Statement jackets how I love thee.

Blogger gilty pleasure said ... (10:35 AM) :

love her jacket.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:36 AM) :

It's all about big shoulders! In fashion, and well...life, metaphorically speaking!

Blogger Molly said ... (10:36 AM) :

i need this coat! love!

Blogger Oh Dear Charlotte said ... (10:37 AM) :

Isn't she just?! I love how she plays favourites even though she would have an amazing wardrobe to dress from, because not everyone can afford a different coat for every day..

Blogger Alison Rowe said ... (10:41 AM) :

I just love those Balmain military jackets...so beautiful.

Blogger Alison Rowe said ... (10:42 AM) :

And might this be the amazing Emmanuelle Alt, in this amazing jacket?

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (10:43 AM) :

I know this jacket has been criticized. I happen to like it. I would like to see the inside of the shoulders to see how it has been constructed. This is definitely a one-season wonder; all those fashion mag articles on buying pieces with staying power tell you not to buy anything like this. But for now, I think it is a great look. Love the faded black t underneath. Jorge from WPB

Blogger kittenmasks said ... (10:46 AM) :

Balmain is seriously haunting me!!

Blogger Angeles Almuna said ... (10:46 AM) :

Nice jacket!!!!!

Anonymous issyme said ... (10:53 AM) :

I just can't get to liking this type of jacket. It just seems too contrived to me. Though she is definitely
one of the better ones since everything else is so simple.

The only time I thought it looked great was on a young women who was wearing a long lumberjack shirt underneath.

Blogger Frank Smith said ... (10:55 AM) :

That jacket is amazing, I want it! It's Sgt. Pepper, Mad Max, and Steampunk at the same time...

Can anyone figure out what those strips are? It looks like it could be made with epaulets...?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:57 AM) :

I would jack her for the jacket!;)

Blogger Lucy said ... (11:03 AM) :

I like this jacket but... I'm sick and tired of seeing her wearing it! It seems like if she didn't have any other! =)
Actually, Balmain has being repeating the same old stuff for too long now, it's high time for them to move on!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:09 AM) :

Love beautiful miss Alt in the beautiful Balmain jacket.
I love the way she wears it, very simply, in a kind of low profile way.

It's even more stunning and beautiful

Blogger Karen said ... (11:13 AM) :

Nice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:14 AM) :

don't get me wrong, I LOVE Balmain

but....I'm so sick of this jacket honestly.

Anonymous Vanessa said ... (11:37 AM) :

simply beautiful,this statement Jacket....
Everything so well done...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 AM) :

I feel the black jeans are killing the jacket, it needs a bit of contrast. Like Jorge from WPB, i would love to see how it's constructed too. It may be a one season wonder but it's fun.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

There it is again...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:13 PM) :

This just looks ridiculous.
Has anyone seen that commercial with the woman in the yellow 80's power suit avec football-shoulder pads? And the security guard saying "Where'd you park your Delorean?". This pretty much does the same.
Some styles should stay in the past.

Blogger Pretty Lovely said ... (12:30 PM) :

Would love for D.C. to be one day a stop for the Satorialist. Not sure what sort of fashion you will find along the K Street or Penn. Ave.... Would be interesting to find out.

xx,

Sam @PrettyLovely

Blogger James Taylor said ... (12:30 PM) :

Umm, Chrissie Hynde called: she wants her look back.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:34 PM) :

With so much great stuff going on on the front and sleeves, I think pointy shoulders are a bit too much.

However, she looks great.

Blogger Shaynuh said ... (12:39 PM) :

OMG! I really want that Balmain jacket! Its so "IN," right now! lol!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:39 PM) :

She is lovely! I just love her style cos she wears grey or black jeans a lot, and simle t-shirts even if she could afford almost anything. So it's not about the money, its about the attitude. And she is my age and she really is an icon in dressing for me.. That jacket looks amazing on her, but I wldnt wear it.

Blogger junglesiren said ... (12:50 PM) :

I see someone showed up at the Michael Jackson sale. Good for him. Every penny counts when you're raising kids in this tough economy.

Had to choose between MJ and a Sgt. Pepper joke.... so there you go.

I dig the fashion nun/rocker chic style that Emanuelle has perfected. She's totally cool, dude and I could like totally get sycophantic over her.... and all the voguettes for that matter.

However, truth be told....

I'm not a huge fan of marching band chic. I guess my main problem with this jacket (among a few) is that even though, yeah, it's Balmain (oh my!), it's inherently Forever 21 to me. I suppose up close and personal the fine workmanship takes it far from the F21 realm. I also suppose given the right venue the jacket is rockin'.... but in the daytime I find it costumey.

That said, I've seen the jacket numerous times and Emanuelle rocks it the best.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:06 PM) :

saw this same jacket in a different color, "love it in black".....

Blogger James Jean said ... (1:17 PM) :

Love that jacket and the shoulder detail. Oddly this is the only trend I'm willing to jump on....must find one.....

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (1:18 PM) :

i hate to say it, but i'm already tired of the balmain jacket! too many people wearing an over familiar piece.

Blogger Fly Girl said ... (1:56 PM) :

Love this! Rocker/millitary chic never went anywhere. And I don't think it's a one season piece. It depends on your location. In Chicago, you get lots of wear from jackets like these. I have an authentic military jacket that I wear from September through May.

Blogger Ruhvana and Flanelli said ... (2:05 PM) :

That jacket is such a statement! love it.

Blogger louliedeparis said ... (2:22 PM) :

A dream...

Anonymous Amber said ... (2:39 PM) :

I love how effortless this look is on her. The jacket does not overwhelm her the way that many Balmain jackets seem to with their owners. It fits her perfectly.

Blogger CF35 said ... (3:45 PM) :

Like toy soldiers...XX

Blogger Patricia S. said ... (3:52 PM) :

Sooooo beautifull! :)

Blogger indigo warrior said ... (4:47 PM) :

*sigh* Sartorialist your shouldn't have! How did you know I needed buttons today? (c:

I think it's beautiful. For those of you who have seen this look too much, shift your gaze elsewhere. I wonder how much it weighs?

Thank you for the button porn!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:10 PM) :

This again? Arrrrrgggggggg!

Blogger Ichiki said ... (5:38 PM) :

really black

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:20 PM) :

Does it come with a replacement button?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:38 PM) :

too much.. and the shoulders aren't helping either..nice shades, hair, and wind blown effect

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (7:17 PM) :

Not for me, but Emanuelle looks amazing!!!
xx

Anonymous an said ... (7:21 PM) :

i've actually never seen this style of the balmain jackets. it's nice, maybe more so because i love black. but i agree that this is a one-season wonder. by next month, it will be seen as terribly outré.

Anonymous julia said ... (7:30 PM) :

the balmain shoulders feel ubiquitous, but don't you think a portion of the sartorial punch goes away when the waist isn't cinched in?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:34 PM) :

The marching band coat is going to soon be a fashion clich´e of what not to wear. It is way too costume.

Blogger Bookworm said ... (8:41 PM) :

Not my thing (overly buttoned) but I see how it could work. I'm just not a big shoulder-pad fan. And too many buttons!

Blogger Ayana Campbell said ... (8:42 PM) :

balmain!!
i need a military/marching band blazer in my life

Blogger Joy Mars said ... (8:44 PM) :

You're not going to like this, but I think this Balmain jacket thing is too much of an "in" item NOT to be out.

Blogger stylePOVist said ... (9:04 PM) :

Leader of the band - Alt certainly is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:42 PM) :

wow! great shot and great jacket!

Blogger TMFA said ... (10:11 PM) :

Really fierce jacket. Gotta love balmain.

Blogger Rita said ... (10:17 PM) :

I was really into these jackets before, but they are so easily recognizable, and I seem to be encountering so many of them around... that they have sort of lost their charm... not their beauty and all... but just that essence of uniqueness or novelty I used to see in them before. Great look, though, and I do love her sunglasses, those I'll never get bored of.

Blogger eric g said ... (10:29 PM) :

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (10:50 PM) :

The title of this post really suits the picture.

Anonymous geezi said ... (12:45 AM) :

Overkill I would say.. nothing to soften the blow of the jacket!

reminds me of those jackets matadors wear :)

Blogger karadita said ... (2:36 AM) :

i'm absolutely loving this jacket!! very cool!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:04 AM) :

really trying to push this jacket-style?...she, not really everybody, does something right with it...my opinion...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 AM) :

Military jackets like this were the London look abt 30 months ago. She carries the haute version (though dated) off with aplomb.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:21 AM) :

KILLER BALMAIN!!

Anonymous Coco said ... (8:18 AM) :

I have seen this woman at Paris fashion week...
It is Emmanuel Alt, fashion director. I love how she mixes pieces with that rock attitude!

Anonymous zara said ... (8:29 AM) :

Jacket is too trendy to be stylish.

Blogger Beamsteria said ... (8:57 AM) :

I understand people getting tired of images of "The Jacket".
What I love is that Sart captures images of an individual's look, but I am so often disappointed when I see comments like "where can I buy those shoes/that handbag/that turban?"
Use these images as inspiration, not a prescription! A Balmain jacket will not make you cool, yet any outfit will look cool if you make it yours. Play around with what you have.

Anonymous Kristen said ... (9:11 AM) :

amazing jacket!

Blogger Matthew said ... (9:22 AM) :

Reading Les Misérables has taught me the name for that type of ornamentation on a military jacket: "brandebourg". The jacket is a "dolman".

Blogger Amy (the b-line) said ... (10:41 AM) :

Very nice. I appreciate the uncomplicated look. Simple and winsome.

Blogger K. said ... (12:15 PM) :

it's all about the jacket... although I don't like this 80's remember...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:04 PM) :

I recently saw a photo of Beyonce Knowles wearing a military jacket similar to this one. I don't know...it just seems so juvenile to me...but then again, it does remind me of The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance.

Blogger RUinSTYLE said ... (2:31 PM) :

I bought a jacket very similar to this in Camden Market London when I was 14 years old. Yes, a while ago!
I loved it! She looks fab sporting this cadet-style jacket - and what do you know? she's hit the nail on the head with current fashion trends! Both Beyonce and Rihanna have been spotted wearing one.

Anonymous laura said ... (3:06 PM) :

I don't care whether it is currently trendy, or even--gasp--trendy two years ago. I WANT THIS JACKET.

She looks great in it, too.

Anonymous Magsli said ... (3:31 PM) :

Does anyone work black as well as Ms. Alt?? She always looks fantastic. I love Balmain as much as the next person but this jacket is everywhere at the moment and i can't believe i'm saying this but i'm a little bit over it.

Blogger Chris (Topher) said ... (6:18 PM) :

Is this from th Balmain collection?

Blogger jessica said ... (6:36 PM) :

fab jacket

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:05 PM) :

For some reason, I don't think that it looks that great on her. Not horrible, just not somehow right.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 AM) :

i was impressed by the price of balmain jacket in printemps store in Paris, so expensive! but not good quality. It is pity so i have created my own and i'm glad it's great!

exquisite jacket

statment.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:08 AM) :

rock star chic! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:23 AM) :

The shoulders of the jacket are very intriguing, but the jacket's just too theatrical for my taste. It does make an interesting picture--at first I thought she was wearing ammo around her neck, then realized they were buttons.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:41 AM) :

o hai, my jacket makes me looks like a skeleton with gigantic/boney shoulders.

aside from the jacket, I really like the novelty of the blue jeans. it's simple, but the statement itself speaks volumes.

Blogger Alexus1325 said ... (7:30 PM) :

I'd buy Balmain's pale blue denim jacket (the one the does up on the side) if I could afford the ungodly price tag. Even if the shoulders are a bit too "edgy" for me.

Blogger Annie said ... (9:55 AM) :

aaaaahhhhhh... it's love!

Anonymous Cutdrop said ... (5:31 PM) :

Talent.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:08 PM) :

I have to say, this jacket style is one of my least favorite trends of the season. I see it and all I can think is Mickey Mouse Club and Thriller. It's too costumey for me for sure...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:21 AM) :

Tough chicks say it all! Underneath as sweet as they come!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:37 PM) :

Oh!! It's easy to recognize! Balmain you did a great job!

Blogger INES said ... (5:15 PM) :

That jacket!
it doesn't need any words

Blogger Justine Pombo said ... (3:18 PM) :

Is this the Balmain jacket? It's amazing and impossible like $10,000. The statement shoulders are so amazing.. I have a delicious section just for things 'I want' this jacket is on there at least 10 times! And Alice & Olivia is coming out with a cheaper ($1,000) version.. still out of my limit!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:49 AM) :

Followers...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:34 AM) :

It's all fantastic, but the shoulders just crossed the line and poked some poor fellows eyes out.

Anonymous domokun said ... (1:49 PM) :

The jacket...amazing shoulders. Just love the style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:09 PM) :

I love the whole look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:07 PM) :

balmain jackets are amazing, it reminds me of a bull fighter

satorialist come to seattle, we are not all fashionless granolas

Anonymous Uniformic said ... (3:15 AM) :

As "Cheapo" correclty pointed out, the original style of this jacket is called a "dolman" and it was originally part of the combatwear of the Hungarian light cavalry known as "hussars". As the employ of hussars spread to all European armies in the 17th and 18th centuries, their fashion followed suit. The use of the Brandebourg pattern later spread to other mounted units, such as artillery. This type of uniform is still used in many countries as part of parade gear.
