Comments on "On the Street.....Navy Footies, Milano"
You could try uniqlo.
Easy! TJ's or Target.
yeahhh i'd rather the no sock BUT...if you have to :-)
xo.
http://dropsofjupiterBLOG.com
I found some at Urban Outfitters men's section packs of 3 pairs.
Johnston & Murphy! My husband always gets them in the Atlanta airport.
Banana Republic used to have them...
Excellent... ;)

You know, I've never been a fan of the footie. I say rock a good looking sock before a footie. Who knows, maybe I'll be eating these words soon!
Calvin Klein has these in mercerised cotton, or you can find 100% cotton ones at GAP or Marks & Spencer
Try the womens' sock department.
Nope.
I'm guessing they Keep Your feet warm?!?
http://www.made-classic.com/
K.cyrus
In Italy we call them "fantasmini", that sounds like "small ghosts"...
Puma makes really comfy ones that sit pretty low on the ankle.
Please, please do not wear footies. I understand the practicality of wearing them, but they do not have any class whatsoever.
H&M!
the sock man. but honestly, they have the best sock options in tokyo or korea
I love the look too!
www.FashionSnag.com
Fly British Air - you get them for free with a toothbrush and headset!
the shoes are GRAND.

Hey Scott, I can send you some pairs, they are very popular in Greece.
Yannis
Honestly, I used to buy a lot of my socks from the sock lady who set up a table in front of the Walgreen's at the south end of Union Square. She'd have footie socks like that 3 pairs for $5. They lasted for years. Otherwise I recommend Daffy's, SYMS or Burlington Coat Factory. No need for a designer label on something that will never be seen outside of your shoe.
PS - Just rememberd Century 21 has a great sock selection, too.
You should get the anklet socks from J.crew. They are for women, but probably would be lower on your ankles. http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/accessories/hosiery/PRDOVR~19179/19179.jsp
Please don't - that looks terrible.
Agreed, Sart. And not just for winter. Footies are the perfect prevention for sweaty feet in any season. Hate the feeling of feet stuck to shoes.
under the table in any restaurant. i play footies all the time with my fiance.
The anklet socks from J.Crew. They are the best! They are for women, but would be good for men too!
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/accessories/hosiery/PRDOVR~19179/19179.jsp
Uniqlo in Japan has them, maybe the one in SoHo too?
Every now and then H&M has 3 pairs for $6. only in black or white though. They are more of the no-show kind which imo is better than what dude in the pic is showing.
Not a great look.
Just fold down regular socks.
I'm American, but I've always called these "short socks"! :)
In Spain my brother buys a lot of that kind in sport shops like Decathlon (that is enormous!)
NY is big, you will find it.
bisous
http://paatstyle.blogspot.com
Oh dear god have you taken leave of your senses these are hideous beyond belief you should only wear footies when they are not going to be seen it'll be pop sox next stop it now!
don't know about the footies but love the shoes!
sabrina
http://sabthaglam.wordpress.com/
I just love a man who matches his socks to his outfit. Rock a good sock! Enough with the no sock look.
anonymous just said.
Nice kicks, but needs real socks.
I have plenty of those and bought ´em in H&M, cheap and nice !!
journeys has them in about every color you could imagine (http://www.journeys.com/product_listing.aspx?g=guys&p=app&c=854&m=SM&). 5 for $10 to $12 depending on color. I was paying almost that per pair at banana republic for something that was no better in quality.
H&M usually have them...
try H&M!
no.
I must say I'm extremely ambivalent regarding these: there's something of the bath-chair, or orthopedic clinic, about them. Perhaps in a vivid colour – pea-soup green, say – on a very young foot, they would work. Otherwise, I can't help feeling socks look best when either sock length or completely obscured by the shoe. I love to see a beautiful bare ankle, just not one that looks like it requires support.
His shoes look like they're made of dried and pressed Victoria plum skins: gorgeous.
H&M ! But without socks is not bad
I get packs of 4 footsie socks at H & M men's department - they come in different color combos - and two of the pairs are solid colors.
I have white and brown pairs - the brown for wearing with my brown Gucci loafers and yellow & brown docle & gabbana sneakers.
The solid white and color combo pairs for wearing with all my white sneakers.
These footsies are made out of the most comfortable jersey cotton / spandex combo.
I love them.
An idea takes place to be, I like effect of absence of socks, it is perfect!!!)))
I use to get footies all the time in Japan. I loved them. I wonder where I can buy them in the US they went great with ballet flats and were so cute.
Falke do them in camel and black
I dislike those "footies", they just look like black no-show ankle socks. Not very chic In my opinion. I wear Loafer socks If its warm enough to go sock less, which are super low and cover the bottom of your feet, toes and heal, and you cant tell the difference. If its too cool for sockless, I wear single colored socks. Those footies just remind me of all the Tourist in Charleston.. Just cant do it.
Angels Point of View
guys are correct here - H&M carries 4 pair sets in solid black, white and combos. i have them for years.... `and size are for 10-13 shoes...
but my italian friend got me really "no sock look" footies, they are completely inside the loafers...
i always thought those weren't supposed to be visible. otherwise, maybe H&M.
*sP
Haha! Love it! It looks like "no socks", but in fact there are!
http://red-soledfashionista.blogspot.com/
Banana Rep or J Crew
http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/socks/PRDOVR~31361/31361.jsp
UNIQLO might have footies!
love the no sock look when the weather permits it!

http://www.fashionbyjo.blogspot.com/
they always have them at H&M, at least here in portugal, they even have coloured ones, and white. try your luck!
Who calls them footies?
and the shoes are edward green berkleys 202, burgundy
No no no, long blue socks, is more elegant for gentlemen.
With a thing this delicate (in the sense that just slightly wrong, they can really ruin your look) I would make them myself.
Tailor made and color selected to fit a particular shoe.
It'll be worth the effort.
Hey ! Could anyone help me to find those shoes ?
Its ok to wear footsie socks but just make sure they don't show !
The whole point is to look as if one is going sans socks, while in fact, wearing these mini-socks discreetly for comfort inside the shoe.
My idea is...don't go there!
The Sock Man on St. Marks Pl. !!
Brooks Brothers or Paul Stuart. And btw, those kicks are pretty dope!
I cannot stand the word 'footie.' When I was a child my dad managed a shoe store and he and mom always made me wear those awful nylon things while trying on dress shoes. I felt so embarrassed about them, and even though I've gotten over the actual item, the word still haunts me.
I don't think that those are just regular short socks, they look more like from the "sail" world, made with some kind of waterproof material or similar. "Musto" or "Nautica" might have something like that but I am not sure where you can find it in NY ..

Seems like the sartorial equivalent of a plastic covered sofa.

Scott - I recall now, in my youth growing up in a Tennis mad town, when women wore tennis skirts, they wore these and the name was 'peds.' Indeed, J.Crew has black or white ones and they consider them for men or women. On their website for $8.50, and they look as if they might be less visible than the ones shown. I'd be eager to read of any results you or anyone else has, such as Century 21, since I'm often casually dressed with jeans & jacket with loafers in warm weather. Thanks!
robert at innatestyle.com
Sorry, I'm still not a fan of dress shoes and no socks, and I don't care if it's the 'flavor of the month' in mens' fashion; you still look like a hick who can't afford hosiery. Worse still are footies/quarter socks with dress shoes + trousers. I can see it with shorts & a more casual/athletic look, but this just doesn't make sense.
I'll be the one to say it; this is an 'emperor has no clothes' situation. Napoleon once said,"If you're going to take Vienna, take Vienna!"; in other words, no half-measures, and no half socks (or footies).
Any sports store EVER. Also, Costco sells them in packs of 10 for 10 dollars in every colour you could imagine. :P
Love Oxford shoes. They make any man or women look so interesting even if socks are included!
http://www.rawbeautyrawsoul.blogspot.com/
Are you serious Scott? You like these? Please Louise.
Ferfect and confortable as long as they don't show!!!
Try a golf shop - always have footies there!
A. Scott...how does one do this look (minus the footies) without getting dreadful blisters?
B. I recommend Filene's Basement in the UWS, or the new Target, UUES
www.jrocomedy.blogspot.com
I have loafer socks that I use for that purpose instead of going sockless in my expensive shoes and making them funky. BANANA REPUBLIC has the best loafer socks in the world. No kidding.
We have. In Japan,Tokyo.
and I love a "no sock" style,too.
Its simple and confortable.
Huh. I never thought I'd say this, but those dark-colored footies are working... they're just visible enough to add a soupcon of odd to the traditional shoes, and they hit in exactly the right spot to look good with those pants. In fact, I almost never like high-waters, but the footies shift the proportions of coverage & skin enough that the pants look more graceful than that style usually does. (And as Eryl notes above, a vivid color might be even better.)
I generally prefer funky socks proper with any outfit, and sockless can work well at times, but when men have thin ankles & good-sized feet, the wee wisp of ankle (nude or bestockinged) exposed by shorter trousers can create a truly odd look. These little footies help!
Why ruin your shoes when sweat from your feet is going to seep into them?
Is is really worth it by wearing no socks?
Walmart? Target? TJ Maxx!
this is silly.
if it's too cold to not wear socks, it's too cold to pretend to not wear socks.
I wear flesh-colored ones from Calvin Klein that I bought several years ago, but they don't seem to sell them anymore.
we call these ankle socks here in singapore :) they can be found everywhere here because students like to wear them so much! do you want me to send over a pair to you? :)
Mine are from Nordys. They are extra low cut so they won't show as the photographed socks. I wear them with my driving shoes.
Trust me, these are certainly your beat bet. Especially with the great elastic they use..
A recent find...
http://www.journeys.com/product.aspx?id=80075&green=15364038179&g=guys
fine!))
I like the no sock look but we both know what happens when you take of a shoe with no socks. I have similar ones but they tuck inside the shoe so you can't see them which I think is even better. You'll have to come to Australia to buy them unfortunately. haha
uniqlo has them!!
Love this man's shoes and no socks! Kinda Sexy!
It is not a "no sock look" if you can see the footie.
VANS footie socks are the all time greatest. very thick, very durable, and very well hidden (since they're made to be worn with the classic VANS slip-on). they come in 3 packs for $12, but are worth their weight in gold.
socks, or no socks. not, kinda socks
If you're wearing shoes like the ones in the picture I don't understand why you wouldn't go with real socks. On the other hand, in pumps or ballerinas they're meant to be invisible but they never are so footies are really absolutely useless, in my opinion.
H&M
Smartwool has a footie in women's sizes - maybe they come in men's as well - the one called Hide & Sleek is very low cut, Hide & Seek, somewhat less so. Cozier and a better fit than the discount socks.
elegant shoe!
i prefer those socks are "invisible", otherwise wear normal one with pattern, i think that would have more contrast to the outfit.
Sir,
you just have to go to a diving shop and buy these for much less money than anywhere else. Believe me, I am a diver from Germany and I use the Füßlinge also in that way. So be brave and try it!
Greetings from Berlin, R.
Most any sporting store carries socks for runners. Those seem to be redicilously low cut these days.
Love the style,
Edith Willson

Not sure about this choice... I you want to wear cropped pants in winter, just buy some good looking colored socks!
If only there were no 'footies'!
mad kicks
fresh threads
not feeling the 'socklets'
I'm not a fan of the little socks but the shoes are beautiful.
ugh. I've always found them extremely ugly. now i'm forced to rethink about them. I assure nothing, anyway.
High socks or no socks totally. This solution is terrible. In my opionion "footies" are ok only for sneakers!
Bye
well, they don't sell footies yet, but their socks are a-ma-zing.
and its french !
http://www.archiduchesse.com/lang-us/6-deville
urban outfitters has a great set of loafer socks
now this changes all my views on socks.
http://nouveauskin.blogspot.com
I love oxford shoes!!
LA MONA SE VISTE DE SEDA
www.lamonasevistedeseda.com
have the same problem. seems to be a good idea.
I prefer no socks or long socks
http://verychiclist.blogspot.com/
They sell these at payless
No!!! Not a good look. Sorry. Muji has great sox as does Paul Smith. Or none at all.
Maybe get creative and cut some sock low so they aren't visible. Charcoal ankle socks contrasting would be hot. This look as is reminds me of Nona and her Cumfs. Eek. Is this style? Maybe, but not worthy of your blog. Poses the question I guess.
Where do you think those shoes are from?
My boyfriend has been doing this no-sock look all summer -- even with a suit and it bugs me! So now you are telling me its good? Well, hopefully he will put some socks on now that winter is coming.
Its not a good look in my opinion but you can always do a google search for 'no shows' under socks--thats what Ive seen them called. Also they have ankle length which would even look worse ! :-) Jack
Sockless means sockless period!
I have to agree with someone above...VANS are absolutely the best. The are comfortable and almost completely invisible. They are cheap and come in both black and white...I have tried both Banana Republic and J.Crew, but VANS sit lower and are more comfy.
Those are silly and make no sense as you want a shoe sans the sock look. Proper socks look better and more elegant imho.
If you want to achieve the Tochi look (no socks in a mocasin or loafer then reach for the ladies department and buy a pair of invisible socks which they are a pair of tiny tights that just protect the vase of the foot
I think these are great for men--my man wears them. JCrew is a good spot. Used to go to target but still boycotting over their anti-gay political donations...
This had to be italian ;)

Buy socks ! Really !!
aren't these trousers too short???
This afternoon, on Amsterdam Ave. in NYC, I saw a guy on a motorcycle wearing gray footies with shoes just like the pictured ones. I did a double-take!
These look RIDICULOUS!!!!
Either wear socks or don't! The sockless bit is getting overdone and out of season. (Sock it to me!)
--JW
check those sockes in Japan next time when you are there. We have them everywhere in Japan!
Tip: Get an uncle who works in a sock factory! :P Never had to buy socks in my life!
I have plenty of those to use in the Summer or just to keep the feet confortable when I practice some sports (using more than one pair of socks)
Anyone else confused as to why this guy's shoes have no creases? First time wearing them or what?
Also, if you're going to wear socks like this, why not wear real socks?
For a no socks look try Falke invisible socks.
Noooo.... Please... "Fantasmini" are absolutely out!! Even more with this kind of shoes! Long socks or no socks at all!
In london, we call them sport socks, and most of the time their worn with trainers. Try places like Nike Town, JD sports, any sports shops basically :)
Also as someone mentioned earlier Puma do them and their really comfortable as their thicker, ideal for the winter!
Love From London X
I found some nice ones by Thom Browne at Bergdorfs.
they look ridiculous - the sort of thing old ladies wear - the no sock look, as its name suggests, needs no socks whatsoever!!
If its chilly enough to need "footies" then its too chilly to go for the sockless look. Summer only.
great option indeed !
Not sure if it works with the snow though...
Those shoes are gorgeous.
Nice on. I like it too
a great pair of shoes ruined,
There are several brands that make them - Hue or DKNY which you can get at Nordstroms, Macy's, etc. I like the better known brands since you want them to stay put and not slide under your heel.
Di from San Francisco
Try Sock Man store on StMarksPlace

Footies are great but only if they are not peeping out from the shoes. My friend's Italian son-in-law uses them. She asked him once if it wasn't uncomfortable wearing barefooted and he took off his shoes and the secret was the footies.
woww nice post thank you very much dude..
Hilfiger sells them in various colored 3-packs, unfortunately, they have the Tommy logo.
-Martin
Exactly...high socks or no socks at all. I prefer high socks of all times, whether it's summer or winter. Or spring or autumn...
I <3 SECRET SOCKS!
H & M has the low-cut type, which I prefer. Downside is when the elastic gives out.
Question: how does one wear socks with short trousers?
hmm dont thhink they have them in australia, aren't they just ankle low socks?
If you really want to weart wear footies, the only option for me would be in a very bright color. I dont really like the look this way because it looks like a halfhearted compromise. Just my opinion. Maybe i am a bit slow fashionwise concerning this trend ; )
Magdalene
We call them trainer liners here in England, and I think that's just about all they're good for! They can be bought almost anywhere, very common!
Socks, go to UNIQLO. That's what we say in Japan. ; )
So I think these navy "footies" (that's what we call them in America) are a great option.
They aren't for sure.
Just don't wear them at all. Totally without class, barely acceptable with sneakers. The no sock look is dubious anyway, a bit contrived I feel. This is just studiedly awful.
No go! If you go for the "no sock look" then wear no socks - if you want to wear socks - wear socks, but real ones - no footies, pleeeease! Unless they are so tiny you want be able to see them at all (in Germany available at every department store...) - but then, they are no use in warming your feet either!
Very simple.....just go to H&M!! ;P
perfect fitting of the trousers!
Hi Scott,
Welcome to Argentine!!!
Just for pleasure I´m a photographer (www.fedecabrera.com) and I really enjoy reading your blog.
In my opinion, there´re the "must do" in BA:

For atmosphere: Café Tortoni, Av. De Mayo 725, Microcentro; Plaza Bar: Florida 1005, Microcentro; Clásica & Moderna: Av. Callao 8923, Barrio Norte; Confitería Ideal: Suipacha 384, Microcentro; Confitería Richmond: Florida 468, Microcentro; L´Orangerie, Alvear Palace Hotel.
2) For food: Tomo I, Carlos Pellegrini 521 (Panamericano Hotel); La Cabrera, Cabrera 5127; Campo dei Fiori, Venezuela 1411; Club Eros, Uriarte 1609; La Bourgogne, Alvear Palace Hotel.

4) For Tango: La Catedral, Sarmiento 4006; La Viruta, Armenia 1366, Palermo.
5) For Street photography: Abierto de Polo at Hurlingham ; Palermo Soho & Hollywood; Puerto Madero Este; Las Cañitas.
If want a “local guide” it would be a pleasure to take you out, and I might even be able to teach some basic Tango steps.
I really hope you enjoy your time in BA!!!
Saludos,

No socks in the winter? Are you planning on breaking out the seersucker as well Sart?
Scott, I was frustrated with the selection of "no show" socks so I decided to manufacture my own line. Check out www.moccsocks.com
We make them in white, grey and black. PM me at moccsocks@gmail.com with an address and I'll send you some.
If you like the sockless look, then go sockless. Wearing short ankle-socks is not the sockless look, and you don't look sockles... you look like you're wearing short ankle-socks. Why not just embrace socks, and enjoy them? Don't try to sneak by with hidden socks, because they can't be hidden.
You have to come to Portugal!!

Interesting!

H&M
millions of colors and really good prices
What about American Apparel?
Honestly, sockless is already rather tiresome and just seems pretentious when pushed into cold weather. The, slightly showing, bootie won't keep your ankles warm.
http://stylites.net
I can send you some from here :)
I've had these and approve! But you do need more than these in winter. Even if you're trying to look like you're not trying. Socks in the cold are a necessity.
Please visit www.imeanwhat.com for more fashion news. Can you believe Katy Perry named her new frangrance, Purr? www.imeanwhat.com
H&M! no navy, but we have black or white!
corte ingles 3rd floor barcelona...
If you can see any part of the "sock" peaking above the shoe, then it completely defeats the purpose of the "no sock" look.
i completely agree. Just that little bit of sock is too much.
The most horrible site in fashion....Where socks or don't. Now it's just nothing. A 'no sock' look, but I can see a sock.
It just looks completely off balance. Now you see a little bit of the ankle and a little bit of the sock, it's just to busy for a person who probably wears a well considered outfit.
It's OK if you wanna wear 10 different layers and want to dress chaotic or untidy or just want to create confusion.
Ok, footies or ghost socks, but they must not be seen...so buy those one size less
If you're going for the sockless look, then do it! These aren't working for me. I either wear the SmartWool "Hide and Sleek", or I cut off a pair of socks just past the heel to prevent blisters. No show, either! This was fine for spring and summer, but my tootsies are now in boots and socks!
As pointed elsewhere: being sockless is an insult to good shoes... I rather like those small socks. I would wear them even in summer.
http://davidikus.blogspot.com/
Goodhew has some great socks, and I have heard rumors of some great men's "footies" for Spring 11, but in the meantime, they have taken care of the women:
http://goodhew.us.com/product-detail.html?id=6
What's even better is that they are made out of Merino Wool, Bamboo etc. So they are even more comfortable in all seasons!!
Vk Nagrani Makes the best one on the market! try looking him up.
wear womens size small, made from a stretchy fabric. you can find them in any color and when men with larger feet where them, they look like footies.
every korean wears that socks
this is just ridicolous and tasteless.
Please give us a breack, dear Sartorialist....
SmartWool socks make a footie sock that actually stay up! they are called the hide and seek OR for an even tinier footie, they're called the hide and sleek. they come in a few different colors and they are sleek hidden and warmer than a nylon sock! they might be on the website under women's but the sizes are universal, so a Large in the women's section is the same as a men's Large! good luck!
High water pants.
Low water socks.
I'm with the "no" crowd. Socks ok, no socks ok, but not footies with these shoes. To tell you the truth, I'm not wild about theses shoes with these trousers either...
If you have to look for socks like these... you should get the hell out of wherever you are at the moment(the amazon, or kalahari desert).
We've been wearing those for yeeeeears.
Best sock hands down.
VK Nagrani.

Believe it or not, the 1970s brand Legg's sells a product they call massaging foot covers and they are just the right size to not be visible IN THE LEAST. CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, they can be found everywhere.
I bought one at uniqlo in japan last year and its still working good
Vans has socks especially for their slip-ons. You know how low slip-ons are so these socks are extremely low, too. You wouldn't see them like you do in this pic.
American Apparel! They come in 3 packs, too!
Online at Journeys five pairs for ten bucks. they are actually for men I love them. http://www.journeys.com/product.aspx?id=80075

I am just like you. I love no socks (I only wear tights - I am a girl..) But I fell in love with the marc by MJ cashmere socks!
