Comments on "On the Street......Steps, Sydney"
Another poetic shot. I love the play of transparency and the lightness of the shot (the black jacket and the cigarette sort of kill it). The shoes that seem to float with her feet, the pattern of the dress on her thigh, the thinness of the fabric and the transparency of the pattern near the hem... moments of poetry.
This is very dubious... I get the romance, but in my opinion in most cases:
White + Lace + Perspex = Trashy.
Sweet toes
Beautiful shot. That skirt is gorgeous.
love love love the tan legs, dark jacket and gauzy white skirt (dress?)....esp love the shadow of the dress on the leg.
what i don't love? those clear sandal heels. kinda...prom-y, no?
This photograph speaks to us!
Just love your photos from Australia. This one is gorgeous - the light on the lace against the metal steps - just beautiful.
Wow!!!! I love the skirt. And the shoes are really nice!!!
Best!
Jose
The delicacy of the lace and the lightness and transparency of the shoes are echoed by what appears to be a staircase made of air and ladder rungs.
The ethereal feeling is ruined by the cigarette.
Wow. Even though it's autumn down there, I love how just a photo of tanned bare legs with a floaty skirt and heels (are those really lucite?) pretty much sums up the summer-year-round ideal that the rest of the world has about Australia. I want to go there so badly. Did you know that Garance of garancedore.fr is down under in Sydney too? Two of my favourite fashion bloggers. Ironic, but it makes me want to go there even more.
Love the flirtiness of the skirt. But really do not dig the perspex heels or the cig. I do like the play of light though.
beautiful shot
Haha. all comments aside, i failed to notice the cigarette, or the combination of perspex and lace. all i saw was a beautiful photograph, all eyes on that shadowplay of lace on that tanned limb. and most importantly, the feeling that a Moment was captured, one captured to some extent by chance, but ultimately by an eye that knows how to See. Bravo, sartorialist! you make sydney look delicious.
i wanna see the rest of the person!
I like it for what it is... nice light, nice fabric, nice legs... just a moment.
I love this! Brilliant reinvention of stripper heels.
this is so sexy.
brilliant contrasts. great composition. a bit of geometry.
it is all so beautiful, but this is the first time that a cigarette has taken a away from a picture for me... usually i love them (even though i dont smoke) in the picutres
still great eye i do really like ths one!
Wish we can see her face!
As always, your photos are stunning in their ability to capture movement and light. This one is lovely in just that way. Gorgeous contrasts too: the metal and the plastic, the lace and cigarette, the sunshine and shadow. Beauty!
trashy shoes
I like the lightness of the skirt and shoes being counterbalanced by what seems to be a velvet jacket? It is a very young look to be sure, but she has the legs to pull it off. Jorge from WPB
dear sart,
did you include the (wedding, i presume) ring in the picture deliberately? :P
the lace skirt and cigarette make such an ironic combination.
Great shot. However, I'm not loving the outfit. The shoes, at least to me, seem quite outdated. I could also do without the skirt.
pretty !! love the lace, the shadows the tanned legs, the shoes.
a sweet moment captured in time.
très, très sexy...and romantic at the same time...
...and I love that she is wearing "Pleasers", Strippershoes...ohh them Strippers...they are everywhere, attempting to disguise as white-laced fairys....beware Sydney people!
So pretty.
Nice!
Great picture.
compare and contrast these lovely shoes and feet with the bondage old school marm feet in earlier posts. beauty wins over fashion slavery every time.
This is so light and summery and girly!Thumbs up!
Ha ha this pic made me think of my similar "stripper" shoes. Personally, I love the shoe, gives you the sexy lift of a heel w/out seeing the structure. I spotted these on the Ba-da-bing girls on the Sopranos and since, the image refuses to leave. Here w/ the sweet skirt and the boyfriend jkt it all looks innocently sexy. I like it.
gorgeous. looove that skirt!
That's a beautiful photograph, Sart. So skeptically romantic.
I had great hope for the return of the eighties, now I grow concerned - is this the return of wearing our underwear on the outside?
Amazing shot... you're an artist.
how poetic :)
I looove the skirt.
wonderful shot....
the cigarette on her takes away all the lyricism of the photo...
misteriosa Cinderella!!
love the lace!
usually i am all about the sort of trashy/chic dichotomy... but i draw the line at lucite heels.
gorgeous legs, gorgeous feet, gorgeous skirt, but horrible shoes.
love the photo. hate the shoes...
Beautiful skirt, beautiful legs, beautiful lighting.
...Shoes befitting of a stripper. Maybe Lucite heels don't have that connotation in Australia, though.
Makes me curious and wanting the big (whole) picture.
Cinderella's walk of shame. :)
Great shot!
Stripper heels or not, their heels match the metallic glint of the stairs perfectly. Gorgeous shot!
i must say, a totally dislike these plastic shoes. the only ones i respect are the "melissa" ones.
Nice shot. Not trashy at all. Because ´trashy´ nowadays is IT at the moment.
beautifully delicate skirt!
beautiful skirt!
Sublime ! Sunny Side
Aren't those shoes Chanel? I'm not sure but didn't they do PVC sandals and glass heels for spring of something?
God, what a completely lovely image!
Seriously? I don't get it.
GORGEOUS. gorgeous.
Funny how everyone sees trashy shoes, innerwear as outerwear, and the cigarette. True, but what I also see is another costume perfect for the next Sex & The City movie! SJP wouldn't be Carrie without her cigarettes and inappropriate clothing, right?
gorgeous~~
Sheesh! How long did i spend looking at this picture before i noticed the cigarette! I have no problem with it, what i do have a problem with are the perspex shoes. They never fail to look anything other than cheap in my opinion. I do love the gorgeous lace skirt toughened up by the black jacket. Black biker boots would have completed the look. Another great shot!
oh what tension!! I hold my breath hoping for her tender little feet not to slip on that narrow step. Beautiful play on walking on a wire!
I've been telling everyone I want clear shoes and they've been telling me I'm crazy...I see that you also get the Cinderella in the idea.
No no no no no. I'm sorry. Just because this shows up on this blog does not make it stylish. Those shoes will NEVER be chic, I don't care if trashy is making a comeback or not.
The point of this blog is timeless and sophisticated style. Plastic, clear heels are neither of these things.
i love this jacket!!
I love the transparency effect in the picture, but those shoes mmmmmmmmmmm no!
What an incredible shot! Love the shadow cast by the lace on the leg :)
xx
incredible shot...would've loved to have seen the whole look.
love the skirt. perfect.
I love the shot! - especially the shadow of the lace on the legs but I don't like the shoes.
i'd kill to see a designer do a line playing with this transparency. The picture is delightful but the girl's concept could be done better.
i live in sydney and have so been looking forward to seeing what will catch the sartorialist's eye here. i found it kind of sad but appropriate that this combo made it to the blog - sad because it encapsulates everything that makes me glum about the style of sydneysiders, appropriate because, actually, this is the predominant aesthetic of the city. all in all, we're a plastic mule kind of people. i wish it were different. have been pleased to see some other inspiring shots though, so am taking heart in the style credentials of my city.
your photos are so amazing! you're so the best ever!
you have to come soon to brasil!
and take the most beautiful pictures..
lov your job and thanks for divide it all with us!
Beautiful shot and very beautiful legs .
And her skirt is perfect
<3
very walk of shame. like the mannish jacket with the lace (i'm nowhere near embarrassed to show some leg), and the lighting. but please, please, please... those shoes.
need we say more?
she must have been freeezing. The weather isn't cold by northern hemisphere standard, but it's still much too cold for this.
I think what's great about this shot is that it is able to transcend what from farther away or closer up would betray the 'trashiness' of this look. the plastic shoes with what i would guess is a pretty low quality lace skirt and pin stripe jacket would indeed make for a less than spectacular sartorial moment. but when captured in the right light, it doesn't matter the quality of lace - it will still produce a gorgeous shade over bare skin - higlighted by the darkness of the jacket above and striped steps below. the shoes keep the great line of her legs without having it be a barefoot shot. from this point of view it is a beautiful ensemble and that woman is totally rocking it!
I think the whole composition captures the nature of a 'moment' beautifully - the cigarette will burn down into ash, the tanned legs will age, the delicate lace will disintegrate....there is so much tension in the photograph in this suspended moment - I think the rough cigarette is the perfect foil for the delicate lace. I worry that she will swing too close to the skirt and burn a hole in it...
The shoes are not classic or 'stylish' but I think in this moment she is pulling it off and the photograph itself is wonderful.
so feminine and lovely! reminds of why i'm glad to be a girl :)
I just adore that flirty sensual lace skirt! i have a weakness for ruffles, lace, and chiffon...
looks like the early morning, briskly walking down subway steps holding a cigarette with what looks like a men's jacket on? walk of shame??
Love the photo; great contrast and light.
That skirt has a beautiful hem. However, at that length, it might lead to indecent exposure; though her legs are beautiful.
I'm curious why you didn't include her whole body. Her hands show she is not a teenager...most likely in her thirties. The suit looks like a man's pinstriped blazer. The texture of the jacket and the delicate lace aren't usually paired this way. Then the shoes are slip-ons.
Did she just step out of her lover's house for a smoke?
Hmm...what a mystery!
Given how her hands look I can only imagine what smoking has done to her face.
I thought the purpose of this blog was to show individual style, not classic boring safe style. Sart-I think this look is pure artistry. Her legs are beautiful and the heel creates a lovely long line, the shadow of the lace is lushious and her feet are well groomed so I say bring on the transparent heel which creates the illusion of her floating down the stairs. Bare feet are not dirty words in Australia.
I can appreciate the shot, Scott, it is so gorgeous. However, I'm not loving the skirt or shoes...
Love the menswear jacket with the whimsical skirt and barely there heels...I love the the contrast but how well it goes together.

Because of your sojourn Down Under, I have downloaded the movie "Australia." I was going to avoid it, but now I'll celebrate the moment.
So you can tell your sponsors their promotion is working -- to some extent!
Anyway, once again your photography is so good it vies with its subject. Is that actually good? Hmmm...
Sexy legs, naughty cig.
You've really captured this photo!
Great contrast in the lace and pin stripe, the metal hardness and the soft lace which flips so flirtily as the girl with gorgeous feet (most people aren't so lucky) and lovely tanned legs walks up those metal steps...
Somewhat tacky? Maybe, but she pulls it off and the shot is fantastic!
The skirt is amazing.
Lol -- her ensemble is a blushing bride, a manly groom, a plastic-shod bridesmaid, and an embarrassing drunk uncle (you know, the cigarette) all in one! Wonder if she planned it that way. Great shot, Sart... (-: (Also, I can't help thinking DAMN, those Aussie girls have great legs!)
I love the skirt and shoes

This pic is really beautiful

Great shot, although i would say that many of the individuals that were those sort of shoes frequent the kings cross area (red light area).
I think you got to Australia at just the right time. It was 3 degrees celsius in Melbourne today.
One persons trash is anothers treasure. Thankfully, or nothing would ever be appropriated and we would all still be wearing spats. Now there's an idea!
Floating elegance that begs to see the entire vision.
As for the comments, I don't see why plastic shoes have to connote 'stripper.' They're dainty rather than fetish. I think there is a clean minimalist aesthetic about them. To just resign something so easily is such a conservative view about fashion. We should reclaim things from the red light district for sunlight and daily wear that have nothing inherently vulgar about it.
You see, the Melbournians are really just jealous of the Sydneysiders ...
Sydney, with its picturesque harbours and sunny, humid weather allows for a certain frivolity and sensuality that Melbourne lacks. So the Melbournians retaliate and find (a collective) strength in their black 'intellectual' fashion..
lovely skirt....Nice color and love the lace detail
This photo made me smile. Simply lovely. . . didn't notice the cig mentioned. The shoes come across (for me) as more "Cinderella" than "stripper." I noticed the (wedding?) band. It evoked a style I enjoyed many years ago.
Thank you for sharing the cool style of the Aussies with us.
Ava
Great skirt, but not a big fan of the plastic shoe.
They look cheap to me.
very Cinderella there with the perspex heels .
I don't know what to say about this picture. It looks so classy (the picture) yet it's so not (stripper heels?).
Lucite shoes, bletch!
Beautiful foto. And beautiful shoes... and beautiful legs.
The shoes inspire me.
I'm going to buy a pair just like them!
Perfect, fresh, sexy and hot at the same time. The jackt just got perfect with the hole thing!!! This is very brazilian!!!
I love the skirt, and how the shoes give it a Cinderella-esque feel.
I like this photo and each of the elements that make it up. These are the pictures you make that I like best - they transcend the usual reaction I have about the clothes and become more about composition, light and mood. This site cheers me up a few times a week. Thanks for that.
what a lovely skirt!

Great photo! What a cool angle...and I love the shoes!
beautiful detail shot,
please do more of them
what an amazing picture
those shoes are somewhat hideous..... yet somewhat amazing!!
Come and shoot Manila girls, give us a chance!
Gorgeous!! So feminine!
The pieces individually do nothing for me at all (I rather dislike them all)... I tend to dress classically but with an edge. But together.... love it. Deeply. The light, the legs, the lace. So sexy.
Love the photo, love what so many people have written - especially lj & Beatrice Kim. Yes, this is what street style photography should be about: a mystery, and a story. A moment frozen in time, inspired by Bresson or even Bill Cunningham: the father of contemporary street style photography, and my inspiration.
This is how I used to shoot, but for my (relatively new) blog I thought I had to do more conventional, posed shots. I've slipped one or two in - on 27th March, for ex - but now I vow to do more of this. Best shot I've seen in a long time, thank you.
Hope you're enjoying the trip.
It's hard coming into the comment section late in the game, however, i had to add my 2 cents. Daytime, lace, lucite heels, cig n a pin striped blazer - I heart her. Great shot!
Beautiful photo! I'm not sure about the lace with the clear heel but I think I actually love it. I love the shadow that the skirt creates and how you shot the picture in motion. Welcome back :)

Great lighting and cropping of the subject ...
Lace and lucite.
Love the shot and the outfit. Excellent.
sunny days can be deceiving in sydney...she must be freezing
I love this. I agree with Stella (above), the shoes are acually quite minimal while still being pretty.
To my eye they are less fetishist than most status shoes from the major Euro fashion houses - which cobble women like ancient chinese concubines.
Also, Sydney is my home and I see this as a quintessential look here. Lots of suntanned skin worn with sexy insouciance, and never mind if it is a cool Autumn morning. Avoid tights at all costs!
A great photo, but I hate theses clear sandals... they look so cheap!
I like the cig peeking out at the top of this photo.
And the flowwy skirt.
sort of a modern day cinderella shot, no?
WHO MADE THE SKIRT AND SHOES? I MUST OWN THEM!
I love everything including the lucite shoes! She makes it work!
oh nooooooooo i heard that lucite heels were in fashion now in but i thought it was just a nightmare! they need to stay in strip clubs and at frat formals NOT in the fashion world!
who knew that clear plastic heels could look good?
Nice skirt, nice legs & nice shoes... Very fresh & sensual...
Philippe
www.punkgeisha.com
my favorite summer heels have 2 transparent straps across the top and a stiletto cork bottom. they make my legs go on forever. i believe the cork to be less trashy :0
awesome lighting, shadows, and texture.
beautiful pictures.
Is that Garance Dore?
In what rule book does it say lace + perspex + cigarette = trashy ??? Aren't art and fashion about throwing out the rule book?! I think she's kind of rock-n-roll, in a really pretty way.
Beautiful pic.
art in my eyes.
I've been looking for this skirt for 1 week...keep looking for:)
Cheers from Paris
Monica
I want to cycle in this skirt
beautiful!!!
i love your clicks
kiss from sao paulo
love love love the tan legs, dark jacket and gauzy white skirt (dress?)....esp love the shadow of the dress on the leg.
what i don't love? those clear sandal heels. kinda...prom-y, no?
http://www.moremony.com
Sart, you are a leg man if there ever was one... not a criticism.
Love the shot, love the skirt, but clear shoes scream stripper to me... Plus they just seem like they would be uncomfortable. Wouldn't that plastic part over the foot get super hot and sticky?
But oh, that skirt...
Sart. This photo is one of the greatest one I ever seen. But the cigarette in her hand is a critical thing.
lovely pic SART.
so many prejudices here - trashy, stripper....:- (.
MAkes me wonder what she looks like. is she touseled blond or touseled brunette, does she smell of smoky leather or sweet, does she play Madonna or Dylan...
Shy
georgeous pic! the skirt is to die for!
they're not stripper heels, they're Chanel!
beautifyl shot...summer comes in my mind...!
The delicacy of the lace and the lightness and transparency of the shoes are echoed by what appears to be a staircase made of air and ladder rungs.
This picture is very transparent and cute.
Seriously, does anyone know who made that skirt/dress? It is amazing.
oh, my god~!!
I love that shoues!!!
that is so sexy
god.....I wish that was me....
