Comments on "The Gentleman of Ft. Greene, Brooklyn"
GREAT picture...!
"Dapper Dan". Love it all! Looks like he has a couple of good stories up his sleeve.
xx
You found this guy in Brooklyn? Fabulous. B) I think we rarely find this in NYC anymore. What a gem he is!
Le sigh...
They just don't make 'em like they used to!
Men aren't dapper any longer. What happened? He has such a marvelous presence. I hope you listened to him for awhile. I imagine he has some wisdom to impart.
Thanks again for reminding us that serene and confident personal style always trumps fashion.
very very dapper indeed..great shoes.
He looks great! Looks like the type of person I just want to have a long conversation with!

Now there is a face that tells a thousand stories! Great pic
il be dressing like that at that age !!!
www.fashionwhatsnext.blogspot.com
So dapper! Reminds me of Cab Calloway
Ft.Greene is a wonderful area full of great stories... I'm still a Manhattan fan..but to walk around Ft. Greene and stop or be stopped for 'stoop stories' is priceless. Regarding this photo (& this blog for the stories you let us create around them)...also priceless.
Thank you for what you do.
More proof of how strong a classic style statement is.
that man has so much swagger
So elegantly put together, from his head to his toes
A flaneur! Elegance can be found everywhere and this is a perfect example. But the greatness of our times is also how the "dapper man" has expanded its meaning and can be applied to a variety of styles.
Regards, The Urban
He looks like he's from New Orleans. Anyways great photo!
Not a fan of spectators but here they look bang on.
love this!
Elegant, masculine, chic, individual. Oh, I adore everything about this man.
These men are few and far between. I have a great old Black dapper friend such as this man, and can you believe his fashion secret is to shop completely second hand? He says he does this so he can save money to travel around the world.
perfect. love his character and personality.
Now, you're cooking with gas! Please don't go to Paris, France anymore, (at least for pics of the menfolk) they can't hold a candle to this man.
Great shoes...
Bravo!
And the award goes to the gentleman of Ft. Green...I can't see anything amiss
MAD dapper!! And he knows it!!!
Oh great picture !!
You have got to love the hat and the shoes! Great picture!:-)))
I love it!
Very Sharp! Very "old school" Brooklyn!!!!! Back to when people dressed up everyday!
Yolanda
OMG love it! How cute <3
So elegant! But it's a little too warm in the northeast right now to be dressing like that. He looks happy and comfortable anyway.
this is the kind of man a woman wants to fall in love with, cool, confident and cultured.
No words... what amazing style!
everything about his look is really good, especially his shoes.
He should be in a movie in Hollywood.
i miss fort green....
Spectators rule!
And I'll bet he's the most charming of fellows.
That hat!
That crested, cream cardi!
Those two-tone shoes!
I love it.
love love love it!! my kind of picture ;)
www.getobsessed.blogspot.com
awww adorable!
It's sad that more men - of any age - don't make the effort anymore like this good looking man! No younger man in old sweatpants, t-shirt, baggy jeans, beat up sneakers, is going to hold a candle to him. Put him in your next book!
Fabulous shot and he has the best attitude with those fantastic shoes!
Papa's got a new pair of shoes. Luv it.
The word Dapper was invented to describe men like him!
Fabulous picture. I wonder what the pattern on his shirt is?
magnifique
I adore those jazz shoes, doesn't this photo make you want say and sit awhile?
http://fashionpearlsofwisdom.blogspot.com/
those shoes!and the cardigan! so true to his age.
When I see this kind of pictures I feel rare... So sweet. ;-)
Best!
Jose
This Gentleman is always dressed to the "Nines".
Clothes are always coordinated and well tailored.
He used to be a dancer. And is a beloved fixture in the Fort Greene community.
Gladman
the words "smart" and "well dressed" come to mind...
Classic indeed!
I would let this tall, immaculately dressed and elegant man swing me around the dance floor. You know he's got stories to tell by looking at that smile.
Butterflies, fold-in-chairs, and healthy sidewalk arguments on after Sunday church. Very New York, particularly along Essex Street south of Delancey.
Makes me miss my old nabe'. Great look.
His glasses are my highlight as they're the perfect balance between age appropriate and yet cooler than anything else out there.
Plus the cardigan is a delight.
such a different time...I love that people still rock that style :)Would we have noticed him in the 70's?
I love this picture! He reminds me of my Husband's uncle! :)
This man is ADORABLE.
Aww I love him! Quite the fashionable gentleman! I bet he was quite the ladies man in his day, probably still is!
xo

Now, there is a man that knows how to wear a hat! Bet he didn't even have to check his Emily Post to know when and where to...
My hero...
Passport Foodie
awww, hes a stunna
if only i was about 80 yrs older
;)))
amazing!
marrrryyyyyy meeee
Favorite!
so cool. soo dapper. thats style thats cultivated over years. men my age need to start now.
Hehe, he is so cool! I love the cardigan and shoes.
Peace and love!
I think I would like to be friends with this man. He probably has great stories to tell.
Now thats style!! The shoes, the hat, the cardigan! Lovely!!
THIS is what I call classy!
Stone cold cool.
I saw this guy on the bkcircus blog before...not sure if the pic was taken by the sartorialist (but for some reason i feel like it was)...but i remember that style/those shoes any day!!!
www.blackfruitpunch.com
So cool, he can wear layers in the summer!
Perfectly executing some Carib/Brooklyn flair...
He could be in Port of Spain or Havana, but this is how we do in Ft. Greene!
He obviously knows what he's doing with color and pattern, and the (what looks like) gradient tortoise shells are just smart.
The true test of elegance is how one dresses at home with no where to go.
wow! that's what I call Style and character, not just fashion
He has got the old school cool factor goin' on! It's a great shot!
I like how even his lawn chair matches his shirt. I wonder if he has different chairs for different outfits?
Great shot
He has great taste. The shoes are awesome!
I saw this gentleman on the subway platform in Ft. Greene a few weeks back and remembered that he was dressed with such style and grace, I also remember saying to myself that the Satorialist must take a photo of him right at this moment... this picture put a smile on my face again today!!!
Amazing photo. You can tell this man has a ton of personality and his clothes show it.
http://fashionroadkill-halifax.blogspot.com
See, this is what real style is. When a man can wear spectators, trousers, a cardigan, patterned button down, a hat and a pinky ring, you know he has perspective. Bravo.

He is gorgeous.
this image reminds me a great deal of my grandfather who i call HotWheels. He's still around and he wears all of these same things even the ring. it's something of a different era - when a crease in the slacks was important as were different social graces. reading the above comments only helped to remind me even more of how amazing my Hot Wheels is. And yes, I have started to do audio recordings of interviews with him. he doesn't so much go on to impart his wisdom as much as to tell the stories of his life and having been silly or worked hard bought pretty cars, loving his family and spending time with his friends. that and going out for BLT's and rootbeer when I go home and see him.
Thanks very sincerely
classic. well-groomed. and i bet sharp as a tack!
Yeah, this man really knows how to dress dapper!
I love him! saw him in ft.greene once and he just caught my eyes!! x
The Guy from Outkast must have known this man because he has stolen his style head to toe. I love it!!!
He looks like Bill Cosby! lol but a very nice picture!
I know this cat, he's definitely official when it comes to being classic"...
-chris jovan
now that's a cool cat!
nice....
Very dapper. A breath of fresh air compared to most everyday men.
AWESOME, GREATPIC.
well,I think he looks good all the time because i've known him for twenty years. No man can top him in dressing and smelling good, also He is a good man,I wish him long life.
that last guy looks dapper!
http://www.twolia.com/shop
Just Perfect!!
how classy and elegant. i bet his fingernails are nicely groomed too. love it.
Great. Showing that brooklyn has style.
http://supreemlife.blogspot.com/
perfection ... the picture, the gentleman!
Dapper! Wonder what he has to say.
This is true style. You don't see this around anymore. Hopefully you shoot this gentleman more often.
This picture made me smile. If you can get up in the morning and put an ensemble like that on, old age can't be too bad.
is that you bill cosby??? XD
Impeccable.
What's not to love about this guy?
Made me smile!
You either have it or you don't. Style cannot be bought! :)
I love this!!
Timeless...Classy Gentleman...I love him.
Look at those shoes! How wonderful! And that gorgeous cream hat...
I love the pride, the self-respect and respect for others this man shows in his wonderful presentation. He and we cannot feel depressed. And now I hear he smells good too!
If only there were more stylish gentlemen like him.

If only I dressed as well as he for a little jaunt outside.
He looks fantastic. I love mature stylish people -their personal styles always seem so autentic <3
xxx
From my dad's era. Might even be one of his poker buddies.
Funny, when I attempt to dress this way (even at the "young" age of 49), people think I'm playing "dress up".
I see older gentleman like this at the Lenox Lounge up in Harlem.
This is such an amazing shot! He has great style, I wish all men would dress like him.
this man looks so FABULOUS. but i wish people didn't want everyone to dress like this! he looks special because he is unique. even though he wears such heavy pieces i guess the white makes it summer appropriate. love it love it.
can't wait to run into him soon since i just moved here!
This world-class charm transcends place. Funny, after having spent part of the summer in Ft. Greene and part in the South Pacific, I am taken by the classic styling of men who know how to rock a fedora and cardy.
This gents wingtips are ultra-chic, too.
The entire look is tied together by his spectacles.
I feel that there are so many options available for men to express the totality of their aesthetic sensibilities.
This photo has now become one my top favs, Sarto!

This. is greatness. I especially love that he seems to know that he's always been this cool of a cat. Great catch.
he's adorable!! I love when older people still have great style
how classy! awesome!
How can you comment on his shoes without noting the glasses, the pinkie ring, and the manicure!
He's been There. Oh yeah, and he knows what's happening. Seen it come, and seen it go. The shoes tell his whole story. Where the rubber meets the road. A legend.
he's gorgeous--I love how relaxed and elegant he is
HE ROCKED IT!
Too bad you couldn't get Anna Piaggi in her black and white outfit and this gentleman together for a portrait!
I'm really digging the cardigan.
he reminds me of Compay Segundo! Such a classic look.
Nothing new to add because of course like many others, the word that came to mind was 'dapper' tres dapper.
Hmmm i wonder if he can tap dance?
A man of taste.
Why are there only a few of these gents ever anywhere at one time? The world needs more.
yes, he can dance any type of dancing, just bring it on. says jacqueline" we danced for twenty year in clubs and dance halls.
I love how you capture my neighborhood.
Reminds me of Havana.
this man is handson in his suits and street clothes, looking cool and relaxed, welcome to ft.green, this is what it's all about downtown Brooklyn
Classic! I love it!
fantastic photo, it's so genuine
play. on. player.
This man has got it going on! I can only hope to be dressing this well at his age.
This man comes in to my bar often and orders a chardonnay. He usually smokes a cigar with it, and doesn't talk much. Every time he's dressed beautifully, and always a hat.
I would sleep with him just to have access to his wardrobe.
great picture i love it!!!!
His name is Waldo and he is 81. He is the best dressed man in Fort Greene. I have photographed him as well, and we ended up talking for a while. He is 1/4 Irish, just like me.
