Comments on "On the Street... Thirteenth St., New York"
theres a light on him that isnt there in the second picture? sunlight? love the two contrasting images, and how he conveys a real sense of self in his demeanour and attire :D
Great confidence! You can tell that this man has a wonderful sense of humor.
Nice charisma...
ha! love his expression in the second photo.
2nd photo,His expression is so nice!:)
Rasta Man vibrations Very nice love the diversity
This reminds me, as an old man told me on the street the other day, to "be happy darling!" And I love the vertical coordination of colors in hat/necklace/belt.
What a great idea to combine camo with colour. Except the fat bling ding ring is hideous - such jewellery seems to be quite popular in the US, which doesn´t make it better.
love the jewelry!
what an awesome attitude!!
The second photo is great. I love his smile!

so inspiring!

"i like You"
:)
wow! These are great! I'd LOVE to hear the conversation behind these...
I'm usually always curious with how you asked each of the people in your shots and how they responded. But this guy I'm extra curious about.
Fabulous. He's looking so warmhearted. I think he has a good character.
fantastic!
Great image and I love the contrast in its outfit, wearing rasta look with a military camouflage shirt. He has style with the rainbow colour accents.
The face, the gaze, the hands. Clothing doesn't matter here, just so it doesn't detract.
This guy is sharp. Real. I like him.
coooooool
you're a big always find these people on the street
hahahaha the second photo took me by surprise. loved it :)
love the juxtaposition between the first and second photo :)
The boots are essential for troddin through Babylon. Fire burn, Scott, fire burn!
Thank you SO MUCH for the two starkly different expressions on this brother's face. Although I love reading the comments on this blog, I'm sometime's frustrated that commenters place too much emphasis on facial expression---as a way of "knowing" the subject. Snapshots only capture a brief moment in time. The two contrasting expressions here cement the idea, really, that you talked about in your interview on The Treatment: these are less photos of the subject, and more the momentary view of these subjects by you, Scott.
And I love the brother's style, too, by the way...
love!!
what a delightful gentleman..
great style tho

Lovely shots Scott. It's quite obvious summer is beginning to wain. I know it doesn't seem possible to those of us who live in the south, but you can see it in the light. The pitch of the sun is changing, the days are shorter, and the sun is taking longer to rise in the morning. And I can definitely see the change of light in your morning photographs. Both yesterday and todays shots are just beautiful, a certain softness that only comes from a great photographer and his use of light.
Now on to this gentleman. He is the bomb, love him. His outfit is soulful and perfect from head to toe. Great expressions, he appears to be a very loving a friendly fellow. Someone you'd like to meet, someone you'd definitely say hello to on the street and have a conversation. Happy!
I love his confidence!
Becca
I love what your dropping on here these past few days, Scott. I love this man's swagger and youthfulness! He commands originality and energy.

This photo is IRIE!!!..reminds me of my years spent in Jamaica....fi true mon, fi true..... :)
Great style and I agree that he seems very genuine. I liked him right off the bat. All the green has me in love for fall too.

Oh, this is too good!
Character......
Nice attitude!
PS Scott, this is for you... You're inspiring! ;)

the colors work perfectly.
http://theroovintage.blogspot.com/
The photos catch the Yin and the Yang of this gent. His Power Glare in the first shot tells you to stand back and his playful "Gotcha" in the second invites you in. The contrast of his demeanor mirrors the contrast in his style--the combat fatigues juxtaposed with the Ja Love vibe of his Rasta colors. It's quite wonderful. (Btw, there's a weird flare on his shirt on his left front about halfway down. What is that?)
You always seem to "capture" these stately looking African-American men on the street. They pose like crazy and look great in outfits that would look terrible on anyone else.
Scott, you've got it going on! (and you keep me from working too!)
Haha, the second photo made me smile. :)
I love the match of military and vibrant colors. He has a great character with full of youth.
Haha, my Facebook-dominated mind cannot think of anything else but 'LIKE' right now.
beautiful!

absolutely FANTASTIC
he is so incredibly stylish yet every article of clothing or jewelry is harmonious with his personality.
This pic is almost as good as having you here in Jamaica. Made my morning, thank you thank you.
:)
nothing new here, but he looks good. and a big smile is always appreciated.
open sesame...
Fabulous! Absolutely love this guy!

His clothes appear ironed. NICE.
Love it!!!
He is awesome and you can just bet he has some good stories to tell. Love him!
LOL his eyelids look heavy. I guess he's been talking to Jah :D
SEEN!
I love his massive smile. Classic Rasta style, but updated with messenger bag and Red Wings. Nice!
Was he a Bobo Shanti Rasta?
@ anonymous 8:46 - I think the jewelry's has religious significance with reference to the Lion of Judah.
I loved it!! Great look!
Rastafarian/black nationalist? Great style though...rebel-esque.
:D I love the 2nd picture! I couldn't stop smiling while I was looking at it! :]
http://www.style1509.blogspot.com
It looks as though you can see a street light through him in the top pic. He must be a phanmtom.
His shoes look like nomme de guerre x red wings
what an amazing smile!!! and the gold ring is fabulous!
He is a song of freedom; I feel redeemed.

Oh, I love it! It's the kind of street style that one might pass by everyday, but I think you've really captured the essence of this man.
I love the second photo, it made me smile! :D
xx, fashiongoodies.net
Don't worry, be happy. Totally.
fridayswithcilantro.blogspot.com
Well, what really makes me tick here is how great that golden ring looks in his hand... I am not a fan or jewerly, I don't like big pieces of gold, but sometimes one thing like that looks great on a certain individual.
Utilitarian, inexpensive, but great coordination of color, clean, pressed, and shined boots! Proud of appearance. Quintessential cool dude.
WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, this guy just makes me smile all day!!
actually don't like the style, but the person in the clothes seems to be nice, and that's what its about ;)
WOW! I love his genuine smile, gold jewelry and braided belt. I love the contrast between the two completely different expressions.

This man is everything that I love about NYC.
and, I think the little beardy thing that he has going on is just divine.
I like his smile:)
such happy photographs :-)
If I saw this man walking towards me I'd think ooo I like, so well coordinated, so neat, so unusual along with the head wrap...damn he looks cool. Then when he got close enough I'd flash him a coy smile, hoping he'd smile back and say hello. He makes me want to be a part of his world even for a millisecond.
Some people just have it!
Love his smile !!

-diary of a fashion stylist-
fantastic picture! i love that you got his personality to come out in both shots, both in different ways. the second shot makes me smile. great character this man.
This man is beautiful. His energy radiates right through the photo and makes me want to know him. What wonderful charisma.
As a character study, I adore it.
However, I've always been uncomfortable with camo as streetwear. If you're willing to serve your country in it, for better or worse, then have at it- it's a right that's earned.
Naturally, everyone also has a right to express themselves as they please, and this city is about infinite variety.
I live in Berkeley, CA. Everyone is dressed like that here.
he is just so cool
Love these shots! He seems like a humourous and friendly man! :D
Beautiful!!
A real African treasure. The picture tells the story of a struggle towards freedom.
loving how his light shows through his smile and eyes, I also love the shoes and smooth skin.
Too cool 4 skool. He's delicious!
Fantastically charismatic gentleman, with grace, charm & style to boot. I would invite him to dinner, no questions.
yes, great smile.
he is so adorable!
a pacifism mand wearing military clothes is always a good contradiction;-)
It's funny that this picture is posted now. I love my people and how they represent themselves stylistically. This just gave me a confirmation i needed on how to proceed with my work. Thanks for the design intervention.
These two images together say a lot about the still magical powers of the camera and how, in the right hands, it can be an effective tool for breaching the tough exterior of an individual and for exposing precious inner beauty.
I love the camo look, it looks great done this way. He is definitely posing in the first picture, giving us his model's stare. The second photo is him saying, SEE, I was putting you on! As for the ring, necklace and the belt and hat, I think they're cute.
LOVE him. he just seems like he's so much happier than anyone else in the world. i want to know more about him!
This is Melvin. The best juice man in the city and a sweetheart.
Love it!!! Everything about the juxtaposition is clevahhhh!!!
You know for a following that believes all that is Babylonian is next to the selling out of one's proverbial soul those are some pretty cool Babylonian boots he's sporting. I love them. love him! I believe in live and let live but always find it amusing to see bits of 'outside' the statement in an ensemble.
Charmant...la belle vie!
I love his smile in the second photo.
totally in love with this guy.
he exudes joy.
I love the shot. The fit is cool too.

He looks just GREAT!
And what a smile and what an attitude
LUV
Awesome. So much personality there.
Would love to have a cup of coffee with this guy and listen to his story!
I walked past him one day in July. He had the same outfit on. I missed the opportunity to ask if I can take his picture
You've captured so much personality in these photos! I can't take my eyes off them. He wears this look with such style.
I like this man!
Love this look. It suits him and it somehow all fits--he looks pulled together. What a smile on this guy.
Selasie I. Great picture, mon.
clothes are wonderful while practical -
lurve the way the light softly hits his face.
..& his outfit :]
I love his dignity and pride in the first photo followed by the love in the second.
Telling, very telling.
He has such a confident, humourous attitude; he was probably such a fun guy to be around and his clothing reflects that.
http://chaoticdesolation.blogspot.com
Gorgeous skin tone. And happy attitude.
that's cool.
charisma is such a cool thing to wear. not everyone can pull it.
Are those Wallabees on his feet? Haha, true Jamaican, love it.
I love how one look at his photos tells me that this man is someone I'd love to hang out with. He has a great sense of humor.
love it!!
I feel so happy looking at this man - oh, the power of a genuine smile.
You can really get a good look at his personality just looking at this. He seems like a great, fun loving guy!
I see this man on the street all the time!
I seriously cannot stop smiling while looking at this gentleman! he reminds me of so many of my friends' uncles and even a couple of their dads. his spirit shows right through his beautiful smile. thanks for posting this one, i needed it.
As soon as I saw the second picture, I immediately smiled. Something about his expression just evokes a knee-jerk smile reaction in me.
Also his outfit is awesome. Love the headwrap.
I absolutely love this picture! He has become me new fashion icon!! everything about this picture shouts happiness. The confidence he has for being his own person, making a statement. wow
