I love it-- it's Mary Kate Olsen as a square dancer. Perfect juxtaposition of the huge sunglasses and iphone with a dress her grandmother might have worn 50 years ago.

Did you two have fun in Georgia? Can't wait to see what you may have spied in Savannah!

Seems a bit forced to be honest. I don't see any sane reason to wear that dress unless you're going to a hoedown, which she obviously isn't.

What we have here is good old fashioned irony, currently the trend among hipster folk - she's not a trend setter, just another hapless fashion victim of the decade

Fun to see, and different from the usual NYC street style. I wonder if she's garbed like that for a competition/exhibition, or just as a style statement.

The square dancing units in gym class would have been much more fun if we'd been able to wear these twirly skirts instead of our pleat-front jeans and white Keds! (Teenager of the 90s, here.)

and it is just not flattering to her in any sense - from skintone to her legs...
I have to give her props for being so bold, no doubt about that and I love the hair and the shades too.

Too much to be really wearable, but each one has different style.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:19 AM) :

Same vibe as the cosplay kids in Tokyo's Harajuku district. Not particulary country, definitely not Southern - but it is a hoot to read some of the impressions your readers have of life in the Deep South. Travel is the best educator, but you have to get off of the main road occasionally.

I grew up cloggin' and wearing outfits just like this. Not sure if she is really a clogger or square dancer, but growing up in a small town in South Carolina - this does not look at all forced. It looks like a weekend at the fair or local hoedown. This past weekend they held the Aynor hoedown in SC and I am sure you would have found many of these girls. The only difference would have been the shoes!

Thanks for reminding me of growing up in the South!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:33 AM) :

Beautiful composition in this photo. Even the colours of some of the graffitti match/tone well with the colours of the dress. Like the juxtaposition of the vibrant, happy, fairytale outfit with the cool, no-nonsense pose + sunglasses and phone in the street setting. The boots are a good colour that complements her hair colour very nicely.

Anonymous Best of Beehive said ... (10:40 AM) :

The juxtaposition is funny. My mac loaded the pic a little slow and all I could see at first was her head and the cell phone. Then I saw the rest of her outfit and it threw me for a loop.

Don't you ALL realise that this is a dance COSTUME???!!!!! of course its COUNTRY -read the title -its for a square-dance! I love how her attitude is not at all what you'd imagine when you think of square dancing. The accessories - hair, sunglasses, cellphone, clutch, the shoes - even the setting are a complete contrast to the dress! I just love it all! You are brilliant at capturing moments that are so significant and speak volumes about our current culture!

She's not being ironic. She's lovely and probably likes where she lives and was bought up, as she should. She may be re-interpreting a traditional costume somewhat, but that doesn't mean she's being disdainful. She's local, without being provincial. There are so few southerners featured on here. I love it.

listen, just because you slaves to fashion can't imagine yourselves wearing anything that isn't tailored and black doesn't mean that this lady's dress isn't stylish in its own way. this girl is wearing what she likes, and wearing it well (in my opinion). everyone's definition of style is different, just because it's not something you can imagine yourself in doesn't mean it's "forced" or "too much". heaven forbid a person has such a vibrant personality that they can't hide it behind "trendy" and expected clothing.

LP5!! I don't agree with a lot of the above comments, many people dress like this around Little 5 Points and VaHi, she looks great!

OK, you've gone too far. This gal looks like she stole her mother's tablecloth. She even took the napkins (see collar).

She appears so comfortable in this getup- love it!

I'm sorry, but although the majority of these comments are in favor of this...um..."outfit", I just have to say that I think it's god awful ugly. But, if she feels beautiful in it, then good for her. Fashion should make you feel good. :)

Wow. I lived there for 30+ years and would never have found this. You certainly nailed it. Feels good to see this from so far away.

Wow! It's amazing, seems exit by a cartoon! I will gladly wear a dress like that, just to go out for shopping. I think that the world must live on this way: with no rules of dress, without prejudice, but unfortunately there are still people who say you're crazy. But we must go beyond the trial, and appear to be what you want and it is!

great shot. Coincidentally snapped in front of one of the top spots in ATL to grab coffee & a bagel?...Mr. NY, I think not. Good find on the the young square dancer & Aurora Coffee. Salud.
