Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:29 AM) :

it might be a back pedal brake bike. cute hat and cute girl (save for the cigarette)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:32 AM) :

it's a back peddle bike, peddle the opposite direction to stope

Anonymous Vanessa said ... (10:37 AM) :

It's a fixed wheel bike, they don't have breaks, instead you pedal backwards to stop.

Other than that- sweet look!

Anonymous Yajaira said ... (10:38 AM) :

I didn't know if it was a she or a he..
Nice Tattoo..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:44 AM) :

looks like not a lot of stylish people that day.

Blogger Jessie said ... (10:47 AM) :

The bike is a fixie. That's why no brakes. Also no gears. It is not back peddle brakes though. Fixies were used for training but started gaining popularity because they were inexpensive. Usually they are very uniquely decorated by their riders. The speed is completely controlled by peddling, even slowing down. No costing on this bike.

.... Great pic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 AM) :

There'd better be a helmet in that bag.

Sure, you might look like a dork, but your brains on a curb isn't very cool, either.

Blogger Angel said ... (10:58 AM) :

Some will have 1 break on their bike, but most don't. You have to force the bike to stop, its hard to explain. Fixies are cool but they are a trend among the kiddies and young messenger's. Track bikes and the city are about 'WHEN' you'll be hit by a car.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:32 PM) :

It's a track bike - track bikes don't have any brakes. It's what cyclists ride in the city. And how your knees get worn out. But they sure do look cool.

It's the little extras in this picture-- the tattoos, the rings, the necklace around her neck, the pink bike, yellow hat. Otherwise, you're just not into the bike culture.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:08 PM) :

hope she doesn't lock that bike on the street in nyc....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:04 PM) :

It cracks me up that everyone is pointing out what's impractical about this woman: biking in tight jeans, not wearing a helmet, trendy dangerous bike, not much clothing on a cold day etc. That's what fashion's all about folks. My fellow fans, almost every fashionable woman portrayed on this blog (especially the Italians) are completely impractical! Wearing high heels, a short skirt and carrying a tiny little purse in a cold city is equally ludicrous from a safety, practicality and maneuverability point of view! And yet we applaud the stiletto-glad woman skittering about on European cobble-stones. Personally, I'm thrilled to see a woman who isn't all Barbie-hair and glamor for a change. She doesn't give a rat's behind if you don't dig her style, because there are plenty of fellow NYC bike girls who think she looks beautiful. Bike on baby!!

Blogger Alex said ... (12:13 AM) :

sweet thigh, la la.
i want skin jeans like that and the legs to put them into.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:07 AM) :

nobody heard of fixed gear? looks like a Tallahassee girl in NY placement, down to the spoke card. Beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:40 AM) :

She looks sharp and strong and, as my mom would put it, "full of the devil" ... lovely!

@ Eryl--that's one of the sweetest comments I've read here. If you have a daughter, she's a lucky kid. :)

Anonymous Sheila said ... (3:12 AM) :

Haters gonna hate, but this is ace. All of it. /Especially/ the tattoo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:19 AM) :

Are the leopard spots a tattoo or body paint? I love them!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:41 AM) :

FINALLY! a real biker girl with a truly stylish ride. i was waiting to see this. nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:14 PM) :

Think what you may Anonymous at 2:52, but once you and your tattooed friends get older, your tats will droop and wrinkle just like your face.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:29 PM) :

Her hat wears the emblem of Flanders ...

Anonymous Claire Hensley said ... (3:42 PM) :

Have you people never heard of a Fixed Gear bike? You simply remove all the breaks, which makes the bike lighter and an easier ride. But stopping the bike is another story... Great shot though. I like how you capture style in many forms. I follow your blog ritually, and you never disappoint!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:42 PM) :

Bike Messengers have influenced hipster street style big time.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:43 PM) :

so punk!!!

Anonymous terry said ... (6:13 PM) :

This beautiful biker chic is my daughter! I loved reading all the comments, good and bad. What can I say? To me, she is a beautiful, confident, free spirit person, that loves life! Not crazy about the tatoo either...but if you knew her, she is the cutest, sweetest, funny girl! Love u!

Anonymous LOCKFOOT said ... (8:28 PM) :

Thats right Terry! Yall don't know skrimp about skrimp bro! It is entertaining to actually read some of these comments. Homegirl is working hard right now. the bike is not old (I sold it to her 2010), nor do we "take the breaks off so its lighter and easier to ride?" haha. This photo dexterously portrays the simplicity of our everyday lifestyle. Not to offend anyone; although it is a little funny how much hate I've felt reading these comments. After delivering your packages in the rain sleet and snow all day ere' day, give a little respect to someone else's lifestyle. Nice flick Sartorialist. Ill see yall on the street. !QuikTrak Represent!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 AM) :

there is nothing funnier than women who dye their hair, get botox and plastic surgery and starve themselves having issues with people with tattoos. My mother's tasteful tattoos that she got 25 years ago are just as lovely now as they were when she got them and she can actually smile and move her facial muscles since she doesn't do all the fake crap.

this girl is a great snap shot of what is so common and wonderful in cities in the US. It's not revolutionary for any of us that actually live in cities but I think it's great you are exposing more sheltered people to real street style.

as for wearing tight pants, the last thing you want to have happen is catching your pants in the chain.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 AM) :

To me push bikers and japanese kids
share the same WACKINESS!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:39 PM) :

She looks fit and happy. So nice to see. That bike is killer. I just noticed the scrapes on her legs. Be careful on those streets girl!

Anonymous Adele said ... (4:39 PM) :

I usually think this kind of outfit looks sloppy but I really like this one.

Anonymous Dana said ... (5:21 PM) :

This so much more of a 'look' than an outfit...she is amazing because of her tattoo, her bike, her piercing, her cigarette. Leopard print tattoo is so incredible! Jealous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:44 PM) :

to the people critical of this here adorably bold girl, chill out and maybe comment less on what you don't understand. she's great! first, the bike. yes its a track bike. this one is particularly great. it has the simplicity of 90's calvin klein with the outlandish palette of 80's stephen sprouse. for those who think track bikes are dangerous, just accept you don't ride them and you don't now what youre talking about. most of those who ride track bikes, not the trendsters, but the ones who will be riding for years if not for the rest of their lives, know exactly what theyre doing. hands down, theyre the best street riders in any city.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:53 PM) :

for those crying about her not wearing a helmet, odd how you didn't say anything about her cigarette. im guessing it has a lot to do with the how participants in conventional society so accept them despite the fact that theyre so incredibly harmful.

people should wear helmets if they want. great, if you feel safer.

there have been many studies that have shown drivers get closer to cyclists who wear helmets thus helmets are actually more dangerous. also, id bet this girl is safe as heck although im sure to the lay person it appears to all be quite dangerous.

and riding in tight jeans is safer and more practical... imagine being a runner and wearing something baggy. that would be ridiculous, no one does it. i bet her jeans are a softer, more giving denim as well.

this girl knows EXACTLY what she is doing!

that great looking biker chic is my beautiful daughter . a total free spirit full of fierce independence and a golden heart . We raised her that whatever path she followed in life we would always be there to walk beside her . We love her very muck and couldn't be more proud of her . Ride on biker chic and WEAR THAT DAMNED HELMET I BOUGHT YOU

Blogger andeh said ... (6:38 AM) :

I love it how people have such different opinions :)

Seeing girls like her, always makes me happy, because most girls nowadays are those barbie type girls which never leave the house without heels and makeup...and I'm fine with that, because I sometimes wish I was one of those barbies, but I'm not, I can't and I think I never will be one of them... so seeing normal, naturally beautiful girls, which don't necessarily care about make-up and long hair and stuff, make me really happy that not every girl is such a make-up addict and still they are gorgeous :)

I don't know what to say about tattoos... I love some, I hate some... her leopard tattoo is awesome :) and I think, we should stop thinking about how tattoos will look in the future when we get older...because, old skin looks ugly either so... tattoos or not.

What I love the most about this picture is that even though this girl looks more like a tomboy, she has that cute pink bike which is amazing ♥♥

Style points: 100 out of 100
Hip & urban and she owns her look completely

Helmet & cigarette points: 0 out of 100
Her life, her choice, but distracting in a pic because it makes me think the person is a little icky for smoking and a little too vain for a helmet

I'm not the judge, but I do think it distracts from the fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

have some respect. shes her own person doing her own thing. we are not judges, this isnt reality tv. she doesnt need a "makeover". trying to be perfect is as ridiculous as trying to be a unicorn, it doesnt exist. we are getting a little view, via an image, of someones life. she is one reason why i love new york. shes not afraid of who she is. STOP HATING!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:10 AM) :

Too bad she's wearing this separatist flemish cap...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:07 AM) :

Too bad I'm wearing this cap? im sorry, but I happen to like alot of the products vermarc has.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:26 PM) :

Wow, so many ridiculous comments on here. If she was a Milanese waif tottering through traffic in 6 inch heels with a cigarette in hand, you folks would only comment on her fabulous fur coat or her sleek coif. Here though everyone has to weigh in on this gorgeous girl's "unhealthy" cigarette, tattoos, lack of helmet, and "political" bike cap. Totally absurd and hypocritical. This girl is as stylish as any woman in Paris; the problem is you don't understand street style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:03 AM) :

dude this chicks adorable with her beat up shins, pink fixed-gear bike, puma speed cats, pops of color, confident swagger AND her cigarette and no-helmet-ness.
there is something weird about picking and choosing what parts you like and would leave out.
