One of my major pet peeve is shoes and a belt that don't match OR coordinate AT LEAST, so when I see people who actually put effort into matching their belt w/ their shoes I really appreciate it. He's crisp.

The fit on the jeans is solid. Great shoes. I'd consider attempting the 'no sock' look if 1) the shoe would still fit and 2) if I was 15- 20 years older : P

Blogger lenmeister said ... (5:18 PM) :

Ok. nice shot indeed. But someone help me out here, how practical are leather shoes with no socks? Just curious. This trend has been going around, I cant help thinking it could be a tad uncomfortable at first.

Btw Sart, saw you at the BNY's book signing, didn't make it to your desk ther but got the book the next day (signed too ;-) Congrats again. Im loving the SArtoriaLust shop, am getting those double monk straps btw! So when can we expect the nxt book?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:00 PM) :

All the no-sock haters,
You don't have to go sock-less to achieve the look. Plenty of companies make loafer socks, which give you bare ankles with all the sanitary/comfort benefits of normal socks.

Blogger Tristan said ... (7:02 PM) :

I think its more of an American thing to wear socks with loafers/mocs.

In Europe we don't often wear socks with our loafers, (in this case shoes) In the autumn/winter we don't wear mocs anyway, they're generally worn in spring/summer.

Socks or no socks, this picture works because this dood is comfortable with himself and has reached a place in his life where he doesn't care what people have to think about him.

And if i remember correctly, i think Scott also did not wear socks with his shoes at the Paris signing

Tristan

Blogger Not Required said ... (7:09 PM) :

Dear Sartorialist, please tell us how to pull off dress shoes with no socks, without destroying the inside our shoes, getting blisters and having incredibly sweaty feet. What is the secret? Is the ability to wear dress shoes comfortably without socks simply genetic?

Blogger Michael Limaco said ... (10:10 PM) :

Guys with short jeans or pants that show off their ankles without socks annoy me because it conveys a premeditated choice not to use socks. Don't we all put socks on without thinking about it for the most part? Perhaps it's the premeditate part of this whole look that annoys me.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:18 AM) :

Great when you take shots of REAL people with sense of style! (instead of skimpy girls & boys wrapped in some flimsy fabric, they are so boring and already overexposed.)

Good quality leather shoes with an excellent fit, won't give you blisters. Especially after some wear (with socks).

Blogger Rome Reality said ... (4:29 AM) :

The little overlooked detail of a pocket square would complete this classic, ruggedly handsome look.

The men of Europe have embraced the loafer sock, giving them the barefoot look, without the discomfort. Men's loafer socks are available in the States as well. Banana Republic, REI, Amazon, are just a few locations.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:54 AM) :

Paolo 2:46 "only in Milan can jeans look so classy."

Not really, although from Italian heritage, I'm doing my bit to alleviate the general optical pollution in Sydney.

And in any case, cast your peepers towards the tattooed dude on the right, clearly in Milano, for a lesson on how not to wear jeans.

Scott's subject is possibly 15-20 years older than sloppy-joe and I bet 98% of ladies would make a bee-line toward him rather than the younger man. Why? Because he cares about his appearance.

Blogger T said ... (5:02 AM) :

are these shoes really comfortable without socks?!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:14 AM) :

I'm shocked by the lack of imagination shown by most posters here. As anon 7PM noted there are plenty of ankleless socks for men. Especially in Italy where they are called "fantasmini" which translates as "little ghosts". Saves both your feet and shoes.

I wear a lot of these socks in spring and summer when going "sockless" is super comfortable.

Leather shoes without socks are totally comfortable if you don't wear them all day long. Wear them 4 to 5 hours max, and not more than once a week for the same shoes.

MEMO TO THOSE WHO ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT SHOES WITH NO SOCKS:
These guys are wearing socks! They are wearing "fantasmini" or simply called no show socks! If you're a real fashionista you should know about this since this has been in market for years!
It's a fashion insider trick that is all the rage in Italy and most of Europe. It might seem like they are wearing no socks, but trust me they are. You just can't see them!

Here IS an example of no show socks from calvin Klein:
http://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/4/optimized/516384_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=327&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:08 AM) :

I love this blog and the intelligence of those who make comments here, but this is one of those times I really have to play the contrarian. Since I first started seeing the 'high-water' pants + shoes with no socks look early this year, I thought it looked derivative and silly, like the hip-hop fashion tic of wearing baseball caps with the visor pointing in every direction EXCEPT forward. This look is starting to spread like an aggressive cancer!
Am I the only reader of Sart who thinks this look is dorky and has already 'jumped the shark'? Anyway, if anyone wants to do this look and avoid blisters and smelly feet, here's a tip I heard from "Miami Vice" star Don Johnson: he wore those little nylon footies women use sometimes. They stay hidden, but provide the necessary comfort, FWIW.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:40 AM) :

for some reason fashion is irrelevant to this guy. There is something extraordinarily charming about him that is so attractive. Maybe it is the little cuff and no socks, or maybe it is the grampa blazer...anyway, I would like to meet him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:49 AM) :

Mmmm! Handsome and well-dressed!

Anonymous sanmiguelense said ... (9:55 AM) :

About the no socks dilemma:
If you have well made, LEATHER shoes--i.e. expensive shoes--you can wear them comfortably without socks. The point is moot for those who haven't learned that as long as you have good shoes, anything else is irrelevant!

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:37 AM) :

Love it. I think lack of socks adds the air of comfort, as opposed to the stuffiness of bound feet. If it wasn't for the regimented colors required at my pretentious coffeehouse employer, I would undoubtedly rock this ensemble.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 AM) :

But .... who is he?????

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

where to find good casual light blue jeans ...like his...it's real problem...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:54 AM) :

The no socks look is quite ugly and must be non-hygienic and detracts from the overall appearance

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:09 PM) :

I'm I the only person that thinks that the cropped rolled up look on men makes their feet look ridiculously large?

Anonymous Alessandro said ... (2:45 PM) :

I love the jacket, the jkeans, the shoes and the guy looks simpatico as well; however, i imagine the blisters and sweating with the no socks even in September Milan weather. Socks add more color, so why not put them on?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:47 PM) :

Haha, the critique on the bare feet in shoes is just hilarious! What's the problem? Don't you wash your feet everyday? Is this is some american fobia?

May I add that these 'nylon footies' are way smellier than bare feet in good quality leather shoes?

Never read any such remark about women wearing no socks in their shoes.

Shoes no socks...Hmmm... a little bit George Michael for me.

Anonymous milanese said ... (12:00 PM) :

For all those who wonder how could you wear Church with no shoes: the secret is mini invisible socks.
But I remember young men back in the eighties wearing heavy winter shoes the night in summer at Forte dei Marmi. Pier Vittorio Tondelli, the great Italian writer, has these kind of shoes with no socks in a beautiful old photo. All things do pass, but everything someday comes back.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:42 PM) :

No need for mini-socks, which I have found slip off anyway. I go sockless in dress shoes everyday, and agree that feet sweat much less if the shoes are made of quality leather. Good leather shoes also breathe, and therefore will not cause feet to smell. I sometimes go 14 hours with my feet tied into heavy leather wingtips, with little discomfort at all.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:47 PM) :

I'm an Italian, and so I guess I feel it's my duty to wear my shoes sockless. But I'll be the first to admit, there are days when my feet are begging to be set free.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:20 PM) :

I'm surprised by all the criticism. What a beautiful man who is simply, but cleanly dressed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:14 PM) :

I like this image, the look seems at the same time confortable and elegant

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

It is very interesting that so many of you people make comments about the no-socks look. Growing up in the Southern United States (Charleston, SC), no one wears socks with their loafers. Unless it is freezing cold... I feel like it is much more comfortable if you are going to be wearing quality shoes. I just never had much of a problem pulling it off, or even thought twice about it really, prior to reading these comments.

Women never wear socks, is it really any different for men?

Blogger theDavid said ... (7:06 PM) :

One day we will look back at this sans socks business with utter disgust. Meanwhile let's continue to pretend we haven't noticed a thing.
