This is the NYC cousin of the plain Parisienne. Better boots, better bag, but still too much black. Still funereal.
Also, it is more practical to wear a longer coat when wearing stretch pants/tights.
Wonderful coat and leggings. The boots add flair and are great! On top of great style she's beautiful! Wow! Terrific photo! Let her down gently, though, and tell her I'm already married...
Follow-up - the bag in foreground would probably work for both men and women.

it's the sardonic conflict in it's inhabitants face, going somewhere, never posing, and beautifully oblivious to the fact of our glamarociousness.

LOVE this. It just looks so personal...I feel like she very specifically bought every part of this. Simple and serious but still very sexy, but somehow she keeps it sweet also.
It's not necessary all expensive....I have that cape, and it's Kate Moss for Top Shop last year. Love her look though.

My feeling is that it's all about insecurity and the lack of confidence (or is it knowledge?) to deal with color..."You can't go wrong with black" is the invariable and silly statement offered as a response...Ironic because consequently the message sent is: "I have no idea how to dress otherwise"!
A bit blah to me except for the bag. Why do New Yorkers have to dress in black top to bottom?

I'm leading here and now a crusade against black color...My feeling is that enough is enough! It doesn't make sense that, for example in Sydney, on any given day in Summer when temperatures reach 40 degrees plus, the "stylish" go about town fully dressed in black sweating and gasping for air, does it? Whatever happened to the idea that one would tune in with the seasons which leaves little room for black especially in a country like Australia.
The buttons becoming larger from top to bottom really lends a bit of whimsy to that cape and maybe even to her.
Why are people afraid of color? I guess there's less thought as to whether things work together if it's all black. There are even professions where it really pays off and others where it's the uniform of the day. Maybe that's her life.

But mostly in this case i want to relish the photo: the depth, three dimensionality created by the three bags; the three light squares ( one on the wall, one in sticking out of her bag, and the sidewalk) Great composition, both hers and Scott's.
This woman and "Slashed" down below both look like they forgot their pants. And they both look freezing cold. It's winter, people! I know you want to look cool, but didn't your mother tell you to wear a hat and a scarf when you go outside? See Rei above.

I agree that many people really can't coordinate colors or don't understand them. Wearing all black takes that issue off the table, but it's giving up which is kind of sad. Also, if everything you own is black I guess you have unlimited combinations...

One other practical idea about all black in winter in NYC: The city can get unbelievably gross this time of year.
There's often unpredictable slush/sleet/snow/rain and all sorts of nastiness on every street corner. Let's not even talk about the subway (although I doubt this woman ever rides the subway.) Certain colors are less practical. I always laugh when I see people in white parkas in New York and think, good luck...
black offers a constant chic for people who work a lot and don't have to spend too much time on what they're wearing. its effortless, flattering, and yes, it can look expensive whether or not it is.

Black IS the new black! And that goes whether you're in Washington or NYC. She totally rocks this look. The main thing about the ensemble is the proportions. She has it exactly right. The tights look like Wolford (to Anonymous, above)to me. For the record, I live in Sydney and I wear black. But I manage to stay cool all year round.
