this is amazing, the patterns fit like hell
and his face gives the rest

Blogger Jean Bieder said ... (8:35 AM) :

very excentric !!!

Blogger Style Scanner said ... (8:39 AM) :

What a dandy.

Adoring the 'David Hicks' esque patterned cloth.

Wonder if the Pierre Cardin trench is vintage?

Blogger Style Justice said ... (8:44 AM) :

I love the mixing and matching of patterns

Blogger AMK said ... (8:45 AM) :

The Pattern mixing is glorious, as well, the blue in his jacket & shirt and the blue in his eyes is a magnificent match.

Anonymous textbook said ... (8:45 AM) :

i swear, nobody else can pull this off. hb can do no wrong.

Blogger Baek said ... (8:46 AM) :

wow i like his tie n coat!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:48 AM) :

Interesting use of patterns.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:51 AM) :

No glasses?! I'm incredulous!

Blogger Max said ... (8:52 AM) :

I was hoping mustachios would come back.

Blogger sofiasophie said ... (8:53 AM) :

Amazing & surprising costume!
I kinda like it.....

Blogger Heinrock said ... (8:57 AM) :

He's totally made out of awesomesauce!

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (9:02 AM) :

That is one wild and crazy suit. Hamish is growing to look like my Uncle Ken from Northamptonshire.

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (9:05 AM) :

I love the statue of the French soldier. Gotta love those pop up shops. I ran one once that sold Titanic merchandise. Not the movie, after the 1985 discovery.

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (9:08 AM) :

Wow, that's a lot of pattern layering! The Pierre Cardin trench is glorious!

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:09 AM) :

Its electric!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:09 AM) :

The best thing in this picture is, of course, the mustache.

Blogger Anita Puksic said ... (9:09 AM) :

So cool! I love all these patterns.

Peace and love!

Blogger Allegra said ... (9:11 AM) :

It's all in the mix! oh I'm loving this print-mix.. looks stunning!

Blogger JouJou Loves You said ... (9:11 AM) :

Ooopph...love the tie and the jacket. I didn't even notice the print of his suit at first....what a visual surprise.

Blogger Jillian Hobbs said ... (9:11 AM) :

I love that he is using a pattern. I for one have been guilty of neglecting pattern and colour and it's very sad. Quite refreshing to see this.

Thank you! Hoping I may get to run into you in Manhattan somewhere today!

Blogger . . . said ... (9:13 AM) :

oh Hamish....so awesome.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

I'm not sure how I feel about this suit, but I have to say that the whole outfit looks great! And I guess that's what counts, right??!!

Glad the street pix are back... we missed you!

Blogger AGNESAADAMCZAK said ... (9:15 AM) :

original mix ;-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:17 AM) :

Oh. My. God. He looks great with the mustache and lack of glasses!
And that suit...I am a woman, and I'm drooling for it!

Blogger Michael said ... (9:17 AM) :

No disrespect to Mr. Bowles, but YIKES!

Blogger Kwil said ... (9:17 AM) :

Love the multiple textures, shades and layers. All surprisingly works so well together. It's as if he took the color of his mustache into consideration!

Blogger kitchenartist said ... (9:19 AM) :

31 flavours of awesome. And I love the 'tache, it totally works on him.

Blogger Un posto speciale said ... (9:19 AM) :

Perhaps I'm not so fashion to appreciate but there's something which doesn't match.. Too many different squares, too many colors, too much of everything.
The best is the self confident face who wears the combination

Blogger Christina said ... (9:20 AM) :

I guess when there are just that many patterns going on they all cancel each other out and it works!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:23 AM) :

Such a different way of dressing. linojratelier@blogspot.com

Blogger Stefan said ... (9:25 AM) :

The common thread of blue helps.. definitely an eye-popper. Wonderful trench. I would have gone with a more solid suit..

Blogger Un posto speciale said ... (9:25 AM) :

Perhaps I'm not so fashion to appreciate but there's something which doesn't match.. Too many squares, too many colors, too much of everything. The best is the self confident face who wears it

Blogger jazzy cat said ... (9:31 AM) :

Less patterns would be nice, the suit, especially the pants results it too much..

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (9:35 AM) :

Great shot, Sart. That's a wonderful shirt, but the rest of the ensemble is not to my liking. There's too much going on, a clash of patterns and colours. Love the haircut!

In general Mr. Bowles is a bit too eccentric for my taste. Funnily enough, in this photo he looks like (the American comedian) Jeff Foxworthy's more creative brother.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:36 AM) :

This is like couture; hardly anyone wears it but it gives a vision of what is possible.
Personally, I find it overwhelming but admire the deft mix of pattern. Do love all the blues.
(Yes, I recognize who he is.)

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:37 AM) :

Hamish Bowles has KICK ASS STYLE that's for sure!!! His Paris apartment featured in "World of Interiors" this month displays the same flair he does in his dress. The mustache looks wonderful on him.

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (9:42 AM) :

Wow, the combination of patterns works on him. Not sure it would work on anyone else! The Pierre Cardin trench must be vintage, he must have dug deep in his closet for it!

Blogger The Chukker said ... (9:46 AM) :

As usual, HB can pull off ANY look. He is probably one of the most daring and stylish people I've met (in London, 2003). Gracious chap.

Anonymous Holly said ... (9:54 AM) :

He's a true fashion genius...Its undeniable!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 AM) :

ugh!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 AM) :

Wonderful outfit! His suit is from Dries Van Noten. I like also his moustache, a nice dandy. Dries is my favorite designer!

Blogger a reference said ... (9:58 AM) :

this is one of the best photos i've seen of him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:01 AM) :

The blue colors are a marvellous match to his blue eyes, but he should replace the shiny buttons with more "quiet" ones.

Blogger ethan.jayne said ... (10:09 AM) :

Ohhh my goodness. Like everyone else said, the patterns are riveting.

A little quirk that I liked about the jacket was it's lack of patterns, and the buttons of course.

Blogger Hayley said ... (10:14 AM) :

Now he could pull off anything! On anyone else I swear this ensemble would look ridiculous.
I love his trench coat - I really want one now!

Great shot!

xx

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:14 AM) :

interesting how context changes meaning. because that looks a lot like a pimp's suit from a Blaxploitation film.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:15 AM) :

Is that suit Etro? When I saw it at the store, I thought it was a little too flashy, but my does Hamish quieten it down superbly. Anyone who can mix these patterns together without making you dizzy or want to lose your stomach is a genius, which, of course, our Mr Bowles is.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:02 AM) :

so so fabulous....i'd love to see the shoes....and for some reason I'm curious what color his undergarments are....I'm not being crass...it just popped into my head. He's had such a good time with the rest of it...

Anonymous lisa said ... (11:30 AM) :

Love this blog!
Love NYC.
Thank yor for bringing this to me!

Anonymous davidsl said ... (11:37 AM) :

not so sure about that suit, myself. it looks like pajamas. but i do love the colors and patterns of the shirt and ties.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:41 AM) :

Sorry, but what dies it together are his tie, shirt and coat. The suit itself lends nothing more than an abominable shape and discreetly distasteful pattern. Seen w/o said additions, or in other combinations (or even w/o the coat) - his suit would be ridiculed at best.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:48 AM) :

how daring is this man!

Blogger norawoah said ... (11:49 AM) :

jeeze I just love on him.
Where are yer glasses Hamish? You still look incredibly dapper.

Blogger Flora Márquez said ... (11:59 AM) :

Everytime my friend and I see a person who´s dressing like this, we say "MUY SARTORIALIST" (Very sartorialist)..

So:

VERY SARTORIALIST!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:19 PM) :

Eh all the patterns are held together by the solid coat. Take it off, he looks like bozo the clown.

Blogger Metro Profile said ... (12:21 PM) :

It's really too much and overwhelming. I like the shirt, but with the tie and suit, it's too jarring at least for my taste. Also, he has a rather small face and the bulky suit overwhelms.

Blogger Claudette said ... (12:26 PM) :

Wow, what a great combination of patterns!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:31 PM) :

age becomes him!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:32 PM) :

and what a cool pierre cardin trench:)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:35 PM) :

If the colours were brighter, this would totally fall apart. It's the muted tones (with the bright tie) that keep it becoming too busy.

Blogger BB said ... (12:43 PM) :

There's nothing that makes me happier than someone so unafraid to put pattern on pattern. Love.

http://www.bargainbex.blogspot.com/

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:55 PM) :

This is so brilliant!

Blogger b.duval johnson said ... (1:13 PM) :

I was a fan, but now I'm in adoration, nobody does it like Hamish. This weekend I bought a suit of similiar pattern, but single breasted and with shorts (Dries Van Norten,) and I hope I do it as much justice...ROCK ON HAMISH.

Blogger joshylola said ... (1:17 PM) :

Too much, but..I love patterns

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:24 PM) :

He looks much better than I'm used to and the outfit is great. Very nice combination of prints!

Blogger Jeannine 520 said ... (1:26 PM) :

The moustache isn't doing him any favors. As a matter of fact, it's really dating his look. Hammish, please lose he moustache, you'll look much, much better.

Anonymous Andrea said ... (1:27 PM) :

oh wow! <3

Blogger Well Done said ... (1:32 PM) :

I like the thinking but, I think it's too much. I think the tie should be a solid.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:33 PM) :

overload, too much going on.
eyes can't rest, must look away.

Blogger Elicia said ... (1:35 PM) :

combination of many patterns, yet he totally pulls it off looking calm, cool and collected.

Blogger Berg&Berg said ... (2:21 PM) :

Eccentiric is an understatement..However, from what i know, it suits his personality

Anonymous meeelo said ... (2:23 PM) :

this makes my eyes fall out of my head out of sheer delight! i wish my whole world was patterned like this!!!

Blogger Valerie said ... (2:31 PM) :

Nice tie

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:38 PM) :

He looks ridiculous.

Anonymous °°matias said ... (2:56 PM) :

Honestly, if anybody younger than 40 would pull off such an outfit, I would definitely say that he "overpaced" and looks like a clown and I would hate it... but if men of a certain age come around with such a look it´s incredibly cool, because they incorporate a certain respectful aura!! Great look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:57 PM) :

POST THE TOUR DATES PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Blogger hi-d said ... (2:59 PM) :

Oooohhhh....I love it! The suit (jacket) is so amazing! Love the colors and patterns!

i wonder, do you ever edit your photographs? like the lighting, exposure, contrast, etc..

Blogger joann tucker said ... (3:16 PM) :

wow. just, wow. wonderful.

Blogger CW said ... (3:24 PM) :

Too busy. Adding the tie was overkill. Just the shirt and suit with a solid tie would work. Just the suit and the tie with a solid shirt would work. The three together, though, look clownish.

Nice trench coat, but it isn't a key part of this gent's look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:34 PM) :

Can anyone tell me what suit that is? Thanks!

Anonymous Risha said ... (3:36 PM) :

well dressed indeed!

Blogger The Spicers said ... (3:40 PM) :

Hamish can mix patterns like no one else. Love him.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:42 PM) :

the trench anchors the outfit. superbly balanced ensemble.

Blogger lets play a game like musical statues said ... (4:17 PM) :

wow, he looks legendary. mixing all those patterns together, yet still looks really simplistic.

Blogger Donna Camacho said ... (4:25 PM) :

I really like the variety of patterns. overall the outfit, lovesit!

Blogger m. said ... (4:53 PM) :

wow, heavy pattern mix! I like it.

I like his expression too. :) symphatetic. he reminds me of someone I knew, but I don't know who.

Anonymous theAlbanian said ... (4:57 PM) :

this is not every body's cup of tea but it's cool and ballsy and it reminds me of Tim Burton movies...

Blogger scram. said ... (5:02 PM) :

Come on. Really? No way. There is a fine line between high fashion and ridiculousness.

Anonymous Maria Pena said ... (5:24 PM) :

Blogger najee said ... (5:28 PM) :

Hamish has such a genius way with prints, patterns and color. This is the perfect color story for back to the city dressing.

I love all the different patterns, amazing, perfect mix, only him :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:41 PM) :

Why can't he take over at American Vogue? They need his help desperately! This trench coat is amazing~~vintage? Great color. I would love to have coffee with someone as daring as this~~what an imagination! Old school tailoring with a modern/zany twist~~magical!

Flusser: It's just been revoked.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:51 PM) :

Is it already cold enough in NYC to be wearing all those layers?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:04 PM) :

Too much color

Anonymous Wildgans said ... (6:05 PM) :

wow!
his face looks like the lovely face of one of my lovers, his profession was climbing mountains, now he`s dead, falling down.
I bought your book for my sister as present for her 55. birthday. wonderful fotos- like here!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:06 PM) :

Wow, it's amazing how he could make all those patterns work together. He looks put together all right.

Blogger Yoli said ... (6:10 PM) :

Very dapper but it takes a certain personality to be able to pull this off, he does, very well.

Blogger Claire said ... (6:28 PM) :

Wow. I REALLY like this. Even down to the buttons on his coat. Brilliant!

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:30 PM) :

The Pierre Cardin coat is definitely key here, together with the awesome pattern and cut of the suit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:36 PM) :

This guy pull it off very well, and I love that look on him. It wouldn't be me tough. BTW, for non americans, who is Hamish Bowles ?

Blogger MOD PAUL said ... (6:41 PM) :

WOW!! He pulls it off.. Is that a vintage Pierre Cardin trench or a new? Can't tell but the buttons are sweet. Suit, Tie, Shirt it just all works. Get in there my son!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:50 PM) :

A stylish modern-day Sherlock Holmes anyone?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:01 PM) :

That's Style!
WOW!

Blogger GZ said ... (7:24 PM) :

Wow. Everything (and there is a lot here) works with the rest. The outfit is so self-referential it's unbelievable, but it works a charm.

I salute you, Mr Bowles!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:29 PM) :

Great style , but i think: Only Jacket without trousers and another tie , but very intrepid his style
sorry for my english

Sr. Bon Vivant.

Blogger The Muse said ... (7:29 PM) :

What a strikingly beautiful image... Truly regal.

Blogger Tim McFarlane said ... (7:49 PM) :

If these pieces were not in the same color family, this would fall apart. I don't really like the tie pattern nor colors, but otherwise, I like how he's carrying this off.

Blogger tanya said ... (8:21 PM) :

He looks like a character from Gankutsuou! I swear, that animated series has the best print-on-print ideas ever.

Blogger Rimi said ... (8:23 PM) :

wow....the first look i had at this picture...
his eyes matching the outfit. its almost as if the outfit was not made for him, but for his eyes...

Blogger Michael Joseph Owens said ... (8:29 PM) :

I'm in total lust with this man, and it's not just because he looks smashing. He's especially sexy here in all his dueling, Vuillard-inspired patterns and textures.

Blogger The Sluice Box said ... (10:53 PM) :

That one pictures tells us that fall is just around the corner. Love the way he telegraphs the change of season via his clothing.

http://thesluicebox.blogspot.com/

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:34 AM) :

he looks brokenhearted.

Anonymous Blank Label said ... (1:42 AM) :

the suit pattern is similar to something you would have on PJs. I am not a big fan of the suit, but the coat is amazing, as is the tie. the shirt goes terribly with the outfit because the outfit is busy enough as it is, and is even busier with the added design of the shirt. I would have gone with a solid color shirt

Blogger Joy Mars said ... (2:07 AM) :

This reminds me of a modern art movement. Now let me see... what is it's name?

I know -- cubism!

But I wouldn't want to hang him on a wall.

Blogger Jennifer said ... (2:59 AM) :

You go, Hamish Bowles.

I always love the way he puts himself together.

It's funny how playful his manner of dress is, and how it contrasts with the seriousness of his expression.

...like the 'stache too!

The tie is diVINE!

Anonymous mike r said ... (10:14 AM) :

if he tried for once to wear a "normal" suit, he would not be recognized at all. i believe for people like hamish, this is the most important thing- above all to be seen (thus the get-up). otherwise, he would just be passed over for the ordinary (or below average) fellow that he is.

Blogger Jazzbuff630 said ... (1:19 PM) :

I like the whole ensemble, but what I am really digging is the 1970's Pierre Cardin trench.

This is going up on the bulletin board.

Blogger HW90 said ... (1:42 PM) :

I can not believe how well this works. Shoes? Blue suede Lobb William's?

Blogger mette said ... (3:40 PM) :

I´ll have to be honest. I don´t like his outfit. There is just too much thought in it, too much. He does attract attention though.

Blogger Dale Jefferies said ... (5:17 PM) :

Oh my God, is that a Courreges trench... ? Hamish Bowles is a fucking legend.

Blogger Mr. M said ... (8:29 PM) :

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:10 PM) :

Presence. And once again, the perfect word verification (how does this happen?). Here it is:

"paterin"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:09 PM) :

I love the way he has mixed the different shades of blue. The mixed patterns, themselves, are the icing on the cake. But i feel best of all is the matching of the golden orange in the tie and the golden Cardin buttons. Hamish is a great inspiration to me.

Blogger h.thacker said ... (9:05 AM) :

i admire his confidence to carry so much pattern, and the plain blue coat balances the whole outfit
but what i love most of all, is those buttons
where can i get some!

Every once in a while, I see a photo that makes me wish I were a man so I could dress like this.

Amazing. Show stopper status. This is literally eye candy to me, I love men who dress so dapper. It's just so clean, tailored and complimenting. Can't get enough!
