I love all the hints of red and brown (mashed with black) in this picture!
The red headscarf to patent black leather gloves...
Red hair, pale skin, freckles... to red scarf!
And both gals are wearing faux fur! :)

Anonymous Willa said ... (8:21 AM) :

I LOVE these two. Skipping school not to smoke on corners but to have a fabulously stylish cup of tea. Adore the fur, the vintage scarf on the red head, the brunette's lipstick, and both of their inspired headwear!

Blogger EML said ... (8:23 AM) :

they're both stunning, but the red haired girl just looks exactly how i always wanted to look. good to know that there are people like that out there.

Adorable!! Two schoolgirls having a tea party. Both of these girls are quite beautiful, but for some reason I am drawn to the one on the right... Fantastic photo, Sart.

Blogger Love Bizarre said ... (8:43 AM) :

Part of being a teenager is trying to pull off a look and just not getting it right.
Experimenting is the fun part and as people get older, sadly they lose this. I hope these girls never do!

Anonymous Dana said ... (9:02 AM) :

Why is my favorite part of this picture the adorable table they are sitting at? ha

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:02 AM) :

I love the saturated reds against the rich dark textures. Were they really high schoolers playing hooky? I wonder if they usually wear this offbeat dramatic style, or if it was a special teatime dress-up. I wouldn't have had the courage as a teen to go about like this regularly, but as a fun outing with a trusted friend, sure!

Anonymous Susan said ... (9:11 AM) :

WOW!! I sure didn't dress like this when I was in high school.

Love the look of both girls from the head scarf, hair cut, lipstick, shaggy black coat of one to the hat scarf and coat of the other. :)

Anonymous mabelmabel said ... (10:22 AM) :

Cute would-be sophisticates. Their self-consciousness is endearing. I'm guessing/hoping that today is the first time they've ever played hooky, and that they just want to know what it feels like so that they can return to school with some great material for poems and maybe songs for acoustic guitar.

Blogger The Sluice Box said ... (10:29 AM) :

There's something painterly about the color and composition of this image. I can't put my finger on it, but I'm reminded of something from Manet or Degas.

Blogger Kérj tanácsot said ... (1:05 PM) :

In both cases it's the fur collar matching their hair - this is the thing here! Not only the colour but also the texture. This is what makes their look so special. Headpieces and coolness, radiant red accessories also add to it, I admit. But it's mainly the tipped black hair with matching tipped black fur, and soft red hair+soft fur in reddish-brown colour... Great!

Totally Crown Street for that end of the strip. Anyone from that part of town knows which cafe that is - but I'm not going to drop the K bomb and spoil it for the locals LOL

Pump up the reds a bit, Sart?? The scarf and the turban are popping more than I'd have thought realistic in that light.

Reminds me a little, inevitably, of that film *Heavenly Creatures*... and of being 16, and feeling like anything--absolutely anything--was possible. Imagine how exciting it was for them getting dressed! The giggling in front of mirrors, the slight teetering on their heels (what are their shoes like?), the smell of vintage clothing...

heehee, nice contrast between their ragamuffin look and the delicate teacups.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:07 AM) :

I love how the wispy ends of her hair that peeps out of her turban match the wispy ends of her fur coat! But I live in sydney and I've never seen anyone jig school with such style and class!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:46 AM) :

to the comment three or so above mine, i know them too, they go to my school and it is nice to see them on here, but... it takes some of the mystery away, the ability to draw your own conclusions and to make up your own story behind their lives when you already know theirs.

but, yes, they are always like that, and yes, i envy them immensely.

Goodness these young women are carbon copies of the Brighton art school girls of 30 plus years ago. I guess that say a lot for the timelessness of boho chic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:48 AM) :

C'mon, that's just rich kids dressing up. Nothing too interesting. What are the West African, the Pacific Islanders, the feisty Islamic girls wearing? That's where you will find someone who really knocks your socks off in a vast and dynamic town like Sydney.

My best friend and I used to play hooky a little too often. But we were really such good kids, we practically did cut school just to have tea! We would go to the public library or back to my house to choreograph ballet! Ha!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:35 AM) :

They're not drinking tea, they're drinking cappucino. They just have tea posture and expressions.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:27 PM) :

They are super-fab (and the photo itself is wonderful, too). They're living reminders of why the elements of style matter--we can create, and re-create, ourselves, at least visually, by ruffling through the closet. And for many of us, playing with style is or was a crucial first step in becoming the people we wanted to be--we could actually SEE ourselves in a new light. Since clothes can be changed and makeup washed off, we could safely take that self for a "test drive" by going out--perhaps for a cup of tea in a cool cafe. :) And, over time, we could build the courage to make that self an ongoing reality.

Though I hope they don't ditch too much school--being smart and well-read makes on even more fabulous...

Anonymous gih said ... (4:22 PM) :

That's a stunning look. So gorgeous both of them.

Anonymous Magsli said ... (5:16 PM) :

So many clashing reds in this picture but boy do they work.

Blogger Tiara said ... (5:41 PM) :

I've been seeing turbans everywhere. It must be because of that Paris Vogue editorial. You know the one with Freja Beha and Lara Stone. The one with Daria Werbowy on the cover in that Prada chandelier dress. Was that Jan., Feb. or March, maybe?

Lovely, lovely photo. And what a stylish way to play hooky.

To the girl with the rosy hair, that delightful hat you have perched on your head...did you by chance find that at Chingalings?- or Gaslight? or Lo bar?- or Oxford Arts- or simply on the bustle of the nights streets of Surry Hills perhaps last weekend? I seem to have misplaced mine in the confusion of the said nights events. Should it be mine, and should you wish to return it, I will be at Kawa everyday at 4 15 to 4 30 awaiting our encounter. Please note, a warm reward will be offered for your lovely compliance.

Thank you,

It's fun to read comments from people who know these girls personally, and to hear that they *do* carry off their dramatic looks all the time, and that they're cool people inside too.

I've sometimes wondered why we don't see comments from the Sartorialist's subjects themselves more often, or people who know them. Granted, I might have missed a lot. I don't always have the time to read through the dozens upon dozens of comments his entries earn -- just for the photos that really really interest me, like this one.

I'm thinking newtown school of the performing arts?

they look fantastic, though the scarf as headband thing has been overdone. Even so, i wish i'd been that stylish when i was in high school. I was a good nerd though, so i don't think i ever skipped it.

I love this soooo much with the attitude and mash up of styles. In the '80s I wagged school in a hobble skirt, a 1940's jacket and heels and a beehive. Teemed with chewed finger nails of course.

I really do love their stlye and the picutre but really its almost 30 degrees in Sydney! You still have to dress seasonly appropriate. It just shows them as being desperate to copy the winter London style. Hello Brick Lane.

omg i love that cafe; live right across the road from it! best "mom's banana coconut bread" and brownies in sydney! such a gem! hope you sat down for a feed and some quality brew!

try-ing-too-hard? anyone? good god, do we all have to look like the same senily-delinquencial parisian mamie? i'm pretty sure that mamie is the only person that can and should rock this look.

i'm not super-conservative or anything, but it looks as though these young ladies have a bit of an affectation, and not in a wonderful way. just in a affluent-teen "rebel" way. last time i checked, that wasn't fashionable, just trendy.

of course, what do i know? when i played hooky, i sat in the hills and smoked purloined players.

30 degrees in Sydney? It's Autumn down here. I wore a coat and scarf to work this morning. Last week was chilly - those girls are dressed fine for the weather.

God I love red headed women. I only wish I could find them. They are so sneaky haha. Love the hat.

The girl on the right, with the black hat, has gorgeous hair - beautiful colour. Not digging the fake fur though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 AM) :

why do people think they're dressed up? plenty of people i know in melbourne like this every day. it's really nice! i'm pretty jealous that they could buy such lovely clothes though. most of us can't afford such luxurious furs and things! but nonetheless, lovely.

Oh that cherry lips that are so appealing. Black all the way including her hair and then kill it with those lipstics. I got how it works now, thanks.
