Wearing a suit and a fedora together isn't something you see very often, but it is the most masculine combination of all. And he doesn't even look like a gangster.

Love his briefcase.

Blogger Daphne said ... (1:13 PM) :

LOVE! This is one I would dog ear, were it in your book (and I've done a lot of that!) The red pop that is almost like a wilted flower. The watch. The brim of the hat. The overall shape of that suit. White collar. Slim shoes. Hard case he's carrying. Everything. Even the bring white/silver(?) buttons!! This man knows what he's doing. And the location of the shot. Wow.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:17 PM) :

Not my style, but he seems sufficiently confident to get away with the bold red ascot and the floppy pocket square. The fedora and the '70s hardside briefcase work for him, too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

Love love love! That hat! Those shoes! That scarf! I can go on!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

natty hat, great combo with the red cravat/tie,paisley/polka dot and the the underlying check shirt against a canvas of black. Love the jaunty hat positioning. love the length of the pant and the totally retro briefcase.
loved the fact that I am first most of all.

To me this picture is an example of where avant garde just gets to the point of absurd looking. That being said, if that is this gentleman's personal style -- more power to him. Maybe he is evoking the same type of extreme irony that we are used to seeing in 'standard hipster style' but done in a different way.

Blogger kerfuffler said ... (1:44 PM) :

I would love to see more people wearing hats. (Baseball caps don't count!) So hats off to him for that!

The shoes however....are so extra-long in the toe region that they make walking awkward and difficult----think of what it feels and looks like to walk in clown shoes, or flippers both of which have extra length in the front.

These shoes may look sleek in a still shot, but a lot of elegance in real life depends on the graceful movement of the wearer.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

how he can dress like this and NOT look like a gangster or a pimp takes skill. the flashy shirt, tie, watch, and pocket square screams PIMP. the dark suit and fedora screams GANGSTER. so i'm thinking it's the briefcase that makes this look work. it legitimises things and brings his look back down to earth.

he wears this as if all men dress like this everyday and it's not out of the ordinary, kind of like the way they did back in the 1930s.

fantastic.

Holy cow! Do the pedestrians part and the traffic stop as he passes by?? I read the other posts and have no complaints about this being overdone or costume-y. I just think he's the suavest dude. But not approachable, mysterious in his style and elegance.

Blogger Saffron said ... (3:10 PM) :

great shoes....and everything else!!

Blogger Joy Mars said ... (3:17 PM) :

No way!

I mean he's great, but does he really exist?

The shoes are awesome. This is the latest -- the elongated toe.

Who the h. is he? I mean what would he be wearing all that great stuff to?

There is only one thing I don't think comes up to perfection: the briefcase. It looks like it's from the sixties. Maybe that's the idea, but brings this fantasy down to earth.

That said, I'm still in love with this pic. I think it's the juxtaposition with the urban environment that makes his slick perfection so dramatic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:01 PM) :

he looks really well put together. I would have liked to see the colorways of the pocket square and cravat change places - to unify the black and white of the suit with the blue patterned shirt.

I'm a little bummed that people say that a black man in a suit with flare needs to be likened to a like a pimp - one who dominates and sells others for his own profit.

Blogger Flora Márquez said ... (4:06 PM) :

SO ELEGANT!
I´ll ask the same thing Joy Mars asked: DOES HE REALLY EXIST!!!!??
Not in my block.

Anonymous davidsl said ... (4:09 PM) :

imho, this comment seems racist to me. i find nothing "pimp" or "gangster" about him. my guess is these words would not be used to describe him if he were a white man wearing the same things. the expectation that the only black people that dress well are criminals is simply racist. similar comments by other posters are equally suspect, imho. [fyi and full disclosure: i'm white.]

that said, my first impression was that this guy was rocking a great look. on closer inspection, i think his jacket sleeves are too short, as are his shirt sleeves, but that overall, the man is a total fashion stud.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:10 PM) :

Anonymous Brian C. Knight said ... (5:05 PM) :

His name is Mr. Leke. One of Brooklyn's Finest. He could be going to a business meeting or just to the corner of South Portland and Fulton St. in Fort Greene. Mr. Leke is never unsure, he is always dress proper.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:15 PM) :

Anonymous kathrin@twoforfashion.de said ... (5:19 PM) :

Perfection in every little detail.

Blogger Stella French said ... (5:34 PM) :

he is absolutely suave, a true daddy (as we say in philly)

Blogger Fashion Maven said ... (5:35 PM) :

A'ight pimp daddy smooth!

It should be impossible to pull this off, but somehow he does! I think it's the mojo in his smirk that makes it all work - plus that briefcase brings it back down to reality.

Man - what a smooth cat.

Blogger The Blasphemous Fiendess said ... (5:37 PM) :

Maybe a little too costume-like. I like the fit of the suit; it seems timeless (although everything in fashion is dateable-sometimes that's okay). I'm not a fan of fancy men and he is a bit too fancy for my taste.

Anonymous Barbara said ... (6:07 PM) :

Wow! Talk about suave... I absolutely love the hat! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:13 PM) :

The hat needs to be used as a Frisbee. And that red cravat is just too 19th century. Other than that well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:49 PM) :

Blogger CW said ... (6:53 PM) :

I like the main pieces, from the old Samsonite attache to the hat. However, the pointy shoes look both feminine and clownish; I cannot believe that is his real size. Also, the neck ribbons combine with the pointy shoes to take this very macho outfit and turn it far too feminine.

Blogger Robyn said ... (7:01 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:22 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:40 PM) :

Every time I see a guy dressed like this, I want to throw him into a wood chipper.
This look seems overly contrived, and it is not masculine.
This is just overly foppish.

Anonymous Britt said ... (7:51 PM) :

Slick and cool. Nice pic.

Blogger Shelley Noble said ... (8:21 PM) :

Spectacular. The clothing is styled to perfection but it's the artful attitude of his stance that sends me swooning.

It reminds me of the lines a classical dancer from the Erte era would strike.

Pure art.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:53 PM) :

Scott, it's your call but I feel this must be stated.

I'm beginning to think that all the Anonymous comments are from the same person who has not really commented upon any merits displayed by the clothes but rather about an infatuation for the person.

"Marry me"? LOL

"The kind of man that every woman would fall for!"? How can you make such a generalisation about every woman?

I find all this very disturbing.

love the black suit and black cap against the black skin. also approve of the classic-looking slim briefcase.

the overall look would be far more impressive if the pants were skinnier though. the flared/boot opening looks... childish or something.

I nearly coughed up a lung laughing at your comment. Do me the sacrosanct favour and warn people before bursting out with something like that again.

This man is beautiful and formal. (There is a hint here of some historical period which I cannot put my finger on. But I have seen it in paintings somewhere.)

There is no irony here. I find that black men dress up without the self-consciousness that has to use irony as a defense.

The comments on this blog that have used the word "pimpin" are patronizing and insulting. But it's just part of depraved pop culture now, I guess.

Dazzling! I wish more men would dress like this and "own it!"
