Comments on "On the Street......High School Hooky, Sydney"
What a civilised way to play hooky!
I love all the hints of red and brown (mashed with black) in this picture!
The red headscarf to patent black leather gloves...
Red hair, pale skin, freckles... to red scarf!
And both gals are wearing faux fur! :)
classy <3
haha they both have matching smirks
Ha. I used to skip school and go to kawaii. The red scarf as a turban kills me.
bloody oath, these pics are makin me I miss syd even more.. back at kingsford smith soon babes soon
I really love the red hair and the red scarf. She looks really hot!
http://henrineuendorf.com/
Interestingly, they calling it "wagging" over here in Aus. They are indeed looking great....too cool for school!
I love these colors! :D
that looks a lot like my favourite cafe on crown street, surry hills..they have the best coconut cake and the coolest crowd
I think I like the edging of the table most.
Too cool for school ;)
australians, beautiful...... i think you should come to new zealand even more beauties.
I love the naturalness of this photo...you are great
So trendy... withe skin, red accesories.

I love the turban it kills me.
Lovely, Sart, tho I never dressed this way in high school! Haha. :)
coffee , fur, and fashion = a glamorous way to skip school!
http://fashionsmind.blogspot.com/
These two are so ecclectic!
black & red:black hair and red scarf or hat/red hair with black hat...and this deathly pale beauty

Mali cafe Crown St?
Fabulous! Makes me want to dress up and play hooky today too!
I LOVE these two. Skipping school not to smoke on corners but to have a fabulously stylish cup of tea. Adore the fur, the vintage scarf on the red head, the brunette's lipstick, and both of their inspired headwear!
they're both stunning, but the red haired girl just looks exactly how i always wanted to look. good to know that there are people like that out there.
thank you for posting this and making this already very nice day even better
Adorable!! Two schoolgirls having a tea party. Both of these girls are quite beautiful, but for some reason I am drawn to the one on the right... Fantastic photo, Sart.
Part of being a teenager is trying to pull off a look and just not getting it right.
Experimenting is the fun part and as people get older, sadly they lose this. I hope these girls never do!
http://www.lovebizarrevintage.blogspot.com/
Beautiful red hair!
Have a lovely weekend.
xox
these girls are super stylish. I like the kind of gipsie/hobo/hippie/hype style the red haired girl is wearing (BTW, love her hair!)
The hat and scarf totaly make a statement and give her a unique style.
<3
Marine / another fucking fashionista
Why is my favorite part of this picture the adorable table they are sitting at? ha
I love the saturated reds against the rich dark textures. Were they really high schoolers playing hooky? I wonder if they usually wear this offbeat dramatic style, or if it was a special teatime dress-up. I wouldn't have had the courage as a teen to go about like this regularly, but as a fun outing with a trusted friend, sure!
http://cloudofsecrets.blogspot.com
I wish I had had just an nth of these girl's style when I was in high school. or now even!
another fabulous shot, bravo!
Very pretty. I love all of the hues and textures in this photo.
WOW!! I sure didn't dress like this when I was in high school.
Love the look of both girls from the head scarf, hair cut, lipstick, shaggy black coat of one to the hat scarf and coat of the other. :)
love the bear arms and fur on the ladies..seems that they have specially chosen their outerwear to match their hair colour.. hmm.. good coffee break outfit :)

Boy George (R) is on a date with Kiki Dee (L).
Wow! I love the red contrasts.
http://thefashionshake.blogspot.com/
Cute would-be sophisticates. Their self-consciousness is endearing. I'm guessing/hoping that today is the first time they've ever played hooky, and that they just want to know what it feels like so that they can return to school with some great material for poems and maybe songs for acoustic guitar.
There's something painterly about the color and composition of this image. I can't put my finger on it, but I'm reminded of something from Manet or Degas.
www.thesluicebox.com
Oh to be in high school again...at least with these two! I'm older and def don't want to perv but I'd love to hang out with these two! Great looks and color!!
johnbenjaminpritchett.blogspot.com
Don't worry...now they'll never find out!
is it that cold in sydney now to be dressed like that? looks good tho
http://www.kylecuviello.blogspot.com
That brings a little fantasy... to our daily dull life......i wish i could see more of these....to me thats a basic nice look....
This could be a scene from another period. They looked so relaxed, like they do this every week! Beautiful girls, truly.
Beautiful! Finally a redhead. I am loving all the turbans and scarves too. x
www.FashionSnag.com
They're the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid of the Aussie high school set. I'd give a fortune for the creamy skin and the self-confidence. Carry on ladies!
what totally awesome young ladies
I love this...So reminds me of Denise on the Cosby show! Effortless...
This is it! simply magic (i'm trying to imagine the lives they must have... drinking tea elegantly and being bohemian noblesse)
Now I can see why I sell so much vintage clothes to Australia!
So cool! They remind me of Gossip Girl. Maybe AU version! hahahaha.

Such beautiful ladies!!!

http://copiouscouture.blogspot.com
In both cases it's the fur collar matching their hair - this is the thing here! Not only the colour but also the texture. This is what makes their look so special. Headpieces and coolness, radiant red accessories also add to it, I admit. But it's mainly the tipped black hair with matching tipped black fur, and soft red hair+soft fur in reddish-brown colour... Great!
love the girl on the lefts hair and turban!! she beautiful!!! like the smile of the one on the right
http://donotshoeme.blogspot.com/
I love these looks, slightly boho, slightly rock and roll. These are just great!
These girls are in High School?!
I suddenly feel so old and unhip!
Haha.
They're terrific!
~taryn xx
black & brown. you think the trend would have died by now. but i still love.
Wow, those girls are amazingly stylish and unique. Don't think I've seen anything like their looks on these pages. Great stuff.
Wow these are high school girls? They have great styling sense for being so young, wish I had taste this good when I was in high school!
http://ganymedekids.blogspot.com
ok i already commented on this post but those girls just get me so excited. they look exatly how i want to look! both of them. that london/melbourne meets paris...?
ahhh im just blown away
What a funny and adorable photo! They look like they are playing dress up with their grandmothers' most fabulous things.
They're so cool !! :)
Hari,
http://harilay.free.fr
Totally Crown Street for that end of the strip. Anyone from that part of town knows which cafe that is - but I'm not going to drop the K bomb and spoil it for the locals LOL
Pump up the reds a bit, Sart?? The scarf and the turban are popping more than I'd have thought realistic in that light.
I really like Aussie style. Very sassy.
If my friends dressed like this my life would be a much better place.
These ladies are wonderful! I want to know them, or hang out and join in the hooky. Great subject.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE... but am appreciative of my awkward phase in highschool
i can hardly believe this is actually real! it's too perfect. i mean, the leather gloves?! seriously, i love that there are people out there like this. and kind of wish i were one of them.
I love her red turban and of course playing hooky! Great shot!
xx
http://blushingtulips.blogspot.com/
how fun! we used play hooky from school too ...we'd head into the trendy city to be part of 'real' life!
never dressed up so much though...I do hope their teachers arent readers of your blog!!
i don't get it. i've been underwhelmed by every Australian photo, now and from last year. i went to australia recently and thought, what a bore...
One of my favorites ever. Amazing photo. I want to jump into it and roll around in the colours.
xo
Reminds me a little, inevitably, of that film *Heavenly Creatures*... and of being 16, and feeling like anything--absolutely anything--was possible. Imagine how exciting it was for them getting dressed! The giggling in front of mirrors, the slight teetering on their heels (what are their shoes like?), the smell of vintage clothing...
What a great blog. Love all these photographs! Best wishes, go on this project.
I like this, especially the red scarf, so beautiful!
Good old Sydney, wonder which street it was on?
http://evabasford.blogspot.com/
nice smiles
That hair...
So incredibly beautiful. The red hair is gorgeous
too cool for school.
but looks good!
too cool for school.
but looks nice!"
My how things have changed. Imagine getting busted for playing hooky 'cause your pic showed up on the net.
How wonderfully brave...both playing hookey and dressing so fabulously while doing it! Love the scarf and the monkey fur jacket!
Obviously I like the girl on the left even thou the girl on the right is so beautiful just got a litttle lost in all those statements. Edit, girls, edit!
how beautiful they look!
Great colors. I love it too!
Well, I never thought i'd see someone I know on this site...
Just absolutely sublime.
I'm loving the 70s bohemian rock vibe of all these pictures. You're not stopping by Melbourne by any chance are you? (Fingers and toes being majorly majorly crossed)
My friend and I are beyond major fans and have been desperately trying (and missing) to track you and Garance down on your pitstops Down Under :)
the purple lipstick!
I hope we can also dress up this way here in the Philippines
The girl on the right has such a charming little smirk on her face. I really love that her face isn't adorned with much makeup, but she has such a powerful image to begin with that she doesn't need it.
-Robyn
heehee, nice contrast between their ragamuffin look and the delicate teacups.
I love how the wispy ends of her hair that peeps out of her turban match the wispy ends of her fur coat! But I live in sydney and I've never seen anyone jig school with such style and class!
to the comment three or so above mine, i know them too, they go to my school and it is nice to see them on here, but... it takes some of the mystery away, the ability to draw your own conclusions and to make up your own story behind their lives when you already know theirs.
but, yes, they are always like that, and yes, i envy them immensely.
Love her Irish looks. Go Redheads!
i love you in australia! come back and visit us soon
I absolutely wish I was the girl on the right.
this is just so perfect
Goodness these young women are carbon copies of the Brighton art school girls of 30 plus years ago. I guess that say a lot for the timelessness of boho chic.
C'mon, that's just rich kids dressing up. Nothing too interesting. What are the West African, the Pacific Islanders, the feisty Islamic girls wearing? That's where you will find someone who really knocks your socks off in a vast and dynamic town like Sydney.
I love the girl on the left with the fur and turban and cup of tea.
Miss B xx
http://agirlastyle.wordpress.com/
Love this...
Especially the redhead. Scarf and hat!
I have to be honest here. Mr Sartorialist takes alright photos but they're not Degas...
Amazing shot!!!
lovely outfits!
nice faces !
Two trendy smirk-ers looking good!
Love x
My best friend and I used to play hooky a little too often. But we were really such good kids, we practically did cut school just to have tea! We would go to the public library or back to my house to choreograph ballet! Ha!
They're not drinking tea, they're drinking cappucino. They just have tea posture and expressions.
I really like how this picture has a lovely contrast. Strong on the left and soft on the right! But their both really original in their tastes. Love their beautiful gazes too, their eyes are statements :)
oh that beautiful red hair! I do love a redhead. It's funny how color coordinated they are too... I really enjoy your photos of friends or couples to see how their looks play off one another's. Another lovely shot :)
Amazing!!! ;)
Did not even know how styling people were in Sydney... It is a great pic, they look like having a good time. And, I loved the red head girl, beautiful one!
The woman's red turban paired with the feather cape reminds me of the musical Chicago.
Beautiful photograph, I'd love to draw that.
love the read head - she is so interesting
Marika
and check out my new project - Story of my Clothes
They are super-fab (and the photo itself is wonderful, too). They're living reminders of why the elements of style matter--we can create, and re-create, ourselves, at least visually, by ruffling through the closet. And for many of us, playing with style is or was a crucial first step in becoming the people we wanted to be--we could actually SEE ourselves in a new light. Since clothes can be changed and makeup washed off, we could safely take that self for a "test drive" by going out--perhaps for a cup of tea in a cool cafe. :) And, over time, we could build the courage to make that self an ongoing reality.
Though I hope they don't ditch too much school--being smart and well-read makes on even more fabulous...
That's a stunning look. So gorgeous both of them.
So many clashing reds in this picture but boy do they work.
I've been seeing turbans everywhere. It must be because of that Paris Vogue editorial. You know the one with Freja Beha and Lara Stone. The one with Daria Werbowy on the cover in that Prada chandelier dress. Was that Jan., Feb. or March, maybe?
Lovely, lovely photo. And what a stylish way to play hooky.
fantastic red hair it's time this had a moment and the time is now love this colouring.
Nice texture there on the left. PVC(?) gloves with that delicious, wispy top.
Red scarf on the right is so nice, too.

www.stitchesfabricandsoul.com
it looks as if the girls dressed to compliment each other's outfit :D
To the girl with the rosy hair, that delightful hat you have perched on your head...did you by chance find that at Chingalings?- or Gaslight? or Lo bar?- or Oxford Arts- or simply on the bustle of the nights streets of Surry Hills perhaps last weekend? I seem to have misplaced mine in the confusion of the said nights events. Should it be mine, and should you wish to return it, I will be at Kawa everyday at 4 15 to 4 30 awaiting our encounter. Please note, a warm reward will be offered for your lovely compliance.
Thank you,
Oliver
for me the girl on the right seems like she's drowning in the clothes, it's a great outfit, but her face kind of fades away.
i love a redhead who is brave enough to wear red. love the textures on both girls and the leather gloves...terrific!
The word eclectic is over used but it describes these girls' look perfectly. Love it
they look regal.
+ i have an immense fascination with rangas(what we call redheads)
and shes insanely hot :)
http://www.vader101.tumblr.com
I wish I looked as good as that when I skipped class, hah!
Love these buddy pics!
They look beautifully autumnal.
cool kids. x
I adore both!!! they look sooo cute!! =)! great outfit! xoxo
Love everything about this.
The red hair. The hat. The furs. The strong lipstick...
http://fabulouslifeofdiogotorres.blogspot.com/
What a great blog. Love all these photographs! B
I love how the red hair girl has a pretty scarf and a fur jacket with nice tights... all very stylish going together...
Love the moment you captured...
They both look pretty sophisticated, although the girl with the turban is looking like she's trying too hard. I still love her outfit. The redhaired girl is another story. I think she's got the right attitude, she seems pretty laidback and I love how the red scarf around her neck clashes with her hair and her skin tone. I still hope to get my photo taken by you some time in the future :)
They are great !
I love the girl with the red hair's style...that's pretty much exactly how I've always wanted to look, except she pulls it off beautifully and I've never had the guts to try.
I wish I was friends with these two!
Having had the chance to know them personally through school, I can confidently say that they really are lovely girls. You can only judge what you see, so spare any criticism please. They are wonderful, daring, beautiful girls, and I'm ecstatic that they're receiving the recognition they deserve for their great taste ♥
¡¡amazing picture!!!
http://becariadelamoda.wordpress.com/
They both look so wicked in this.
Their expressions are so cool and devious. Perfect contrast from their playful clothes. Also love the red hair!
divine
like a sarcastic Renoir
They've got great style, and their fashion sense is far beyond their age. A bit on the mature side though, I wouldn't have known that they were teenagers.
I love the lip colour on the left!

It's fun to read comments from people who know these girls personally, and to hear that they *do* carry off their dramatic looks all the time, and that they're cool people inside too.
I've sometimes wondered why we don't see comments from the Sartorialist's subjects themselves more often, or people who know them. Granted, I might have missed a lot. I don't always have the time to read through the dozens upon dozens of comments his entries earn -- just for the photos that really really interest me, like this one.
http://cloudofsecrets.blogspot.com
just absolutely amazing.
What a wonderful photo! Full of texture, colour, and with those smirks - a sense of mischief. Looks like it beats sitting in class to me!
Dear Oliver,
I am very sorry to tell that I bought my hat from a jumble sale last year some time. I don't think it's the one that you are in search of.
Good luck finding it though, I really hope it makes it's way back to you someday!
- The girl with the rosy hair
It's wagging here in Australia- and they are not Schoolies, but Uni of COFA students. All schools in Aust have a school uniform
is that rachel griffiths little sister? its all very cute and not very innocent! wagging or on a film set?
These girls are amazing, especially the one in the left!
i know these girls! when we were in year 7 we used to always envy everything they wore, picking out our favourite things that they were wearing :)
surry hills.. OH of COURSE!
when the 20's meets the 70's?
http://bulbizar.blogspot.com/
I'm thinking newtown school of the performing arts?
they look fantastic, though the scarf as headband thing has been overdone. Even so, i wish i'd been that stylish when i was in high school. I was a good nerd though, so i don't think i ever skipped it.
I love this soooo much with the attitude and mash up of styles. In the '80s I wagged school in a hobble skirt, a 1940's jacket and heels and a beehive. Teemed with chewed finger nails of course.
Elaine
they're actually in yr12 and lovely lovely people
Well played! Love the red "turban", I have to try that sometime.
- Silje
I really do love their stlye and the picutre but really its almost 30 degrees in Sydney! You still have to dress seasonly appropriate. It just shows them as being desperate to copy the winter London style. Hello Brick Lane.
omg i love that cafe; live right across the road from it! best "mom's banana coconut bread" and brownies in sydney! such a gem! hope you sat down for a feed and some quality brew!
wow. totally amazing. I love their young indifference. the red hair and the red scarf. I bet its ALL vintage except for the hosiery. love.
try-ing-too-hard? anyone? good god, do we all have to look like the same senily-delinquencial parisian mamie? i'm pretty sure that mamie is the only person that can and should rock this look.
i'm not super-conservative or anything, but it looks as though these young ladies have a bit of an affectation, and not in a wonderful way. just in a affluent-teen "rebel" way. last time i checked, that wasn't fashionable, just trendy.
of course, what do i know? when i played hooky, i sat in the hills and smoked purloined players.
30 degrees in Sydney? It's Autumn down here. I wore a coat and scarf to work this morning. Last week was chilly - those girls are dressed fine for the weather.
classy:D
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
God I love red headed women. I only wish I could find them. They are so sneaky haha. Love the hat.
The girl on the right, with the black hat, has gorgeous hair - beautiful colour. Not digging the fake fur though.
Ahhh the joys of being Gen Y (or is it Z?)!
Interesting, but rather pretentious in my opinion
Very nice! Are you sure they arent modeling for you?
Check your credit
Can I just steal her hair?
awww man! these are cool chics!
why do people think they're dressed up? plenty of people i know in melbourne like this every day. it's really nice! i'm pretty jealous that they could buy such lovely clothes though. most of us can't afford such luxurious furs and things! but nonetheless, lovely.
XD i would love to wag off school for a day with a girlfriend - get dressed up like we live in the 1920s or whatever the hell it is and strut around town like nobodies business XD <3
These girls are just so pretty. I just bought your book yesterday and it is fabulous, I am a photographer too but have no clue about fashion coming from Cornwall in England where we mostly all skank around in sloppy joe's and go to the supermarket in PJs Hahaa, your work has inspired me .. Love it xx
These girs are really pretty. I just bought your book yesterday, I am a photographer too however I have no clue regarding fashion coming from Cornwall in SW England, here most of us walk round in sloppy joe's and go to the supermarket in PJs Hahaa. Your work has seriously inspired me. Love it xx
Oh that cherry lips that are so appealing. Black all the way including her hair and then kill it with those lipstics. I got how it works now, thanks.
Well, they both look very suave and sophisticated and not at all like high school girls skipping school! Beautiful girls!
On the Street......High School Hooky, Sydney <----that's what i was looking for
