Simple and classic. Just goes to show you can beat a good navy suit. Looks like two buttons, bit of white cuff showing. More of this sort of thing in London as well with 'Boris's bikes' getting everywhere in town.

Anonymous Laurent said ... (12:30 PM) :

Regarding "not moving" and "standing still" comments, google: "shutter speed". I don't understand the comments regarding bikes in Europe, unless they have never been there or never read. People commute to work on them, thousands of people, more bikes parked at a train station than cars esp. in Netherlands, France. Paris has public bike-for-rent, whereby you take one, drop it off at a stand at your destination. Commercial deliveries all by bike.Gasoline about $5 to $6 a gallon, Taxis are insanely expensive, Bikers in suits, dresses, even in the rain. Getting more common now in NY but really dangerous ( I have had 2 friends killed, by Taxis, of course).BEAUTIFUL SHOES, SUIT,fit, color and fabric

Anonymous Pia said ... (2:17 PM) :

Why don't you have the same type of biking mentality/lifestyle in US as we do in Europe? I never quite understood that. I'm from Finland but am living in Canada now, and even here, I don't see the same biking style as in Europe. I bike here with a skirt and high heels on and sure get a lot of stares from people in the cars and otherwise - I guess because I'm not wearing a Nike outfit and runners. And I'm NOT wearing a helmet, ever. My hair, after all.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

what on earth is he doing on this site? He's wearing socks! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:54 PM) :

May I suggest a visit to Amsterdam in your future? Living there some years ago was the best year of my life. The Dutch cycle everywhere, bikes being the primary form of transportation. Additionally, they're basically a tall people, so imagine everyone being 'long and lean' as well as fair and well dressed. Basically they're stunning! And then there is the cheese and chocolate!

Anonymous El Wonger said ... (3:08 PM) :

Now THAT'S the way for a grown man to be seen riding a bike to work. Elegant Batavus/Dutch-style bike WITH fenders and chain guard to save the suit, suit cuffed and hemmed just right, The proper pannier AND socks!

I don't know about anyone else, but I 've had quite enough of sockess men in trendy, ill-fitting suits riding track bikes.

Anonymous Damien said ... (3:10 PM) :

How does one ride a bike and not sweat through formal attire? I need to work this out...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:31 PM) :

Uh, I know about shutter speed, but even so, that must be a very fast one, those spokes are still, not blurred.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:35 PM) :

OK, get the idea of shutter speed, my mistake.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:40 PM) :

After leaving North America to settle across the Atlantic 3 years ago I have finally accepted that this sort of gentleman is just your average European joe using a convenient urban mode of transport, and not an exotic fashion plate. Though, of course, that doesn't stop me from sighing with the sheer visual pleasure of it all...

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:43 PM) :

What is it about Italian men that just enables them to look stylish in any situation? And Damien, I also wondered how the hell he managed to cycle whilst wearing formal attire. But after thinking about it, I very much doubt he was in much danger of breaking a sweat as this fellow seems more concerned with posing than commuting. And I say that with nothing but admiration as he works his classic Euro-suave look to perfection X

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:59 PM) :

"Can someone tell me how to ride a bicycle and not get shoes scuffed?"

It's the same as walking, you polish them when you need to. Though I find walking much harder on my shoes than cycling.

"But after thinking about it, I very much doubt he was in much danger of breaking a sweat as this fellow seems more concerned with posing than commuting."

You don't actually have to ride at breakneck speed. So you don't actually have to break a sweat. I ride slowly in summer and wear light dresses - no sweat, just a lovely self-made breeze.

Anonymous Megan said ... (8:01 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:06 PM) :

Can someone tell me the name of that bike, or even just the type of bike? Thanks so much!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:22 PM) :

Beautiful shot! @Damian the trick to not sweating is don't ride so fast. I lived in the netherlands for years and no one showers when they get to work, but they also ride at a more civilized pace than many cyclists in Australia do. ;-)

Ohhhh, LOVE this. Great composition in the shot. Wow!

I totally hear Pia on the helmet/hair thing ... but this is one of the few times I'll break my "wanna look stylish" rule - and I wear a helmet, I don't care how much it ruins my outfit. I'd rather have helmet hair and arrive alive (the helmet comes off the NANOSECOND I dismount!) than be dead in a great outfit. I'm in Canada, too ... drivers aren't as used to cyclists in this country!

Anonymous Valeriaa said ... (8:40 AM) :

In some part of Italy is common to use bikes to commute to work and to attend other business (shopping, etc.), expecially in northern Italy where there are many cities (like Milan) which are flat and easy to cycle around. I was raised in one of this small cities and we all go around with bikes, even my parents who are in their seventies. Normally if you bike around the city with such a formal dress means you live in the city centre not too far from where you work (or maybe you go to work by car and than you have a bike to stroll around the city). But if a street in Milan is so empty like it's in this pic it can only be taken on sunday.

Blogger Ben Hatke said ... (9:00 AM) :

Slick! And a very nice bike. I do wish we could get a better view of his saddlebag/briefcase. Bikes and suits really do work unexpectedly well together.

Blogger Liz S said ... (9:28 AM) :

Beautiful suit, particularly beautiful shoes.....although traditional. I am hoping for more photos of young and vibrantly creative dressers soon Sart! I mean particularly teenagers--so many of the ones I see around are inspiringly confident, articulate and thoughtfully creative in their dress sense. I am sure this must also be the case in other parts of the world. I wish I'd had all those qualities many decades ago.

I also agree with anonymous' comment re the people in Amsterdam. Too true--they are an inherently beautiful tall race--but bicycling certainly must help their leanness.

Bicycling is only really taking off in Sydney recently. Proposals of building bike tracks is met with passion for and against so it's difficult to establish this culture--the city was never planned with bikes in mind. This is part of the problem.
Another part is we have a love affair with the convenience of the car and many have to travel long distances to work. It's not uncommon for travel to be around 1-2 hours to and from work with public transport or the car.
Attempting to bike most places is taking your life in your hands and breathing the heavy traffic fumes is also not that great for your lungs which perpetually puts most off even trying.
BTW--helmets are compulsory here.

Blogger Hannah said ... (10:06 AM) :

This photo reminds me of Oxford. More businessmen should ride bikes. Great photography.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:37 AM) :

Thursday I'm in love ...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:36 PM) :

Striking photo. The angles of dark arms and legs juxtaposed against the angles of the bicycle frame ...

Helps to have a good looking man with a lean silhouette too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:40 PM) :

Love the photo and I already wrote.

But thinking more about the idea of biking to work. I do it, but with a helmet on. There are too many angry car drivers in the U.S.

Also, the bikes here in the U.S. tend not to be city bikes and don't have the chain guard seen in this photo. That makes for greasy pants and is the reason I usually wear jeans when biking to work. Wonder if I can fit a chain guard onto my mountain bike ...

Lol, this pic doesn't really help your case that you're not obsessed with people on bikes. That said, the subtle shine and wonderful tailoring of the suit just made this picture for me. And yes, it is nice to see clothes in motion isn't it? And what better opportunity to see it than on a bicycle?

Blogger Ciaragh-Lee said ... (1:17 AM) :

Milan has so much charm and obviously so do the men! "you look sweet going down the street on your bicycle dressed in blue" :)

If he got an attache case, how could he handle it?

Blogger Signe said ... (8:25 AM) :

Very nice. Bicycling parallell to streetcar tracks however can be a bit risky, as if one doesn't take care, the front tire can get stuck. The rider then usually keeps on moving forward over the handlebars... Would it be possible to design with a helmet that could fit like a cap, or under a hat or a scarf, and be based on the technique used for airbags in cars?

Anonymous la recessionista said ... (8:59 AM) :

I love the colors ! And how you took the picture. It's just an amazing work ! www.larecessionista.fr

I love the fact that men all across our world (except for the U.S.) ride bikes at any age. That will surely be me in the next 30 years. Except a little bit more chocolatie.

Anonymous Cara said ... (1:56 PM) :

this is a great photo. But I would love to see you post shots of bicyclists wearing helmets. There is a notion that a helmet ruins the fashion forward look of riding a bike (I myself dont always enjoy wearing a helmet). But I think its always cooler to value and protect your brain, and I think that there is an inherent cool attributed to people who dont give a damn how ridiculous a helmet makes them look. And besides I am sure you could find someone who makes a helmet look good. I could use the inspiration.

I like the cloth splash guard over the tires, necessary for such attire.

Never seen anything like that for sale anywhere, probably because in the US anyone who cycles does so dressed like an alien.

Blogger Rachimus said ... (9:23 AM) :

i am a massive fan of the use of bikes full stop. if we were to see more of this: confident, professional people using bikes as a vital means of transport, if it were to become a fad per se i think it could end up making a massive impact on our lives as real people and the effects leading from that are multitudinous, real and good. lets hope this catches on!
