Comments on "On the Street....Madison Ave., New York City"
I really like the combination of slightly varied tan hues, in the gloves, shoes and the coat.
And his steely gaze!
Thanks again Scott, you pictures are always fabulous.
Poppy
Isn't that man a mafia boss?
Nice shoes.
fabulous.
All about the green hat. And the shoes!!!!!!!! And all of what he is wearing combined!
Especially green and beige, camel color and it is beautiful.
Trousers and I love the charcoal gray color.
NICE color combination. Totally Dapper.
Wow one of the best photos in a long time! Keep 'em coming Scott!
Hope to see you in Helsinki and Copenhagen soon!
My god that is my father reincarnated. I have the receipt for the doppelganger of that coat L.Nichols Esq in account with Pope & Bradley Savile Row To D.B Camel Ulster £37.50 Dec 19th 1949
The gentleman even looks like my father and the gloves are the same the only difference is that my father would never have worn his scarf like that but quietly crossed over and tucked in.
glove, coat, brown shoes, trousers, scarf. perfecto.all about the green hat..great caption.ahakz. salude.
Timeless Elegance...Sometimes elegance is not just the colors and the kind of clothes..Its a glance of an eye or a hint of a smile.....its...A way of being....
love the shades of brown and the pop of green.
fresh.
Oh my. Would that I could have lunch with that man.
the ultimate preppy; DB camel polo overcoat!
nice shade of the cap.
very nice and crazy...:)
He looks great and I love the blue sky setting him off. Did you know for superstitious Chinese a green hat is bad news...
Very classy
Yep it's all about the hat... and the composition of the photo...why can't I take photos like this? Cheers!!!!
I'm loving that green hat!!!
woah. simply awesome. sleek and classic. i lost words. he's such a gentleman with style!
I love the color combo going on with the green hat, camel coat, and brown shoes. Great photo too! xoxo

...love the match of red tones of the scarf and the shoes...
www.intothefashion.com
Beautiful! When did you take the pictures? I live in Philly and I don't remember when I last saw the sun ...
I'm loving the hues on this, older men in NYC have such great taste.
Timeless. Those shoes cannot be less than 10 years old, and yet they look great on him. The only tiny little thing I would change would be the gloves, for a slimmer version, also in leather. Jorge from WPB
The quintessential Ralph Lauren Polo camel hair polo coat. Just perfect!
...as you say all about the hat, but if the trousers weren't such a perfect length the titfer would have been a trifle.
Classic. I love it!
I adore the different hues of brown and then the pops of red and green. He looks so polished and yet so warm proving that function does not always usurp form.
Dapper!
The Shadow Knows...but seriously, the man looks great.
The size, cut, and proportions of his coat are terrible.
Loving the color story here. warm, earthy and the camel coat slightly contrasted by cognac gloves. At least we had a slight reprieve this morning and it *felt* a little warmer. I miss my walk to 40th + 5th - I miss all the great fashions of the morning go- the subway will do for now during this cold weather
Love the muffler too. He looks like an actor, but can't remember his name.
I've missed seeing your pics....
Like it:)
wonderful ! and in spite of the classic elegance of the style he ( or perhaps the picture ?:) has a wonderful touch of earthy urban magic ...vive l' oxymoron in writing as in life (style) !! Conc in Berlin
The epitome of classic style. Only blot on the landscape, his pocket is too full and will ruin the shape.
What is in there anyway? All he should need is a pocket hankerchief (in an inner pocket of the coat or jacket or trousers underneath) and a slim wallet surely? Anything more should be housed in a small attache case or document holder or briefcase.
and the shoes...
The green hat and the shoes.
Fantastic.
love the hat! very classic look
Such a picture makes me wanna go to NY immediatly :)
All about traditions.
Not all about the green hat. The hang of his trousers suggest he's wearing suspenders (braces). What you can't see often is just as important as what you can.
beingmanly.blogspot.com
Now this is style!
How all-round handsome!
He looks very elegant, but you'll never see a chinese people wearing a green hat. The meaning of 'wearing a green hat' is 'being cuckold'...
Great Pic, Sart. Agree with all the comments here. Love the 2 inch cuff (?), clean shoes, coat (is that a flap over the check pocket?) and the robin hood green colored hat. Great stuff.
Cheers,
Joe
Fun much!
He looks lovely! Beautiful mix of colors!
Great look and the hat adds a touch of whimsey. It is clear that this gentleman pays attention to his look. Everything is just so and his shoes look well cared for. The only hiccup that I can see is that his trousers need just a tad more length but I guess that is just a personal preference. Scott the photos are great please keep it up.
I really luv this style
http://www.wardrobeme.blogspot.com/
Amazing, love it!
i'm mesmerized...by his style and the way you took the photo
Ah yes the green hat, the camel coat, the red scarf and the handsome face, de-lovely.
That coat. Reminds me of Michael Imperiloi's character in 'Law and Order'. The man is always on point. Too bad the weather over here doesn't so cold as to warrant a 3/4 coat.
so dapper. there's such an old school elegance to him. love it!
No break in the slacks...awesome pockets on the coat...the hat...the scarf...the shoes....impeccable. This is what consistency is all about.
+8!3
This is a very stylish man!You CANNOT ignore him if his is passing right in font of you..This coat is just perfect...
most people matches style with teenagers... they are wrong!
love hats!
A Gay Talese look alike. By the way Gay Talese, the son of an Italian tailor and himself a great writer is the nattiest man on the streets of NY.
I would love a date with that man...
sharp as a tack
I'm tempted to ask, is this the actor Rene Auberjunois? Brilliant on the stage years ago in 'Le Misanthrope.' - robert
I love it when men dress like men: hat, great coat, beautiful shoes.
fantastic pic, really liking the light in this one and this man has some real winter sartorial elegance in the truest form. Love it
I had the privilege of working with this gentleman and he was always impeccably tailored. I was so glad to see him on this site, he is definitely worthy.
Thank you Scott.
cool silhouette. shoes are wonderful too.
10,000 Blog
Love it all; he looks beautiful.
I love the camel coat with the green hat. I'm all about classic looks. Always in and never out. Nice photo!
http://yuppielady.blogspot.com/
All about the patch pockets on that camel coat!
fridayswithcilantro.blogspot.com
The hat bring a bit of hunt feelings into the realms of the city.
Fabulous photography and inspiration for style. I love your blog!!
All the colors seem to work so well..That has to be a Patricia Underwood Hat!!
stunning.
i really will manage everything for that when i'm older to still really take care of my style, to have style.
http://www.kitsune-tofu.blogspot.com
He has a nice person's face...
XXX...
i love his shoes and his coat ...
It's all about the cool camelhair coat!
impeccable!
the green hat is an exclamation point to this handsome ensemble.
what a classic gentleman.
ps- everyone should check out my TOTE GIVE-A-WAY!

Superbe photo !!
Si tu veux aller jetter un coup d'oeil... http://InitialsCC.blogspot.com
No one dress better than NYers! Great look -- love the shoes, terrific classic coat and great hat.
classic and chic! Love it!
http://loveyourfabulousself.blogspot.com/
Before I scroll down I read your comment to the pic, I thought the same: definitely yes, it's all about the hat... green hat :)
Lovely hat. I love the effect of the camel color of the coat next to the darker gloves and chestnut shoes.
http://watermelonfeet.blogspot.com
I disagree. I do like the hat on him but i think he has a lot of other things going on. The shoes are great, the jacket is awesome. And he complimented the look with gloves and a scarf. He just looks very polish, impeccable. Plus he's very tall, it's like his presence demands attention.
I think the whole outfit looks very gentle-manly. The hat is just the 'dot on the i'.
When I grow old, I wish I can look as cool and sharp as that guy...
Cool hat.
Can almost hear the street noise.
You see..Style NEVER ages.
Monsieur is classically well dressed with a little bit of a twist...me likes.
It´s all about the length of the pants...Simple perfection!
Mafia boss? Is there another ethnic group that can be so gratuitously slimed as we Italians?
Love it!!! It's Asmus Leonhard... THE fashion stylist for Brooks Brothers ad campaigns... the last of the few who know really how to tie a tie! Gorgeous John Lobb shoes!
Sart,
Don't forget the shoes! Great warm colors - and a man who knows how to manage the pop of green among neutrals elegantly.
Great shot
xx
I love that every single thing is classic. All those clothes could be 70 years old! (The guys is not though!)
i love this
the colors are fantastic
the way hes standing!
good to know that old people have a fashion sense too
It's one of the Madmen!
www.openzedoor.blogspot.com
Very sharp! The hat, the scarf, the shoes, the coat....classic! I LOVE.
Scott - This photo is perfection. The well-polished shoes and beautifully fitted overcoat make the outfit special - but the pop of yellow in the taxi makes the photo dazzling!
"All about the green hat."
...and the scarf, and the coat, and the shoes...
Oh, I wanna be him too.
The light is fantastic.Like his smile.
I absolutely adore the entire look. The first thought that came to my mind was how comfortably warm and snug he looks in that outfit!
I love the green of the hat but I have to say I like the scarf he's got on- the colours and the way he has it knotted.
stunning photo.
Dear Mr. Magician!!!!!
What an air... and colors and everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nata T
This reminds me of the good old, early days of the Sartorialist. An actual, real live, full grown man, not a model or fashion insider, or twentysomething wannabe.
Why can't all men dress like this, where has all the class gone? and when did wearing your pants around your ankles replace it?
Your photo is fabulous!
This gentleman reminds me of Salzburg - maybe it's that fantastic hat. :)
My bigggest gripe with living in Los Angeles is that I never get to wear winter clothes. I know woe is me...
Great shoes.
Lookee here, Scott. I've been a DIE-HARD follower of your blog since around Oct 05. You were fresh, exciting, a welcome oasis to the staid men's rag magazines. Composition-wise, your photos are still stellar, but the blog has evolved away from the energy it used to have regarding authentic men's style. Gone are the interviews, profiles, personalities, et cetera and so on of the men who weave the fabric of every day life & the blog is littered with the same BS that you see everywhere---is this a reflection of your influence? Of course it is & hat's off to you for your influence. But, we don't care that you have a great double-breasted topcoat in Paris accompanied by the phone to your ear ("what sort of deal is he making? L'Uomo Vogue, Russian GQ or is he simply checking his credit card balance?"), we don't care that your romance has sparked with a French fashion blogger/illustrator (whose blog is incredible, but the fact that you divorced your wife & hooked up with Garance...a trite cliched, don't you think?), and Australia? What. Ever. Please, please return to what you used to be: a vibrant voice, a volcano...a bandana-cum-pocket square neatly placed on a five thousand dollar coat. We need you. Signed, A-Loyalist-To-A-Point
My father wears this every.single.day.
I know you're not a matchmaker, Scott.
BUT . . . this man seems to beckon me, and I think I need to answer the call! Do you have his contact information? He is a true dapper Don, but is he single? Is he straight? Is he searching? If yes to all of the above, please let him know that, although I didn't meet him romantically -- on some enchanted evening across a crowded room (as I'd have liked), I did meet him on the world-wide web on a crisp and cold evening here in Boston. That's 21st-century romance, dapper Don! E-mail me and love me! (That's the sequence of events I predict for Dapper and me.)
That is beautiful. Looking forward to pulling off the feminine version of this look.
He was smart to put the green and the red around his face. If he had the camel too close to his skin, it would have washed him out. I have the same problem with these earth tone colors in winter. And what's not to love about grey and camel, a beautiful combination.
Fantastyczne! Amazing!!! It is a husband of Ilsa Lund?
But in Warsaw isn't possible wear shoes like this. Ski shoes are more suitable now:)
He is looking smart. Good sunny photo.
without the background, he looks like he can be from fifty years ago. i love it.
Wow! What style! This is great!
he looks like the BFG from Roald Dahl's book :D
its the shoes!!!!everything else is matte bt those shoes catch d eyes
stylishh!
thegood-kind.blogspot.com
Everything's perfect here. The coat, the attitude, the perfect light on the perfect hat, in the perfect green. You just captured a perfect moment-person-style-light
The shoes draw all my attention. Very nice. Would have chosen a different scarf though... Hats rule!
love the photos! all of them
Garrett McLean at sm compufix
The coat is beautiful!

This man has a great, timeless style that doesn't look premeditated.
Great photo!

im so love ur blog , and i come from taiwan.
Brilliant contrast. A vision I'd love to see on a cold day. He mademe smile and wish to see more people like him on street.
Don't you just want to spend time with him. Oh, yah.
clean & simply. seems effortless
sobrietà...classicità...ed eleganza...!
a gentleman!
www.whatdialike.com
Those shoes are fabulous. This man is definitely cool.
Mad Man, indeed.
in chinese culture, to say a man is wearing a green hat means that his girlfriend/wife is cheating on him. so think twice before you wear a green hat, gentlemen.
It"s all about his figure, his class and surely about the hat and the nice color of shoes..He is a gentleman, i think! That's why the hat looks not sily but modern and gives a hint of an artistic look of appearence.. By the way, i can't stop looking at your picture taken in Paris..You are S E X Y..
Love the shades on tan and cognac!!!
great photo..
XO
http://iheartfashion-mcmaris.blogspot.com/
it IS isn't it! love the splash of color.
The shoes match in color, but not when it comes to warmth, so they're totally out of place.
He looks like one of those European royals -all proper and well-dressed from hat to shoe!
The hat is absolutely inspiring.
100% Old School Class. And I'm British. :)
I love this photo, and I love it when you post people over 25!
See, even though I'm a 22-year-old girl, this is *exactly* the look I want to pull off on a day-to-day basis. I have a long way to go.
and i love the coat! great tailoring)
The hat is nice, but those shoes rock!
Awesome fit!

something a tad Burroughs about this fellow (perhaps it's the actual likeness):
http://www.ectomo.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/burroughsob8.jpg
It's from Brooks Brothers, a few seasons back.
love, love, love it, the shoes and hat are perfect; so glad to see the good ole USA pics!
The green felt hat gives a refreshing retro feel, I really love it
i wish he wasn't wearing those gloves so i could see if he's married. mm. mm. good.
Wow. Classy!
so handsome. I love the whole look
for some reason I wish there was a tiny bit of a break on the pant leg and shoe... just like 1/4" longer
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows...and he's got great fashion sense.
He looks like Peter Cushing.
Like it very much - wonderful style.
I love this photo! And I love NYC!
www.abitoffashion.com
Très belle photo.
On dirait un personnage de Peter de Seve non ?
Great photo.
A Peter de Seve character, isn't he ?
The shoes are to die for.
I want them.
Now.
If only those grey flannel pants had thick turn ups...It´ll have done it for me!!
-Hogan-
Love the shoes, understated and refined. I NEED THEM.
Crisp in the polo coat. The shoes are just too rich. The green hat has certain pop. Through the genius of your photography. Priceless.
Mad Men!
colour combo awesome!
looks just like Gay Talese ... are we sure it's not?
I've got a similar hat! Unfortunately men cannot wear green hat in China for some reason, I'm a girl though..And great coat!
The "green hat" captioned would certainly be a "loden" hat, made from a hatting weight version of the wool and alpaca blended weave that one might still see in some Austrian or Italian coats. The "loden" green is the traditional Tyrolian color.
Makes a very warm and rain and snow repellent hat and is a perfect compliment to the casual style of the camel hair polo coat worn in town and which, Ralph, as most of you know, did not invent.
Nothing trendy, just pure class. I love it, love him. He looks like he belongs in Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" (1941)...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4a/Nighthawks.jpg
Well done, sir, for giving us hope that that man still exists.
You can spot a professional miles away. Way to go, Asmus!
all about his shoes to me
Magnificent...at first, I thought it was Stephen Drucker of House Beautiful, but no. Can we give this to every man on the East Coast and say This, This is what one should look like. Enough with the trash, one should have elegance!
It's like Charlie Watts' twin brother.
"The Shadow knows what lurks in the hearts of men"
Very beautiful pictured and great styling. Definitely a source of inspiration for our BM models agency in Brighton.
Those shoes! I'm a gal, but WANT!
Love this shot..wonderful..and love NYC!!!
Very dapper! A true gentleman I suspect...
Totally love it <3
You will die for those shoes. If you touch them! Note the large bulge in his Ferragamoish cashmere overcoat. This Capo is packin' heat!
Is this Gay Talese?
Too much brown even though he has good skin colour. The coat is a little long. It's a pity he loses his chin in the scarf. He looks almost as good as Leonard Cohen in the hat.
Oh no - it's definitely about the shoes: handmade and seriously expensive, no doubt.
Demi can have Ashton, I'll take an older, well dressed gentleman any day (just ask my husband!)
The shallow depth of field in this photo is spectacular.
Also love the length of the trench. He's like Inspector Gadget's dad.
Very classic, it allways work well.
Beautifull shoes. Perfect overcoat.
Very good tailor.
Handsome.
Goodloking man!
this made me smile. i love this man!
Impeccable. Serious style.
WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN? ONLY THE SHADOW KNOWS!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
woops, someone beat me to the shadow comment. my apologies. its a great shot.
the photograph and model: crisp
THE GLOVES ARE UNLINED PIGSKIN,GREAT AND OLD SCHOOL.
a beautiful shot of my beautiful friend Asmus, a true gentleman!
Simple, elegant, perfect!
While a great colour combination, green hats are very unlucky in the Chinese tradition! Basically it means the guy is getting cuckold! I hope that isn't the case for this (seemingly) nice gentleman!
that's what I call style and class!!
100% nice!!! ;)
True chic in it's most natural form. TImeless and a pleasure to behold.
mmmm! very nice.... I do wonder though what goodies he has in his coat pocket.
On the "Loyalist-to-A-point" remarks, I would leave out his anger (comprehensible I'm sure) and take heed of the grit. He does have a point you know. I find that something is lacking -a freshness an humph- also would appreciate less references to Garance and I don't mean it in a mean way.
