On the Street....Subtle Masterpiece, London

This is really a subtle masterpiece of pattern. Dots, stripes, a little sparkle in the scarf - so well done and yet almost under the radar.

HEY! I sewed a pair like that for a friend for the BALL EN BLANC party in Montreal. Cool!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:36 PM) :

Under the radar, or front door left ajar? Someone's (crazy) uncle is on the loose!

Blogger FASHION SNAG said ... (1:37 PM) :

Wow, you gotta be brave to go out in this. Love the polka dots!

check me out in Barcelona @ www.fashionsnag.com

Anonymous Suzanne Nelson said ... (1:38 PM) :

Wow. He looks great! For me it's something about the fabric of the coat; if it were say, velvet it would be completely over the top, as it is it's perfect.

Anonymous Charlie Rygg said ... (1:48 PM) :

It all looks very intentional... Yet I still can't shake the feeling that he just doesn't know how to dress himself. Nothing about this look seems timeless to me.

Anonymous Bibi in wonderland said ... (1:50 PM) :

Wow, love the purple of the raincoat and the short harem pants are amazing.

Anonymous urbanmofo said ... (1:51 PM) :

Lurve his shoes... Gorgeous...

Anonymous garciamadrid said ... (1:55 PM) :

shoes or sneakers for this pant

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

This look is killer. Everyone who doesn't like it is plastic, and to those of you who even get that reference, be happy you do. There are far too few of you in the world. This man is a rogue and a visionary.

Anonymous pprisprispris said ... (2:12 PM) :

it seeems so effortless for me to come out with sucha outfit. kudos.

Blogger willie said ... (2:14 PM) :

Love Love Love

Blogger MOD PAUL said ... (2:16 PM) :

Great shot but I'm not haven the shorts. However in the context of the photo they work quite well. Adds nice color and pattern to the pic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

I'm sorry you're stuff is always fabulous, but it looks like he wearing his very large friend's underwear!

Blogger Matthew Spade said ... (2:26 PM) :

what a cool jacket and very snazzy shoes indeed

Blogger sofiasophie said ... (2:32 PM) :

ooooh!
comme il est beau!

yes this is a perfect exercice de style, made with brio and elegance.....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:44 PM) :

Wow, the dude's on the street in what look like pajama bottoms.

Under the radar? Really?

I like it, but it is not subtle to me.

Blogger FORMENTERA ♥ AGUAMARINA said ... (2:51 PM) :

funny :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:51 PM) :

this is subtle?

really?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 PM) :

I'm thinking he must have some kind of zen instrumentation or communications device hanging down by his knees. otherwise, this is really really nice.
...
but why, really, why chop the length of your legs in HALF?

Blogger Marie El. said ... (3:00 PM) :

my kind of guy!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:01 PM) :

...isn't it a shame when they dress themselves...?

Anonymous margo said ... (3:01 PM) :

don't love the pants - too costumey.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:10 PM) :

I like it as luxe pajama/lounge look. The "pants" look like oversized silk boxers. As street wear it looks ridiculous.

Blogger pete v said ... (3:28 PM) :

nothing says subtle like polka dot pants.

Blogger Jeannine 520 said ... (3:35 PM) :

It looks like he went out of the house in his pajamas and bathrobe or went into his closet blind-folded. I think it's an aesthetic disaster.

Anonymous Isabella said ... (3:36 PM) :

Anxious for the book signing in São Paulo!

Anonymous Questioner said ... (3:37 PM) :

Subtle?!? A purple raincoat, polka dot dhoti capri pants, a striped sweater and a blingy scarf? If you say so, Sart.

Is there a rule about the crotch of your pants not hanging below the hem of your raincoat? It's like he's trying to send a not so subtle message, "I have an enormous . . ."

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:38 PM) :

comme des garcons for H&M?

Anonymous davidsl said ... (3:45 PM) :

while i appreciate, i think, the pattern matching, i can't help but think that this outfit is nothing but a hot mess.

Blogger deniz said ... (4:03 PM) :

not a fan. I really admire people who can mix & match different patterns, but this is not a good example to me.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:09 PM) :

he knows how to do it!!!
thats awesome.. and purple, for this time of the year is like a countdown for newyears eve>!!!
btw, in love with this new line:::

Unreal, the people that don't get it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:48 PM) :

A wonderful mix of colour and texture. I love expressive looks. The coat and shoes are fantastic

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:26 PM) :

No.

Anonymous Liz said ... (5:36 PM) :

Yeah, definitely under the radar. Never would have noticed him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:06 PM) :

Subtle is definitely not the word. Perhaps sart is referring to how the interesting patterns and colors get utterly lost beneath the veritable shouting contest that the outfit is having with itself.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 PM) :

Yes, the pants are anything BUT "subtle"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:16 PM) :

How are diaper pants under the rader?

Blogger southerngentinL.A. said ... (6:33 PM) :

Dig all the colors and patterns. But, I don't dig the cut of the shorts. The shoes are awesome.

Anonymous Kevin said ... (7:30 PM) :

I've tried, I really have, but I absolutely cannot get behind the harem pant/drop crotch trend. Just awful.

The mixing of patterns is a neat touch. I would dig this outfit if the shorts weren't harem-style. They just ruin it.

Anonymous Kat said ... (7:37 PM) :

I love everything about this. Subtle is in the attention to detail. Thanks Sart

Anonymous Holly said ... (7:43 PM) :

He looks like he needed a cup of joe first thing that morning so he put on his coat scarf and shoes and ran out in search of one. Each piece of clothing is style...I bet he has an amazing wardrobe! The roomy drawers would make comfy sleep pjs. I like this guy, he makes me smile big!!!

Anonymous gonzo said ... (8:01 PM) :

Fantastically cool. Oozes imagination. Thank you Sart.

Blogger hi-d said ... (8:07 PM) :

Interesting, but reminds me of MC Hammer pants, gone capri...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:28 PM) :

The look is very Japanese, there are many looks in Japan that come across as awkward outside of Japan but are perfectly normal in Japan. Actually I like it but can understand if it comes across as different to anyone that hasn't seen anything similar to it before..

Blogger UESman said ... (9:37 PM) :

This falls under the category of outfits which I highly admire but could never wear personally (though I hope to in another life!)...
Really cool and funky. The purple raincoat makes him look like a wizard.....Given his Japanese roots (I'm assuming...) I'd say he has full authority to wear this wherever he likes!

nice.

Blogger kahartland said ... (10:40 PM) :

it is subtle...although you can only really see the pants. and to be honest, i was focused on the jacket and the pants, not the patterns :D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:31 AM) :

with the long satiny jacket, the skirt-pants and the tippy shoes he's clown-monk

Anonymous Claire said ... (5:53 AM) :

Drop crouch aside (they always look like the person has had a little 'accident' in their pants) I love this. I love him. Colours are great, shoes are great. it's just....great! And it makes me want to visit Japan even more now.

Blogger DENNI said ... (11:42 AM) :

he reminds me of a young Yul Brynner starring in "The King & I" What wonderful eye contact and posture. He is fearless.

Blogger Ghiblix2 said ... (3:59 PM) :

I don't think that this is all that obscure to the point that it looks like he doesn't know how to dress himself...

The patterns are bold, true. The purple cape thing is also very unusual but the overall look is very refined imo.

One of the best things I've seen on this site. Amazing.

Anonymous opiumhouse said ... (2:41 AM) :

subtle?????

Anonymous Blank Label said ... (6:46 AM) :

the purple coat is so much fun!
i especially love the shoes though.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:18 AM) :

The shooooooes! This reminds me of how much I need to get some two-tones & of how much I love them. I don't know about subtle either, but that doesn't detract from this one bit in my opinion. In fact, that pattern combination is quite amazing but definitely a bit too daring for my taste, mainly because I'd never get it that right ...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 AM) :

I'm never stuck for words, yet here we are...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:48 PM) :

I. Love. It. Unlike a lot of the people on this site, this is true originality.

Blogger Crosscurrents said ... (4:45 PM) :

Great look...understated but with a twist...you have a great eye for capturing the moment on film.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:50 PM) :

Absolutely stunning.
Tremendous sense of style.
KILLER...

Anonymous nica said ... (6:48 PM) :

the pants are weird, but the overall look is so cool! outrageous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:58 PM) :

thats cool - he is wearing my scarf...and doing it very well!

That's about as subtle as a Millwall brick.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 PM) :

rockin' look! especially love the shoes.

Anonymous Workerbee76 said ... (5:53 PM) :

He looks like a super hero in pajamas.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:57 AM) :

I love his get up.

The harem is from Comme des Garcons - looks good on Asian men.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:06 PM) :

This man must have huge kahonas to wear "Hammer" shorts.

Blogger Delphine said ... (4:08 AM) :

The - in fact - almost under the radar-ness of this outfit makes it even more interesting. A true masterpiece for who knows how to appreciate the more subtle ways of life.
