I Need Your Help....
...with the Celine Inspiration Book Give Away
The last two seasons Phoebe Philo/Celine created beautiful inspiration books that were placed on the seats of each person attending the fashion show. I assume these books are reasonably rare since I don't think you can get them in the shops or anywhere else.
Of course not everyone took their book so Garance and I picked up a few of the extras for you, but we can't figure out how to get them to you.
A contest?
A Ebay auction for charity?
A raffle?
Instead of letting another season go by without getting these books into the hands of real Celine/fashion fans, I thought we should just ask you for ideas.
The trick is to create something that can have everyone participate (like yesterdays "versus" post) AND be able to identify and verify the winners (not so easy)
Remember that the least complicated ideas are the best for everyone involved.
PS just to be clear...the ideas do not have to relate to Celine at all

Auction them for charity!!!
You could ask people to submit their own style influences, and award the books for the ones you think are the most creative and interesting (or let your readers decide). It's subjective, but so are a lot of contests involving creativity. Or, you could ask for photos of the most imaginative styling of a Celine item. That ensures the books will go to real Celine fans who already wear the line, not someone who will turn around and resell them.
How about randomly choosing commenters from a giveaway post where we would have say something like why we'd like to get celine's book?
how about each person can submit an inspiring photo/collage/etc of how they see the upcoming seasons overall looks (not necessarily with clothes, but other images as this Celine book shows). We could submit by email with our info. You'll pick your favorite and maybe do a post with a handful of the leaders + winner!
Select one (or a few) inspiration(s) from the book and have people submit a title for it... your favorites get a copy (as well as the inventor of the game?).

Everyone should re-create a look from their favourite Celine collection, and then leave a link to the image/blog post/flickr/whatever. (& leave a little note as to which collection they're re-creating).
Or...make the best Scott & Garance collages...and send these ones to Scott or tracy, Scott's assistant. :)
The most creative collage made gets a copy of the book. All these collages from the Phoebe Philo / Celine clothing pieces need to be sent to you and / or Tracy.
Maybe you can let people describe/draw/photgraph the 'Celine feeling'. Then you can see the effort they put into it and how much of a fan they are.
Charity - I think there are so many people that are struggling these days. I think money toward one of the organizations that help men / women with wardrobes, clothing, etc. for new careers, new jobs, etc. Fashion can be powerful and for the greater good.

Because this books are very rare and therefore very special I would like to suggest a competition of the most special things someone possesses.
Every participant has to make a photograph of their most precious fashion(emotionally!) object and tell the story behind it.
Because that is what it is all about: beautiful things that become a part of you.

Contest Idea 3: Have a party/charity auction at a boutique/gallery/cafe and ask people to come in their favorite Celine inspired outfit. Charge a small entrance fee that will be 100 per cent to charity of choice and give the books as prizes for best dressed.

Since the initial question pertained to exploring the most desirable identity of a woman, to both genders. Have a call for submissions entailing what being a woman, or being with a woman, means. For time's sake, put the limit to 82 words or less. After, sit down with some friends, dinner maybe, and have the group decide which entry produces the most conversation. Heck, have the finalist choose a number between 1 and 20 if it makes you feel fair.

Well, the contest would involve a lot of work for you, judging pictures, essays whatsoever. I'd say auction it off for charity. Less hassle for you and there is a good cause involved!
For those of us without time zone advantage for a quick response, and with a simpler personality (yet who love fashion), how about US submitting a single photo of ourselves dressed the way we like to when we are comfortable at home/walking the dog. This would give YOU 3 things: [1] More fashion photos to exhibit from - surprise from your readers to your readers, [2] participation sampling from your readers, [3] clue as to readership location is using gps type info off photos using Apple. You could create a fashion collage! Obviously the winner could submit back to you the matching photo that was sent in. It would be fun to see some statistics about the age and gender and heat map location of readership - which I assume is huge because of your excellently entertaining and educational work. P.S. I've never won something cool like this.
Recently I saw in a blog (I cant remember witch one) a contest where people would send photos of there essential day by day items.
Things like glasses, scarves, pens, wallets, dogs, mobile phones, whatever .. All in just one shoot!!!
There were submitted some real nice pics, with some very interesting objects.
Since The Sartorialist is a Blog that uses photographs as the mean of communication, who submitted the pic that you liked best would be the winner!!!
for the contest: everyone takes a photo, inspired by the pictures you have shown us from the celine book, the pictures you believe works- the photographer has gotten an understanding of what the celine pictures represent and is about - deserves one of those books!
Why not consider awarding one book to the creator of your favorite 'giveaway idea' and other copies given away in true Sartorialist Fashion-- to those on the streets that truly inspire you and your team to photograph them. Style celebrates style!
I don't know, I like the number lottery, or else you could do what the radio does, say, the first 10 people who sign on on a particular day get the booklets.
I love the idea of donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for a lovely young person who loves fashion.
That would be rewarding for all of us.

A contest where we send in a photo of our selves in our favourite outfit. So many of us dream of beeing at the Sartorialist, so that winning this might beat the actual prize. Why not have e a contest where the price is to get your photo here. Lots of us live in places like Norway, where you never go. Maybe you would have fun looking through all the pictures!

Why not a personal style contest? Each person sends in a picture of a Celine-inspired outfit. You pick your favorites. It would require work, but would help you identify people really passionate about Celine- and seems appropriate for a Celine inspiration book.

how about a photo contest with a "lost and found" theme where the readers submit photos, you choose a certain number of those photos to be voted on by the readers. the voters are entered into a lottery (numbers based on date and time of vote) to win the books. then a silent or ebay auction for the winning photo, all proceeds going to a chosen charity.
as for the difficulty of weeding through images... a flickr group could be set up to make it easier and more efficient.
Perhaps donate at least one copy to a Parsons or FIT library. Spread the love, share the wealth, you know?
Agree w/Anonymous 1:18. You and Garance will hardly have time to look at and judge photos or collages or poems, etc. Just do either the number contest or an eBay auction benefitting Dress for Success (after all, it is fashion-related).
contest idea: submit 2 pictures (maybe even of the same outfit) - how satorialist would photograph it; how garance dore would photograph it.
Give a copy each to a fashion school/library/special collection like Pratt or Art Institute of (fill in the blank). Plenty of students/aspiring designers will have access to these resources then. They will be taken care of and preserved. From, your friendly librarian.
I think you should have a posting contest, where people leave you their email and a haiku about fashion (standard 5/7/5) about fashion/a trend/celine/whatever. The haikus would be fun to write, to post about, and you could just pick the ones you like best.

You will save yourself a lot of time by just having people leave a comment. There are random number generators out there that many other bloggers use (I know nitrolicious uses these things), and whatever number it picks, say 10, you find the 10th comment left behind and then give them a book. auctioning, contests--these things take time and let's just be real here--you have other things to do, right? Who doesn't?
You should start a photo contest based around the books. You can start one on ibeatyou.com and then embed the whole player here. People upload their pictures and everyone can vote and rank them.

How about auctioning it off on ebay for Haiti relief fund?
The fashion industry already had a close tie with Haiti for their lower end manufacturing line and maybe it can once again be used for both start-up businesses and mid-priced lines. Can you imagine how much they could benefit if only Target used Haiti's labor force and manufacturing mills to produce their Go-International lines? They are so close to our shores and have so much potential...
A raffle would be a fairly easy way for all involved. 1) post to your blog and say that it's running until whatever cut-off date/time you choose. 2) look at the total # of responses. Use a random number generator (online, or in programs like MS Excel), and based on the # of books you have, pick numbers.
So, if you have 10 books, and 1000 respondents, tell the random # generator to select 10 #s in that range.

Quite difficult as Celine fans are all over the world.What can be done to make sure that those books are on the right hands is to give them to fashion schools.
They can be then in their documentation which will help students.
How about you simply make us play a little sartoriaphotography of our hometown trendsetters ;)
I would probably go for something more interesting... i would make the book/ books to be a link between your readers. Something like a "chain of favors" were everybody can have it for a wuile and then they `ll pass it on the next user.

everyone knows the photograph of audrey hepburn from breakfast at tiffany's... and these kinds of photographs create characters and inspire us to be stronger, more elegant, to live deeper and more fantastic every day - like the people photographed for this blog.
so the contest would be to create similar looking "cinema" scenes that emulate classic styles we all love. you would be able to judge the composition of the photograph, its creativity, and its capacity to inspire regular people in a world of high fashion and iconic stars.
the people who win could really use the book for more inspiration.

Do a book hunt. Place the books in a particular area, ( maybe at store, on a street, at the park etc). After they are hidden let the readers know the location.
Give us a time in which we should go look for them and see who can locate a book.

Personally I like one of the first comment idea with regards to choosing numbers. It is fairly simple and hassle free. Also, it seems fair because it all has to do with chance, not merits or opinions.

One book could be the prize of a contest (I love the personal inspiration book idea), while the rest get auctioned off for charity. Then it's for a good cause, AND those of us with less money also have shot at earning a gem.

I'd count the comments for January/February and reward those who have commented most often. That may leave me out, but it seems like the simplest thing to do.

i don't know if someone else already suggested this:
you set a deadline.
everyone interested leaves a comment till the deadline (1 comment per person allowed).
you decide a criteria to attribute numbers to comments (the easiest and best one is chronological order eg first comment: nr.1, second comment: 2, etc.).
you pick the winners using a random number generator (on random.org you find one for free)
btw, this is the criteria normally used in other blogs for giveaway's attribution.
I think a contest would be better, because I just can't afford to take part in an auction for charity... Have people take a picture of themselves in a $50 or less outfit and pick the best!

I like sumbissions from Sart blog readers about their favorite fashion object...or the Celine Haiku! Both may inspire the creative side in your reader. The submissions would be limited to one entry per person and the length of the fav fashion object would be a short 50-100 word essay about their distinctive fashion item

It's an inspiration book right, so why not challenge everyone to describe something that INSPIRED them on a Tuesday and then describe what they did to pass the inspiration on to someone else. The person with the story that inspired YOU the most wins. It might not be as simple as picking a random number but it could be the start of a good thing. (
Why Tuesday? well, becuase it's the most boring day of the week)
To keep things rather simple perhaps ask people to comment on their views of the Celine show and use a random number generator (i.e. http://www.random.org/) to choose certain numbered posts at random as the winners (would require either google id or some identifying factor in their post)

As much as I would love to win one via a poem/haiku about how fashion speaks to you personally, or the pick a number option etc. I feel that charity auction is the way to go - even knowing that I would not have the money to purchase one.

The easiest way to do this kinda stuff is usually a giveaway. You give a due date for people to sign in, via comments, for example, and at the end you count them and then pick a number at random. To make it more interesting, you could make it into some sort of contest, I guess..people should comment on something specific or something like that.
I'm really impressed with everyone's suggestions, I love them all.
If you have say four books, why not auction one for charity, do one as a random contest (guess a number), one a creative essay, and one a photo contest. Some of these photo contests ideas are brilliant, I'd definitely enter that.
The only logistics problem with that is, your inbox would be flooded with jpg files! I don't know how you'd control that, apart from asking people to just submit one, and compressed, for goodness sake.

i just wanted to say thanks for thinking of all of us! i love the image of the two of you gathering up the extra books like souvenir cups at at the end of a baseball game. knowing that there would be many readers here who would love to have one.
i don't have a preference as to the "contest" - a charity auction certainly seems to be the simplest with great value, but some of the more creative/involved ideas would be fun to watch and participate in!
I like Aya Rosen's idea. I would love to see the pictures. Then all could get involved.

I think it should be a fair contest, if any. And will it be just for the U.S. or over the whole world? I guess you and Garance will have to figure out how much work you would like to spend on this contest. But I really think it should be about something creative. Otherwise you could auction it off for charity since anyone could have it anyway. But I would like to suggest a competition of some sort, since I have to be a little bit selfish and want the book myself. :)

Perhaps the contest could be a marriage of both creativity and charity? I like the idea of auctioning it off for a good cause, but seeing as the ratio of people who'd love a chance at this book to the people who could afford to go into a bidding war for it is out-proportioned, that doesn't seem fair.
Maybe you use some of the creative ideas left in the comments, such as choosing a few sartorially inventive photo submissions from readers, and then making the inspiration book available to your selected winners for a set, straight to charity cost?

A comment seems more straightforward and less fussy than a picture so maybe a comment that links Celine with some of the pictures in this blog? Which picture captures well the Celine style and why? Something short --150 words or something like that-- and choose the winner at random with the random number generator at random.org
Having said that, I would support the idea in the post of an ebay auction for charity. There are so many needs and charities need all the support they can get.

I read about the first half of these comments and I think one of the first ideas was the strongest:
A Celine vs. Look-alike photo contest, with the most right answers winning one of the books. That way, the game rewards true Celine die-hards while not excluding those who aren't so well versed but still love learning about fashion.

Love the caption idea above. Don't have to be a creative pro to do well at that. While I'm all for charitable giving, making this a competition based on money is a bit of a turn off...
The images were gathered together for a reason, bound together in a book to give people an idea of what inspired the result, why it came to be the way it was.
Get people to identify the links between what is displayed in the book and what was presented in the collection.

I say something very rationnal (maybe someone already propose it, but i don't read all teh answers...).
- You create a mail (exple: celine_book@gmail.com)
- ask everyone to send a mail guessing how many participants will play
- set a finish date
- at this date, see who the closest to the real result, and if there is many people who got the right answer, who still have the date of their mail to sort them.
Quite easy, no way to cheat and you sure have the right coordinate of the winners.
Not so long ago, during the Balmainia, nobody cared about Celine - Ivana Omazic's collections simply went under. Now that Phoebe's here... well, we all know the rest. Everyone's talking about the Celine woman, although it's not quite certain who she is. So let's talk about how an old French house (now Celine, before it Balmain, and there are other examples, too) can change its should-we-pay-any-attention-to-it? status so rapidly. Because that's what happened - less than a year ago, everyone wanted the brash Michael Jackson jacket, not the practical coat in navy.
How about this;

The idea of a raffle seems most fair. Anyone who is interested can buy a ticket and have a chance to win, unlike an auction. A raffle might generate more donations which could go to charity, such as Keep a Child Alive, in honor of Alexander McQueen. You could film the raffle drawing and post it on your blog, almost like the Academy Awards. SMJ
Perhaps an auction can be held with proceeds going towards Haiti and Chile earthquake releif. Donating never goes out of style, after all. ;)
It will be interesting to see what you settle on. I do think it's nice of you to not automatically default to "auction". It's nice that anyone, no matter what their financial situation, can have the same chance to get this book. SO much in 'fashion'* is denied to people on lower incomes.

I like the charity idea - do that with one or two books and then just make a random draw between all the people who enter their wish for a book in a comment box - in this way, the people who really want a book can get one by buying it... and students or other less wealthy fashionistas (we like fashion as well but do not have the money to buy such an amazing book) will have a chance of getting our hands on one as well.
Hmm....how about a contest for fashion haiku or limericks? Prizes for most creative, most clever, silliest? Points deducted if your limerick starts with "there once was a girl from Nantucket..."

Define "style" in 140 characters or less (like Twitter). Judged by either you, or us, or a combination of both.
2 ideas:
1) The idea to send in a most "sartorialist" outfit is a good idea, but since not everybody's budget is in the same capacity how about you have a "thrifty sartorialist/recession sartorialist" contest. Everybody may submit an outfit, but how about some limits are placed (i.e. the outfit can not cost more than $200 overall, it must be all thrift, etc.)
2) art competition?
I guess I am the only one thinking of a trivia contest.. iconic fashions/pieces matched with the designers who created them, or geat moments in fashion or something. This way you could wittle down the cache of those in the running (you will have hundreds, maybe thousands of entries).. and then have a "fashion-off" where the highest scoring ten get some bonus round, or something like that. Not too much trouble for you, concrete results and scores, and you educate us at the same time.

- an illustration
- a collage
- a clothing design sketch
- a poem
or maybe just use random.org and pick a number to get a winner?!
Just using the LV vs Celine idea... what about... the man/woman you are now, and the man/woman you'd like to spend a day as...
For example, as a small petite woman... I'd like to spend a day as a tall amazing man... someone like Alber Elbaz, Karl Lagerfeld or George Clooney.

An auction for charity is a great idea. Something local, like a homeless shelter, or food baskets for poor families. Maybe get a big company to double the final bid and add to the donation.
I think that you should split it up...
Give a couple out to loyal fans who lack in the cash. We could submit via email a picture of ourselves dressed to express our personal style. Then you could also post the winners so those of us who are not fortunate enough to live in a fashion centre could end up gracing your space...
The rest should be auctioned off to support a charity of your choosing.

While an auction for charity in theory sounds like the nicest idea, and it's a wonderful thought that probably tons of people will be bidding and no doubt a tidy sum will come out of it for a good cause, but it's not really the fairest thing to do! A lot of your readers don't have the finances to be able to bid and would still love to have the chance to get one! I have no idea how many of these books you have, but in case you have a few, the best idea would be to take some of them and put them on e-bay for charity and take the other half for a creative competition, to give fans who don't have the resources a shot at winning the book! Fair and square : )

Maybe it can be a photography contest, which would be more coherent with the prize AND your blog. I suggest the best "book" of fashion pictures done by an amator wins.
