I love a man in rolled up jeans. Especially as this guy could conceivably been hiking (or at least walking with purpose) and got a bit hot so rolled them up supposedly for practicality... although clearly all the while knowing he's rocking a look. X

Very HANDSOME man with piercing gaze! He's one of those rough and athletic looking men who just looks good in anything, especially in a well worn look like this with the zippered skinny jeans, black shirt with pearl buttons, and obviously, his favorite pair of sneakers. His beard and mustache which he seemed to keep tidy make him look very dashing with bits of gray flanking his chin. Gorgeous!

Unless his basement apartment is flooded, that simply is foolish looking. He seems to have a nice look otherwise but that's a tad on the ridiculous side... especially for his age.

Very nice shot though!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:35 PM) :

Great photo! Gorgeous guy. But you cannot be serious about those jeans or those kicks!?!

His shirt fits him great and looks good on him, the back pack looks like quality and is useful, but he is WAY too old to be rocking the skinny jeans with zippers. Come on. Sitting down I don't like them, so I can't even imagine what they look like on him standing up...........

How can you capture the style of Italian men so beautifully (perfecto!) and dig this?

Sorry, too trendy (and ridiculous) for me. But I keep coming back every day b/c I love this blog!

Who says you should dress your age... that's just silly. I like the shoes because they're not converse- They're different and I like that. And I also like how he dresses young and not conservative, Just because your 40 doesn't mean you have to throw away all your sneakers and go with leather loafers! Common! Sometimes you just need to kick some sneaks! And about that tattoo-- seriously I have seen another photograph on this site of a man wearing paint splattered jeans on this site (( possibly the same person )) with his toe against a light post. I'm assuming it's the same Brooklyn Neighborhood and possibly the same person... I think you FREQUENT these people.

This isn't a good look in my opinion... it's forced in a specifically New York kind of way. I like the shirt and backpack, but the jeans are too trendy and not very masculine... which I think is important for men's fashion.

They are lovely but... the only reason a man his age should be wearing anything like this is that he is going to hop on his bicycle. He would look foolish were he not so handsome (and has such an excellent photographer!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:30 AM) :

He looks like a shy courier man waiting for the next pickup...he probably did not purposely dressed this way; the outfit is definitely just a fall out of life on the street, on a bike...... I like the image lots...

Cute shot. I like the jean cuff zips turned up that way (he must be a petite guy); I love the bag (well, what we can see of it); and I particularly like the obviously well-loved sneakers. They remind me of my current favourite sneakers I bought in Barcelona 2 years ago: 'Vialis aro'. They are still gorgeous: cumfy, stylish with large mesh panels for ventilation in the heat, they've got that same well-loved worn look, they remind me of how hot and wonderfull Barcelona was that week I visited.

Love the bag !!

Anonymous Sammy Sam said ... (2:36 AM) :

The backpack he's got on is a bike messenger bag (maybe 'chrome'?) and odds are the reason his jeans are up like that is so that they don't get caught in chain on his bicycle. Also, in regards to a previous post: your shoes will like that if you cycle without clip-ins but use eggbeaters, which as they are metal, tear up your shoes.

Although this was shot in new york, his style is that of someone from the bay (SF).

Blogger Caddy said ... (9:08 AM) :

I like how the look and color of his shoes contrasts greatly with the rest of his darker toned outfit.

Blogger chuck said ... (9:45 AM) :

I find the array of comments very interesting, particularly the naysayers. For one to compare their husbands ability or openness to mimicking this look is irrelevant. What is relevant is the man's ability to dress appropriate to his proportions and physique,as well as creating a chic example of today's casual culture

Anonymous Rob said ... (10:13 AM) :

I know this guy.
He's the guy in the painters trousers from a while back.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:03 PM) :

This guy cuts my hair! he's awesome...

Anonymous Alessandro said ... (12:10 PM) :

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The outfit is quite ordinary and the only remarkable aspect is the femininity of the jeans. It's an interesting photo, but it only serves to contrast how nice jeans can really look when compare with the photo below from Milan. I also don't understand why everyone is raving about the shoes; they don't even look practical for running, let alone look good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:21 PM) :

I've actually never commented before, but i think he looks amazing. Weather or not he tried to be sophisticated is sort of irrelevant, he succeeded, its not revolutionary but...this is a nice break from the suits and ties who look like they've approached style and have it by the neck to this casual but no less relevant design decision.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:28 PM) :

Agree with the comment from Petey above. It's a great 'bicycle look'.

After the below picture of the four Italians doing their age well, this guy just seems, well, like he's shooting for a lifestyle look that's a little too young for his forty-ish years...
But, judging by the adoring comments above, elegance or style is sometimes truly in the eye of the beholder.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:07 AM) :

This blog is such an interesting socio-cultural study, primarily because of the comments that the images provoke.

I take tremendous offense at those who assert this gentleman should 'dress his age' and that he looks absurd. I didn't realize there are rules to be followed at every age. He certainly does not expose 'aged' parts that are best covered, he does not look undiginified--he looks like he owns himself, and his body, like an integral adult, and he doesn't look false or imitative.

What judgements people still have about age and what is appropriate! Particularly regarding someone as inoffensive and, frankly, groovy, as this fellow. The moment we as individuals follow prescriptions about what to do and not to do at any given age, well, then, we might as well go straight to a rocking chair and stay there! Aren't some of the most inspirational icons those who challenge social norms and expectations and carry it off with aplomb?

I too think it is an Ortlieb bag for whoever said that. And I agree, this is fit, details, and personal style in a nutshell. Yet, there's something very simplistic about the look. I think it would be difficult to consciously put together a look with such ease that seems so effortless. But he's managed to do it. Great tattoo as well!

Yowza! Sexy, handsome, American man! love the trimmed beard and his great haircut. Give me this over seersucker summer suits with shorts/bow ties any day!

The bag is for outdoor use like hiking, boating, and cycling in wet conditions I believe. Its definitely not Chrome, the material is wrong. The roll top is to keep water from getting in. Not sure what brand it is, but there are lots of out door companies that carry them, they are generally called dry bags...and they've been around for years.

Love this! Everything is very fitted and kind of beat up looking. Very nice. Like it when you have something that's very nice quality and looks it's been worn for a long time. His attitude is nice too.

As a stylish guy in DC (yes, there are a few) about to turn *GULP* 55, I too am very much bothered by the remark that he is not dressed his age. What the hell does that mean? Do you know how old he is? Nothing on him looks silly or inappropriate. In fact, I think the rolled jeans on a younger man would just look a little too “fashiony”. It looks like they’d be too long rolled down anyway; so, simply as a practical matter, he’s ended up with a little something extra. Whether he’s a bike courier or not, I think it looks great. It’s a look, tho, that I just can’t quite do- won’t roll my jeans, and I can’t wear worn out shoes! Nonetheless, I think he’s got it all just right. From the looks of his grooming (hair and beard) and that expensive-looking bag, he can probably out-fashion most guys any day of the week. I bet he’s got a closet full of Ralph for the stuffy meetings and something Italian for the other times. Curious what he’s thinking. Did you have to talk him into the photo? Looks like he wants you to go away.
