Wow, she looks like an Austen heroine down to the waist, and then....

Reading from top to bottom - It is the hair and the grey Converse All Stars. I love the twists, texture and colors of her top knot and of course on my short list of summer wants are grey Converse. And then the romantic eyelet dress with the contemporary bracelets and the Blackberry. A mash up done well.

Love the hair! Remind me of the Moulin Rouge dancers in the Henri de Touse Laetrec paintings. The white dress contrast beautifully with the gritty staircase. She looks both spiritual and earthy.

She is perfect! I love it when girls pile their hair on top of their heads like that. I love the scruffy converse too, they definitely make the look. Without them, the dress would look too "fussy"...

Unfortunately, I do not like this outfit. I guess I'm the only one.

The whole Converse sneeker thing mixed with anything was "clever" at first, but now I'm just bored with it. Another shoe with that pretty dress would suit this attractive girl. Sorry, guess I'm a fuddy-duddy or have just seen it TOO many times.

First off it's just a fine fine photograph. Natural, mostly symmetrical pose and the hair tops it off. The dress and shoes and beads are lovely.

(kind of makes me think of David Tennent's style for Dr. Who).

Maybe it is the illustrator in me, but the very first thing I noticed were her flushed cheeks. That is what makes her look fresh, yes a bit Jane Austen, maybe it was a hot day in the city (hence the top knot). I like the flush.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

Beautiful girl, but unfortunately this image illustrates a common phenomenon these days - young people with faces down, self-absorbed in their digital device, oblivious to the world around them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:21 PM) :

Very care-free! I need to start wearing more dresses.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

Lovely hair and posture...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:42 PM) :

No no no! Anyone who sits on steps in NY in a white dress has no regard for being clean. Dirty shoes too. Yuck. Sorry Scott, most days I love your work!

Anonymous Missaa said ... (2:43 PM) :

I like it! Converse with a dress... I must try this outfit soon!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:13 PM) :

Not into it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:20 PM) :

I do not like the shoes - they look like they are being worn accidentally but they have been chosen carefully to downplay what would have been a twee look. The whole thing looks a bit too contrived for my liking

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:20 PM) :

Blogger The Mini Satorialist said ... (4:07 PM) :

I have a dress just like this one but it is threadbare and from a vintage clothing shop. It has all this lace stitching of flowers and is very fragile. It cost around $200 but was absolutely worth it! I like to pair it up with converse and a tea-towel hat. Voila!

Blogger Zuzolińska said ... (4:09 PM) :

So relaxed and light, I really like her look

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:30 PM) :

agreed chucks & a dress is not a new combo but she pulls it off effortlessly, genuinely; the hair elevates the whole look and takes it a new place.

what I like about this look is you het a huge hit of her personality, an appealing mix of flirty girl and tomboyish. very fun vibe.

Blogger Kathleen said ... (4:39 PM) :

Love the dress, love the hair, love the young woman. But honestly, her shoes must go. They ruin the outfit!
She needs a pair of Frye Harness 12R in Khaki. And no, I don't work for Frye. I realize this blog is about personal style; and I have seen a lot, no tons, of incredible style here. But one has got to know when one is over the top and where to draw the line. Does this self-awarness not constitute great personal style? Go with the boots next time!

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:54 PM) :

Is it just me or does it seem like she has the loveliest blush on in the world? I'm not sure if it's the shadow from her bent head or some other trick of the mind. Either way she's lovely.

I've always appreciated the "don't judge a girl by just her dress" look.
I rock the demure dress and grungy vintage Paul Smith high-tops too during the summer.
It catches the eyes of both men and women. And I LOVE the attention!
I've been known to skip down a street in such an outfit too; it's definitely a skipping-friendly ensemble.

To make sure a white dress doesn't get too dirty sitting on stairs etc-- sit down and get up without sideways movement and also don't move around too much when sitting.

Blogger Lemmi said ... (7:12 AM) :

I love her hair, complexion, posture, I agree that sandals would have ruined the outfit, I adore Scott Schumann's photography. But has no-one noticed that she is normal sized, as opposed to the starved-to-death stick insects that normally seem to feature exclusively in fashion blogs?? It's good to see that 'stylish' doesn't necessitate equal 'thin', and that just normal sized people can also be stylish enough to catch a brilliant photographer's eye.

Blogger Susie said ... (8:11 AM) :

After reading this blog for ages I guess I'm still trying to figure out what the point of it is. I certainly love the photography. Fashion wise - not too often.

I mean what is the point of this, its certainly not "new" or innovative. I see this girl (or girls that look just like her) all over Boston. The dress with converse is what 10 years old at least. I've had mine for well over 10 years now and stopped wearing them ages ago with dresses because everyone does it now.

This isn't about how to pick clothing that looks good on you, I can't 100% tell with her sitting but it appears the length of the dress, when she would be standing wouldn't fall to a place that would be all that flattering for her body type.

The hair is different and I like it. But the look is: been there done that - 10 years ago.

This is a beautiful photograph capturing a summmer morning in London. It has a renaissance feel to it with the curves, the drapes and the marblesque corrugated steps. Thank you.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:53 AM) :

Ok, Converse are comfy and all, but sometimes they're just so unnecessary. The dress is so lovely, her hairdo has some retro' feeling that can never go wrong, but Converse? They just seem so wrong to me. A nice pair of simple brown leather sandals or oxfords would have worked so much much better, in my opinion.

The lady in this photo looks super lovely and as much as I love converse they should not be worn with this dress.

Converse shoes usually make your feet look bigger than they really are, especially if you are wearing a dress, shorts, etc...

Chucks and their kin, PF Flyers, have been around since 1917 and 1937 respectively. Wearing them with ANYTHING isn't cliché, it's classic. Please get over it.
Fashionista snobbery; now that's a cliché that needs to be over.

She's magnificent and perfect . . . and so is this shot!
Thank You

I agree with Samantha: the spirit of old-school Carrie Bradshaw. Lovely.

Love this... she looks wonderfully self-assured and comfortable in the world. Living her life is clearly more important to her than staying pristinely clean or trying to be hipper-than-thou, and she looks great doing it. This photo makes me smile!

am i the only one who thinks she's not old for that dress? i mean, it's already "girlish", then the sneakers and bracelets. but then, she's no teenager- she seems above 25, right?

no, im not an age-gestapo. maybe it's the sleeves, but she looks like an over-aged primary school kid. she's a doll, for sure, but there's something about the upper part of the dress that makes it too girlish rather than feminin, if i make any sense with that. maybe some silver accessories would suit better.

she's a woman, after all, and i prefer "cute women" to "women who look like cute girls".

Those complaining about the dress with Converse look being 'boring' and 'outdated' - perhaps it has actually become classic. The combo lets women like me live our lives comfortably while expressing our contradictions and enjoying dresses.

Blogger Megumi said ... (10:41 PM) :

I don't think this look has been too overdone or too "cliche" as someone put it. I think that it's an easy, young look to pull together that juxtaposes the delicate feminimity of the dress and ratty, scuffed casualness of the Converse shoes. She looks lovely and so much better than half the young women her age strolling around in cut-off jeans and tanks and is a fantastic representation of a girly casual look.
Gorgeous shot Scott!
