They are so dignified and graceful. It is so refreshing to see presumably wealthy women of a certain age who has not had a facelift. Love it!

Anonymous Julia said ... (7:34 PM) :

These women have such a classy look. I love to see older women (and men for that matter) so well dressed. It really proves that fashion is ageless.

I know some people thnk that when you get older you loose your sense of style, mostly because you start to dress practically. These two women are proof that practical can be stylish, and how I envy them for looking that good!

Having Lived in both, France, and Italy, this is the classic LADY LOOK of all european ladies. Simple, tasteful, and not over the top, The jewelry, and shoes are expensive, funny, as opposed, to american women on the streets, no handbags?

But both of them look really chic - and that's the only thing that counts. At least when you get shot for a fashion blog...

It's good to see what catches your eye in women over a certain age ... I like to use it as a sort of sign-post to the future for my own personal style as it evolves to a more mature phase. These women are very conservative, to me. I would call the one on the right more sexy feminine (longer hair, v-neck collar, big jewelry). The other woman I would see as more sporty (Izod style collar up on blouse, the flats). Colors and textures seem very spring-like to me, especially with the bare leg, the white on the shoe. I like to see people using spring fabrics, colors and cuts in the fall if weather permits - it gives us all so many more options. Mostly, I admire women of a certain age who take care of themselves - and these two women appear to be the picture of that. Thanks for sharing!

I love the simplicity, the grace and the elegance of these women.

Though Hermes belt spoils the overall look to me: it's so unoriginal, everyone seems to have one.

Fabulous, real stylish women.

Blogger Joy Mars said ... (8:58 PM) :

The woman on the left is a classic Italian woman. Effortless, chic, powerful.

The woman on the right is a bit too girlish.

An interesting contrast in owning / not owning your age. It makes you powerful if you do.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:28 PM) :

They're obviously wearing quality. Why ruin it with a giant "H" Hermes belt? I'll never understand the appeal of those belts.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:56 PM) :

Very different from each other! But the conservative chic is right there for both! I find their details just fabulous. That popped collar and hermes belt and those bloused puff sleeves with delicate scalloped edges. Tasseled loafer heels and a pearl set. Very nice shopping on that street, eh?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:14 PM) :

have a look, kitty, they both have handbags...

I love that both of these ladies are not wearing stockings or pantyhose. How refreshing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 PM) :

Classic. Just in case the shoe lovers are interested, I believe they're Gucci, from the past year or two.

Anonymous jo said ... (11:09 PM) :

i find this SO italian

Blogger JR said ... (11:29 PM) :

Hermes belts (and other designer belts for that matter) with conspicuous emblem placement are nothing short of tacky.

Anonymous hendrica said ... (11:59 PM) :

Everyone is commenting on how well these older women dress, but I am pretty sure the woman on the right is not that old - she just looks it because of the clothes. So interesting how the older lady on the left carries it off much better, the same loafer type shoes, but much less prissy when they are flat, the pencil skirt as opposed to the mumsy dress. Maybe they are mother and daughter - I say the daughter still has a lot to learn....

Anonymous Runway Reviews said ... (12:32 AM) :

great looks. Elegant and wearable.
Love this on the left because white/cream is the mix of the color moment plus the belt it's perfect.

Anonymous Libby K said ... (2:55 AM) :

Both manage to look quite unrumpled and seasonless in linen. And the luggage brown in each outfit adds to the overall rich look.
I am trying hard to perceive the age difference between them, and it might not be all that much. Different styles of dress and different styles of aging. Thank you, Sartorialist, for showing all your fans there are many possibilities for us as we mature.

Anonymous Bielizna said ... (3:55 AM) :

Blogger Ste said ... (4:06 AM) :

NO, sorry.
Too bourgeoise, too boring, too "Italian women over forty".
When Italian bourgeoise women turn 40 it's like if they decided to wear a uniform just to remind you of their status. Pearls, classic mocassins, Hermes belt, safe colors...
They don't show style or creativity, they simply show money.

Blogger Sophisticated Misfit said ... (4:34 AM) :

And that's class right there, ladies and germs. Note their shoes, ladies. Those are the types of shoes real men wish you would wear.

Your first shot was on my Birthday, back on 2005. Where I still lived in my tiny Spanish hometown, when I still studied, when I wasn't an expatriate working and living on Sweden, when I didn't have an idea of how tough life can be, when I didn't need to write or take photographies to feel alive.

Thanks for spreading the message, that beauty (as happiness) lives in tiny details we might loose in a blink.

Anonymous Fashioncoup said ... (4:44 AM) :

A great example of Milanese (grown up) women and the way they dress: elegant, chic and very classic. Che bello!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:59 AM) :

Quintessential italian women. The one in the right send off that strong matriarch look. It's such a characteristic look. Practical, not fussy a chic. Utilitarian in a way (we're obsessing over it and they've been doing it for years!).
And, for the belt, she pulls it off. Some great accessories get tired because of the bad use people make of them. All it takes, tough, is one good example and we remember why they're great. Louis Vuitton bags, Hermès belts and bags, Chanel...
They're fabulous, if you know what you're doing.

Anonymous gaby said ... (5:12 AM) :

an easy explanation: wealthy, healthy and bright.

The attaire looks good. ladies look good and their way of potraying is well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:27 AM) :

As opposed to American women, it is so refreshing to see women who have done nothing but age gracefully. No plastic surgery, no need to be 60, 70 and try to look 20 & 30... these women are beautiful and dress beautifully. I am betting that they have lived and live very full lives. They have confidence.

Blogger Timeless Chic said ... (5:36 AM) :

Anonymous Metropolitan Mum said ... (7:49 AM) :

Just discovered your blog via Red magazine. Count me in as a new fan.
Nice to see older women on a style blog for a change. A very subtle take on the whole beauty and age discussion.

Blogger Barbara said ... (7:57 AM) :

I don't like the blonde. She looks thrown-together and cheap. The brunette is very familiar to me - my mother was this kind of woman, a sharp, bright, no-nonsense, practical and classy woman. Not crazy about the puffy sleeves, however - too girly, but the stone linen skirt and Hermes belt are just perfect. I like her air of slightly amused tolerance, and the fact that she's not trying too hard. This look is natural to her. Her friend is a wannabe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:31 AM) :

How Italian!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:33 AM) :

Thank you Hendrika and those others who commented on the clothes/style instead of being patronizing about their age.

Lord, young people (many of whom are probably not all that young) are so conceited about something they have had no hand it.

Anonymous Gringo Jack said ... (11:29 AM) :

What a beautiful pic...

I like the shoes with bits on the left. I have an affectation for Italian shoes with bits. I have noticed that Sart never publishes photos of men with these types of shoes. Now, I see how to do it! Be an Italian lady of a certain age... Maybe in my next life.

Blogger Maggie said ... (11:59 AM) :

I'm annoyed by all the chatter about women of a certain age. I'll have to check and see those same comments are made about men of a certain age. And is everyone a baby reading this blog? I thought the Baby Boomers outnumbered everyone else.in real life. Most commenters seem to aspire to "look this good when they are that age". Sooooo are we to interpret that as saying all young people look as good as this? Ha! And as I peruse this blog I notice a distinct absense of people in their 40s. Remember that decade? It's between youth and old age. And a tough one to dress for.

It is great to see women not in their early 20s represented here. I find that many people are saying women over 40 fail to dress creatively but when the same women do that they are criticized for trying to "look young" as if creativity is the sole realm of youth. It's a lose-lose

re: lack of handbags: you will note the shoulder bag UNDER the jacket. obviously a nod to the high theft occurrences there (or she wanted to be able to take off and put on the jacket more easily). though she does not hide her awesome gold bracelet! the other lady has hers on her arm, not very visible. love the classic look, though at their age roughly, i still do not dress like that. it reminds me of my very classic and tasteful grandmother and her st. john suits. thanks, sart, for the age diversification - some of my very favorite subjects of yours are older people.

i hate it when ppl comment on a person's age, the more fawningly patronizing the worse, but damn these ladies have amazing legs. i want to be just like them when i grow up.

Blogger Susie said ... (8:08 AM) :

I guess because I'm approaching the "certain age" category I too get sick of hearing it. Why is that mentioned all the time here? Sart seems to put people of all ages in this blog, kids to seniors...

At any rate I love the woman on the left. I love her feminine blouse. I love the skirt and I think the belt is the exact right color for it. About the "H", its funny how many people have said having a designers emblem on any of your pieces is tacky.

Even when there is no emblem most of us can tell you who the piece is by, so what is the difference? I see Chanel and Vuitton bags all over and I'm fine with them. For me its how you use a piece and this woman used it perfectly in my view.

Classic, simple, tasteful at any age.
