Nice Bike.

http://tresfraisnajee.blogspot.com/
He looks somehow as if he's uncomfortable in this situation. The first word that came to my mind seing this picture was: stretched.
I find it interesting that it is mostly italian men who don't wear socks with their suits. You wouldn't find that in Germany, no matter what temperature.
Love the bike with the suit and of course no socks !
Love the bike! nice photo.
Thanks
LOVE LOVE LOVE
this photo has an exceptional color palette, I love how crisp his white shirt matches his hair and bike..really nice
he looks like an intrepid exlporer (in a good way)
i like his look but tell me something, shoes without socks? seems sweaty, uncomfortable, and looks unfinished. No?
Patch pockets and tan ankles are the perfect touches for a casual summer suit.
www.thesluicebox.com
Stunning, just stunning.
I love the clean lines and the colour.
The suit is great as well.
I love your blog, you're the best.
We follow you. If you want you can go into our blog.
Kisses, Sarai
I just love the colours, tones and framing in this image. Beautiful.
My dad has started following your blog and has taken note of the distinct lack of socks on men in the summer. He is a little conservative and tends to at least wear those thin nylon or silk socks in the summer with dress shoes, but hopefully he's being inspired to broaden his style horizon!

Distinguished on wheels. I love it.

Dress shoes without socks. It's cool, but so uncomfortable.
Khaki green is such a lovely colour, basic but not black. And nothing looks more beautiful with a tan, you look just kile you came out of an adventure!

Italian men really do have the sockless look all wrapped up. The shorter pants and sleeve length are unexpected but work well.
Love his outfit, although i was half expecting his shirt cuffs to be open.
No socks looks so relaxed
Wow, this has got to be one of my favorite color palettes: the green-gray suit against a similar background offset by the white hair and bike and black glasses and shoes.
A question: are Italian men as lovely as they look?
single speed style
Healthy chic at his 60s.
Beautiful photo!
The man is so stylish!
Simple and stylish, the trend is shorter and pants in all the parades we are already seeing this new way of using a master terno.Um but with young spirit.

Looks like not a cotton suit, but rather closely matched colors. Still looks great. I wish Americans would get over their "image", and feel comfortable with business people on bikes.
I normally don't like shoes w/o socks, but it works here
GReat shot, and inspiring for me to get a comfy cotton summer suit.
Whole photo composed of lovely tones. A man blending with his natural habitat.
the bike with the white handlebars is just overkill right? i love that most of these men in suits don't wear socks. i guess it's cooler that way?
This is a great shot. I love how he put on a suit to ride a bike!
You have a great eye
http://gabythefashionista.blogspot.com/
great picture!!! I hate socks too ;-)
Interesting that some people have raised the issue of wearing a suit without socks - surely it's the formal shoes without socks which are a problem?
There's no question that these are formal, black dress shoes - which should NOT be worn without socks. Some shoes, like boat shoes, can look perfect without socks - but formal black dress shoes...no.
Love no socks (:
http://pineplanet.blogspot.com/
I am always happy to see your photos in which people seem to emerge from the environment as if they were blooming from an urban tree.
This gentleman wins because he doesn't listen to any of you sock addicts. I like to wear no-show socks with my dress shoes in the summer. All the carefree comfort of sockless living without the usual discomfort. I really don't understand why anyone would follow the Sartorialist if one doesn't want to broaden one's fashion horizons.
What is the doohickey hanging off the top tube, about two inches in front of the seatpost?
The debate on socks or no socks is really just a point of preference. You can tell this guy is loving it and knows how to pull it off.
It seems some people are thrown off by thinking dress shoes are uncomfortable without socks but a great trick I've found is to wear a pair of no-show athletic socks (the thin kind) and fold the back of the sock under the heel so its keeping your feet nice and dry and looks like you're not wearing any socks at all...voila!
A summer favorite of mine is to rock my chili Allan Edmunds w/ no socks! Give it a try.
I'm actually getting used to the "no sock" look. How are they able to wear suits in that heat? Is it linen?
Perfect use of black dress shoes, they go perfectly with the green suit and bike. Feels very modern and understated.
You can't help but love a gent on a bike.
nice photo !
nice bike
ridiculous, I think is not worth such a risk
Great! And yes, if you are wearing really good shoes, you don't need to wear socks, good leather is better than socks. love the suit!
it think it is interesting that so mnay italian men in your photos are not wearing socks.
personally i love it. especially for a summer look.
Love the colour of that suit, and the crisp whiteness of the shirt. Love the fact that he's riding a bike even in that suit!
http://stylebouquet.blogspot.com/
There are two things that draw my attention in this photo. First off why his suit is so short and then secondly why he is riding the bike with dressy shoes. It is so odd and unnatural that I cannot find it posed. It then becomes his style and essence which it distinctively unique. I really keep pondering this outfit and it just makes me love it all the more.
Looks like the scene from a movie...
you can own a look at any age any time.
www.fashionsmind.blogspot.com
amazing how he's able to ride and look good...especially in those shoes too
A double vent jacket works better when riding a bike (or a horse).
wow, cool guy. i wish my dad looked like that
Love this look, Sart. He is Italian no doubt by the sockless Oxfords look. I can do sockless loafers but dressing down Oxfords is a stretch. Everything else...cotton suit, white shirt, unbuttoned jacket sleeves, business frame glasses, watch and even the type of bike is a business/sport mix. It looks like he was at work, took off tie and socks, commandeered the fastest transport and made it to the show.
good leather - no sweat.
Does anybody know what make the suit is?
thanks
I love this. Italian men look like they can go for a 5 mile run in there suits and shoes. Love the seams on the jacket and the slim sleeves. Oxblood are the perfect shoe choice for this suit.I'm jealous!
Amazing sporty style.
http://tovogueorbust.blogspot.com/
@San: Believe me, Italian guys they actually do wear socks, but the invisible one ;-)
Hi, I love this look, the color of the jacket, the patch pockets, makes me want to go out and buy a fresh green suit. He is all business, except that he rides a bike.
I love the colour of his suit, and the bike totally completes it, for some reason.
When will you be @ Rotterdam? I hope soon!
xoxo Sootjeelina <3
Especially the bike is beautiful. Perfectly cleaned, a lot of chrome parts, brandnew tyres and no gears. A bike you would buy to show off but i would certainly like to have one myself.
I want to know how these men ride bikes without getting their cuffs caught in the chain. Or grease on their cuffs. Or scruffing their shoes up ...
I love the look, though. Just, as a biker, I would have shredded those clothes in about 3 minutes.
nice bike ;-))
Caro - bloggeuse from Geneva
Wow he doesn't really strike me as the fixed gear rider, but he's pulling of with his suit what he's doing with the bike; Simple, elegant and no unneeded things.
Not related to this post, but I just saw that you were listed again as one of Time magazine's best blogs in 2010. Congratulations
This appears to be a man of wealth and taste from top to bottom. natural gray hair, unencumbered by dye or coloring, skin smooth and unadulterated by tattoos or other accoutrements, a simple bespoke suit, nice shoes...
And look at the bicycle; rendered in just two neutrals, white and silver, with an absence of any distracting graphics -a perfect compliment to any ensemble.
Wow great picture, it really says it all. Bravo
the color of the bike pairs beautifully with the suit.
Why aren't tailored capris for men more popular in the states?? It is a handsome look for sure. And practical.
Really stylish!
Italians - they even have the most stylish cyclists, don't they?
Nice color palettte! From his hair down to his bike! lol
this is an incredible look. the whole package is sensational.
Style. Straight up.
This photo is absolutely brilliant, Scott. You have a great eye. The color palette is crazy: flow from the concrete walls, down the railings and steps to the brick on the ground, up to the suit. Even the chrome on the bike flows with the other neutrals. This man could easily blend into the background but he has a quirky presence, almost theatrical on that bike. Like he's the director of his pose. And he's sharp: the shoes are smooth and dark and the crisp white of his shirt ties into the bike fork and handles. And my dad would love that bike.
grownups are cool
I love how the bike is like an accessory and i love how he has no socks it adds to his outfit.
http://faialofa.blogspot.com
This is how i hope to look when i'm at a certain age
i love his brooks saddle- perfect white!!!! beautiful bike awesome casual suit
Scott- While the suit and bike are beautiful, let's stipulate that if this man actually owned this bike he (1) would know better than to ride his fixie in $500 dress shoes, and (2) would have rolled up his right pant leg.
As a cyclist and a fashionable individual I had to comment finally. I've been coming here for a year and a half--two years and this is the first time I've dropped some comment science.
He's riding a single speed by the looks of the cog. Campagnolo record pista crank, cinelli bars, nitto or cinelli stem. Not sure of the frame. I ride my SS every day to work but I leave my dress shoes at work and wear florescent adidas ZX shoes to and from work.
I love the suit colours, looks breathable and love the no socks look. I'm guessing most men are getting suits hemmed with the Millhouse flood look.
Next year I'm riding my bike from Barcelona to Italy. However I'm tempted to just move there. I don't know how but the fashion sense, culture, cycling, pasta, I love Italy.
Super in love with this man's outfit and the fact that he is riding a bike!x
xoxo

Oh, such a picture! Well, I think that I already said, like, a million times that all my fav pics are the one that have bycicles in them... And that is one of the best! I am not even going to start listing what I like about it, because it would take me forever.
Mr. The Sartorialist - you are the best (...with Garance Dore... I love her work, too!)
This man is definitely an icon for his age cohort group: fit, stylish, presumably educated, and presumably environmentally-conscious.
Beautiful image. I love that his suit blends so well with the wall!
http://www.beso.com/
He looks very uncomfortable on that bike - it doesn't fit him - and if he actually rides it he'll end up wrecking the cuff of his right trouser leg and his lovely shoes too.
That is so impractical. Either bike or wear a suit and look dapper. Don't try to be a hero.
Love the length and narrowness of the sleeves and pants of the suit ensemble.
That washed out khaki green is beautiful; it compliments olive skin very well.
www.whatinthenameoflove.blogspot.com
Wow...I wish I'll be like him when I'll be older ! totally in love with his outfit !
Hari,
http://harilay.free.fr
Love the bike! nice photo.
If anyone (male and female) can wear shoes without socks in the summer and dare to take off your shoes in a room without emitting offensive smell, you have plastic feet. The combined smell of warm leather and sweaty feet is enough to wake up the dead. This stylish gentleman will remain my friend in picture!
Ivan with a good nose
This is casual and chic both. I love this look, the white makes it chic, the suite is casual. If he would wear a shirt, it would change into boring. And no socks, I don´t like it that often, but this makes it here for me. And nothing to say about the bike! Gorgeous ensemble.
simple, sophisticated, debonair...also, I love how his bike matches his hair & glasses. that's some rare, but perfect, accessorizing.
This is -again- why i check your blog. Real, cool people. Thanks for sharing.
Sigh..I die. He, and the Dreis lovely would make a beautiful couple..No!
They breath perfect, classic, skillfully edited, contemporary style.
after the movie star arms of yore, i hated tatoos Today, i love them again upon seeing the dries lovelys' wristlet.
as always ..a stylish man in a sockless shoe...on a white bike.. does me in!
Can just see her riding atop his handle bar italian design basket gleefully flashing that warm smile whilst wobbling on the cobblestones..as in a movie;-)
Oh there i go again, fantasizing your beautiful guests' lives.
they ARE style.
Gratzie,
Annabella
The shoes are a tad bit out of balance with the lovely linen suit, too bad. Other than this he is wonderful. Great suit, sexy middle-aged Italian man. Keep them coming Scott.
Kathleen
Once again this guy & all Italian men DO WEAR socks! They are wearing something called "fantasminis" which are small hidden socks invisible underneath the shoes!!! Get your facts straight people, before making the assumption that they are not wearing socks. Sheesh!
I wonder why the guys on bikes here never look this smart. God I like Italy.
nice bike! he needs socks. going sockless is bad for your shoes and makes you look like a child.
Your bicyclist shots are some of my favorites!
www.FashionSnag.com
Magnifique vélo !
Shoes without socks. I cant understand that. Bad for the shoes and unhygienic
I think I'm in love!
This is so typical european. I can't imagine a man with this style on a bike in the US - I just can't. Like it!
http://stylishmuse.blogspot.com/
i love your bicycle shots and that he's not wearing socks. people on bicycles in Los Angeles do not look this lovely. thank you for posting.
www.edgeandgrace.com
love the pocket size...just perfect for a notebook
To quote the Kids IN the Hall:
He's hip. He's cool. He's 55!
FAIL.And the weird thig is I really can;t say why. He's exquisitely coiffed and dressed in a beautifully tailored suit, but I can't shake the whole 'man who's dodging death through staying hip' vibe. Probably the fixie and the sockless thing as a combo is niggling at me.
I 'll love being like that in his age
http://coolneeded.blogspot.com
Love this gentleman's attitude and his shiny racing bicycle.
San, on the first comment, is right: german men would wear socks... they usually wear socks even with sandals! :)
I'll never understand why so many people on this blog are afraid of "sockless" looks. I mean relax! As long as your personal hygiene is all right and you're wearing real quality leather, nothing is going to go wrong!
p.s. more uniform please! I really really liked your "Not Hiding Behind her Uniform" post.
Fantastic photograph, love the use of white and beige in this picture!
aoideart.wordpress.com
Sweet bike!
People you can wear socks looking like...you´re not wearing socks at all. I use them...they only cover your feet...they don´t reach the ankle...very useful ;)
Wish I had a proper city to ride a bike...
Beautiful bike! But, how doesn't he get chain grease on his pant leg? Maybe I'm just clumsy, but I have ruined many a pair of lovely pants that way.
Dears, any tips for what kind of shoes (except comfy mocassini) should be worn with no socks?
I tried with classic Church and Bottega Veneta and my feet are still bleeding :(
Or is it just for the time of a picture....
What a funny photograph! If you look at only the top half, he looks so straightlaced and conservative, with his starched white cuffs peeping out and his grey hair and spectacles....
I don't like what's going on on his feet - the shoes don't lend themselves to socklessness - they need to be less formal and shiny. For me, the naked ankles take the whole look apart. Pity......he's so nice, otherwise.
Great look.
To those saying he looks uncomfortable or the bike doesn't fit - you obviously don't ride road bikes. It's a good fit for him and you need to be a bit stretched out compared to a 'sit up and beg' style bike.
To the person who said his saddle is a Brooks - it isn't. It's a modern San Marco Regal. I have a black one. Much more comfortable than an archaic 'cheek spreader' Brooks.
To the person who said he's wearing Capris - he isn't. They are just well tailored trousers that have risen because he's sitting on the bike.
I suspect he rolls his trouser leg when he's riding to avoid the oil getting on his trousers.
I'd put a simple chain guard on there to avoid having to that and fit normal drop brake levers to make the bike look less 'fixie courier wannabe'.
But it's a 9/10 look and infinitely more stylish than anyone I've ever seen on a bike.
Would love to be able to do this. But hard shoes on a bike are to uncomfortable for myself.
will be doing a feature on the GANT bike on my site though. http://individualism.co.uk/
I love him- and think he's a bit of a silver fox too
aaah Scott you got another good one. I love the way the line of his arm echoes the stair rail, a fab composition, and lovely drab colours against sharp white!
Yeah, I'm thinking I'd like to have a cocktail or 6 with this guy! :)
This chap's bike is much too small for him; it's obvious because he can put his foot flat on the ground while sitting on the saddle. If he put his saddle up to the correct height he'd have at least 20cm of seat post showing - ie.far too much - and his bars would be much too low. I suspect this is not his bike.
that is awesome!
i dont like no socks look
He looks great, but the thought of actually cycling in those shoes (especially with no clips and straps) scares me.
If anyway is interested in some dressier shoes that are actually designed for cycling have a look at http://www.quocpham.com/
And hard wearing but nice looking trousers: http://outlier.cc/
It's his bike, no doubt. If you fancy dress shoes, you wouldn't want them to be ruined in the toeclips. So no toeclips. The bike is a tad too small, so are his trousers. It's poetry in statement.
For the love of god wear some freaking socks.
I think its fabulously refreshing for a man not to be following the conformity that men seem to have to abide by when wearing a suit that somehow socks have to be worn with the brogues, I think it looks wonderfully relaxed!
Great picture, I love the cohesiveness of the colours. I have no problem with the no socks look as I doubt that he isn't wearing socks. He's probably wearing the ones that aren't ankle high. The bike is a thing of beauty. It's so shiny and clean, but the lack of mud guards / fenders make me suspect that (even assuming it is his), this is a fair weather bike.
At last, someone riding a single speed bike who looks stylish and not a wannabe bike messenger.
I LOVE HIM!!! Such an elegant man of a certain age.
He looks like he runs a company. I'd love to work for someone like that.
