Fendi Fall 2011
Some people have commented that they don't relate to the runways shots that I have posted on the blog during fashion week. They say they can't afford the clothes or the looks don't relate to their everyday lives.
I understand these comments but I challenge you to try and look at these runway shots in a new way.
Fendi, for example, was really about fantastic color combinations. Even if you didn't like the clothes you can focus on the color schemes. These suggestions of color can be used whether shopping Fendi, or Zara, or vintage.
Maybe another collection - like Yohji - would be all about proportion and texture. Wearing all black is difficult but new ideas in mixing shape and fabric textures can be invaluable in keeping a monotone wardrobe fresh.
Dries and Gaultier's strength's have always been their great ability to mix genres and cultural symbols. I love the idea of Tibetan Fireman.
All I'm saying is don't let the lack of funds keep you from having fun with fashion.

Oh my God,the shoes,the shoes,the shoes!!!!
As a super broke med student with kids, I love the runway shots for the exact reasons you suggested. Color schemes, textures, little details, hairstyles... Keep them coming.
makes me want to get a pair of colorful tights! what a cute way to integrate some color into your wardrobe!
I love the ochre color that everyone seems to have a version of for FW2011. Paired with a rust....mmmmmmm!
Oh man love the colour combos, the bags, the coats, THE TIGHTS. You could easily recreate a lot of these looks at a lower price point. I think this is my favourite Milan collection that I've seen.
Perfectly well said.
Great !
I love looking at the runway shows for inspiration in color parings, shapes, and yes, textures.
Sometimes the runways cause me to think about things that I already have in my closet in interesting and creative ways/parings that I wouldn't have otherwise considered!
(Plus, a girl can dream about the things she'd buy, right?!)
I completely agree with you, fashion shows are an occasion to watch something different and an inspiration for the everyday style.
Sorry for my english, i wrote only few words and i'm sure that there are like 10 errors!
I love your blog!
i've always looked at runway pictures in that mindset. you just made me realize that there are people who don't!
Love the mixing of colours. The clothing looks comfy.
I love the challenge of copying the best fashions for the lowest price! Find a sale, find the same thing in cotton instead of cashmere, whatever works!
i sweat these colored textured tights. everything else is just nice, but have mercy... those stockings are what make my heart go pitter patter.
Well put. And the muted outfits with bright stockings...amazing.

I'm glad that you touch this point.
Your pictures are my biggest inspiration in clothes. And sure, sometimes I saw al the editors, Anna, Gioavanna, etc, and I love how they look, and I wanna look like they look, but just one of their outfits would cost me half of my year at university. But I feel related with them in every sense, even with the runway shoots, because I don't see prices, I see ideas, colors, textures, actitudes.
SOmetimes I can't even afford ZARA clothes, and I really don't care. Is not about money, is about wanting to show something through your clothes. and if you stick on the idea of "how expensive is it!" you move inside the box.
I love the colores tights! want them all for winter!
i love the runway shots! runway or street...if you love fashion, then it's all the same in a way. certainly i can't afford anything on the runways but that doesn't make the beauty any less compelling...
Keep the runway pictures coming! It's about the concept. It's about what to look for into the seasons, it's about colors schemes, textures etc...Im a social worker with champange wishes and caviar dreams (on a shoe string budget)...Anybody can make it work. Either you find it at Nordstroms, Target, H&M, second hand or vintage. You just have to have the confidence to pull it off.
Tnx Scott. You are really lovely with us taking time to open minds.
those tights are to die for!! love the bold colours.
www.styleisalwaysfashionable.blogspot.com
absolutely loved the stockings. brought so much vibrance and spice to the collection.
http://wordbyjessie.com
ooh i love the shoes and the colours of the tights.
i love the runway shots- i feel like i'm learning about fashion today as i look through your pictures... i also agree with you and think that we could be inspired and take the runway to the streets in a more affordable fashion! i jumped on the sartorialist bandwagon 5 years late- but i'm happy that it's my latest obsession! i look forward to 9am-ish and 4pm-ish (eastern time) posts each day! it's a great break from homework!
LOVE LOVE LOVE.
i love those color combinations!
Love the pics and I want to have the coat from the first picture.
Lovely.

Thanks for addressing that, I think its very important for people to know that fashion isn't entirely based on wealth and exclusivity. Luxury is only a part, not the whole.
But the value of quality and craft in a luxury/higher end items is a whole other thing that needs to be said...
Scott - this is amongst your very best posts.
"Fendi, for example, was really about fantastic color combinations. Even if you didn't like the clothes you can focus on the color schemes. These suggestions of color can be used whether shopping Fendi, or Zara, or vintage."
Very important to stress that it's about STYLE not money.
dear Scott, you are absolutely right. ...and anyway since when all readers of glossy magazines can afford whatever these feature and advertise? this blog is not about tips of what to buy/wear. It is a treasure (for me), because it makes you do some people watching from home and "edits" fashion seasons
...since not everybody can make it to the shows either ! :P
I absolutely agree with you.Shocking colors are rocking everywhere;street, following seasons,blogsphere...I never steped by in here but I will do it for sure!Your vision it is quite certain!Congratulations!
LOVET THESE PHOTOS SCOTT! :D
I have seen your last posts from the FW and the are awesome!
Love!
I love this--I'm a public librarian, and it's certainly not for the high paycheck. I find the photographs on your blog regularly inspirational for all of the reasons you've listed.
Keep up the beautiful work, and thank you.
How can anyone interested in clothes say they cannot relate to the fashion shows? It all trickles down to the highstreet anyway... Just think of Amanda Priestley's fierce put-down of her assistant explaining where her blue sweater came from... I enjoy all your fashion show shots!
fashion=self expression
no matter what your budget!!!
xoxo
I think your runway shots are inspiring - the close-ins are inspiring for the colour and texture combinations.
p.s. I'm wearing cerise coloured tights as I type - long live bright legs!
You said it! Shape, colour, texture always translate into reality... no matter how far-fetched they may seem on the runway. Just think of how much you can get out of a Balenciaga show, for instance...
And Scott, you should try writing more... you sound real, intimate, colloquial and that's what your photos are all about too.
These are great pics - really inspiring! Thanks :)
www.malsen.dk
love the bright legwear.. nice
these are really gorgeous color combinations as you said. those yellow tights! in love. keep up posting, i love the street shots and runway shots all the same
afordable or not (UNFORTUNATELY) everyone's entitled to an opinion... on the other hand no one's forced to do so...
Scott's ability to see beyond the clothes (either as individual pieces or as a whole)is remarkable...
keep the good work...

There are people who don't give a rat's ass about fashion. I don't understand the universe they live in and don't want to live there either. So thank you for re-affirming why fashion may and can be relevent to all of us.
Totally agree - my goal with the runway is to simply get inspired. Then I head to my closet, H&M or the fabric sore. I find it also inspires my invitation designs.
What would help me see the fashion shots in the context you suggest would be able to see them in a set with similarly themed street shots - a set of photos where the theme is bright color or texture or whatever. You could do this with the categories feature you are currently using for My Favorites, Bicycles, etc.
I'm not a fashion or clothes person at all. But I enjoy your work very much because it gives me ideas I can actually use on how to have more fun with my look.
Thanks!
Oh, those shoes! So girly.
Love all of your shots-- street style or runway style. And I agree with you completely that inspiration can be found in both. -Angela
I have to say - I don't understand those comments at all. Yesterday I went to an amazing vintage shop here in Portland, and there was a beautiful bright aqua blue skirt and peachy orange bright bright bright shell with a ruffle neck... For 40 bucks, I felt like I was wearing Jil Sander colors.
The runway clothes themselves may be out of reach, but the concepts, colors and shapes are available for everyone. I already own a camel colored skirt - now I'm inspired to wear it with new red tights (that cost next to nothing).
Anyway, Sart, I'm sorry your readers are being such literalists.
Well put... it's all about inspiration while expressing yourself... who knows, you can be a muse to one of those designers...
http://twofoureightonenine.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-streets-on-world.html
I love the runways shots! please keep them coming!
I agree...I like to sew. I love to look at the runway fabrics and overall shapes and think about what would work for me. I would love that coat in the top shot & I know I could make it. It's about ideas, textures, colors, shapes...
For some readers to say they are disappointed in your runway shots makes no sense to me. First off,the reason I LOVE to read your blog is because it comes from YOUR perspective. You have an ability to seek out and document beauty and style in a way that is very accessible to an average person.
I think it is fascinating to see runway shots that are not from style.com and that give the viewer a "insider" feeling when they see them. I also think it's important to provide inspiration to help cultivate people's personal style, which(in my opinion),fashion shows help to do. So, thank-you for taking photos and thank-you for sharing them. Be it street shots of duct taped boots, or behind the scenes runway shots from Jonathon Saunders (loved that show!)
so retro chic
I totally agree with you - your runway shots definitely are inspiring! All the colors, shapes and textures give me great ideas to spice up my wardrobe. And yes I'm a student and I shop mainly at Zara, so what? That doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching runway shows! I'm already curious about what fabulous outfits you're going to show us next haha
love the shoes!
http://kimchicsisters.blogspot.com/2011/02/walking-down-street.html
Tibetan Fireman? Darn, I've built my current wardrobe around Philippino fishmonger!
I do love the runway shots you made during the past weeks. Eventhough I might never have enough funds to buy a "real" clothes from these (fanstatic) designers, they make me dream, there creation inspire me in what I wear on me daily basis... Thank you Scott for sharing these precious shots !
I have to respectfully disagree with any commentators who don't like you posting the runway! I about died over the Pucci show and immediately wanted to do everything in my power to replicate the look on my budget. SUCH fashion inspiration! We're so lucky you share it with us! Keep it coming.
great photos! thanks!!

Well said and put. What I love about visiting your blog/vision is precisely that: Your Vision.
Well said! Speaking as someone who cannot shop in the Dries Van Noten section of Barney's and will not shop in H&M or "mall" stores, I am conditioned to look for style in unexpected places AND get my inspiration from the runway photos!
Well said. I see bits of your teal-and-mustard color combo cropping up here and there, as well.
Gosh, these color schemes are wonderful. Definitely giving me some ideas :)
& for the record, I adore your runway shots.
I'm a poor student^^ and absolutely love the Fendi collection! I'll definitely stuck up on gaudy tights! =)
Honestly, I never expected to copy the runway outfits and I don't see why people would unless if they have tons of money to spare. These pictures, just like the ones I see in Vogue, etc are here to inspire me to find similar pieces/color combinations within my own wardrobe and to influence my future purchases.
And now I MUST find yellow tights. I have a bubble skirt the color of the first jacket (dusty purple?) so it'll be perfect! And thats a color inspiration right there!
I would never have thought that yellow and orange can match so great together!
That's exactly what I think. There's an old saying "who has no dog hunts with a cat"
you need to learn how to do it & you can do it cheaper but with style
http://spot-ninety-two.blogspot.com/
I hate it when people say that fashion excludes people because of money! Style is style is style. Just because Anna Dello Russo can afford head to toe couture, everyone knows that she could walk into a charity shop and put something incredible together. Even for people who can afford designer clothing, runway shows aren't always supposed to be a direct translation. They are a show! They are supposed to be a performance. That's how they should be received. Taking inspiration from the designer's vision is what's important.
Really! And where's the fun in just wearing everything from the runway, really? Yes, runway pieces are beautiful, but sticking to what you're told is trendy isn't very creative. Mixing genres/eras/textures/designers leads to forging your own identity, not just the identity of individual designers.
After all, some of the best looks on here are the most unique, not the most on trend.
I completely agree! I often think that I prefer the fashion of the street to that of the runways as it's more accessible. I think this Fendi collection is inspiring to me, and I think you would be able to find equivalent for smaller budgets.
I don't think lack of money can ever hamper imagination and creativity!
All of it is inspiration (street, runway, construction worker) to open up, be daring, wear what you love, have more fun. yes yes yes
For me the point is one can, and does, see catwalk shots anywhere and everywhere. On top of this seeing so many shots of the same fashion editors and Milan menswear insiders seems to negate what made The Sartorialist so special in the first place. Which was lots of great pictures of stylish, in every sense of the word, members of the general public.
It seems a bit sad if it is just going to become a chicer version of Hello magazine.
Don't listen to the people who don't like/cant relate to your runway shots !
I love the juxtaposition of the fashions on the runways vs. your 'real people' shots - I think the ability to ponder these comparisons is fascinating.
Also, your runway shots are often so much more detailed, personal, visually informative than the photos I see on newspaper sites and style.com
And the fashions as put together by the designers are inspiring.
Please keep them coming !
I hope you'll pay another visit soon to Arnys in Paris. They are fantastic with color for men's clothes, like your Fendi examples.
Well said... take inspiration from all of the gorgeous images surrounding us, in art fashion interior design etc.

I agree with all the comments about inspiration, and I think that I've always looked to high fashion for that. For me, it's the fun of translating the looks I like to my life and my style.
On the Fendi collection - as I suffer through the rest of a Canadian winter, I'm buoyed by the use and combination of colour. As a former New Yorker, I hope this will get some of those bare legged gals into tights already. Those of us who have been wearing them for years can attest to both their stylishness and warmth (not an overrated virtue).
propertension.blogspot.com
I can't afford the items on this runway either, maybe one or two items a year... in a good year! But I find SO much inspiration in these photos. Maybe I can't buy Fendi, but I think I saw some yellow pumps at J.Crew and I colorful tights. Or I have some beautiful fuchsia pumps that would look great with orange tights! And if I see a colorful coat on the runway, I know that again, J. Crew or Macy's or Bloomingdales will have something in my price range very shortly... unless of course I decide that my annual splurge will be on the Fendi coat! To sum, keep up the good work. I love the inspiration!
thanks for your explanation---i agree that the runways are about ideas, not necessarily about having the particular garments pictured. i love the slate-blue coat with mustard-yellow tights!
esme noir (esmenoir.com)
I liked your response. I'm a poor college kid and I buy mostly used clothes but I still love to look at the runways for inspiration.
totally agree. colour blocking can be applied to anywhere you shop, and theres no harm in looking at runways for inspiration :)
sjterrell.blogspot.com
I'm glad to see you explaining your viewpoint rather than bending your knee to the masses. Never water yourself down for the sake of relatability, Scott.
I have to agree with you and so many. I love ALL the pictures for inspiration. I never lament the fact that such runway items will not be part of my wardrobe rather I take great joy in the inspiration they provide. Also, as a sewer, by scouring current and vintage patterns, I can then create my own unique fashion piece (completely unique and custom), no matter the budget.
I'm so glad for this post - as a student, you've listed what I can take from the blog - inspiration!
We aren't born with taste or a sense of style, we develop it over time. Looking at Scott's photographs (all Scott's photographs) allows us to see things we like, things we don't like, get ideas, think a little, dream a little and learn. If we work at it we learn a lot.
Thanks Scott.
Great advice! I had a pair of yellow tights I bought on sale and, as you suggested, Fendi has just taught me a thing or two about how to pair bold colors!
Fashion is really a cycle and not necessarilay a one sided system especially with the appearance of street style blogs nowadays. Fashion shows are meant to inspire, they all go from the catwalk to the magazines, boutiques, down to the high street and local stores.
The lesson here is that runway shows serves as inspiration for regular people and street trends in turn serve as inspiration to designers too as it reflects to the future collection in any given season. So, it is a cycle. Money is not really relevant. It makes the concept of fashion to fashion lovers really dull, boring, and very biased. You dont have to buy a full expensive look that can cost you a whole body or a 10 year savings plan (unless you really REALLY can afford it!).
XOXO from the Philippines! :)
I completely agree with you. To me runway shows are All about inspiration. I could never afford most of those clothes and I don't mind at all, as it's so enjoyable to recreate looks mixing things from different decades, playing with color palettes and shapes, finding treasures under a pile of messy clothes at some vintage store or a mass clothing store. The key is just having fun and fantasy with what we're wearing.
Completely agree with you.
Very well said. i actually love when you post your photos of the various shows. And I LOVE these color combinations that Fendi offered. I am a victim of the monotone (too much black) wardrobe -- not because I don't adore color -- but mostly because black is easy. So these photographs are tremendously inspiring.
Can Fendi get ANY better?
Oh.My.God. Love!
xx
I completely agree. Fashion week is inspirational for any budget.
You're like my Prometheus, except without all that unfortunate liver business. I think your site is the first publication relating to the fashion industry that hasn't projected a you're-probably-hopeless-unless-you're-totally-loaded vibe to me - thank you!!
I'm glad you addressed this issue. I'm a broke college student, so I shop where I can afford to, especially thrift shops and swap meets.I still manage to have fun with fashion, though, because it is a creative outlet- and expensive things done necessarily mean you're creative or "stylish". Besides, runway shots are not about making an exact replica, but rather to take inspiration from like you said.
Great shots-I'm glad you are honest on what shows you like and I always agree with you!
I can't believe that people would say that runways shots don't relate to their everyday life. I love runway, it's so inspirational. And whatever clothes will be sold at a price point that more people can afford will be influenced by this fashion whether you like or understand this or not.
Thank you for posting runway shots, Scott! They are great.
I agree, some people have wrong thoughts about fashion and tehir profession and budget, they make a division about what they do in their lives and what they can desire, dream , use and then buy what they like, and keep thenselves out of the game, just like this: "Oh, I´m a teacher, I cab afford having something as expensive as that, shown in the runaways,´couse it just don´t feet in my profession, I don´t have money for that much.Well, some people can afford the things which are expensive for those whom do the same, it´s not all the teacher, it´s not all the doctors and dentists, or whatelse..It´s not a matter of profession, but indeed is a matter of money!
Love the color combos and heels! And advice.... I definitely love to take little details from fashion and throw it into my style.
i cannot afford many of the items featured by designers, nor do i have access to them, but i throughly enjoy the photos and insight that you add regarding runway shows, etc. because it helps to inspire me in my dress, not to mention, it's just nice to have something so lovely to look at!
These color combinations come straight from my head.
The mainstream fashion week shots don't bother me because they are only a couple times year. However, it would be interesting to see shows from lesser known designers. Maybe some stuff from the Brooklyn fashion week or similar types of shows from around the world. Or even the fashion weeks that take place in southern African countries or India. Places where independent designers are still drawing heavily from the street or their local cultures and heritages. "Emerging" fashion.
I did a quick search while I was typing this comment and found: http://www.afwny.com/fashion/
Africa Fashion Week New York.
Maybe something like that to start.
I like your statement. I'm all about colors, the warmer the tone the more comfortable I feel. However that doesn't stop me from mixing things up while still feeling genuine in something that I wear. Know thy self, and you can see the inspiration on the runway.
I love all of your shots! I have a small, quite useless budget each month.. well basically no budget, and i think that's part of the fun. Fashion can be bought, but the challenge of scavenging through endless racks of vintage or semi-torn clothing can create so many opportunities for creativity.
Thank you for your blog!
Love the boxy totes/bags, the colourful tights and thick-heeled heels! Absolutely adore the vibrant colour combinations - and it's beautiful, how you capture them (the colours) with your lens.
Agree with many comments above. Your lens capture ideas that we can draw from the Runways for our Wardrobes. While there are excellent pictures of runway collections online and in print, yours also tell a story with a point to make. IMHO, that's what makes your pictures relate to us readers who may not buy the Runway collections, but take parts of their ideas and reinvent them in our wardrobes. :) Thanks!
http://le-chic-boutique.blogspot.com
ya know, I have to agree with the commenter(s) that said they can't relate to the runway pix. I really, really love your street photo's for so many reasons. The runway/show pix not so much .... i feel i can just as easily challenge myself to look at fashion in a new way by going to vogue.com, style.com etc. etc.
maybe you feel that there are too many street style photogs out there now ... maybe but nobody does it like you.
jm
thank you, Scott, for your comments about looking at these runway fashions in a different way. I totally agree. and I also agree with the poster(s) who said you should write more text -- your "voice" is terrific -- very real and thoughtful.
just one small asterisk: some of the colors in these runway fashions are really exquisite and hard to duplicate in inexpensive fabrics. as you of all people know, cost plays into not just design and cut, but also fabric -- and part of that is the color. look at that extraordinary blue in the fourth photo of this post!
I don't think I've ever bought a piece of designer clothing that wasn't drastically discounted at a sample sale or on eBay and most of my wardrobe is vintage, JCrew with the occasional A.P.C. splurge thrown in....and for all that I know I am still privileged to have money to spend on clothes. Still, I adore the runway shots for exactly the reasons you suggest! Inspiration! And not always to buy something new, but to remix, shop your closet, restyle what you already have! Seeing the latest Dries only confirmed my love for sock and sandals and made me want to go get a pair of striped socks! That's the take-away. I could never afford DVH new but, whatever...it's beautiful and I can relate to THAT! Thanks, Sart, for being in the front row and bringing it! Hopefully, you'll spot me in my striped socks and sandals, street stylin' it.....
Love new color combinations.

I wore an outfit that looked like this back in 1969. Wish I had saved a photo.
Comparing this show to Prada's collection, I find this to be much more relatable to every day life in the cut of the clothes, texture, and color pairings. Any modern stylish woman (regardless of affordability) should be able to draw from this collection, and do it successfully.
Looking at Prada's, the color combos do not seem original, the prints are uninspired.. Fendi gives a much needed vitality to Milan Fashion Week.
i completly agree with what u wrote, i think runway shots are very inspiring :D
I disagree with all the negative comments you were talking about. I think what we have seen on the runway is so accessible. You can always re-create it more cheaply. It's all about inspiration.

The pops of color throughout the show are so bold and strikingly fierce—lovely work, Fendi. I wonder though, why must models look gaunt and devoid of emotion? is it to contrast the lively burst of color? What about the undeniable and universal beauty of joy...
Sart,
You make a great point, and I wish that more people fully comprehend the fact that fashion isn't limited to aristocrats. We all wear clothes, and basically everyone has had at least some fun in putting together an outfit. Obviously, only a minuscule percentage of the world's population can afford the clothes coming down these runways, but the fact is that we all participate in fashion--to some extent--every.single.day.
I think the comments you refer to come from many of those who have followed your blog since its near inception. As this blog has transitioned from being your side hobby to a full-time career, your relationship to the rest of the industry has changed: initially, you were just some unknown random dude taking photos of interesting-ly dressed people on the street, and now you're known, by common folk as well as fashion editors around the world, as Scott Schuman: founder of (probably) the most popular fashion blog on the Internet. I mean, don't let it go to your head, but you're now a Fashion Insider. You get invites to shows, because you have a large audience of readers, just like magazine editors.
I think this is what is alienating the readers you allude to. You begin by solely posting pictures of random people on the street. Then, you begin to mix in some pictures of people who are somewhat big in the industry. Now, these readers are thinking, The Sartorialist--internet street style photographer extraordinaire--has begun posting pictures of runway shows, too?!
Personally speaking, I enjoy the reportage of fashion events from your new "insider's perspective"--both your up-close photos of the runway shows as well as your take on current industry news. I like that you still post many street-style photos, and that we are able to see both "high fashion" and "street fashion" on this blog. Isn't the mixing of high and low "in" right now, anyways? :-P
However, others may perceive this as having a bit of an identity crisis. I think you need to ask yourself: (1) How do you reconcile your street style roots with the fact that you are now sitting inside these shows with the fashion elite?; (2) What makes you and your blog different? Right now, it seems that you're sort of in the middle of these two worlds, and it'll be interesting to see where this blog goes.... ;-)
xo,
P
Not only do I not have the money ... I have hips! Who cares? I like seeing what might be available to me in some rendition come fall. And the Fendi collection took me back to Yves St Laurent circa '84 (and I could be way off on that). But the girls at the YSL shop in the mall I worked at knew I worked at the bookshop and was broker than broke. They still welcomed me into their shop and my friends and I were able to look at what would otherwise be totally unavailable to us - and be inspired.
Great post-- if people think the shots you post are about/for only those who can afford designer clothing, they are missing the point. I love the runway shots-- I use them exactly as you suggest: to find aspects of the looks that I can work into my wardrobe at my budget level and in ways that suit my body and lifestyle. The Fendi shots, for example: LOVE the tights and shoes! I will certainly be sporting similar when fall rolls around!
RIGHT ON, SCOTT.
Well said!! I could not agree more. That's what fashion's all about!
its not about whether you can buy the clothes or not... its about gaining inspiration....
look at the fabric/texture combinations, the swag, the proportion, the way the items are styled... etc etc
pics are taken to inspire....
M A R L O
The gold tights mixed with the blue tones of the jacket and what I am assuming is a skirt hint at the "Blue London" sequence a few days ago.
Interesting that you'd have to provide that direction to your audience. Afterall, the everyday people that populate your pages are wearing inspired versions of what is seen on the runway and then the whole cycle starts all over on itself. Isn't that why we love this blog!?!
Touche. You said it perfectly. Come on people, use the collections as inspiration and research and you are TOTALLY correct in saying it is not about affordability. It's about shapes, colours and historical referencing. I wear vintage only, however, will research every show and sites like yours to turn the vintage into a modern look. THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE and don't be negative. These shows are full of incredible work and conceptualisation.
It's hard to believe that anyone sees fashion in a non-relatable way...of course, some of the more avant-garde pieces, shoes, and accessories are hard to come by for the middle-class fashion aficionados, but I never look at runway without the intention of gaining inspiration. In fact, I do it strictly for analytical purposes - to absorb the design qualities of specific designers (proportion, color/print schemes, textures, etc.) - rather than admiring pieces I can't afford - to look at it in that close-minded perspective would be downright torturous, I would think.
So yes, I totally agree with you Scott. I wish a lot more people could see fashion beyond a narcissistic, luxury-based standpoint and instead use at as a medium of inspiration. A lot more people would be enlightened if they saw this way instead of turning against it simply because of their lack of funds.
Not to say that I don't know where they're coming from - I'm a seventeen-year-old girl and I have no source of income, nor do I mooch off my parents in order to purchase clothing. It's difficult, considering I have an almost impossible penchant for quality that can't be gained by shopping at chain clothing stores found at the mall (Forever 21, for example), and I respect designers too much to purchase borderline copyright infringement clothing from those stores. I've cured that by saving up the little money I manage to come buy for one - or two - designer pieces each season. For the rest of my wardrobe, I go to stores like Zara and Topshop who instill designer quality in most of their clothing, whilst keeping the budgets of their consumers in mind. It's evident that those stores definitely take a lot of their cues from the runway itself, and can at times resemble the real thing to an unadmirable level, but for the most part, they're clothing manages to stay well-made and unique in their design. And of course, there's always, always vintage, which enables me to "have fun with fashion" without breaking the bank.
In the end, it's about using fashion to cater to our own styles. Though we may never be able to afford the outfits of Ms. Anna Dello Russo - let me rephrase that - even if we could afford ADR's clothing, I guarantee we would wear them in accordance to our own personality. Even if Anna wears looks straight off the runway, her outfits are always uniquely Anna. And that's really the point of fashion, I think, a mode of expression - NOT a medium exclusive to the rich.
So I hope everyone takes your advice to heart, and realize that even high fashion can be channeled by any class, as long as you see it as a a source of inspiration to cultivate your own style.
Given the common critiques of high fashion runway shows, there is definitely a value in the drama and imagination encapsulated within it. Instead of thinking of fashion as the fissure between classes, perhaps we can think of fashion as a form of self expression/liberation--not just a trend but a representation of who we are and where we are.
I'm so happy to see thick bright tights are sticking around for another season, they bring a world of options to a winter wardrobe. This is such a unique and inspiring collection, though some of the colour stories are a little over-the-top for my personal taste...
I always enjoy doing as you suggest with runway shots. But, I do have to say as someone who has followed fashion for decades (yes, I am in LATE middle age) the pricing today is UNbelievable. I just looked through the new Barneys catalog. I used to be able to afford a few pieces from big-name designers each season. Even though I make much more now I can afford much less and I wouldn't even consider spending $18,950 on one piece of clothing (D&G)--it's obscene! I think I am ready to see the Academy Award-winning documentary called "Inside Job". I predict a revolution within my lifetime.
I loved these pics they give me inspiration and great ideas. thanks
having commentary such as what you provided with this post is what REALLY helps me relate to these photos; please keep telling us things to look for, because it is SO helpful.
I LOVE your runway shots. Brava! I can easily relate to the colours, cut, shape and the designer's influences. It's up to us all to take inspiration from these leaders and not just to take the clothes 'literaly'.
On a practical note: Do you use a tripod while taking the runway shots? Technically they look brilliant.
Ciao, L. x x
i believe that the fashion week posts are relevant to your blog and to viewers. no matter how much money is able to be spent seeing these lines give myself ideas on how to transform my wardrobe. and being a college student, i feel that taking inspiration from these photos are the perfect way to create a new look. no matter how much i am able to spend. thank you for all that you do!!
I completely agree. I'm a graphic designer and just recently started following your blog of fashion photos—specifically the runway ones. They are such a great source of inspiration for my designs.
'Don't let your funds keep you from having fun with fashion.'
Well said Mr Sartorialist!
I really liked these Milan shows in comparison to London and New York. These small, vivacious pops of color made me giggle and nostalgic for my sega days.
I love the runway shots - keep them coming! As a creative person involved in film, I love seeing the colors and the shapes in these photos for visual inspiration - even if I'm not going to go and buy it all myself!
These fashions are all beautiful works of art, and I like your taste in assessing which runway photos to put up on your blog. You don't put up a million photos of every single look in the shows, and yet at the same time, you put up a large and interesting assortment that makes us feel like we are getting a good sense of the collections. Keep up the great work!

that comment was really helpful. and kind. i'd been secretly thinking that runway stuff is ultimately insider stuff, because it's inaccessible financially. but it was a nice stimulation to think about these differently.
I have a budget of $50 a month for clothing. But, when I'm at the thrift store I look for stuff that is similar to runway trends. Right now I'm grabbing everything 70's. I think the runway is for inspiration. I don't need expensive labels. But, I love looking at them. If you really love something try to find something with the same feel. It's not as hard as people think. Right now I'm think how I can buy some orange leggings from We Love Colors like the ones in the post for under $20.

I love Fendi's sophistication. Its beautiful.

Oh my God !!!! What an amazing set of colours !!! I'm on it totally !!!! I'm about to run for orange and yelow tights right now :) the rest of wardrobe I already have got !!! Great pics BTW, thank you for inspiration :)!!!
I love this color blocking technique. Can't wait to try it myself.

Go to Zara right now and everything for spring/summer is big, bold and bright! One could easily mimic this looks! Want the bright pantyhose? American apparel has dozens of colours!
Great point Scott! Rock on! :) Fashion isn't all about expensive pieces or out of the box construction.
Just continue to show us the runway-news! I love to see the colours and it gives a lot of inspiration for my own wardrobe. Those Fendi-shoes are great!
Thank you for showing us all this beauty.
Marjolijn
You are so right! Couldn't agree more with you on that point. Can't afford Dries Van Noten but his combinations of colour have always been an inspiration to me.
Another illustration with your great shots.
Brigitte
And, as I may add, clothes and accessories shown on the runway will be in H&M stores around the world in 3-6 weeks... ;-)
I've had no qualms with fashion's practicality in the past but my
honest my first reaction to the top look, before reading your blerp was "wow, I could actually wear that!" I didn't think a 'simple' coat cut it for fall fashion these days.
Awesome looks! Time to get some ribbed yellow tights, cheyeahh!

Personally, I love your runway photos so please keep them coming! :)
The colour combination is great!

I love your blog so much and part of that is because I can't relate to the fashion! I love seeing the runway shots of gorgeous clothes, and the chic, beautiful people you shoot in New York and Europe. It is a world away from my life, but it inspires me! I know I will probably never be able to afford top end designers but I can still be stylish and take inspiration from your photos. Thanks for your great work =)
Lauren
You are smart. :)
I totally agree with Scot. There is no way I could afford any of these fabulous clothes, but the blog is not about buying expensive material but to inspire us, identify our style, and get out there for a treasure hunt! Plus there are more and more shops selling second hand brands, thats where I managed to buy my fabulous marni yellow winter coat! Yeih! Keep posting Scot, your blog is invogorating, and helps me start my day with a smile!
I completely agree! The way I see it, runaway fashion is about inspiring us to think differently about the clothes that we choose and the way we put them together. And this I believe is applicable to any clothing store..
Actually, your blog has inspired me to just that, Scott. I never connected with the fashion runways until I saw your blog filled with fashion in the street. Just a couple of weeks ago, I saw that girl in the red tights, and I knew I had to make it happen. With a few pieces I owned already, along with some new red H&M tights and a black and tan striped dress, I made an outfit inspired by that photo. I got so many compliments that day for my fashion daring!
I'm looking at that photo with the yellow tights and greenish-blue skirt (the color story you pointed out last week) and my mind is going again....
Les couleurs des collants me ravissent.
Totally agree with you, fashion is about creativity ans inspiration.
Sometimes I see some girls in gthe street wearing amazing outfits which are usually coming from vintage stores or Zara! and sometimes you see some celebrities having access to any designer clothes they want but lacking in total imagination! Style has nothing to do with money...
I couldn't agree more. I can not and will never be able to afford to dress head to toe in runway - but I use your shots as inspiration for how I put together a combo of vintage, local designers, and high street brands. Hopefully I get it right most of the time!
Here's an oxymoron - "literal-minded fashionista". Fashion is about fantasy, aesthetics as well as about adaptation. To your own body and circumstances. I am about to graduate as a docent at my local art museum and not being able to afford those art pieces on display never put me off this artistic journey that's been an absolute blast. Don't stop having fun looking at designers' impressions of how you should dress in the now. Then ADAPT. Keep such posts coming, Sart!
i love this fendi collection. nice shapes, coats & tights, colours, fabrics, and yes: elegant, interesting hemlines...
affordable, wearable, etc.: it is all very relative, isn't it. both your runway photo's and streetstyle pictures occasionally show outfits that inspire me personally - if only to make an effort, but most of the time i just like to look at what others wear and get away with... see what's up, basically, and that is fun too. so many thanks for all of that.
Beautiful colours!! And I agree with you - use it as inspiration! Remember, you can be really successful in budget shopping when inspired by the designers!
- and do not underestimate colour on stalkings and nail polish :)
Beautiful show. I am one of the people who can afford only 2-3 designer pieces per year. However, the rest that I cannot afford, I use as inspiration, that's what fashion shows should be about and I believe the mastery is in combining designer clothes with vintage or less expensive clothing.
Love the thin line of yellow/orange separating the bodice and skirt sections of this dress...and the tights worn in the whole collection are AMAZING!!!
I completely agree with you. I cannot say that I bought a new wardrobe of clothes since I started reading your blog, but I certainly started to dress differently - that is, with the stuff I already have. This blog is meant to inspire - and though I love to look at the "caught in the street" photos, I think that I should be inspired also by fancy designer shows, by someone who really knows what he/she is doing.
I would like to say thank you, you and your blog have made me more open-minded about fashion, but about a lot of other things too. And I stopped being afraid to mix and play with clothes, and that certainly helped my fashion self-esteem.
Almost any garment can be worn in a great, stylish way. It depends on your attitude (how) rather than the garment itslef (what).
Strange that you would elicit such comments. The juxtaposition of street and runway is what makes it interesting. Sort of art gallery vs. grafitti, where the boundaries are blurred. In Sweden there is a debate about the young women with fashion blogs who have fans that slavishly follow all the tips (isn't this a sign of insecurity? or perhaps just a way of experimenting until you dare to find and follow your own style). Interestingly enough, at least one blogger has been accused of being very rude and for anti-semitic comments: let's hope it's not a trend.
A leading morning paper's fashion blogger, stationed in NY, has spent a year on the wagon, as it were, with no clothes purchases at all, not even stockings, for a year.
I fully agree with the idea of finding inspiration & buying elsewhere but I somehow doubt that Zara will sell much colour: they never have. Why would they start now?
http://davidikus.blogspot.com/
Those colours are just amazing. The sophistication of the brights with the neutrals and the confident mixing of yellow and orange, brown and grey leave me gasping with excitement especially since I have all those colours in my wardrobe already!
I'm dismayed by the cocoon coats though here and at Marni. No good over flesh.
Those colours are just amazing!!!!!!! GREAT PICTURES!!!!!
The point of runway is inspiration. The designers are architects for what we will buy/wear in the next few years. Though I can not afford runway, I have an immense respect for the influential work of the designers. The trickle down effect will have their ideas in an affordable American Apparel or Anthropolgie near me soon, I am sure of it.
"Don't let the lack of funds keep you from having fun with fashion."
- definitely a quote to remember
Agree. Love your pics.
http://www.wangtaitai.com/
I agree with you. I don't think money has anything to do with genuine appreciation and admiration of fashion. I cannot afford much by way of runway styles but it is pretty fun to replicate some of these looks on my budget. Keep the shots coming. I love them.
www.greeneggsandglam.blogspot.com
I totally agree. We may not have the money to buy designer clothes, I for certain dress high steet fashion, but my inspiration always comes from the true fashion makers.
Ada
Well said. My life and shopping ability may have changed, but I still always look to the runway (and now your blog)for inspiration and creative ideas.
love the color blocks.
I agree with you. Having recently finished Patti Smith's "Just Kids," she describes a lot of the clothing choices, search through thrift stores, and talismanic jewelry that Mapplethorpe made for her and himself. They had no money. There is a scene where she found .50 cents in central park and bought a boiled egg to eat, how luxurious that was. Now we all look back at those photographs and their clothes were iconic, poetic expressions of their journey.
Your runway images are stunning!
I love the runway shots for the reasons you stated-color schemes and construction of the outfits. As an artist, the color schemes are inspiring.
Keep them coming!
The Fendi color combinations are so invigorating; orange tights, yellow shoes and a petrol blue bag. Riviting! Some runway shots feel cold to me, those on the street are so much more alive, but there's inspiration to be gained wherever you can feel a spark.
i agree, too. there are plenty of clothes stores that offer similar garments to designer clothes. your images especially, always help with ideas and influence what i should by that could make me feel like a model and it doesn't have to cost $$$.
i also love these tights! seriously, i want them in every color!
Thank you for your comments on fashion and funds. I REALLY appreciate them...I'm midwestern, middle class, a teacher, but this in NO WAY inhibits my sense of worth or fashion. :) I shop cheaply and dig through the vintage and thrift stores, and though I have been known to drop a Benjamin on a pair of shoes (which is a A LOT for me), I don't feel restricted, challenged, or uncomfortable that I can't walk the streets in Fendi, Dior, or Gucci. Perhaps some may think it low class, maybe even disgusting, but that does not bother me. I look to your blog and other blogs for inspiration and when I can use one of your shots as my Muse and put together an outfit for under $20, I walk a bit taller with a spring in my step. I'm enlivened by the challenge to find inspiration in the expensive but to live wholly and completely in the reality of my station. Again, thank you for your comment. Thank you for your inspiration and thank you for the permission and encouragement to be ourselves...beauty walking the streets on a dime.
Best to you.
Sarah Marie
Never, ever let lack of money stop you from looking great. My moto is expensive shoes and cheap clothes work SO well but cheap shoes never really work with expensive clothes unless it's ballet pumps or espadrilles of some kind of trainer xxx
I agree with you Sart. Granted, I do prefer the street shots over the runway ones but personally, they do help me get a look at what new directions fashion can take. It's almost like going back to your med school textbook for a quick review when you're stuck with a medical question you can't solve.
I could not agree with you more. That is exactly what (for me) fashion is all about. A play, a journey. You can imagine how will you wear this or that, how you will combine it. And that is exactly the idea that I have written in my blog some days ago, a recent blog not related with fashion but with the power of music, literature and why not (fashion) to make you dream. That is why I believe your pictures are something more than patterns and colours.
I agree ... I love seeing the runway shots because they give you an amazing perspective into one person's overall creative concept. It's fantastic to see one photo after the other, all from the same collection.
It actually gives a MUCH better perspective into these designers' imagination than when you see them in a fashion magazine, where the designers' concepts are diluted by the magazine editors' concepts.
I'm an artist who can't afford any new clothes this year. Not even sales. But looking at the shows inspires me to try new combinations of what I have, like KiSt is doing. I'm not kidding, it's like having a new wardrobe, with a challenge to the visual imagination. - Jean
If you are concerned with price, you are not embracing the real art of fashion. Fashion is about making it work whether you have money or not. I personally do not like to buy cheap clothing because I know that it took little to no effort to design it and produce it. It is just a means of making money and running the business. With that said, I also do not have a huge income that supports that beautiful works of art that adorn the runways. I have simply resorted to making a lot of my own clothes. Not only can I make them to fit me perfectly, but I can also incooperate my interpertation of the trend and make it my own. I don't use patterns, and I hand sew everything, therefore it does not cost me alot of money. And it really feels like an accomplishment to create something new and fresh.
These runway pictures are a great tool as far as inspiration. Keep them coming!
I find what people have said to be the complete opposite!! Between you and garance i get the most inspiration in fashion. I aspire to be a fashion designer and I feel as though you choose the best outfits to display. They seem ready to wear and easy to find the basic pieces as a more affordable price. So thank you! You have a huge fan following daily, hourly and whenever possible!!

I live in a town where fashion is not that big of a deal, but money is, (depending on what area you live in). I dont like to spend alot of money on clothes and I am more of a designer vintage shopped then going to LA to shop at boutiques and Nordstoms. I just LOVE runway shots! They do, like you said, help yourself as your own stylist learn how to combine colors, textures, hair ext with each. Sometimes even though your colors may match the way they are combined, top, bottoms, shoes, accessories really matter in making an outfit come together. Some people who love fashion sometimes dont use the more creative visualization part of their brain that can create great pieces. Most of my favorite outfits I get from runway shots because of the great mix of colors and textures, its all just so beautiful.
Love the blog and your great photography!! Its just all so inspiring. Great work!!
Megan
I am glad you made your comments regarding those who could not relate to your runway shots. I am a 52 year old, 5' 10" lady (used to be a size 6, now more like a 14 to 16) with a middle class pocketbook. Your shots (both on the street and runway) provide me with one more resource for putting things together that I already own. I always start by shopping my own closet for ways to use the season's trends, then pick and choose pieces to buy to freshen things up or fill in the gaps. Keep doing what you are doing. It's great!
I for one shall be buying direct from the collection it's totally wearable and utterly gorgeous!
I agree wholeheartedly! I recently MADE an outfit with a pair of mustard colored Kate Spade tights. The runway can totally inspire you if you know how to look at it!
Hello Scott: I would like to start by saying that I truly enjoy your blog! I have wanted to compliment you on your perspective and photos many times but never have. This time I feel really compelled to do so. As a sociologist and lover of fashion, I have always enjoyed your site. You offer every side of the spectrum. Both the "insider" and "outsider" point of view. You are very "classy" in your response to the readers who were not connecting with the runway photos. Instead of responding defensively you offer an intimate and helpful way to make it relatable. Fashion is art and art is life. Fashion comes from the streets and onto the runway and back, its an ongoing cycle.
I support every word. Love love love the runway shots!
So true!
Come on, people. Runway shows are simply a source of inspiration for 99.9% of us, specially when it comes to haute couture. Most people will not go out and buy a ruby-encrusted gown or some humongous feathery hat to use on a daily basis. That is ridiculous. Watch the shows, study the pictures however you can and incorporate the clues into your wardrobe. The idea is to have fun and explore your creativity, not to feel sorry about one's bank account. No one is saying you have to buy colored tights at Fendi. Lord & Taylor, Walmart and Lojas Americanas (to name a few) all carry a great selection of them. Moreover, one can find gently used designer items at thrift stores. You can also learn to sew and make your own stuff. And so on. Fashion lovers tend to be a very creative and resourceful bunch, so use the clues to your advantage and have fun with it!
I cannot afford a Picasso or a Van Gogh, but I love watching them.
Great post! I've enjoyed your Fashion Week postings, and I love trying to incorporate some of the looks from the runway into my own wardrobe (cheaper versions, of course!). Love the Fendi color combinations!!! Such rich hues...
Well said Scott.
Interestingly, I couldn't really relate to or be inspired by the images of the very same outfits on style.com, but there's something about the movement/angles/lighting in your shots that made a huge impression on me.
I might never afford couture but your photos deliver the essence of it-- the color, the richness, the importance of impeccable construction. And that's the inspiration. I LOVED your runway photos, particularly Gucci and Jil Sander... don't stop posting them!
..oops meant Jonathan Saunders of course. :)
please never ever stop posting from those gorgeous runway shows. while i'm not one of those high net worth indivuduals who can afford to order total looks from the runway, the shots you provide often not only inspire me to make changes in my personal style, but encourage me to take a second look at the collections presented by some houses i don't even know.
and when i do get my hand on a little bit of money to splurge on myself, you better believe that i go out and purchase things i've previously seen photographed amazingly on this very blog.
totally agree with your comment - its not about the $$$ that you can spend its about taking these shows as inspiration and using what you have/what you can afford. thanks so much for the wonderful images. colour rocks!! as do the socks from Dries
Yes Scott, i understand your point! with some friends we have discussed about how pointless could be seeing those pictures in you blog... however, I follow catwalks, but i rather prefer style.com for that... no offence!
thanks
its not lack of fund the problem, its spending your money on superficial stuff like new season clothes!!
