The Hamptons, Italian Vogue Pelle

I shot this story for Italian Vogue Pelle last August. As you know, magazine editorial budgets are extremely low, especially in this economy. Instead of packing up for an exotic location, I shot this at the hotel where I spent Summer vacation with my kids.

We didn't officially ask permission to shoot there, so we quietly ran around the grounds with a hair stylist, makeup person, fashion stylist, tech person and four or five assistants.... you know, a typical vacation day.

The fishing poles, boogie boards and bag of charcoal belonged to my neighbors. I shot this very early in the morning and kept telling the stylist, "Hurry! Get the bag and bikinis in place, so I can shoot this before they wake up".

Vibrant and beautiful!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:29 PM) :

I love these shots, makes me wish for summer already. The ease of dressing in summer vs. the layering and boots and gloves all winter long. I love the sandals, the jeans with the applique. I don't see any pastels here at all.

Blogger Bored_ said ... (7:31 PM) :

Her hair is so gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:31 PM) :

makes me want to go on vacation... now! beautiful images...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:33 PM) :

Really gorgeous fashion photography Scott. Thanks for sharing it. I love your blog. There is a clear distinction between your personal work and paid editorial. I would hate to see the best fashion blogs losing integrity as they become increasingly influencial. You're very inspiring for me.

For Anon 7:33

remember I shot this months ago and nothing has changed on this blog since. The only way shooting more editorial will change the blog is that it will make me a better more diverse photographer.

Blogger jessica said ... (7:46 PM) :

beautiful shoot Scott. I love love love hearing the stories behind what made the images... things you never hear in magazines. Its like the 'month in fashion' video of garance and yourself we all loved so much... gives as an insider look

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:48 PM) :

Love the story behind the shoot! I'm surprised and tickled you had to sneak around the hotel - it reminds me of when I had to take photos of design stores for a class assignment and was forced to use all the sleuthiness I learned from watching old episodes of the pink panther to avoid getting caught photographing the stores' "not to be photographed" displays/vignettes. Unlike your lovely photos, the pressure of being discreet combined with my sadly lacking photography skills resulted in a rather poor production ;)

Blogger Meg said ... (7:53 PM) :

Seems like both you and Garance are definitely getting some great exposure of late with the mags etc, greatness.

Am so happy for the success you have had over the last two years, it is always wonderful to watch art grow.

Luck is italian vogue, so now one is going to say "hey, It's that my board?" "hey, is that my hotel?"

Great light all throughout. Very nice work: the series has a good number of fairly original shots. I find the American flag on this small building almost hilarious! It is not a government building, is it?

The session is so great! It is fresh & live & joyful and looks so AWESOMY REAL = no superduper session mess and all the stuff which pretend to be something else they are (you know what I mean, a model pretending to be a traveller in a Amazon jungle or a Nomad on Sahara... hahahaa...)

I love your description of the process of shooting these! It's so refreshing to hear that at least some people are not hell bent on getting everyone's permission for every move they make. The photos turned out wonderfully because of it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:21 PM) :

Your shots are so lovely! This magazine stuck paydirt when they hired you. I find it hard to believe they are willing to spend so little to promote the idea that WE should spend big bucks on the clothes they present!

Blogger My So Called Life said ... (8:05 PM) :

Blogger Tailoverteakettle said ... (11:49 PM) :

This is amazing. I love that even in a shoot for a magazine as swanky as Italian Vogue, you and your crew were running around like a bunch of kids trespassing on their neighbor's property, looking for a baseball they'd knocked over the fence by accident.

Anyway, lovely photos. I think knowing the background story behind the shoot makes them even more special.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:03 AM) :

So lovely. I want to be there. The light and not-quite sherbet, not quite bright colours are mesmerising.

I wish my style was just like this. unfortunately, i don't have the time to put into having a distinct style. maybe after university. bah

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:45 PM) :

my earlier comment was that there is a clear distinction between your personal work and your editorial work - but I wasn't referring to the quality or relevence. You have a great eye. So may others focus mainly on trends. Your images have enduring relevence and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your editorial and other projects. I loved the little film you posted by Garance at the end of the fashion shows. I know that joy of working with a creative partner. I hope to show you what I'm working on too one day!
