I love her style, so chic, so well done! The earrings are beautiful, and so are the socks with sandals. For me, these elements of fantasy and originality are more than enough.
Even if I am fond of the turbant, I think it doesn't go at all with this look, perhaps it would at night with a gown... It is like she's trying too hard to add some eccentrycity; no need for that, she already is very special and distinguished!

shopping your own closet is a cliche?? I disagree strongly. as vivienne westwood recently urged us to do, I'm all for modifying, reusing and revitalizing our already existing clothes... that is creative, smart and sustainable. I don't see how that can ever be cliche.

It's not cliche at all. When companies like AIG keep taking all our money, we have to make do with what we have and be as resourceful as possible. Plus you never know what you might have in your own closet anyway. It's sort of like finding that extra $20 in your pocket that you never knew about. ;)

I would have to disagree with the previous comments- I just find that the turban does not fit her head appropriately and the socks with sandals is completely indecisive and furthermore defeats the purpose of the sandals. However, I find her beauty quite lovely.
I'm just not loving the magenta turban! The rest of her look rocks!
it's a good thing to rethink one's habits, and hopefully this will last beyond the economic crisis. my dream closet is one that's full of a small, tightly curated collection of pieces i love rather than a huge stockpile of one-offs.

Ah, the jacket in the second picture is beautiful. Usually a clutch like that would be flashy but that's unique and classy. Shopping my own closet is something I'm not very good at but am trying to learn how to do.

Seriously, though, your model is lovely and stylish, but the only thing she has remixed is her hat. It would be nice to see more of the people you photograph multiple times re-wearing the same dress or shirt or coat in a very different way. Hats are too easy.
Rei springs to mind as an obvious subject for this sort of exercise. I bet she's a marvelous remixer.

I could never pull the turban off, so I'm amazed at how she pulls it off, with a blazer nonetheless! She looks amazing!

I love the turban, but I have to say that I don't think the outfits do anything for her - they seem to highlight the long torso/short legs body type in an unflattering way. And the turban sits too high ... But great colours.

She definitely has a unique style. I was so skeptical of the Prada turbans, and while they wouldn't work for me, I especially love this second ensemble. Love the colours and proportions.
I don't think shopping your own closet is ever cliche. If you love pieces you have invested in, why shouldn't you keep on wearing them? Isn't that the whole idea of 'investing' in the first place?
She's awesome, dude. Classy woman. I would look like i had a pumpkin on my head if i tried to get away with this. Earings are fab, it's true. She has an eye for perfect cuts. This relaxed tailoring is a good long term investment, too, and on her it dosen't look in the least conservative. yeh.

The headpiece is cool in theory, but I just don't think she pulls it off well here. Somewhat as if the piece is wearing her, and not vice versa, which I believe true style is all about.
Oh, and I just have to add...I was rummaging through my closet this past weekend, and unearthed soooo much cool "staple" pieces that I completely forgot I had...so safe to say, don't really mind the whole "cliche" of it all! Not one bit!!!

It's very true. We are having to get more and more creative. Things are getting increasingly expensive and our salaries are not! Everything in Japan is really really expensive and everyone shops and shops and shops. I think the spend money on clothes here like no other country but I'm not sure. Not too sure if I'm keen on her headscarf. Nevertheless it's a great photo!
Isn't a headwrap (or turban) supposed to cover one's hair? This looks rather odd with her hair hanging down and the thing sitting on the top.

I'm guessing the way to rock a turban (if indeed a turban can be rocked) is with your hair spilling out below in silken sheets. My hair is more of a modified fro and it doesn't "spill". It springs forth aggressively. It would just be a big bush sticking out making me look like a hipster Bozo The Clown so I won't be doing the turban thing.
This lady does it as best it can be done. However I think the turban is just too incongruous with the rest of the ensemble in the top picture. I like everything she's got on except that... What the turban does do nicely in that outfit is add a lovely shock of color.
The second picture is weirdly chic. She's fine as hell.

Wearing clothing once is not an issue of wealth but an issue of ignorance. Anyone who has only recently found themselves in a situation where they have been forced to "shop their own closet" would be wise to reflect on how wasteful and destructive it is to waste valuable materials like that. The line between patronizing the fashion industry and all arts (good!) and abusing the earth and becoming a conspicuous consumer is not hard to walk if you pay attention.

Shopping one's closet is a reality today, not a cliche. The reality sinks in as one's card gets declined at the cash register. I love the vintage feel of these clothes.

Yuck. Guess what? Stay shopping in your own closet and there isn't going to be much to look at on this blog anymore...or much advertising either. It is not a truth everyone is living with right now. It is a truth the fearful are living with. Individuality is applauded on all levels...self deprecation and encouraging a race to the bottom is not.
You of all people should be raising the bar...not lowering it.
Have the courage to post this and continue on being a conduit of talent and passion for an industry that will only get better. Never wear the ashes..rise from them.

I love the turban, but I really don't like the rest. I think we'll look back on this kind of self-conscious "eclecticism" and shudder - rolled, camel pants, thick socks with sandals? Summery, hippy earrings with a wool coat and - apropos of nothing - an aqua clutch? Do. Not. Want.
funny. all these fashion strategies for a financial crisis that i am reading everywhere. i feel like i have shopped this way for some time. I guess because I thought it was good to be thoughtful and resourceful.
i did a project on style and sustainability a few years ago and sometimes get requests for interviews. almost invariably an answer includes some form of "shopping your closet", such as...
There seem so many issues around ethical fashion, what can I do to make a difference?
I like design and new looks as much as the next person, but, again, I try to be thoughtful with my purchases and resourceful with what I already have. I often try to:
* pull out things I haven't worn in awhile
* reinvent a piece or wear it in a different way
* think about what I could use and buy items I hope to wear a lot and/or keep a long time
* focus more on quality over quantity
* buy clothing made from sustainable materials
* buy vintage and second hand.
here i thought i was just trying to be sustainable, come to find out my eco-strategy works during an economic free fall as well.
so even if it may be "cliché", it does not mean it is any less relevant.

The turban can easily make you look funny instead of sophisticated, eccentric or exotic. I would laugh if I was to meet this woman in the daylight wearing this particular turban. The woman of course is real beauty in a “Charlotte Rampling” way.
Totally agree with you Sart… the world is in need for a new Poetry… although I find your blog and pictures in some way refreshing… I must say that it's becoming a common place (are you expressing your idea of how it should be… or the wide range of possibilities?).
So if the need, leeds you to buy in your own closet, most probably and hopefully you'll find that new things start to happen and emerge. A sort of a clash…

I have a number of much loved dresses from the 1920s and 30s, a collection of Foale and Tuffin from the late 60s and early 70s, the odd Ossie Clark, lots of random items with no label made long befor i was born and some Acne jeans. I have always shopped my own closet and countless other peoples' as well as selling and giving away things from my own. If that's a cliche, it works for me.

I think it's really important to remember to be your own best resource. Back when I was a young, always broke, single mom I fell in love with some earrings a friend had made and was selling. I really couldn't afford the earrings, but I could afford the beads and string to make my own. My friend got me started doing beadwork.

I appreciate your sentiment, but I find this hat incongruous and really unflattering.
I think she'll look back and say "what was I thinking" but then on the other hand she's had her 15minutes.
I find the turban very incongruent....maybe if it was a different fabric. I am very ambivalent about it and find no inspiration sartorially, however, she looks very satified and she obviously loves it. Good for her !!! So it is inspiring from a confidence level.
Regarding 'shopping your own closet' : haven't we been doing it for eternity ? Who can afford to wear something only once ? I find the saying silly not cliche.
The dahlia-like turban is decidedly whimsical, together with the sandals over socks, sandwich the rather masculine monochromatic garb in the middle, making the whole more interesting than the sum of its parts.
I think she looks fantastic!!! I love the relaxed chicness of it all, and the headwear completes the look in my opinion!!

I'm so surprised to see people disliking her turban, which I believe is Prada. She is the only woman on the street--or anywhere off a runway, for that matter--that I have seen pulling it off, and it puts a smile on my face to see her carry it so effortlessly and with such confidence. She looks extremely comfortable and is swimming in her personal style without splashing it about over-dramatically, in my opinion.
This outfit looks so very comfortable. She's brave for wearing a turban. I love the pieces, but I thought that together, the pants made her legs look short and the jacket makes her torso look really long. She's beautiful, though.
i really cannot appreciate her look. i think her pants are too short (i'm also not fond of khaki), with the socks.. and she has a very strange proportion about her. the turban is kinda cool but still, the rest throws me off.

Instead of "crazy cool" the turban just seems "contrived crazy" but I admire her confidence to give it a try.
The phrase "Shopping your closet" has certainly been overused lately but the idea isn't a cliche at all.
I think if you can't rediscover something in your closet or enjoy wearing something in a new way then you must be a fashion victim.

I think she looks good in the photo with the black backdrop. The color of the turban is beautiful (although I'd never be able to pull off one). It also looks like it fits her better in this photo than the other one.
As for "shopping your own closet," I don't think most people would debate the value of that--EXCEPT retailers, designers and people actively invested in such things.
I wonder if people who have never thought of the concept of using your own clothing creatively are easily bored and wasteful. Why would you buy something only to wear it once (unless it's an outstanding event)?
When I buy things (doesn't matter the price), I buy them because I love them and want to wear them repeatedly.
It seems to me that people who want to wear something only once might do so for reasons of ego...
She's a beautiful woman, but it looks like she's a little girl playing dress up in her grandmother's closet. She's wearing it with confidence though, and I give her respect for that.

wow its not often that i find i have to leave a comment but in this case i feel compelled to as she just looks fantastic. this is the way i want to dress! she looks sexy without being too overt and strong without being overpowering.

What's all the fuss over the turban? Just the fact that so many are opposed means it is all the more original/individual and maybe even brave.
It's not much different than a knit skull cap. Except the knit skull cap is overdone, and now mainstream.

What is a cliche is slaving to purchase a new wardrobe every season. it's called investment purchase for a reason. personal style is about reinventing and adding to your collection and knowing what suits you. fashion should be fun not simply frivulous.

I appreciate the mash-up of dressing genres. But her clothes look so comfortable, that I would like to also see comfortable shoes. Or maybe the extreme comfort of the clothes make the shoes look more uncomfortable than they are.

Love the attitude shown in wearing a turban, but this particular one, the proportions..... with her hair down or her face-shape or something - I just find it extremely unflattering.
Many of us like to take a little chance with our ensembles - but in the end, shouldn't we find a balance? Like, choose that most whimsical/daring thing which also makes us look the prettiest? But I see I am in the minority here as to how good she looks.

I wish I could pull off a turban...so very jealous. There were some comments about the socks and sandals and I think that it works for me in the sense that the detailing of the shoes references the gathered centre of her turban, and the knitted socks add texture and refer back to her plain woolen sweater.
I don't think she is a woman who needs to be "flattered" by her clothes...her clothes simply complement her style, which she is chock full of.
