Comments on "On the Street......Surface Texture in Black, Sydney"
Gail Sarronda looks so beautiful and enchanting here!
SHE LOOKS LIKE A PRINCESS!
http://www.moneasywardrobe.com
i am at your command, my love.
gail sorronda?
I like the foreground of the picture, but something about it makes me think it could have been even more amazing!
Lovely shot, and nice to see something which isn't stereotypically Sydney.
love it! love the feathers and the necklace detailing!
woo-we! this is some black magic!
Gee wiz... What beautiful volume!
I hope you are enjoying you time here in Australia.
Xx Miss L
Melbourne
thats imazing
Whoa. Intense.
What a lovely photo...always inspiring and still humble
what an amazing shot :)
the cute hair just makes this even better.
http://ohdearitsliana.blogspot.com
that amazing
Hello
that's great picture. she looks like a raven. beauty&simple.
enjoy! :*
beautiful. i love the movement, the gracefulness that her clothing embodies...
wow. just wow. such a beautiful and dramatic photo!
One could gather a dark/gothic perspective. However the combination of the feathers, the woolen warmth and the ruffly overthrow transforms the look into a delicate, soft feminity despite the harsh colour. Thats the magic of fashion and photography. Well done, this is magnificent. I swear by your work, Come to Glasgow!!! Danielle, Scotland
Oh my! This photo/girl/outfit is truly amazing! The textures, the hair, everything! GORGEOUS!
xx
You found this woman just walking down the street? And she posed for you like that? It looks like you happened upon a fashion photo shoot and they let you snap one.
Love the feathers!
I love this. She looks very CDG.
This is so beautiful in such a scary way, I am so intrigued - what is her story I wonder...
Fantastic shot!
Beautiful!
Texture is right--love the fringes at top and bottom. The section with the transparent piece of cloth across her face and hair is like an artwork in itself. But was she really just hanging out on the street? So mysterious and exotic. (And when did Sydney get so Melbourne?!)
I love black and your photos!
amazing photo, though i must say i live in Sydney and i have never seen anyone dress so dramatically, everyone must know you're here and dress accordingly. I have no idea how you find these people but its a refreshing change from flip flops and singlets.
Blowing me away.
Amazing! The volume, simple haircut and sparkly necklace, all in all one of my favourite shots on here!
Oh my god. I love this girl.
Including her hair. Nice.
A stunning fashion statement photo.
Looks like she's holding a cat.
love the fabric!
insanely breathtaking. i love the black on black and the different materials. avante garde.
j'adore
Oh wow this is magical. I watched you shooting Gail from the media centre window and I've been waiting for the result to pop up! xx
soooooooooo like it!
Amazing! This looks more like a fashion shot than a street shot. I love every detail-- gorgeous!
fresh out of a magazine page
j'aime le photo!
It was so wonderful to hear what you had to say at AGIdeas. It certainly changed my perspective on the work you do for your blog in a most positive sense.
Thank you.
what a gorgeous designer!
hahaa! there've been more brisbane people on these pages than ones from the towns you're in! we win!
amazing much?
How absolutely stunning. The necklace is a great contrast to the black.
yes, gail sorranda looks fab here
such an amazing look and an amazing photo, as always! =)
Wow! beautiful noir noir moment :)
This is very good, and she's veeery pretty!
Perfect, in every way. The clothes look fabulous, and are set off brilliantly by her hair, expression, pose, everything.
Maybe your best shot yet? I think it's a contender, among many greats.
Oh Gail Reid - you will forever be in my heart. You were always so helpful in your TCB store here in Brisbane. Thank's for making me feel fabulous ;)
Exquisite!
Wow I can't believe this is in Sydney...this is such a Melbourne look! This is a woman that knows her style and sticks with it! I love the way the various textures add so much depth to what would otherwise be a very drab black outfit. She looks amazing and so elegant...
No one has ever seen this in Sydney.. because she's from Brisbane ;)
A magazine type photo that's kinda, maybe, sorta interesting but leaves you asking wtf is that?...Just looks like a whole lot of wannabe couture black to me.
beauuuutiful!!!
Mysterious. Very interesting!
This is very nice... She needs a black cat to make the photo epic.
She is quite enchanting and really it's hard to pull off fringe and ruffles well. She surely succeeds.
Loving the drama and the mixture in fabrication! Excellent shot!!! :)
Now this is how one wears black elegantly.
Very editorial - this would fit in with any spread in the glossies!
This is beautiful! What a classy shot.
WOW!
This is fantastic, she looks so elegant!
http://modernlovewalksonby.blogspot.com/
interesting outfit... very cool!
colorthecloset.blogspot.com
She is a vision. I aspire to wearing clothing of this caliber.
Wow! What is that around her neck!?! Stunning look. Very dramatic photo.
I am duly convinced that there are no buttons in Australia. It's very disappointing. Not sure I could ever visit a country with no buttons ...
You have a beutiful blog of common or not common people... wonderful the colours of your photos.
Very elegant the girl in black wear. I am sorry for my bad english!
a-ma-zing picture!!!
Nice shot.
So editorial. So unlike what we're used to seeing here.
It's great but odd because of her face -- it's not the face of a girl who would wear this. Like a kid in mom's evening gown.
Where on earth is this girl going?
bjork of the sun.
can she sing?
Gail looks fabulous, what a lovely photo!
X
She seems so fragile and strong in the same time... so nice !
Mister B.
http://etc-thebside.blogspot.com/
It blows my mind that this is "on the street" material.
I think we can all just go ahead and call this woman a goddess. Beautiful shot as always.
OMG!!!!!!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE
Not my thing, but so dramatic! So bold! So eyecatching and mysterious and elegant! (and all those other adjectives)....(:
omg this is sooo beautiful. This photo is like a dream, so spontanious! Its an amazing outfit, i love her pose. xoxo http://fashionforafashionista.blogspot.com/
:-)
like an editorial shoot. enchanting!
egotrippingatthegates.blogspot.com
WOW. This is inspiring. Striking photo and striking woman. I love the silver beaded neckline against all the black, and also the feather fringe and chiffon ruffles because they help the all-black look feel less heavy. Just amazing.
this is such a stunning capture. bravo. it chills and warms my heart all in one.
Could the eyebrows be any better?
No, they could not.
Lanvin? I love it. So romantic...
I've quietly enjoyed your blog for a long time, but this image is the first one that requires me to break out of my anonymity and say WOW.
I grew up in France and am rather biased when it comes to fashion photography... or maybe picky is the right word... I gravitate towards the intense and slightly abstracted.
Not that what I think actually matters (!) but for what it's worth, from one artist to another, this is simply gorgeous and I would love a print version to post on the wall in my studio.
amities
this could be a lot worse.
love.
that´s a pity we cannot see her whole...but this black and silver feather symphony is so charming
surreal beauty phenomenon. very, very favorite
I love the movement! She looks magical.
Wow! Where is she off to? I want to go! Beautiful volume and texture, love the added bling. Dd
Lovely shot, but I think you should always say when the subject of your photos is a fashion insider. Gail Sorronda is an Australian designer. I assume she designed this outfit herself.
Waow.
truly a-m-a-z-i-n-g.
beautiful....
x Ingrid
http://ingridholm.xanga.com/
So good! it has a sort of Richard Avedon portrait taken outdoors feel. I would love to know you just chanced upon this incredible vision walking down the block but i'm guessing maybe this is part of the project you mentioned? Either way, i still get the impression you did just meet her on the street and i love that!
3 words: go-geou-ous!!
s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g.
I agree -- I suggest retitling supposedly "on the street" shots that feature fashion insiders to "in the business" or something. There is a difference between snapping someone on her bicycle and catching a designer or fashion editor outside a fashion show in Milan.
great picture! x
stunning picture, looks like it came straight from a vogue magazine. i like it=)
bonbon’s vintage
I love....what she is not wearing:
not wearing a ton of bangles on her arms, not wearing big earrings, not wearing obvious make-up like a red lip or something.
so it is more purely just a person and the clothes and nothing distracting from their beauty.
the best are tassels below...
just... WOW!
To musikcricket 3.01pm: why do we need to know if someone in a photograph is a 'fashion insider'?? is so we can take a whole bunch of preconceived notions to form an opinion? Should we subject people to some kind of handicapping system in order to appraise their style and clothes? Sartworld encompasses the highest echelons of fashion and its' representatives at and around the shows in milan or paris to every kind of person on the streets of manhattan (one place where you really do get every kind of person, believe me). Carine Roitfeld in one picture, some guy out grocery shopping, a tourist, or a girl riding her bicycle in the next. IMO whether or not someone is a fashion 'insider' is irrelevant and a little bit missing the point....
wow! STUNNING!
amazing!
Love this photo, I saw you taking the photo up in the RAFW media room and Sonny's photo of you made it into The NY Times, The Moment blog: http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/29/photo-of-the-moment-gail-reid/
Gail Sorronda (Reid) is the sweetest thing.
indeed dynamic dramaticism...
touching...
You sure get a lot of comments.
Nice pic. Reminds me of a lot of other pics like it.
I'm actually amazed that SO many people who have commented on this picture don't even know who she is!
Even though she was snapped in Sydney - she is a Brisbane girl and a Brisbane-based designer and i would bet hundreds of dollars that she is wearing all her own stuff.
She is a very talented designer, has a great imagination and she knows how to get women excited about clothes. I own a dress and a frill from her store and i am proud to admit i paid a LOT of money for them but had no issue with it because her clothes are very high quality and her designs are unlike anyone elses!
And everyone wonders why she looks so fab in this shot - she used to be a HUGE international model!!! She is still present on the Dallys Models website! It's kinda sad that people in Australia who love fashion don't know much about our Australian designers - we should be more supportive of them!
She reminds me of 'Frozen' music video, but she is better than Madonna :)
Gail Reid = Sydney bringing it.
She used to be a Brisbane girl but she's living in Sydney now :)
this looks like a magazine ad, or from an editorial.
Agreed Anonymous - she is an Aussie, full stop.
captured!
Dear Anonymous (5:40),
mDesiree13 (4:14) has answered your question completely. I would only add that if you scroll through the comments about this very elegant photo, you will find several people who took this to be an example of real street fashion (i.e. butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers expressing themselves through clothes and style) and not of a gifted professional designer showing off her wares. I like seeing both kinds of photo on this site, but I see nothing wrong with knowing what we are looking at.
The composition of this photo looks like it needs to be in an editorial.
dra.ma.tic.
dramatic!
I love love love her. Can't wait to see your more Melbourne photos!!!
SO glad you made it over to Fitzroy. You'll the boho over this way.
The laneways in the CBD also attract some interesting folk....
I honestly think this is one of the best pictures you have ever taken. I want a print of it.
While trying to find out who Gail Sorronda is (an Australian fashion designer) I found a picture of Sart TAKING this picture! Art of art! You can see it on Sarronda's blog: http://gailsorronda.blogspot.com/

She's gorgeous & super stylish.
WOW !!!! GEE I WONDER WHERE SHE IS GOING ? SAFEWAY/COLES PERHAPS !! FANTASTIC SHOT AND SHE LOOKS AMAZING AND I WISH PEOPLE WOULD DRESS UP BUT I DO PREFER THE MORE NATURAL RAW SHOTS ALSO LOVE SHOTS OF PEOPLE ALL AGES ,STYLE NEVER GOES OUT OF FASHION IT IS SOMETHING THAT CAN NOT BE PURCHASED THAT WHY SOME OF MY FAV FASHIONISTA HAVE NO MONEY YET LOOK AMAZING THANKS XXXX
Yeah but can she cook?
ON THE STREET?
I feel so proud to call myself a Brisbane girl right now. And although I can't see the whole outfit I think Gail is wearing one of her own A/W 09 designs, no? Either way, beautiful.
Gail Reid is yet another example of how Brisbane is just as capable as the more renowned Sydney and Melbourne of creating and producing interesting and beautiful fashion.. a beautiful woman and beautiful photo Sart.. make the trip to Brisbane if you can.
If you go to Gail's blog on her website and scroll down to the last photo you'll see Scott photographing Gail on the beach. The beach which I had not seen before, I can just now intuit around the edges of this striking woman and striking photograph. Kudos!
I refuse to believe this is a streetwear shot. Its a gr8 picture! Also i love the fact that she has decided to not wear a red lipstick or dark kohl.
blown away... wow, just wow..
I'm jumping on the compliment bandwagon. Breathtaking! Well done!
gail dresses like that all the time so yes its from the street. its all her own designs. pretty sure the top is called matador poncho from aw09. so many ill-informed comments. yes she's from brisbane, no she doesn't live in sydney. she lives in paris with her fiance. gail sorronda blog tells all
http://gailsorronda.blogspot.com
It's so refreshing to see a designer who 'walks the talk' - no jeans and a tee here.
I am comments on the comment. You have alot.
http://www.allmylittlewordsonline.com
That's gorg!!
Wow, is this Gail Sorronda? Or just her doppleganger?
so great, love the attitude, the mood and the style
Love all these textural monochromatic outfits!
http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/29/photo-of-the-moment-gail-reid/
:-)
beautiful shot, but when are we going to see the best of Melbourne? Chapel St is definitely not the best representation of our amazing fashion...
A beautiful girl wearing beautiful clothes, what more do you need for a stunning fashion shot?
Olive
www.visforolive.blogspot.com
dark and poetic - fantastic shot!
it's so theatrical... like a dark romance!
how come no one in Sydney actually dresses like this on a day to day basis?? People only dressed well in and around fashion week. You dont see people dressed like this on any other week of the year which is rather disappointing. This girl appears more European in her style, this is an outfit which one would expect to see on the streets of Paris.I feel this girl and a couple of others have given Australia hope in finding people with style who dress like this on a more regular basis like they do in Paris, Milan, Florence, Rome etc.
The beautiful queen of the darknest
Very well taken picture. Although not every part of the person is sharp (like the necklace), I think this image is definitely one of your best.
Love the idea of this picture , but stance Feels too forced......the dimension/detail and color is very beautiful.
fierce!
as someone else mentioned, this is a photo from the New York Times blog of Scott taking the photo of Gail on the street...

See the contrast between the side walkers and our lovely lady! hah
Beautiful dress, beautiful work Sart!
And this, Scott, is why your book can't come soon enough.

i too thought it couldnt be a street shot at first glance. esp since she looks all made up for a photo shoot.but even so, it's a wonderfully timeless photograph.the wig does it for me.lanvin much?
Gail Sorronda is amazing!!
This picture is devine. It's my all time favorite on the sartorialist!
Fantastic!
www.thingsbya.blogspot.com
Brilliant. Amazing. Superb.
One of the best images I've seen in a long time.
I like her. She has amazing style. I like black.
This is a truly amazing shot!
oh my gosh. AHHHHHHH I LOVE IT
Sophisticated and powerful
Scott - what a great shot - you are the business man
Dark whimsy! She's the gorgeous and elegant queen of the ravens, with a choker to die for. What a powerful image... she is stunning. The understated makeup is a perfect polish.
Need to add another commentary (which I think relates to your work in general). What I love about the photography is that none of it is planned, none of it is styled per se (aside from what the subjects walk out in for the day, and what grabs your attention). If anything, these shots are the antidote to all the photoshopped and 'staged' fashion shots in contemporary culture, yet they are all just as remarkable and beautiful whilst doing so. This shot demonstrates just that.
Errr not a wig... that's her real hair. I'm lucky enough to know her and trust me she dresses like this every day
She is a real beauty, but I have to say this is one of my favorite shots! The pose, the clothes, the look in her eye, the angle. Everything is perfection here!
Jacques - whats the big contrast? i dont see it....
This is Magical!. The textures play on well with eachother, the overall look is perfection. Her stare is quite intense!
Very "Twilight" and mysterious.
i luv it
great textures
this is art
an amzing outfit
Another Brissy Girl rocking it in Sydney - So many Brissy girls making it on your trip, maybe a side trip up this way should the on the cards next!
Is it forreal someone wears this casually on the street?
and who's gail sorronda?
LOve the outfit, hate the hair. :)
Sydney is really impressing me! I love the all black ensemble, but I especially love the texture, the volume, and the bib necklace. The bob haircut and bangs make her look very Parisian and overall, he looks elegant, sophisticated and chic.
WOW amazing. Takes my breath away.
drama!
i love...
Couture beauty
love the dark drama...gorgeous!

so pretty.
Pure magic
You have captured an absolutely beautiful photo of Gail....Brisbane....Sydney who cares? The main point is she's an amazing designer drawing attention to Australian fashion design market.
you can buy the matador poncho that gail is wearing here:

I want to know her story
That is framed art! Love the details and the black
brisbane represent! woo!
gail looks absolutely stunning, i wouldnt be surprised if the clothes were her own designs.
OH, Sir, you continuously surpise me with your gorgeous shots. I'm so glad you've come to visit us in Aus. I was waiting for the day 'Sydney' would be one of your frequents. PLEASE, just check out Brisbane. It's the 3rd largest city and I can guarantee a more casual, flirty array of colors.
what an amazing portrait!
Gail's beautiful haircut was done by Lisa Guardala at Lila Boheme in Brisbane!
STUNNING
omgosh I love her lookbook.
This woman is so stunning and so talented... love the breeziness in this photo.
just a simple idea!x
