This is definitely the East Coast of America style: an old shetland sweater with patches, original Levis, clogs, an old ring. Cozy prep school gear. Nothing trendy, nothing ridiculous. No bondage shoes, no transparent anything, no bag that cost thousands.

This is the way artists dress: a warm sweater, Levis, comfy shoes or boots, old jewelry that carries a spirit of its own.I bet a lot of your readers will comment that there's nothing special going on here. That's the beauty of it.

I agree with the commenter about East coast style. I live right on the Eastern coast and almost everybody in the city dresses like this; I love it, because it's real and approachable; she doesn't look like a human replica of Barbie with wads of cash to blow.

haha, those shoes are part of the waitress, nurse, chef (and portland, oregon) uniform. Great to see them here, maybe I won't be so embarrassed to wear them. I have the exact same pair.

Anonymous fashionsdirtylaundry said ... (12:28 PM) :

But it all comes down to the socks! Great!

Blogger 82Brute said ... (12:29 PM) :

Yeah, this is pretty much my daily uniform, including the big ring, too. I don't do the shoes, though. I had a pair once and felt like I was wearing the boxes. It's really hard to walk gracefully in them. What my eyeballs are enjoying about this as a photo are the different shades of blue and the beautiful architectural details against the softness of the fabrics. Very nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

Please somebody tell a European women which brand are these shoes and can I buy them in internet? Thanks!I love this no-nonsense, still attractive and feminine style.

Anonymous sunny said ... (1:28 PM) :

Loving the colors of the outfit, the ring (of course!) and I am a fan of the shoes. I wear similar ones almost daily to work - with jeans or with a skirt/sweater/tights.

I normally read this blog via Google Reader but had to visit the original post to see if there would be comments on the shoes. I figure you either love 'em or hate 'em.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:31 PM) :

I am so anti-clogs. However, I am pro-working people. You do what you got to do. This person definitely makes the most of it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:32 PM) :

the sweater is from APC

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:32 PM) :

The sweaters are APC, where she works and is sitting in front of. I suspect the scarf, jeans and socks are APC too.

Anonymous Best of Beehive said ... (1:34 PM) :

Chocolate colored scarf. Great accessory. But I think it wouldn't make as big an impact if the background were different. So kudos to the photographer.

Anonymous style mag said ... (2:32 PM) :

Casual and comfortable with a twist of style. Like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:53 PM) :

I love seeing Danskos on this site! This is exactly how I dress (in the winter in Northern California!) when I'm not in the office, although I prefer clogs without the exposed staples. That's an important detail. Sanita (which I think is owned by Danskos) makes some. I think you have to look with more creative eyes to see that this look can be very sexy.

Blogger The Khaki Crusader said ... (3:00 PM) :

i love my dansko shoes, too (aka the most comfy, practical, go-to shoes ever made). she looks comfortable and stylish!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:28 PM) :

The classic East Coast preppy-granola hybrid always works when it's worn without pretense--and the shoes are just right for eliminating any pretension.

Winter in NY this year is meh! Very uninspiring. Where are all the beautiful coats/bags/shoes we saw last year?

Blogger Bronwyn said ... (3:35 PM) :

I love the patch and the scarf. She's also wearing surgery shoes...
(You know, the clogs that won't let a scalpel go through them, that are easy to slip on, and comfortable for standing for five hours?)

Blogger KhingKOBRA said ... (3:38 PM) :

The patches remind me of a sportcoat I saw a guy wearing in Baltimore once, they were shaped like skulls but done in a very clean, simple design. Either way, very classic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:52 PM) :

I love Danskos. I wear them every day. For those who don't like them, just wear them once. Then see if you wear anything else after that. :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:38 PM) :

i love this. this is my fashion!!! and it's real.
gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:42 PM) :

Agreee with 82 Brute, this picture comes tohgether because of the blue context, i.e. background storefront, painted blue standpipe.....and even the bluish cast to the concrete sidewalk. Without the backdrop, the outfit is utilitarian and unremarkable.....and nothing wrong with dat. BTW, Dansko Professionals rule.

Anonymous mabelmabel said ... (4:50 PM) :

NOTHING cooler than the original "stapled professional" Dansco clog: anchors any look--am I right?

Love her eye.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:16 PM) :

I got a little excited when I saw this pic. Immediately loved the the blue then I saw the shoes! I started my Dansko obsession a few years ago and am always asked what they are. A great shoe, most comfortable ever and look very cool if you pick the right one. They are not just nursing shoes. The hard part is finding the entire range. Can't buy them in Australia so I hunt them down online.

So great to see this amid your long roll of designer shots! Merry Christmas xxx

It almost sounds like some people are defending those shoes, which suggests that they are aware of the hard truth. To them, I say, it's okay to wear comfortable shoes, but lets not delude ourselves about their being attractive.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:41 PM) :

One defense for the shoes is that there was a sale going on at APC Soho which was probably when this pic was taken. Their staffers stand and walk and climb stairs all day. You really do want some comfortable shoes to wear. For those who haven't been, the APC Soho store is gorgeous and and their staff is extremely friendly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:14 PM) :

The building's color facade complements nicely with her wardrobe colors. (Clogs are ugly, though. They always look cheap, no matter how expensive.)

Another Danskos fan here. I even have an old pair made with what I consider faux pony hide. I've worn Danskos for years; they're perfect for my feet. As a land architect, I walk a lot on different kinds of ground and concrete and the Danskos can take it.

I did wear a pair in Italy during a month long trip. I think I was the only one in the whole country wearing them. Too bad. Anyway, to the european woman who wanted to know where to get them, I think Danskos are manufactured in Germany, but am not positive about that. In any case, they are available online. You also can probably get them in walking shoe type stores.

My own style is often like the woman in the photo.
I had to laugh re the posters from northern california and oregon - I don't live there now, but I have lived there. Danskoville...

I started to scroll down, unveiling a nice everyday italian style look and then... I saw the shoes. Don't tell me the 'comfy' story people. If you want to go comfy, pick loafers, brogues, allstars, whatever...just not clogs. Thank you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 PM) :

the sweater is great i love the way she wore these socks, but the shoes... not sure about them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 PM) :

Those who pick on one particular item totally miss the point. This woman, her calmness, the details are stunning. The rest, like her shoes, is the foundation. As a straight guy (whether that matters here or not), I'm nevertheless inspired by this shot. She's cool. Those stuck on one item or another aren't.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:31 PM) :

It was very funny to see comments about what brand the shoes are. Danskos. They are the shoes people wear when they are on their feet doing work like teaching, nursing, and other helping type occupations where sitting down is a luxury. So for those of you getting all uppity about someone wearing something not so trendy or stylish I say...walk in our feet and see if you don't change your mind! In my eyes she looks absolutely perfect.

I have to agree with "Anonymous" that YES, stylish & comfy chicks agree... love that you shot a girl in Danskos. Even if it was for her ring & elbow patches... I LOVE these shoes and consider myself a fairly stylish girl. :) So consider my joy when I see them on your blog! Well done! Well done!

I like that. That would actually even a possibility for me because it looks easy.

This looks like it could've been shot here in Huntington Beach, CA. It's so casual and laid back.

Love the Danskos and that is the first thing I noticed. I almost wear them exclusively...I am not a chef, a nurse or other. I am a designer! Been wearing them for years, so comfy. for those who don't like them, just wait...you'll be wearing them in a few....very on trend.

Anonymous paulee said ... (3:29 PM) :

dayum thats nice. i feel like i have a similar sweater

Blogger Lisa said ... (3:53 PM) :

Love 'em or hate 'em, Danskos CAN be ROCKED! Cool socks, no socks, tights and a teeny skirt, jeans with just the right length (like hers)or rolled...Some of us just can't wear stilettos (in my case, a slight gait disability). Rock what you've got!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:23 PM) :

Love the scarf.

Love it! Clogs are my best friend even when everyone raises an eyebrow at Dansko clogs. They are wonderful!
I don't even consider them a guilty pleasure because they are just superb.

Of course, the rest of the details with this outfit are lovely as well :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 PM) :

old money. except that the jeans are not boot cut. great shot. Nice hair.

Anonymous jdit said ... (6:15 PM) :

The few colors take command of this shot: engaging blues, including the sizable ring; browns in the scarf, and the brown and gold in the window's reflection, and the purple of the socks.

The little tuft of light blue of the shirt peeking out from under the sweater and the print on the window. Gee Scott - did you do all of that on purpose? Even if so it just doesn't matter - it is the playful presentation of the hues and shades that make it a wonderful ride for the eye.

even the detailed stitching on the jeans is great .. and Danskos are so comfortable, you can't hate..

it's so lovely to see the clogs done well!

Blogger Tessa said ... (1:32 AM) :

Wow, so nice to see so many people loving the Danskos! I have worn them for ten years as a chef and am always mortified if I have to go anywhere before/after working and am just too lazy to bring other shoes (or even just to change my shoes...). They are truly great for your feet, though, and for 15-plus hour days the only thing that one can wear. When all kinds of clogs started getting trendy a few years ago I thought how funny it was. I guess I don't have to feel like such a dirtbag wearing them outside of the kitchen. Hehe. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

To me she comes across as comfortable, poised and assured. I agree that she looks like a artist, or at least many working artists that I've known.

And seriously, what's so unattractive about clogs? They don't turn her feet into overt sex objects, true, but that's okay. There are way uglier shoes out there. Feet slammed forward in skyscraper heels -- flesh bulging through straps and chains, toes scrunched or poking over the edge of the sole, bunions and hammertoes -- are just as unattractive to others.

Her style decisions have made her hands a visual focal point. If you're turned on by strong, capable-looking, creative women (because that ring is a dead giveaway -- it takes a definite personality to casually rock something that large) you'd notice them, and her.

I think everything she has on was chosen deliberately, including the shoes. It pleases me to imagine she's aware of the history of the city where she lives (once "New Amsterdam") and is offering up a sly little nod to Dutch culture.

To me, it's style that doesn't get in the way of living.

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:44 PM) :

What intrigues me the most is she's definately doing the minimalist approach, her center pieces are the purple socks and her brown scarf, including the slip on shoes, overall its a good look, for doing day to day things.

Did I already tell you to come to Oakland, California to take pictures of high schoolers? Well if Oakland is out of your way you could just take pictures of high schoolers in general. Im curious to see what interesting things people my own age are doing with their clothes.
