In the Hotel Room Refrigerator, Tokyo

After having arrived in Tokyo from New York, it's 2:45AM and I can't sleep.
Already drank the can of Coke that was in the mini-bar and all that's left is Pocari Sweat.

Pocari Sweat???

Everything but the name is written in Japanese.
As you know, I am American and I like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible. I can only hope that the sweat in this drink is organic and not artificially flavored sweat.

i can't wait for your other engrish posts. HEEHEEHEEEEE!!!!!

Blogger ELY said ... (2:54 PM) :

pocari sweat is like the japanese gatorade without the fruity flavor.

oishii!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:54 PM) :

Pocari Sweat is also pretty common in South Korea. It is a sports drink, kind of like Gatorade. Probably won't kill you.

Blogger Beverly said ... (2:56 PM) :

you can get this drink in any Japanese super Market in New York, as an Asian, I have that when i grow up. it's like gatorade!

Blogger margarida said ... (2:56 PM) :

"I am American and I like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible."
You're sweet in your intents; hope a lot of us will really follow them. :)
And your taste is wonderful. Even when some stuff strikes us as quite 'mad', they're just great!
Wonderful blog!
(I borowed one vintage photo the other day, to mention your blog, hope you don't sue me!! - it's another american 'tradition')
:)
Iknow you wont...
All the best and enjoy your travelling - we surely do!!!!!!
Take care, though...

Anonymous mr abbott said ... (2:58 PM) :

love pocari sweat, it's got electrolytes , good for jet lag

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

I totally forgot about pocari sweat until your post! I LOVED that stuff when I was in japan; it is truly great for beating dehydration in the summer. Basically, its Japanese gatorade (milder, less sugary, and without most of the sports pretensions).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

Oh...Scott...

It's adorable that you are freaked out by the drink. My ex visited me in Korea years ago and he refused to even sample Pocari Sweat, saying the the name totally grossed him out.

It's a sports drink. Once you get used to it, it kind of grows on you. I hope you enjoy Tokyo!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:01 PM) :

it's a japanese energy drink.

Blogger CW said ... (3:01 PM) :

It is not organic. Try it. Websearch it. :-D

Blogger gloryofathena said ... (3:02 PM) :

wayyy better than gatorade
poorly named.

Anonymous ana said ... (3:03 PM) :

omg, r u kidding, pocary sweet is isotonic drink, produced by an indonesian pharmaceutical company and it will only do you good. bottoms up :)

Blogger Mango Projects said ... (3:03 PM) :

Hello Scott, this is America version of Gatorade. Feel safe to drink, no sweat.

Blogger Rebekah said ... (3:05 PM) :

Too funny! Had to Google that for sure! Wikipedia comes through in a pinch.

Anonymous Joi said ... (3:05 PM) :

I grew up drinking this drink. The ingredient listed are water, sugar, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium lactate, magnesium carbonate and flavor. It tastes so good after a nice run. You should try it, Scott :)

Blogger JessS said ... (3:09 PM) :

I love Pocari Sweat... granted, I grew up in Asia. Anyhow, it's an acquired taste, you just need to adjust your taste buds slightly. Hope you get a chance to visit the delicious fish market.

Blogger Yoko said ... (3:10 PM) :

I was raised on Pocari! It has a mild grapefruit-ish taste. Non-carbonated. Can be used as a sports drink, but is delicious enough to be an all-purpose beverage (which is how most Japanese use it). Try it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:15 PM) :

i love pocari sweat! don't let the name fool you - it's the best thirst quencher!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:17 PM) :

I'm surprised you've never seen it before, they definitely have it in a lot of the ny bodegas.

Blogger DQM said ... (3:18 PM) :

Pocari Sweat tastes like... Pocari Sweat! I like it actually, it's not as sweet as other sports drinks. If you want to get really freaked out go to a 7-11, they are incredibly overlit or a Panchiko (sp) arcade which is just hell on earth.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:22 PM) :

as an american i tried it when i was visiting south korea. product is good and refreshing but they would certainly need to rebrand if they came to the US.

Anonymous Karen Kristian said ... (3:27 PM) :

As an American who unusually wants to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible - Tokyo is the perfect place for you.

Try the Pocari Sweat! It's delicious.

Also try to find Bohemian (original to sister in Nolita). Delicious. Fujimama's (in Harajuku, where I'm sure you'll spend a lot of time) is a great casual spot as well.

Also, spend a lot of time in Omotesando. Omotesando Hills would make an amazing photo entry.

Anxiously following your travels! You are making me homesick.

Xoxo,

Hhhmmm... weather that's "sweat" as in "tastes like..." or "sweat" as in "makes you..." or simply a misspelling of "sweet" I don't know if I'd risk it.
Ah, what the hell! Let us know how it goes!

I prefer Calpis. It is made from 100% organic pis.

Anonymous sachy said ... (3:43 PM) :

In Japan, its common to drink Pokari Sweat when you are sick. The ingredients re the same as drip infusion.
It good for you when you are tired because it helps you recover faster.

Anonymous Plath said ... (3:45 PM) :

What are you doing in Asia. Stupid question, probably a photo shoot. But I guess it's not that often you post from Asia. Did the stupid european situation make you abandon Europe?

Blogger SabinePsynopsis said ... (3:46 PM) :

Go for it, Scott! I love an adventure (taken by others) - and please report back. Where's the melatonin when you need it, mmh?

Anonymous LOL at this post said ... (3:57 PM) :

AH YES, because the Coke was healthy and natural, right?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:02 PM) :

Apparently it was developed by the same people who make IV fluids. It's great to drink when you are hungover or sick because it replenishes your electrolytes. Plus the taste is nice and mild unlike Gatorade.

Blogger Karen said ... (4:02 PM) :

Haha! Yeah, Pocari is one of the more popular Japanese sports drinks that are sold in a lot of Asian supermarkets in the US. I personally prefer 'Aquarius' and drank that ALL the time when I was in Japan. So excited to see what either photos you take on your trip!

Blogger Eternal Worrier said ... (4:08 PM) :

LOL! That's great! I have a coffee cup from living in japan that gives me a beautiful cup of coffee lol

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:59 PM) :

Pocari Sweat doesn't have anything to do with the taste or the flavor of the drink. (Japanese brands and ads are often based on the way English words look, not what they mean). Thus, the drink company must have liked the way Pocari Sweat looked on the can and in their ads (although I can't imagine why!).

P.S. I love your blog and book! Such great inspiration!

Blogger Bell said ... (6:37 PM) :

Scott you are so corny, it makes you think that the American Drinks are better than the Japanese?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:42 PM) :

i would just like to clarify if that was supposed to be sarcasm - "i am american and i like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible" - i don't know how any american could look down on another culture and "hope that the sweat in this drink is organic and not artificially flavored sweat" - considering the american diet, perhaps recently there has been a shift, however, it is to attempt to rectify the garbage that we as north americans have been consuming - just dont' appreciate looking on a culture, claiming to be 'better'... many nations' obesity rates rise as a result of following a 'north american diet' - if it was supposedt ob e sarcastic, then i am an idiot - apologies.

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:44 PM) :

Poccari Sweat is a sports drink. It's sort of fizzy, and tastes a little like ginger ale. I'm not too fond of it.

And, just as a warning, most of what you get in Japan is artificially flavored.

Of course, if you're really thirst, you can go to any of the vending machines that are all over the city. My favorite drink is the kirin milk tea.

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:46 PM) :

"As you know, I am American and I like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible."

as you know, i am new yorker and I like......sounds better ;-)

i love your shots btw :-)

Anonymous emily said ... (6:54 PM) :

pocari sweat is fantastic! it's like grapefruit gatorade.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:02 PM) :

I hear that it's made from the sweat of the small furry blind Pocari.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:26 PM) :

I'm pretty sure you know what Pocari Sweat is after fifty comments telling you the same information. The only thing that confuses me is that, after mentioning the finished can of Coke, you are worrying about your "American" ways of eating "as healthily and as naturally as possible." As much as I enjoy your blog and photos, that statement is a bit insensitive, not to mention ironic...

Blogger Claire said ... (7:41 PM) :

i saw that drink at the japanese airport and thought it had a weird name too

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (7:50 PM) :

for Anon 6:42
yes, you are an idiot....I asked if it was made from artificial sweat. Doesn't that sound like a little bit of a joke?

I have realized that subtle humor doesn't work on a blog that is read by people from so many different cultures.

Everyone is sooooo ready to jump on anything that could possibly be offensive that all humor is lost.

Don't let the internet kill humor...life is fun if you let it be.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:57 PM) :

Ack - I'm having flashbacks to years of living in Indonesia! How I miss you Pocari Sweat! Enjoy all the little cultural differences. They are endlessly fascinating and amusing with an open mind.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:00 PM) :

Dear Scott,

We call for an investigation into the unconscionable actions of the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Incorporated Company. The daily killing of millions of adorable Pocari to produce the Pocari Sweat drink is extremely thoughtless.

Elaine

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:09 PM) :

Try it! Its so good. And make sure you try Aquarius as well - I lived off it as a 16 year old getting through the Japanese summer.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:20 PM) :

More importantly.. did you try it?

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (8:21 PM) :

for Elaine 8:00 PM
Elaine, the Pocari are not killed for their precious sweat but actually forced to endure long treadmill running sessions while wearing tiny fur coats. This way they sweat at maximum capacity for our drinking enjoyment!

Yum !.....Sweaty!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:32 PM) :

When I lived in Japan I was running with a friend and she mentioned she didn't like to run in summer because of "pocari"...She kept repeating it because I wasn't getting it. Pocari. You know --pant, pant--Pocari.
After a swift dramatization on her part I finally realized that she meant "sweat", but had forgotten which word--"pocari" or "sweat"--meant sweat in English.
As if Pocari Sweat weren't endearing enough in its own way, I will never see a can or bottle and not smile to myself!
Have a blast in Japan.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 AM) :

Actually, Pocari tastes like sweat. It's salty....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:08 AM) :

I really hope your statement about the American diet was meant to be sarcastic. Most Japanese food is very healthy, delicious, and delicate in taste depending on what regions and places you dine in. Pocari sweat is a taste that is probably going to be unfamiliar and maybe a bit unusual to foreigners. But I like it and maybe you will too? I do not know what sort of preconceived ideas you have of Japan, but I think a clean slate free of stereotypes will make travelling Japan a really exceptional and exciting experience.

Please do not make the mistake of portraying Japan like what the movie "Lost in Translation" did - my philosophy whenever I travel is "When in Rome..."

I do not mean any of what I say with negativity, I just find as an Asian American that there are some aspects still lingering in the 21st century that need to be rectified in terms of how Asians are portrayed.

I am a fan of your blog and read it regularly! This is my first comment and i hope you have a wonderful time in Japan!

The name of the product is very much "Japanese English" take a look at other products with english names and you will know what i mean. Some are rather cute.

If a new shop is opening, you will see in Japan -

"1 July Open"

And not "Opening on 1 July".

As European I tell you: We've always thought here you Americans are sadly unhealthy and really don't eat as well as you should. One example: when the Katrina tragedy happened, what food they gave to the victims? Candy, sweets, cheese, carbonated drinks, etc... No fruit, no vegetables, no juice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:13 AM) :

Hi Scott, congrats for your blog that I follow on a regular basis.

No offence but something made me smile in your post. It’s probably due to two very unlikely correlations:

1/ Do you consider a can of Coke as something healthy and natural?
2/ Do you see a correlation between being American and having a healthy diet/lifestyle? Because if we look at the average population, this correlation is most unlikely (http://www.naturalnews.com/001109.html).

I've had pocari sweat (so many funny names for things) and didn't like it much but there are so many delicious foods in Japan as well. Have a great time. Boy, I envy you and your glamorous adventures! Thank you for sharing. Don't eat nato! Haha.

Hi Beautiful. You will discover another option for quenching your thirst other tha Calpis, and my favourite Bikkle! Love it! Drink it! I spent two weeks cycling Tokyo and some of the best parts were stopping at the vending machines giggling at the selection... xxx

Actually by the way I have just remembered this, one guy we met in Kyushu said 'oh you must go to bla de bla bla' so we went and the only thing in this fishing village on this island called Naoshima was a vending machine with Ashahi and Pocari! So of course we opted for the Asahi...and the instant noodle as there was not a cafe in sight...priceless! I sooo love Japan I wanna go back!

pocari sweat is great stuff. it's the perfect thing for a long day of subways, giant crowds and people watching.

if you get a chance and aren't afraid of street food you should try okonomiyaki. it's kind of like a pancake with shredded cabbage in it. it's delicious. you might only be able to find it in restaurants in tokyo, but if you happen to find your way to osaka there are stalls in the food market that will blow your mind.

i hope you have a great time.

Yeah, Sart, I had the same problem with Pocari Sweat. After touring the ancient Korean palaces in Seoul once, I borke down and dranks some, and it really it the spot in spite of its name. I grew to appreciate cultural differences in all my travels while especially in Korea. That can looks tiny by the way.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:41 AM) :

... as healthily and as naturally as possible...
...already drank the can of Coke...
Come on! Coke is healthy and natural?
We know... you are American.

Blogger stuff sonia love said ... (12:51 PM) :

yeah right?

Blogger D said ... (1:19 PM) :

If you step outside your hotel and walk 10 feet in any direction, you'll likely find a row of vending machines and you'll have your choice of assorted beverages... but the Pocari Sweat isn't bad at all - it's like carbonated Gatorade.

Anonymous Patricia Ann said ... (1:50 PM) :

Ay, I totally miss Pocari Sweat! Not the best sounding name sure but if you close your eyes hard enough, it will faintly taste like drinking coconut juice. As in, the fresh ones you get beach side, where they chop the top off of a coconut and stick a straw in it.

Tasty.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

Might want to stick with all natural and organic Coke. Ha Ha...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:04 PM) :

Kills any hangover!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

"As you know, I am American and I like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible" ....who just drank a can of Coke....can't think of anything healthier than that!!! :)

Anonymous ramilly said ... (3:15 PM) :

The name Pocari Sweat has always grossed me out too.

oh, Boy, are people having a great deal of difficulty recognizing irony in this post. I suppose ironic American style humour does not translate very well.

This makes me think of a Japanese friend who once asked me why Americans announce, "What a beautiful day!" when the weather is horrible and gloomy. When I tried to explain, she shook her head and said "Yes, sarcasm, I know, but it is not a beautiful day."

Anonymous Ciara said ... (3:35 PM) :

LOL an American that can be critical of what the Japanese drink!!! I have just returned from the states & I found it very sad to see a country that has such wonderful fresh produce & watch how the majority eat& drink. I am Italian by the way....

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:24 PM) :

it sounds like a typical case of 'you first' to me...

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:24 PM) :

Did you drink it!?!? How was it???

Anonymous steph said ... (5:10 PM) :

i can't believe how few people got the joke! the responses made me laugh almost as much as the joke itself...

Blogger Jessica said ... (5:40 PM) :

pocari sweat is japanese!!
we drink them all the time in HK right after exercising haha

Blogger Ariel said ... (6:13 PM) :

I always loved the name of that drink.

Blogger Isabella said ... (8:17 PM) :

Can't believe you've never heard of Pocari Sweat! It's huge in Hong Kong, too, all over TV commercials. Be sure to find t-shirts with words put together at random... so very Asian.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:26 PM) :

Haha. He is joking, using humor. Is it not obvious? : )

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 PM) :

since when Americans 'like to eat as healthy and naturally as possible'? love your travels, makes me discover more and more about Americans and 'others' :)

Blogger filoderba said ... (2:31 AM) :

I am quite ashamed i didn't recognize the joke....but the reason is simple. i messed up sweat with sweet. sart, your blog really is multicultural, but generally humor is not.

Anonymous Sara Lua said ... (3:42 AM) :

I did a paper on the Japanese beverage industry for my marketing classes in business school, and my presentation included this drink b/c of the faux pas common in global marketing/branding.

Blogger spiritedly viva esperanza said ... (3:50 AM) :

isotonic drink so 'sweat' refers to after exercising!! But i'm sure you know! it's one of my favorite drinks! tastes better than 100 plus.

Anonymous george said ... (5:13 AM) :

funny thing: tying to eat as healthily as possible and drinking coke..
doesnt that seem awkward to anyone here?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:22 AM) :

It can't be much worse than Coke :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:18 AM) :

i used to wonder about that with pocari sweat too. so much to a point that it kind of just tasted wrong. it think its made out of pure sugarcane. yum. apart from the name of course.

Blogger Kyiomi said ... (8:57 AM) :

quote: 'As you know, I am American and I like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible.'

Guess you're an exception, speaking as 'a healthy American'. :-p
Should i really believe this?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:22 AM) :

I got addicted to this when I was working in Taiwan it's like the most refreshing isotonic ever....unfortunately with a name that doesn't sound great! Amazing packaging design too

Anonymous Anais said ... (2:23 PM) :

In Coke it is usually used aspartam instead of traditional sugar nowadays - and it is not very good thing + read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame
.
In Japan they use a different type of sweetener which I forgot the name of. It is prohibited to be sold in Western world mostly because of US interest in aspartame business. Although there were less medical concern about Japanese sweetener than aspartame, so you should feel safe if you drink another japanese bottle from mini bar :)

But better to drink tab water than Coke or anything like this - American or Japanese anyway.

Blogger 伊丽莎白 (elizabeth) said ... (2:27 PM) :

you're scared of this, when you drink Coke??

tea is far more healthy and natural than both. i suggest switching to the green stuff.

Blogger dodelledod said ... (5:09 PM) :

it's actually good for you when you're having fever or something like so. it's meant to recharge your liquid level of your body.. well that's what I get from the ads. I drink that when I'm dehydrating.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:43 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:55 AM) :

OMG- wouldn't it be AWESOME if people actually read the previous comments before replying with their own? Then we wouldn't have 150 of the same comments of people who didn't get the joke. My God!

Anonymous xris said ... (11:55 AM) :

Stay who you are Japan! May it never change.

Blogger Andrea said ... (6:12 AM) :

Hahahahahaha, I drank that a lot last summer in Bali. First time I saw it laying in the supermarket's refrigerator I thought the same as you. I'm still wondering what actually made me buy it, I mean, I still had a choice, you didn't haha.
But I discovered it was pretty refreshing, and I just kept drinking that crazy Sweat all summer long!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:24 AM) :

Love the Pocari Sweat, and the My Fannie toilet paper, but best of all is a bag of Colon (tubular biscuit with cream filling). One time we found giant Colon that were about a foot long and individually wrapped. I can't be sold on the Green Tea flavoured Kit Kat, though - disgusting!

Anonymous melissa said ... (3:40 AM) :

haha it's an isotonic drink :) amazing stuff. if you don't mind trying a yoghurt drink and are still in japan, try out calpico! alternatively, you can try this milk tea thing in a can called 'Afternoon Tea'. you'll find them in just about any vending machine in japan!

hope you're enjoying the sushi and the everything! tokyo (well all of japan) is awesome :) lucky you!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:57 PM) :

You know what? To be honest, Asian people care a lot more about healthy and nutritious food and drinks than Americans. Americans don't really know what is healthy food. Fried food, little vegetables or some extreme people only eat vege, restricted kinds of meat, super sweet dessert, yucky soda pops ... they are not nutritious or healthy at all!

Anonymous fa said ... (1:54 AM) :

And your taste is wonderful. Even when some stuff strikes us as quite 'mad', they're just great!

I am sorry, but what do you mean by saing that because your are Amercian you drink & eat healthy and natural. In my country Americans are considered are "everything" eaters, so your post is just a kind of joke for me. Sorry, that's my point of view. Bye, bye

Blogger Emiry said ... (2:12 PM) :

had this in indonesia. pretty good last resort drink. :/

stoked you had it too!

Blogger Fabulous *Fabs said ... (3:42 PM) :

Loved the don't let internet kill the humour statement. It's hard to be funny sometimes when zillions of ppl read and get their "own" meaning of stuff.
Love Pocari Sweat, miss my days living in China when I'd have a cold Pocari when hangovered... Either Pocari Sweat or Lucozade, both NOT available in Brazilian markets :-(
Luv ur blog!! U rock xoxo

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:29 PM) :

Some people like to say "I'm from Asia," as if that makes them more qualified to talk about a Japanese product. I grew up in Japan and Pocari Sweat is big there. Whoever said this drink is like a Gatorade, without the fruity flavor, is wrong. The drink is flavored with mild grapefruit and yes, it is awesome. The taste very light, as with many other Japanese made sodas and snacks. This is one thing the American snack industry can never learn.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:34 AM) :

It's funny, but in russian "pokari sweat" sounds as "win the world" :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:48 PM) :

they had this all over china too. it's asian gatorade.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:25 AM) :

POCARI SWEAT can help you out very much on a hangover day!
followed by a Bloody Mary ... of course ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:56 AM) :

I'm a surfer and came across Pocari Sweat for the first time when surfing in Bali (Indonesia). It's actually the best isotonic drink you can get after a few hours in the water. I'm from Germany and my taste buds are merely used to the Western kind of flavours. I love it!

Anonymous hope chest said ... (8:31 AM) :

I heard that pocari sweat before but I still don't know what it is. But now I know it so well. Thank you for all who comment. The help a lot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:09 AM) :

They actually even pronounce it as Pocari Sweet in Korea, I guess the company just mispelled the word.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:04 PM) :

hahha, I went to Japan and wondered the same thing.. also tried some, it was OK.

Anonymous Julia said ... (9:16 AM) :

'drank the can of Coke' vs 'like to eat as healthily and as naturally as possible'.
are you kidding?:))
i refuse to think you can naively beleive Coke is healthy or all the more organic))) nice joke
