not be complex.

model (face specifically) almost exactly resembles vintage photo of the grandmother from India two posts down. life is weird

The guy is cool, however my personal fashion hot button, especially living in the land of the supernerds (Silicon Valley), is sandals with socks. A real turnoff for me. No one can make it work.
He looked great until you got to his feet.....sandals demand bare feet!
what a cute and sweet girl, great photo!

It's Maria from West Side... really very sweet.
Love this photo.
The Lower East Side has always been one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city (if not my favorite). I lived there when I was in graduate school and loved walking around people-watching when I wasn't buried in books.
classy + dandy!

Sweet look, sweet story. It's always wonderful when you add a bit of back story to your photos.
Love it! Beautiful, natural, simple, not contrived like many of the looks on the street. Makes me want to talk to her.
