You should take more pictures of the "gothninja look". I love this style and his is no exception. I love how he is able to combine different shades of black(especially that cardigan <3) and topping it off by contrasting it with the white from his Rick Owens high tops!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 PM) :

I see The Quick and the Dead book in the background, great exhibit at the Walker Art Center - minneapolis!!

Will have to check out Rick Owens in NYC next month. Love the way the white soles caught my attention first and the laces drew my eye up to the layers of black. Very nice!!

Enjoyed meeting you in DC Monday at Masa14, thanks for coming!

1 of 2 times I have seen these kicks work well. Not a fan of the bag though.

Blogger platformshoesandwintercoat said ... (12:06 AM) :

I just received The Sartorialist, book version. It is perfect, so many of my favorite shots mixed with new ones to discover in a compact size yet generous with photos. Having the mirror of your website in book form is awesome because now I don't have to print out my favorite shots to put up on my bulletin board. It's a complete reflection of the eye of the photographer. Now if only we can have Garance's book.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 AM) :

very nice and subtle. who made that mag?!?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:00 AM) :

Maybe I'm too old to understand the Gothninja look (37- though I def get goth), but when I see this look- I can't help it- I immediately see Dylan Klebold. Maybe if there hadn't been a Columbine I'd see the Matrix, but something about it just evokes - depressed person hiding himself under big coat. Sorry. I'm sure the sneakers are the latest, edgiest shoes though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:35 AM) :

Nice kicks. Not so sure about that coat though. Is it a bathrobe?

Anonymous Paul said ... (6:24 AM) :

Lovely top half, ruined by the bottom half. I find it hard to praise those shoes or trousers; there's nothing elegant or attractive about them, they just serve to make him look a little more like a spaceman.

Blogger Rose. said ... (6:39 AM) :

What a wonderful coincidence: I've seen an other kind of "New Museum" on a blog called Advanced Style...
You should have a look !
Rose.

Blogger jefske said ... (6:45 AM) :

wow this photo totally brings me back to NY. By the way, the new museum is amazing for anyone who is interested in contemporary art.

As for the laceless comment about the hi tops, that does look good but I didn't want to break the shoes in like that.

thx for the photo Mr S.
good memories.
ps. the gothninja comment is also very fitting, I think I was planning to do a lot of walking that day which is why I wore the trackies for practical reasons. :)

Blogger Beauty Is Diverse said ... (6:46 AM) :

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (8:11 AM) :

Great picture, I like how sparse the architecture of the building is, it provides the perfect background, with all that glass! Love the sneakers, although I have long had a pet peeve with boots that have all those laces AND THEN have a zipper on the side, like these ones. Shall we have laces OR a zipper? It feels like cheating- a designer should be true to the garment, and wouldnt it be funny if a corset or a bustier had all those intricate laces that were originally designed to drive a lover crazy, but then it had a zipper for a quickie? No, no, no

I like the clothes, they go well with a slim person. The bag, IMHO, would be better on a woman, typically I like more structured bags for men, but I have to agree that it goes with the outfit. Jorge from WPB

Like it! The outfit, the style, so simple!

Blogger Julia Bolchakova said ... (10:29 AM) :

That's a rare thing when you first see a person, not an outfit. I'd like to see more people like him in this blog.

Blogger lets play a game like musical statues said ... (10:49 AM) :

this is so hot!!
i'd love to see guys dress like that around me :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:59 AM) :

Everyone comments about the kicks (which are very cool) but the pants are amazing with the shoes! The black fabric on the thighs and being tucked in to the top of his sneakers is the key to the ensemble in my unjustified opinion.

Blogger Hanna Persson said ... (12:52 PM) :

oh I like this!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:03 PM) :

Black is kind of boring. I see so many people wearing black as if it's meant to look dressy. Kind of a lack of imagination.

Blogger vinh! said ... (1:08 PM) :

Wish there was more "gothninja" on here. Jeff does it so well.

Blogger Tundrababe said ... (2:42 PM) :

Are those pockets as long as they appear to be, or is that just a shadow? It looks like he could fit wine bottles in them! It also looks like there are big patches on the front of pants, and then some black fabric behind the legs...there's all kinds of crazy stuff going on here! It's deceptively simple, all these dark colors.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:57 PM) :

wow, it really does nothing for me at all. Like being draped with so many Hefty bags while wearing Robert Smith's hightops. sorry Jeff, I'm sure you're a swell guy.

Anonymous davidsl said ... (3:03 PM) :

he looks so sad.

Blogger sofiasophie said ... (3:46 PM) :

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (4:44 PM) :

Great shoes.

Anonymous manila animal said ... (5:10 PM) :

great picture. love the colors.

@tundrababe: yeah, Rick Owens is all about the details. his colors won't shock you but his details will grab you.

the shoes. of course i love the shoes. i own a pair and it's my current favorite!

great style!

Anonymous Tobias Sweden said ... (5:10 PM) :

Anonymous hannah said ... (6:37 PM) :

its so fitting that he's standing in front of Sanaa's New Museum. LOVE!

Blogger beherethen said ... (7:45 PM) :

I like the inexpensive chicness of the look.

Anonymous Maranda said ... (9:12 PM) :

If it wasn't for the bag it would be perfect. I like his expression, I don't think he looks sad - he looks like he's about to smile. Nervously.

"Black is kind of boring. I see so many people wearing black as if it's meant to look dressy. Kind of a lack of imagination."

it actually takes effort to match black on black on black if you want to do it right like this gentlemen here. not all black are the same as some black carries with it a tinge of green or tinge of blue or tinge of purple, etc. then you also have to consider texture and fabric. so one has to be careful to get the right types of black together.

when done right, it looks like he just threw a bunch of blacks together, but done wrong, he probably wouldn't have made it on the sartorialist blog to begin with.

Blogger Couture Coco said ... (4:33 AM) :

Adore this photo for the contrast in the dark masculine colours and the glass/steel/cement background with the softness of the bag and jersey material, his expression and cupid bow lips!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 AM) :

Brilliant...I'd rock this any day, just wish i could afford those kicks!!!

Anonymous Le 21ème said ... (2:21 PM) :

I LOVE the Rick Owens sneaks...is that ALL rick? of who makes that bag? SUCH a great look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:12 PM) :

He looks really short because of how long his sweaters are and how high his sneakers are. But i love his murse.

Blogger jefske said ... (5:55 PM) :

the bag is by a little new zealand label called deadly ponies.
you can find them on http://deadlyponies.com/
i had way too much stuff in it on the day, it is not meant to be that full looking normally fyi.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:53 PM) :

It is not the bag, Jefsky.

Blogger Holly Brindley said ... (8:26 PM) :

Blogger Joy Mars said ... (9:58 PM) :

Why am I getting the feeling that this is the way everyone will dress in another 20 years? I mean, to board meetings.

Oh I thought they were Y-3 shoes !

Strange but good style indeed

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:29 PM) :

Joy Mars, hopefully not. I am certain the suit will stay a staple in any businessman's wardrobe regardless of goths, emos and vampires lurking central business districts. And if ever boardrooms will look like the set of The Matrix meet Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, that will be all the more reason for gentlemen such as I to wear suits.

Does his jacket have padded shoulders. On a dude?!

Blogger SparkleQueen said ... (4:56 PM) :

his outfit makes him look a bit short.. but i do love that cardigan.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:09 PM) :

Blogger Piccolo said ... (6:55 PM) :

is the padded shoulder and purse look in for guys now?

Blogger iida said ... (5:14 PM) :

I love love love this. Pure perfection. The layers, shapes, and colours are all delightful. And his haircut seals the deal. Now this is why I love the Sartorialist.

Blogger Andreas said ... (6:26 PM) :

Anonymous clm412 said ... (3:22 AM) :

The Ricky trainers are THE most comfortable and most amazing sneakers. Too bad the staples come out in the back and split the sole :(
