The right interesting combination.

Blogger Dick said ... (9:11 AM) :

Very much like the bow tie - usually the preserve of the English.

Blogger Sophie said ... (9:13 AM) :

This made me smile.

Blogger Tristan said ... (9:13 AM) :

Argh, he ruined it with the white socks!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

Haha this guy is so fresh. The shoes and the bowtie make this outfit. Great photo, Scott!

Blogger InStudio Blog said ... (9:18 AM) :

Je t'aime!

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (9:18 AM) :

People think bow ties are very formal attire, this gentleman wears his with confidence and a not-so-formal suit. I love the sneakers, although I would have matched the socks to the trousers. The rule that I like on this is: match socks to pants, you dont want to look like you are wearing booties (unless, of course, you are). I am still trying to figure out how you get the subjects lit so well when the background is so dar. Great pic! Jorge from WPB

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:23 AM) :

The sneakers are just perfect...color, style.

Blogger Nikki said ... (9:24 AM) :

How adorable is he! I really love this one. The sneaks make it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:27 AM) :

I am fairly new to this site but have gone through all the archives and viewed every single photo. I have enjoyed them all. But it is this photo which compelled me to write. There are no words to describe how much I love it. So, I'll just say thank you. Thank you Sir.

Blogger May Kasahara said ... (9:28 AM) :

I love this photo - down to the green-glass bottle of sprite.

Blogger Laura Gómez Recas said ... (9:29 AM) :

Exquisite, the touch of the bow tie is definitive.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:30 AM) :

THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS AMAZING SCOTT!
THE COLORS!
THE COMPOSITION!
THE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!
BRAVO

Blogger The Louche said ... (9:43 AM) :

This is great. When are we going to see the Anderson & Sheppard update?

Blogger . . . said ... (9:44 AM) :

I love the juxtaposition of the bow tie and the sneakers. It's amazing how a bow tie can "class up" an outfit.

Blogger patti said ... (9:45 AM) :

hahah love it.

Blogger James Jean said ... (9:45 AM) :

He's one of those "I'll dress however I like but still stylishly and I dare you to say something about it". I only disagree with the socks, he should have gave it some pop there

Blogger CW said ... (9:48 AM) :

My personal preference would have been for socks that matched the suit, even with sneakers. Otherwise, this gent is very old school and in a good way.

Blogger demetric wheeler said ... (9:51 AM) :

I can only hope that im this carefree yet smart when it comes to style when age has it way with me.

Blogger Adriana Ximenes said ... (9:58 AM) :

Super with the current style of fashion!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:05 AM) :

I especially fancy the white tennis socks! Bravery!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:10 AM) :

Love the sneakers!
Anyone know who makes them?

Blogger Twain said ... (10:11 AM) :

He's adorable! Chapeau, sir.

Blogger Link said ... (10:12 AM) :

I don't think one should ever wear dark colored socks with white sneakers. This man's instincts were right on.

Blogger ahamill said ... (10:13 AM) :

i only hope to be this effortlessly youthful when i'm his age. totally made me smile and i would love to know what they were talking about!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

Can a French man get away with this, where a woman could not? I just remember how Europeans used to mock New York women for wearing running shoes with office wear on the street... He looks impeccable in any case.

Blogger artadviser said ... (10:19 AM) :

Pure style!

Blogger Laura said ... (10:21 AM) :

My favorite image ever! The man looks mischievious with those shoes...

Blogger Tristan said ... (10:27 AM) :

When he stands up those sneakers are going to look a slight too large. He could have gone with the slimmer/c taylors or dunlop volleys which would have streamlined the look.

I gotta stop criticising, its a good look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:27 AM) :

I can't imagine that outfit being more perfect. Mind you, he has got a lot of character to wear it...

Blogger Σταμπολούς Αλέξανδρος said ... (10:29 AM) :

ta ta!!

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (10:29 AM) :

i want his shoes!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:30 AM) :

That's charming! Brightened my day.

Blogger SOPHIA said ... (10:31 AM) :

Bow ties never fail as I always say. Wonderful outfit and beautiful model.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:36 AM) :

I love this shot.
I love this man.
Well done!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:38 AM) :

I know we are supposed to be admiring his style (and it is well worthy of admiration!) - but I'm too busy admiring his handsome face.

Blogger *moggit girls said ... (10:43 AM) :

The shoes make it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:44 AM) :

Love it! But i think he should try with blue navy socks... no?

Blogger Stefan said ... (10:46 AM) :

usually I hate pairing white socks with anything but sneakers and athletic shorts. here, somehow, he pulls it off. it must be the attitude, carefree, casual, confident.

the white of the sneakers and socks ties back to the shirt and somehow provides a balance.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:46 AM) :

the best thing here is his laugh lines. they are GREAT

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 AM) :

How does this photo exist? It's gorgeous.

Blogger Amy said ... (10:57 AM) :

This is perfect. So full of life!

Blogger Diana Brito said ... (11:02 AM) :

Dashing gentleman, great attire, super photograph...simply dashing!

Blogger diane said ... (11:08 AM) :

Where's he "running" off to? Cute smile.

Blogger pulp+witticism said ... (11:21 AM) :

I like a gentleman to look proper and crisp. Bow ties are lovely. As though he made an emotional note to dress nicely for others to enjoy. And the trainers, well, how else will you know of his humor?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:30 AM) :

Jean COCTEAU is alive !

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:34 AM) :

I'm curious what article of clothing he's holding in his lap? An overcoat?

I agree that you have to wear white socks with white tennis shoes. If you're pairing it with a dark suit, all the more daring!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:47 AM) :

Those sneakers are so great, any idea who makes them? I can only hope I will age as well as this guy.
Jacques styling here is second to none.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:49 AM) :

I love, love, love his sneakers. Super yummy!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:50 AM) :

Bow tie and sneakers. I just love it. Few men could pull that off. And he did.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:56 AM) :

This is the best pic you have taken thus far the composition, subject and that Cafe Flore feeling one gets just from looking at the picture transports one to Paris and the terrace.Tres Martine Franc

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:59 AM) :

magnificent!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 PM) :

Amazing! Unfortunately I am too young for this man, but he is very very sexy!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:02 PM) :

Nice outfit, plenty of panache! This gentle man exudes the Bon Vie Vant lifestyle. The sneakers look like
P.F. Flyers. The have reissued a multitude of styles.
Great Scott/Shot

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

this is for sure picture of the year...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 PM) :

I think it's a "Springcort" da vintage sneaker,i have da high-top one pair.I got it from Ebay.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:24 PM) :

great look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:28 PM) :

Amazing. Amazing, amazing, amazing...

Blogger Kathryn Luka said ... (12:47 PM) :

I think the white socks make the crisp, clean sneakers stand out even more. Matching socks would have taken away from the contrast of the suit to casual shoe.

Blogger hc said ... (12:53 PM) :

cuff the sneakers, he looks like a manikin

Blogger seanjonesfoto said ... (1:00 PM) :

so cool... and, most importantly, fun! great snap!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:07 PM) :

That is one very cool - and expertly tied - bow-tie.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:11 PM) :

Vive la France! Charming and transporting.

Blogger George Achebe said ... (1:17 PM) :

NO NO NO. This man is tremendously well-attired from the ankle up. There is absolutely no excuse for pairing otherwise great sports pumps with a more formal-wear orientated look. It seems contrived rather than stylishly creative. Great photo though, and an otherwise charming-looking chap.

Blogger Raul Villalobos said ... (1:21 PM) :

Love the suit and the color of the shirt. Dig on the fact that he leaves the sleeve cuffs undone, even go as far as to say that the sneakers tie it in. The bow tie however, not a fan of it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:32 PM) :

In response to Anonymous 10:19, I think the difference between running shoes in America and those worn in Europe, especially France, is that in France, with casual clothes, they tend to wear fine plimsolls, of a neat, streamlined, classic shape, so they look good with any kind of ensemble. Whereas hi-tech, chunky running shoes should only ever by worn when one is actually out for a run! This rule should apply on both sides of the Atlantic :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 PM) :

love everything: the bow tie on a slightly creased blue shirt, navy-white shoes(i dont mind the sox, in a way they complete the look), facial expression!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 PM) :

wow! i'm inspired

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:04 PM) :

I've often been nonplussed when people knock those wearing sneakers in the city, saying that sneakers ruin the outfit. As a start, they can be good for your feet when you trod a lot of concrete --
so, I'm enjoying a photo, great photo, showing a person wearing the sneakers well. I also don't mind the white socks, agreeing with the recent poster who said they balance with the shirt.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:09 PM) :

If I had the power--and I mean this in the most complimentary way--I'd turn this man to stone and seat him in my courtyard. Feeling blue or lonely or in need of a good giggle, I'd join him to share stories, secrets, a bottle of Sprite.

Blogger Gaia said ... (2:12 PM) :

NICE!

Blogger JP said ... (2:25 PM) :

Blogger cami falcão said ... (2:34 PM) :

this is awesome! a great stylish man that is not afraid of doing what he thinks is right.
attitude.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:34 PM) :

Yup, this guy's hit it on the mark. A bowtie is not for everyone, just for some. Takes a bit of elan to wear one. I could only aspire to to look this good. Thanks, Scott, great shot!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:41 PM) :

He is lovely and grand and exciting, and I want him for the afternoon!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:03 PM) :

This is the yummiest ever!

Blogger Lady Royale said ... (3:09 PM) :

i love he's style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:10 PM) :

it's odd how much we can (or think we can) infer from a single expression or item of clothing. I'm getting a mischievous sense of humor =) also it's really, really nice to see a different kind of shot on your blog.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:12 PM) :

Sorry, but imo this shoes doesnt fit..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:13 PM) :

that's exactly my goal when I think about classy and casual .... I wanna be like this man when I grow up

Blogger About Me said ... (3:22 PM) :

Not geriatric one bit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:25 PM) :

great pic Jacques having a sprite, that's very daring in a Parisian Café...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:37 PM) :

Waouh, quelle classe !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:42 PM) :

That´s amazing!!This guy doesn´t take himself too serious but still looks fantastic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:45 PM) :

Go with what works for you.
Personally, if I was going to the trouble of picking a pocket square, tieing a bow tie, and wearing a tab collar (it looks like a tab collar to me) then I'd go the extra mile and pick a pair of matching socks and a proper pair of shoes.
But, if this is the way that he feels best, then rock on.

Blogger Preppy Cool said ... (3:53 PM) :

This is a remarkable shot. The gentleman is just so cool. He's fly, and I doibt that he would ever use that word to describe him self. But it seems so appropriate. Scott you did it again...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:56 PM) :

so elegant ....

Blogger Jazzbuff630 said ... (4:03 PM) :

I want to party with this guy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:08 PM) :

The reason this is so perfect is that he looks completely absorbed in his conversation and not thinking about how he looks at all.

Blogger Keli said ... (4:24 PM) :

he is so precious. i wish it were me on the opposite side of the table, having a sprite with him.

Blogger Dominica said ... (4:27 PM) :

Don't agree with Tristan :
white socks work well with white sneakers ...those aren't tennis socks but probably white silk ones :-O

He looks like a gentleman that came in my store a couple of weeks ago...and he had a French accent !!
OMG !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:38 PM) :

Don't you love when a single outfit can speak volumes about the person wearing it? I particularly like JFK Jean's comment about this man wearing what he likes--yet still maintaining impeccable style--and daring someone to question him. I love the personality in this.

Luv' it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:03 PM) :

I second JFK Jean that if he was going to have fun down there, his feet I mean, a wow sock color would have had more impact. Think Van Johnson and his red or was it pink? socks. I personally don't like the white sneakery shoes, but oh, well. He's really appealing in every other way.

Blogger MarieAnn said ... (5:06 PM) :

I love it! Sometimes you just gotta go comfy...

Blogger Lemon for breakfast said ... (5:06 PM) :

Blogger Blair said ... (7:00 PM) :

The bottle of Sprite that he's drinking puts the cherry on top.

Blogger Joêlle said ... (7:29 PM) :

I would really like to know what he's smiling about... He seems like such an interesting man. Makes me wonder what the conversation was about.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:32 PM) :

Fantastic look and quite intimate picture. The total character has been captured. I like the balance of color from the socks to the pocket chief and shirt. I have seen a brand that matches ties with the socks which works really well. Award winning photography...congratulations!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:46 PM) :

I like the tennis shoes with the suit. There's probably some really practical reason as to why. I hope not. I hope he made his decisions on what to wear out of pure desire.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:55 PM) :

Tristan, what was he supposed to wear with those trainers if not athletic socks? Dark dress socks? Unhygienic bare feet?

Blogger MAZEL TOV said ... (8:16 PM) :

this is exactly how i picture paris. i love this photo, and love this blog. especially how the focus isn't just on female fashion!

i did a post on you on my own blog so check it out- so-youthinkyoucanblog.blogspot.com

Blogger The Voguette said ... (8:31 PM) :

he looks so amazing. i love how he's not afraid to wear bleach white socks and shoes with the ensemble - but i must say the blue in the shoe really make this outfit

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:59 PM) :

Wowwww que estilo!!

Blogger alexandrovka said ... (9:26 PM) :

I bet this gentleman is all about the finer things in life! He looks as though he is a man in the arts, maybe – a writer / a poet or maybe even a shoe repairman? You know those old school people that admire quality rather than quantity when it comes to everything. He has perfectly combined the classic suit which her wears so well – very French! And added a touch of modern – a little NYC! Also, at the first glimpse of this photograph I naturally assumed that he was holding a cigarette in his hand – it was his pose, his attitude the whole look – very French! And yet again we as the viewer are pleasantly surprised by the little green bottle on the table! Perfection!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:29 PM) :

No, the socks shouldn't match the suit. Boring! My preference would have been for red, or for a navy with white or coloured polka dots.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 PM) :

So much character in a man's face.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 PM) :

I am in love. What I wouldn't give to be the lucky one sitting across the table from this elegant and fun man. Oh....be still mon coeur.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:24 PM) :

As a regular bow tie wearer I am not surprised about seeing it. But it is the tie, the sneakers, and the suit taken together that speak volumes about this man's confidence and sense of knowing himself. Very inspiring. And Scott nailed the photograph, yet again, by capturing his impish grin. If you want a visual interpretation of the French phrase "joie d'vivre", well. this is it. Well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 AM) :

my favorite pic yet. absolutely beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 AM) :

srumdelicious yummeister. looooove it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:22 AM) :

This guy illustrates how it takes a real man to wear a bow tie. Any sissy can wear a regular tie or no tie at all, but I can tell you from personal experience, when you walk into a garage full of grease-monkeys in coveralls and you're wearing a bow tie, everybody in the place knows who the boss is! The sneakers and white socks look great too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:30 AM) :

I love your photos of "mature satorialists" - they are the ones that inspire me the most - more please.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:11 AM) :

reminds of Ads. in Burda around the early 80s (my first introduction to fashion); when the product wasn't the first thing to pop in your face rather than letting you live in the mood first.

it just could have been a Heineken instead of a sprite :D

Blogger Tristan said ... (6:00 AM) :

Dear Hat Lady,

Yes dark socks. But if that doesn't fly you can try no socks.

Why? Because i don't usually like pulling attention to the socks. Second when he stands, the hem of the trouser will crumple ontop of the sneaker because those are like pumps they aren't flat or thin enough for the trouser to fall over them seamlessly. Which is why i keep obsessing about chuck taylors.

Doesn't matter what we say though, because the most remarkable thing is he pulls it off in a very dashing and effortless manner. But my imagination keeps seeing dark socks and chuck taylors!

And you know what his smiling about?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 PM) :

I think I'm going to have to be the bad guy here... I like the sneakers-with-a-suit look, and I do agree that it probably means he's cool and has a fun personality, but as for the outfit itself, it just seems a little too contrived to me. It looks like he stood in front of his closet and thought for a long time trying to piece together a delightfully ironic outfit. If I found that he had a bunch of different suit-sneaker ensembles or that this was his daily uniform, I might feel differently, but...

Blogger Ben said ... (3:48 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:51 PM) :

come to think of it, that tie is what makes this work with the shoe sock combination

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:44 PM) :

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:01 PM) :

Very nice picture, although I have to say that, in my mind, the sneakers spoil everything. A mon humble avis, ce monsieur, si charmant soit-il, a l'air d'un guignol...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:36 PM) :

I think sneakers with a suit can look good, but the bow tie is what is throwing me off. I think a regular tie or no tie would have been better.

However, it's his confidence in the scene that is charming (and maybe even a little intimidating). You can see he's completely at ease being well-dressed and surrounded by what looks like more casually-dressed people.

This picture really captures a nice moment.

Blogger Reala said ... (8:31 PM) :

4 Great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:03 PM) :

Oh oui, oui! The noeud papillon (bowtie) is amazing with those sneakers! The pale pocket-square and the light colored socks finish the outfit fabulously. He's so French...I love it!

My grandmother, born in Milan in 1908, told me to start with the handkerchief and the shoes when I meet a man.
I do believe that she would appreciate only the handkerchief, and me too.

It is the photo that makes us want to know this man. The white socks and the Sprite make me think he is not French. He appears so comfortable in his skin that you want to listen in to whatever he is talking about. The photographer's eye, not just the clothes made the man. Wonderful shot.

FINALLY, someone without a frickin scarf beehived around his neck

I love this photo because it is so alive and fresh. I could almost feel the cold, but fresh air. It shows that he's truly smiling, from the little wrinkles, but this man inspired me that every age has a beauty.

Thanks Scott

I'd like to be having coffee with him. What a great outfit.

Great character, great smile, great style - wish I could go for a coffee with him and learn a thing or two

Hi Scott, I know I'm really late with this comment, but just wanted to say that this is my favourite shot of the year so far. Very inspiring.

Congrats on the Ossendriver interview by the way. I went to the men's store here in Paris the other day, and now I'm getting married in made-to-measure Lanvin!

Wonderful informal shot i have always loved the bow tie (papillon in french)
I like the fact that he has the lightness and humour to wear these trainers but feel its just a little too overworked and knowing would have prefered a soft suede loafer or a sebago classic ox blood.
But from the ankle up cant knock it..thats just the image you envisage sitting on the table next to you when you are taking your cafe creme non?
Sexy beast!

No doubt, he is the better. My brother Adalto says that he is what we got do be in the future xD

bow tie and sneakers? charming! and because his suit and tie are navy blue I can't help but wonder if the shirt is cambridge blue or white? Any opinions? (I'm convinced it's cambridge blue)
