On the Street....At VPL, NYC

This is about style that really frames the face. It draws the viewer in and makes you recognize the person. This is not for the faint of heart.

Anonymous Nancy said ... (9:38 AM) :

Beautiful shots. Love the way the sky softly frames the faces and the city is recognizable in the background. An original take on "street" fashion photography. Soulful portraits too.

Sometimes clothes can distract from the persons face, sometimes as you say they can frame it. Great to see a differnt angle on things!

Blogger Lou said ... (9:53 AM) :

She looks the spitting image of a young emanuelle beart...Brilliant portraits, with that stark celestial blue as background.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:53 AM) :

Two perfect photographs Scott, thank you. These two are really putting themselves "out there" which I love. Once again, you have renewed my faith that we too can put out the fashion goods. Happy Monday to everyone!

Maybe it's the lighting. You've always used natural lighting. Here it looks as if you've had some help, although I have no way of knowing for sure. It starts to be more about the photography than the subject maybe? And there are more than enough photography blogs. That said, I really like these portraits. They're terrific. You're excused for having a little fun, in my humble opinion. I don't see it as a loss of focus necessarily.

Anonymous Ae said ... (6:24 PM) :

I like that you've been featuring more portraits lately.

Laurel Pantin is pretty but in this portrait she is stunning.

I like the clean lines and the glow of both pictures... It makes it feel like spring is coming.

Both of them look classy, sophisticated and ready to *do* something. It captures what I am aiming for at this time of year.

Anonymous 2prettykitties said ... (6:51 PM) :

we just have to say from brooklyn to anonymous, no girl has only one peak of beauty, there are many over a lifetime.

Blogger julie opotiki new zealand said ... (10:53 PM) :

I'm loving the lipstick!!! yay for her

Blogger mette said ... (11:07 PM) :

Seeing the girl, makes me wish I could turn her age again. Today, everything seems to be ok, when I was her age, the possibilities were scarce. But I have my experiences, something she lacks.

Blogger Norma said ... (11:48 PM) :

Love them. I have to say, the new red-orange lips that are showing up everywhere rock my world. I never thought I'd be an "orange lipstick" kind of woman but that teaches me never say never! It's a great trend esp on the heels of so much dark fatale red.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:50 PM) :

That's the train conductor from Darjeeling Limited, yes?

Blogger cloudo3 said ... (12:21 AM) :

so so beautiful

Blogger Brocade Blue said ... (12:38 AM) :

what did you meant by faint heart? He is not even a muslim. He is a Punjabi...religion derived from Hindu. Men are encouraged to keep their hair long n tie then up in a bundle (turban) If you noticed, he'd probably also have a tiny bulge in the turban-where he stores his tiny comb.

Blogger Valéry Lorenzo said ... (1:01 AM) :

I met this man on a train in India.

Blogger Jaspreet said ... (3:13 AM) :

Love these. Especially the second.

Blogger AONIE said ... (6:26 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:26 AM) :

she looks amazing!! reminds me of marilyn monroe.

Blogger Sancho Penser said ... (8:09 AM) :

Oh dearest Sart,
those are the best pictures EVER! So wonderful. A reminder why it is nice to be human, to live on this earth, to breath, to think.
At least for today they stop me from just taking the leap of faith out of the window.
Thank you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:43 AM) :

No Way!! I just saw Darjeeling Limited two days ago! Wes Anderson is a genius for using this guy. He is the ultimate straight man that is humuorous to boot because of his timing. Love these shots, Sart--they have a hopeful/other worldly quality about them. W.A.'s beard jumps off the photo (almost).

Anonymous Alison said ... (10:05 AM) :

I'm a scarf wearer, and I love how different these scarves are: the first, the most basic and simple knit, and the second, a more complex textured silk with different coloured threads. Both suit their wearers and draw out their characters. While she could probably wear his scarf, it wouldn't do as much for her as the one she's wearing - and it certainly wouldn't give the same beautiful, insouciant vibe. And I can't imagine him wearing her scarf, period. These photos show how how much is conveyed by what is basically a length of cloth.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:24 AM) :

very inspirated portrait of the girl

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 AM) :

Laurel looking gorgeous as ever! The lip shade is Mandarina from Milani Cosmetics. www.milanicosmetics.com

Back at you Brooklyn:

I said "peak of her YOUNG beauty"

I agree, girls & women have many peaks (and sometimes valleys) in their beauty during a life time.

Blogger Amber said ... (2:30 PM) :

Beautiful.

And I quite like how chatty you've been on your blog lately. It's a nice departure from just outfit posts.

Anonymous Connie said ... (7:57 PM) :

When I saw the picture on the top, I didn't really think much of it. Pretty girl, ordinary outfit, from what I could see of it. And then I saw the second photo.

These two pictures work together beautifully as a diptych, and they really should never be presented in any other way. The similar backgrounds, postures, and lighting tie them together and yet the contrast is striking and unforgettable: the plumpness of her face and the line of his cheekbones, the lightness of her hair and the curl of his beard, her flashy red lips and his conservative turban. Even the directions that they are looking compliment each other.

I don't know if you meant to arrange them this way on purpose, but really, these two photos, as a diptych, not side to side or switched, but just the girl above the man is such a perfect arrangement and was meant to be just so.

Anonymous theo said ... (1:27 PM) :
