Back to Spain!
Hey guys,
I will be going back to Spain the first week of June to give two masterclasses on "Sartorialism," on behalf of Spanish telephone carrier Movistar.
I've been to Barcelona and Madrid a couple of times and I'm excited to go back. We're creating a little "Sartorialist Tour" of each city.
As part of the project I'll be participating in a livestreamed interview on Monday, 5/9, at 2 PM EST. If you'd like to watch, you can find it on their Facebook page (here).
If you've ever had a question for me, post it here and we will select a few to answer during the interview.

Fantastic news Scott !!! You are always welcome to our country.
I have a question: What do you know about Spanish designers and Spanish fashion ? What do you think we could do to promote the brand "Fashion from Spain" in the world ??
Thank you
Belen
enjoy Barcelona!!!you must visit the "sagrada familia" and eat some bravas in "bar tomas".
Great upcoming event! I would like to ask if some of your pictures meant to test the audience? In an intent to see the reaction of us all.

That´s good news!
Too many questions so I´m making a recommendation instead
If you´ve got any spare time at all, try "salmorejo" at "La Ardosa" which is next to where the interview will be held! Or stop by any place in Valverde street!
Enjoy Spain!
That is wonderful..barcelona is a city very close to my heart..i hope you'll share some of your candid shots here as well! all the best..really looking forward!! xx meenal

Where will you be in Barcelona, is it invitation only?!
will you ever come to Los Angeles? I'm sure my city won't disappoint sartorially.

Here's my question, Mr. Schumann:
"What are your exact criteria when you choose someone to photograph in the street?
Have fun in Spain! And, most of all, show us some stunning pictures!

you should try Bilbao, Basque Country, it is spectacular with 'street' fashion from old part to the new part of the city....
I always wonder: Are you're pictures truly spontaneous or do you compose them according to colour (and do you "add" accessories i.e. bikes, motorbikes, etc.?)?
What would you say are the key attributes that separate a sartorialist from just a well-dressed person?

Hi Scott, I would love to have your input about something. I am setting up a Fashion/Photography studio/Magazine in Barcelona. The general reaction when I tell people about it, is, "Fashion and Barcelona???", like if BCN and Fashion did not fit at all, or if they were worlds apart. Do you agree? What do you think about the Fashion in BCN? What about Spanish Fashion?
How do you go about choosing your subjects? You do not seem to choose ones that are conventionally fashionable. Though I must say they are very inspirational, and the quality of the photos somehow make them a lot more inspiring. I love your variety and the feel that you do not judge too much when taking your photos. But purely choose what is interesting. Would you agree that that is your approach?
Sincerely,
Annie
Dear Mr Schuman
Do you think that the constantly changing trends in fashion are harmful to creating a consistent style in menswear? And do you think that this flooding of the market may be why we no longer see the Cary Grants' of years gone by?
Hope this makes you interview
Rod.
Have a great trip!!
Don't miss the Nasty Mondays show, that's the place to be... Bring your camera! Every monday in Barcelona, one monday a month in NYC.

So glad for have u here again!
U should come to Seville, ud love it!

Just to say you're, Scott you're more than welcome in Madrid! I'll try to attend to follow you (pls publish places and dates in advance)
From an amateur "madrileño" photogapher interested in street-real-people (next week 2 days in Paris).
you should visit Seville too¡¡ It's an incredible place with incredible peoplee¡
Be sure to include Sevilla on your tour!!! Beautiful city!
We would love to see a focus on women "of a certain age" while you're in Europe. Middle-aged women are prized in this part of the world and it would be fun to see how they are stylishly attired while you are there. Baby-boomers need some guidance in this area!!! Look forward to seeing the 50-80 ladies!!
Most likely to be ur newest blog follower and I love it, my question is about the people that you photograph, are most of them in the fashion industry? To me a lot of them look like models and some look like they are posing although they still have the "Im just like your ordinary person down the street" look...
Como to Lisbon :) It's very close to Spain! There are some fashionable people here!
Wow that sounds really nice! ESPAÑA ;D
You should really come to Sweden some time, maybe in december, when it's stockholm fashion week :P
I know you have people telling you where to go all over the place. But I dream about Quimet Quimet in the Paral-lel neighborhood of Barcelona at any mention of the city. Most amazing, unique, and still authentic food I had during my months in Spain.
Mejillones. Boquerones. Yogur y salmon y miel... mm.
Great! www.copperetiquette.com
I would like to know how long you spend setting up each photo. Are most of them fairly candid or do you spend a lot of time composing them?

cool, I'll see you soon then!!!
I have a question:
How do you think Barcelona can improve a certain "position" in the fashion industry, having so many emergent designers& artist there is still a big lack of implication and development?!
http://fashiondoseblog.blogspot.com/
Now that is how red hair should be worn. Wonderful. I look forward to your Spanish images too.
woo I Love Barcelona! can't wait to see what you'll bring back!
Wonderful! Hope I'll get the chance to take some more pics with you!
Welcome to BCN!..... Good place to capture some different trends. It will be very sunny in june! Good luck!

Welcome to BCN! Very nice place to capture new and different trends!
Are any of these classes open to the public? I will be in Madrid!
As you are in Spain, why not pop across to Lisbon for the first time?
It's fantastic! Welcome to Spain again.
Now, that people know you, i suposse that will be easier to make photographs on the street, but when you started, there were no people who don't want them take pictures?
Estaremos encantados de recibirte,Mr Schuman.
Soy un gran seguidor tuyo y soy blogger gracias a ti y a tu trabajo.
Muchas gracias

what advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Sartorialist like you?
What defines the quality of elegance?
I completely enjoy your site. It has broadened my perspective; I accept style is subjective, intimate and misunderstood, at times. Therefore, I respect another person's choices and have developed an admiration for the differences in all of us.
Will you post the video on your blog? I cannot access Facebook while at work and will like the opportunity to watch even if not live. Enjoy Spain!
Great news! please update us on your schedule in Barcelona.
In your opinion what spanish fashion needs in order to be on the same level as Milan,Paris,NY?
thank you.
obviously you take gorgeous, thought provoking pictures and your preternatural eye for style is unparalleled. For you, I would think the hardest part of your job is when it comes to approaching someone to take their photo, specially in a foreign country where you can get lost in translation. Do you ever get shy or embarrassed? Has anyone ever turned you down?
-unapproachable.
Questions:
1) When will you be coming to visit Helsinki? I would recommend visiting other Nordic cities such as Helsinki and Copenhagen.
2) Do you know about famous Spanish shoe brands such as Carmina and Yanko?
You could come to Portugal and visit us! Just an hour by plane
Wow, I'm absolutely thrilled that you're coming back to Barcelona!! :) Is there any way we can attend the classes? Pleeease? I also have a question for the interview: Are you planning on doing another book? Thank you so much!! :D
Great news! I enjoyed your interview on style.com recently... I thought it was interesting to hear you don't think anyone with personal style blogs are really doing anything worthy of notice - considering you photograph personal style daily. I can't seem to bring myself to take shots of my outfits on my blog for that same reason... even though I have compliments daily & have been photographed myself for more than a few style blogs!!!!
http://inherentstylela.blogspot.com/
What started your interest in fashion? Did you attend fashion school? Where? Who inspired you towards the fashion world? What key aspects do you see that is in all 'good' fashion design (in your opinion).
I am a great fan of your work and since I am living in Barcelona I was wondering, is it possible to meet you?
if so please let me know:
anna.shulina@hotmail.com
About how long do you actually spend on the street each day? And which are your favorite pictures?
For you, is being a "Sartorialist" and photographing people's style on the streets just a hobby, or do you consider it a career/lifestyle?

What do you find the sweet spot on your 85 f1.2 to be? When you are photographing one person, how wide do you generally shoot (I realize this will change depending on the shot) just wondering if you tend towards a usual range.

My Friend, the city in Spain where people wear best is Seville. I´ve got no doubt abut it.
In addition, it is the most beautiful city ever!
Regards.
Hi!! I would like to know If you will organize a meeting or a conference OPEN to the public and in particular to fashion lovers and bloggers!
thanKs so much
Una pregunta for you:
"If the camera was turned on you and you were "sartorialised" what would you be wearing and why?"
Enjoy Spain!
I love Madrid! I hope you'll do some shots in las Austrias, I've seen some great outfits there!
Also - come to Brussels in July! It's beautiful. And I think you should come to Washington DC sometime.... while it's not at all known for its fashion, there are some great places around town - the Eastern Market always has a lot to offer in terms of fashion!
Hi Scott!we met last year at Pitti!
I looove photography and I would like to know when exactly you started taking pictures in your life and what you feel when you do this just for fun and not for a work...thank you for your time!
wow I have recently read that!
please if you have any doubt feel free to contact me
in my blog I have recommendations of places you can have lunch go out!
is in spanish you only have to translate it to english upside right!
have a nice trip and enjoy my country an my city!
ks from Madrid
I'm so envious--I absolutely love Spain--the architecture, the people and the food. Hope you have a wonderful time.
I run into you last time next to Just One. That neighboorhood "Salamanca" is classic (upper east side) and you will find senior sartorialists. Go to mercado de la paz food market for beautiful non tourist color.
For contrast see Malasaña and barrio de las letras, where there is a mix of edgy with old timers (less posh than Salamanca). If you are interested in a handful of unique clothing stores that dont sell the usual brands, or a reasonable tailor shoot me an email.
In Catalonia, why just go to Barcelona? You'd better hang you make some Catalan towns, and people there would see the original too. You can not only be big cities, too topical! Everyone does the same as you!
I got a question. When are u coming to Amsterdam?
Hello, I am very excited because of the upcoming event. I posted my question on the facebook page but I really am trying my luck by posting here as well...
The purpose of my question is to receive advice from you. How can a young man in today’s modern world with no prior experience on handling fabric, become a tailor. I would appreciate your sincere response. The reason I use the term "modern" in my question is because I was doing some research and it appears that a couple of decades ago schools for men’s tailoring were more present than now.
Thanks - RG
that's great!
you'll love our country "in which cities the tour will pass?
you should see the north of Spain, is beautiful
my question: how to introduce in the world of fashion?
thanks!
How did you choose to pursue photography as opposed to some other form of artistry? Do you feel that there are there other artistic avenues that you'd like to pursue in the future?
I'm from dominican republic, but i live in madrid!! great city to be inspired, how can normal girl like me can be in your masterclass!!!. Im a big fan!! your blog is great
I hope you could escape from tourist scene in Barcelona and have a breath; then take pictures of normal people.
Have a nice staying here.
a normal guy from Bcn
When are you coming to Sydney?
Hi Scott, What do you think about Spanish Streetstyle?, Who is your favourite spanish style icon?
Even after living in Madrid for 4 months, I find it difficult to see a characteristic that "defines" Spanish style. What would you notice about Spanish style that makes it unique?
I love your blog, and I would like to see you in your next trip to Madrid, as I did the other time you visited us.
People thinks your view is just fashion...I think is fashion and something more...how people show themselves in the street...is so interesting!
Repeat: I hope to see you soon.
Thnak you and regards

Are your masterclasses open the public in BCN? If does you like the sea you must visit la Costa Brava. My english is very bad but my paella is fantastic!!
Hello Scott what do you see in Spanish fashion that makes us different than the rest of the people?
Wellcome to BCN!
Are any of these classes open to the public?
You should definitely come to Seville! Too bad you've already missed the Feria. You could have witnessed our particular way of making fashion in southern Spain. It's far from what you usually shoot in fashion weeks and around the world, but I can assure you that it's really worth seeing. Enjoy my country anyway!:)
Hi,
What does a "Sartorialist Tour" entail? and when going out to shoot pictures do you have any "idea" of what you want or are going to shoot that day? Or does your EYE do the leading?
www.curatorsofstyle.com
We're waiting for your livestream event in Spain. We've posted here (textos en español):
http://thelifestylenews.blogspot.com/2011/05/sartorialist-en-accion.html
fantastic insight into your career. i enjoyed hearing your perspective on perfection and over processed photographs. it is clear that your photos are a true capture of reality of the person and the style.
i would like to mention one thing that was brought up during the interview. as you mentioned, there is often debate over a particular photograph. it would be enjoyable to see your comments or interaction in these debates. i don't think i have ever seen you comment on any conversation.
again, great interview. you have inspired many.
Great news!! Cheers from Seville!
What do you say to people when you first approach them to take their picture?
If you ever come to Portugal, please let me know, next door to Spain.....

I can imagine how amazing pics you'll take in Barcelona!!! I can't wait!
And I was wondering that would be more than great someone like you come to Brazil and take some pics that only you can take in the various different places that we have here...
As a São Paulo resident...my city will be always waiting for u! =]
Have a nice journey and very good inpirations!
What's next in style blogging? What do you foresee as the "next step" for style bloggers?
Cheers,
Stephanie
come back in Italy too :)) Rome is good for you...even Bologna :))
what is a basic for you (in clothes)?
Hey! it's possible to one of your masterclasses? where are they gonna be?
Te esperamos!!!
Canadian living in Spain recommends you visit Lovedispensary, calle barquillo 35, absolutely one of the coolest shops in Madrid.
Should go to Bilbao and San Sebastian. Good shops, great style and better food.
Please, don't miss San Sebastián, in the north. The most elegant city in Spain.
My questions:
After shooting someone, do you ever walk away wishing you knew more about the person?
Must you have permission to shoot and post a shot?
Hey!
I have always wondered where there is a quality men's tie store! I have seen many of your photos of men with such nice ties. I've recently been interested in Tom Ford but I was wondering if you could tell me some tie stores that are quality.
Thanks,
Will
While in Madrid check out a Bookstore/Wine/Cafe called Tipos Infames. So rad.
Come and visit us in Mallorca. We'll cook you great food!
Next year you should come to seville in the feria, and go to the bullfight, everybody is very well dressed and you will see women in their tipical dress, Seville in that season is a perfect balance of elegance and tradition, I'm sure it won't dissapoint you.

If you're coming to Madrid you should go to have dinner (or maybe lunch!) at ANANIAS in Calle Galileo. It is a little restaurant with typical food from Madrid and you know what? The whole restaurant is full of things from bullfights because the owner was a very famous "torero".

Enjoy beautiful Spain. I am sure you'll find inspiration there.
In Barcelona, the Barri de Gràcia and el Borne for quirky styles; the Turó Park area for fashionable ladies who lunch.
I missed your event at La Roca last year (I was in LA) and the one at the Beverly Center in LA (I was in Barcelona). When you are in Barcelona next, again I will be in LA... Oh well...
