On the Street......The Dancer, Melbourne

I think he is so unusually beautiful. The posture, the masculine neck, the small almost elfin ears, and the way his clothes hang on him.

I'm often asked in interviews what I look for when I'm out shooting. I reply that I just try to keep my mind open so I can see what I'm not expecting. This is a perfect example. I would never say I was looking for this type of shot, but when I see it I can't pass it up.

WOW...So different & so interesting...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:59 AM) :

This is one of the most interesting shots I would have to say because his beauty doesn't just come out and strike you its very subtle. He has great lines. He just looks so sad. Love the emotion of this shot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:02 AM) :

If you cover either side of his head, he looks so totally different on both sides!! Nice.

Anonymous Jenny Peterson said ... (10:03 AM) :

Beatiful shot. And thanks for explaining a little about how you work.

Blogger Pret a Porter P said ... (10:04 AM) :

there's something about him, he has that je ne sais quoi.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 AM) :

He reminds me of Link from Zelda.

Anonymous suzanne nelson said ... (10:06 AM) :

I agree, he is incredibly beautiful. he looks like a renaissance sculpture or if he's just stepped out of a painting by Botticelli. thanks for seeing and posting this, Sart.

Blogger Larapixie said ... (10:08 AM) :

very special look!i like it!

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (10:15 AM) :

Great find. The perhaps the greatest? Compared to all the other people on your blog, this guy is the most fashionable person without even trying.

this is a face i could stare at a long time...

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:45 AM) :

Interesting. I like...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:46 AM) :

he looks very tired - like he has given his body and soul over the past few days.
that's what's i find so beautiful about dance!

Blogger Hanna Persson said ... (10:47 AM) :

Is he working as a dancer?

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:51 AM) :

I'm getting that hairstyle!!! amazing!

Blogger stephanie-sarah said ... (10:54 AM) :

he definitely has grace :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:55 AM) :

i would have guess he is a guitarist than a dancer because of his pose. but i love his resolute lips

Blogger Crimsonite said ... (10:58 AM) :

His head looks in disproportionate size to to his neck, and vice versa, it's definitely unusual. I wonder how he would look with long hair? Hmm...

Blogger Soren Lorensen said ... (11:00 AM) :

he looks so angelic

but then rough about the edges

i want to see him dance.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:27 AM) :

He's definitley got something about him, and agree that it's a beautiful shot. But to be honest, Great outfit if he's just on his way to/from studio, but not so much for every day walking about?

Blogger Ashley said ... (11:31 AM) :

He's very striking. I love his hair!

Blogger Jazzbuff630 said ... (11:49 AM) :

Blogger JMitchell said ... (12:55 PM) :

i am in love with this photo. he's beautiful and his outfit is so cool. this is one of my favorite shots. everything just works so well and he just grabs my attention.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:05 PM) :

In your comments you didn't critique his clothes, you discussed your work methods. I don't think it's really fair to comment on someone's looks. It's ok to mention hairstyle or clothing choices but people can't help what they were born with, you know? This comment meant for post-ers, not Sart because your remarks were appreciative and positive but I do think this is dicey territory.

Blogger cami falcão said ... (1:06 PM) :

Blogger Huyen said ... (1:57 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:59 PM) :

wow ... and look at his graceful hands. great shot.

Blogger Gabriela García de Cortázar G. said ... (2:09 PM) :

I love when you post photographs with comments... it all makes sense there, and not just depends on what is established or common... Thant's the real contribuition of the Sartorialist: the uprising of the other, the different, the alterity... divergences over mainstream.
And congratulations for your 98!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:47 PM) :

A few days ago, I was wondering how an angel might look like and there it is!, right down to the calm demeanor and the uplifted gaze.
Very beautiful.

Oh... yes!

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:05 PM) :

Two words: In. Love.

Anonymous Romos said ... (8:15 PM) :

Yes - totally a fantastic shot! I wonder however, is he extremely tired? He appears to be maudlin, morose, or very fatigued. I guess the life of a dancer is one of endless hours, and poverty too. These elements can wear on one's appearance.

Keep up the great work!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:32 PM) :

i think i just fall in love with him..

Blogger J. said ... (8:57 PM) :

he would -fly- as a model in japan!

Blogger erin nuts said ... (9:45 PM) :

Is he actually a dancer? He almost looks a little skinny to be one, male dancers are pretty built...I'm mostly just curious, because even if he's not it's a perfect title/description. "The dancer" is exactly the essence you get looking at him. Supple and fine but totally masculine.

...regardless, I'm obsessed. Contact info please.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:48 PM) :

These photos capture something essential that I love about Melbourne and its people. I think it is the combination of physical beauty that just exists of itself (not for the sake of outside attention or glamour) and an interiority with complex shadings - you feel like it could lead you towards something interesting and vital in life.

I doubt that I am expressing myself well, but in his appearance, I find someone with a style (a way of being in the world) that is far more captivating than someone exhibiting their knowledge of the lastest fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 PM) :

Dancers are interesting people, theyre edje but still beautiful in some way...

Blogger Ellen said ... (9:58 PM) :

what a beautiful boy. he could wear anything and make it look great.

Anonymous Hannah said ... (10:14 PM) :

He's beautiful! I love everything about these shots.

Blogger Marvin said ... (10:40 PM) :

This reminds me of Prada this spring..Long tee shirt and shorts. I am a dancer too. Finding cool mes dance wear is hard. One has to improvise as this guy did.. This is so inspiring. Thanks!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:11 AM) :

He is very ethereal and serene.... yet he is very confidence and comfortable... he is a very beautiful with inner peace.. thanks for capturing him to us...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

This shot captures the personality that most dancers have. This guy may or may not be a dancer, but i have friends who live their lives as dancers and this shot pretty much sum some up. Comfortable "this works for me so whatever" outfit in breezy monochromatic colours.

Not all dancers are or have to be built. Most are pretty lithe..

He's got beautiful skin and a very nice skintone. Interesting features too. I could be wrong, but he looks like he's of part-asian descent..

Anonymous incubi. said ... (10:39 AM) :

never commented on your blog before..but there's this incredible subtle beauty in this picture that is just.. very captivating. the close's almost like his separate features don't match up, yet it seems natural and in balance at the same time. don't know how to put it. just very amazing, thank you for that. lovely discription too in the post.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

He has something of Botticelli's beauty. Especially in his eye look. Very nice.

Anonymous S. said ... (12:55 PM) :

"you feel like it could lead you towards something interesting and vital in life"

I totally love what Anon 9:48 said but would add that you can find this not just in Melbourne but anywhere. It is just rare and has to do with following the ecstatic life. That's one of the great things about the performing arts. And yes, his hands are beautiful, too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:06 PM) :

he looks like cristiano ronaldo

Blogger arms.akimbo said ... (5:32 PM) :

Good work matching the shoes to the blouse. Love that swan neck.

Blogger Metro Profiles LA said ... (8:39 PM) :

I like your explanation of why he is compelling. Nice. Personally though, I don't find him so. His look is too sloppy for me and his neck too wide for his features. But that's just me - I like how subjective beauty is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:34 AM) :

I just decided I'm going to print this and put it on my wall.

"Why I plan to marry a Japanese man."

I'm convinced he's half Asian. And if he's not I want him to be. Ughhh so beautiful

Blogger Chip Bell said ... (4:25 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:01 PM) :

I absolutely agree. He is elfin and beautiful. The beautiful contours of his neck and head just make me wanna pick up some charcoal and DRAW!!! You, Mr. S, have a most wonderful eye. Your blog is a great thing... you see and appreciate how beautiful, interest, and nice people look, as opposed to only fashion and trends. In that, your blog has a great sense of honesty. Honest appreciation of beauty and intrigue in the people around us.

Absolutely gorgeous. He's a young St. Sebastian (no, not the singer.)

I wish he'd ditch the sorts, though. I understand the motivation, but the long shirt does it well enough.

Little black book is fantastic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:49 AM) :

Thanks for the shot - this is why I view the Sartorialist! True photographic art - wow.
Could be the best picture yet? He has that relaxed yet effortless Melbourne style - full of grace and inner spirit.
His blk shorts bring it all together - and you know what, he wouldn't have even tried!

Contemporary dancer? ;-)x L

Pretty awesome to see him here!

I agree with your comments Scott. A perfect character to photograph. I also love his style and colour choice. He obviously chooses comfortable yet purposeful clothing to suit the demands of his dance-related lifestyle. He has a beautiful and unique look to him and looks perfectly serene and at ease with his place in life.
