On the Street......The Dancer, Melbourne

I think he is so unusually beautiful. The posture, the masculine neck, the small almost elfin ears, and the way his clothes hang on him.

I'm often asked in interviews what I look for when I'm out shooting. I reply that I just try to keep my mind open so I can see what I'm not expecting. This is a perfect example. I would never say I was looking for this type of shot, but when I see it I can't pass it up.

This is one of the most interesting shots I would have to say because his beauty doesn't just come out and strike you its very subtle. He has great lines. He just looks so sad. Love the emotion of this shot.

Blogger Crimsonite said ... (10:58 AM) :

His head looks in disproportionate size to to his neck, and vice versa, it's definitely unusual. I wonder how he would look with long hair? Hmm...

He's definitley got something about him, and agree that it's a beautiful shot. But to be honest, Great outfit if he's just on his way to/from studio, but not so much for every day walking about?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:05 PM) :

In your comments you didn't critique his clothes, you discussed your work methods. I don't think it's really fair to comment on someone's looks. It's ok to mention hairstyle or clothing choices but people can't help what they were born with, you know? This comment meant for post-ers, not Sart because your remarks were appreciative and positive but I do think this is dicey territory.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:09 PM) :

I love when you post photographs with comments... it all makes sense there, and not just depends on what is established or common... Thant's the real contribuition of the Sartorialist: the uprising of the other, the different, the alterity... divergences over mainstream.
And congratulations for your 98!

Anonymous Romos said ... (8:15 PM) :

Yes - totally a fantastic shot! I wonder however, is he extremely tired? He appears to be maudlin, morose, or very fatigued. I guess the life of a dancer is one of endless hours, and poverty too. These elements can wear on one's appearance.

Keep up the great work!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:32 PM) :

i think i just fall in love with him..

Blogger J. said ... (8:57 PM) :

he would -fly- as a model in japan!

Blogger erin nuts said ... (9:45 PM) :

Is he actually a dancer? He almost looks a little skinny to be one, male dancers are pretty built...I'm mostly just curious, because even if he's not it's a perfect title/description. "The dancer" is exactly the essence you get looking at him. Supple and fine but totally masculine.

...regardless, I'm obsessed. Contact info please.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:48 PM) :

These photos capture something essential that I love about Melbourne and its people. I think it is the combination of physical beauty that just exists of itself (not for the sake of outside attention or glamour) and an interiority with complex shadings - you feel like it could lead you towards something interesting and vital in life.

I doubt that I am expressing myself well, but in his appearance, I find someone with a style (a way of being in the world) that is far more captivating than someone exhibiting their knowledge of the lastest fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 PM) :

Dancers are interesting people, theyre edje but still beautiful in some way...

Blogger Ellen said ... (9:58 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

Beautiful.

This shot captures the personality that most dancers have. This guy may or may not be a dancer, but i have friends who live their lives as dancers and this shot pretty much sum some up. Comfortable "this works for me so whatever" outfit in breezy monochromatic colours.

Not all dancers are or have to be built. Most are pretty lithe..

He's got beautiful skin and a very nice skintone. Interesting features too. I could be wrong, but he looks like he's of part-asian descent..

Anonymous incubi. said ... (10:39 AM) :

never commented on your blog before..but there's this incredible subtle beauty in this picture that is just.. very captivating. the close up..it's almost like his separate features don't match up, yet it seems natural and in balance at the same time. don't know how to put it. just very amazing, thank you for that. lovely discription too in the post.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

He has something of Botticelli's beauty. Especially in his eye look. Very nice.

Anonymous S. said ... (12:55 PM) :

"you feel like it could lead you towards something interesting and vital in life"

I totally love what Anon 9:48 said but would add that you can find this not just in Melbourne but anywhere. It is just rare and has to do with following the ecstatic life. That's one of the great things about the performing arts. And yes, his hands are beautiful, too.

I like your explanation of why he is compelling. Nice. Personally though, I don't find him so. His look is too sloppy for me and his neck too wide for his features. But that's just me - I like how subjective beauty is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:34 AM) :

I just decided I'm going to print this and put it on my wall.

I absolutely agree. He is elfin and beautiful. The beautiful contours of his neck and head just make me wanna pick up some charcoal and DRAW!!! You, Mr. S, have a most wonderful eye. Your blog is a great thing... you see and appreciate how beautiful, interest, and nice people look, as opposed to only fashion and trends. In that, your blog has a great sense of honesty. Honest appreciation of beauty and intrigue in the people around us.
