Majorca, Vintage Photo Contest

I don´t know her, I just now that this picture has taken in my favourite hotel in Majorca, the Formentor. It was first opened in 1929, and about five years later this pic was taken.

I find it most inspiring, not only because of her outfit, but because of the shape her body draws against the background. Like you´ve showed us in your shots, most of the times it´s not about the clothes, but of the attitude, and I think this is a clear example of it.

Best regards,

María José
Madrid, Spain

Hi, the Formentor Hotel is placed in Mallorca, not Majorca. It is a beautiful island in Spain. http://www.barcelo.com/BarceloHotels/es-ES/Hotels/Spain/Majorca/Formentor/Home

Anonymous AmandaLeighOC said ... (9:04 AM) :

Incredibly textural. imparts dimension wonderfully. (does that make sense in the context of photography?).

Anonymous Maija said ... (9:21 AM) :

Gorgeous. My favourite of the oldies so far. I find that the picture has an air of timeless elegance. One could put on those clothes today and be stylish anywhere. Once again, a beautiful short cut on a lady. Just wonderful.

Blogger SaraKateSwan said ... (9:40 AM) :

I love this image! She would look perfectly in style if she were walking the streets today.

The outfit is just perfect for Mallorca.

Anonymous Lisa said ... (10:20 AM) :

effortless style we all dream to have

Anonymous Consa said ... (10:36 AM) :

This just keeps getting better and better!

I hope you do not feel obligated to do anything comprehensive with the photos you have accumulated. But I do hope you are up to something.
Sorting them into a light book with original comments? - like a small adventure through time and space; or placing pictures in parallel with contemporary allusions? Ah, the possibilities.

I am excited so many people have come along with your invitation!
I am hungry for further posts.

What an incredible shot! I really love the composition. The wicker chair in the foreground, the way the plants in the mid ground dissolve to nothing...Its like a mix between photography and painting. Very beautiful. Thanks, Maria!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:09 AM) :

I´ve just read that the hotel is where Grace Kelly spent her honey moon! Jane Birkin, Audrey Hepburn, Charles Chaplin, Gary Cooper... and many more also went there for their holidays!

Blogger Rufo said ... (11:11 AM) :

She was a queen, after all.

Blogger Couture Coco said ... (11:46 AM) :

STUNNING! Very Coco Chanel and yet the lady has created a feel all her own.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:54 AM) :

Incredibly current and timeless! It could be worn today without people thinking weird.

Blogger Some Like it Vintage.com said ... (12:40 PM) :

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:50 PM) :

I think this maybe the coolest photo I have ever seen. And if it doesn't prove once and for all that real style is timeless then I don't know what will!

Blogger isabel said ... (12:57 PM) :

Increiblemente elegante y mediterránea.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:11 PM) :

Great pic!! lOVE IT!

But it's MALLORCA, not majorca PLEASEEEEEE!!

;)

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:16 PM) :

It is eyebrow-raising to preface a photo introduction with "I don't know her" and then sign it with the subject's name.

Blogger Nedda Ebo said ... (2:26 PM) :

Those are amazing pants I love the way they flow. And her beret completes it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:45 PM) :

I think this is a wonderful photo and I agree I would love to have these items in my wardrobe, but am I the only one for whom the name "Olive oil" came to mind? You know Popeye's girlfriend. No disrespect intended, but she has most of her features, even her stance.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

Wow. This photo is stunning. I think this is the perfect summer uniform. Stripes on top, white on bottom, splashes of color or details (like the little polka dots and beret). Beautiful.

For years I searched for a wide leg white pant JUST LIKE THESE, sits high on the waist, drops to a lovely drape down the leg. This whole outfit is so elegant, timeless yet so NOW. We can't find a pant made out of that rayon they used back then, even her polka dot hankie just gives it her personality. If it was I in this outfit, I'd wear it with clean white converse Chuck Taylors or Jack Purcells but even her perfect white oxfords work so well.

Blogger Casey said ... (4:01 PM) :

God how I love this shot--very Armani-esque as well as Chanel. That little polka dot scarf is such a perfect touch. Love, love, love.

Blogger Perlitamelenas said ... (6:01 PM) :

Lovely pic, she was so glamourous...

Blogger Passport Stamps said ... (6:50 PM) :

Blogger caseylarae said ... (8:14 PM) :

an essence of Lillian Bassman in the attitude, feminity and soft focus of the photo. love it.

Blogger *sunday* said ... (8:47 PM) :

Blogger Anastasia said ... (10:10 PM) :

Blogger davidikus said ... (8:11 AM) :

Great picture ! Everything is perfect : the outfit, the composition, the use of the depth-of-field...

It's also interesting to see how body shapes have changed...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:52 AM) :

Between the beret and that little pocket square she is so very "ever so!"

Blogger Julia, the Thanksgiving Girl said ... (1:12 PM) :

The attitude, definately.

Anonymous Riima said ... (3:01 AM) :

I Just love the body language, the beret and flappers. There is some amateur vibe in the gesture. Love whites though can't maintain that well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:22 PM) :

I couldn't love those slacks any more than I do. Just gorgeous. The whole photograph is wonderful -the location, the outfit, the composition. Other than her looking slightly irritated, but, hey I look irritated in a lot a photos.........

Anonymous Érica said ... (5:58 PM) :

This is so Chanel! Comfort and simplicity, which were registered trademark of Coco, is fully present in this outfit. I Lloved it!
