Comments on "On the Street....Le Marais, Paris"
Gorgeous picture! Very Paris.
i love how europeans can't be bothered to flink the ask off their cigarettes. i think it says a lot about the difference americans and the french (or spanish, italian, etc.)
I rarely actually think smoking is sexy.... but in Paris, it is.
wow.
what a stunning shot.
well done.
She looks like a cross between Jeanne Moreau and young Brigitte Bardot, on her way home after a night with her lover. Wonderful!
How do you keep getting such amazing photos?!
A cinema moment...inspirational
-s
Oh, I often still wish I were a smoker! Funny how your body misses things so profoundly even when your brain says "done".
At any rate, I like this woman's purposeful stride.
Were you on a motorbike? Beautiful rich tones in this picture! Nice one!
Magnificent. I agree, this is incredibly Paris.
very walk of shame...
What a shot! The rearview mirror on the bike (or is it a moto?), the crystal-clear focus on the girl, wow.
Totally timeless and classic--coat, bag, hair, makeup (or lack thereof, but she's so lovely she doesn't need it). She will only regret the cigarette later.
I would love to put my hair up like that, but if I walk quickly it falls down. What is the trick?
Uau!
Great pic!
Love it! The jacket and the bag are great choices.
this picture is absolutely perfect!
Love her Dior...
This picture is timeless, and gorgeous. The benz in the background is the only thing in the photo that gives it away as contemporary. Just lovely!
looks like a movie still from godard.
she is hot!!wearing amazing bag and jacket..waa lah
are they filming a new version of "the hills" in paris? ;)
Love the belted coat!
And, yes, this photo just screams Paris, no caption necessary.
i love this picture most of all
WOW! AMAZING shot!
I wish she didn't make smoking look so cool.
reminds me of the new wave. a bout de souffle. a new Jane Seberg.
I love the picture and what she is wearing. It's a shame she is smoking though as I really don't think it suits her. If you imagine the picture without the cigarette you'd think here is a stunning looking girl that probably smells of Chanel perfume. Instead you'd think here is a stunning looking girl that probably smells of Marlborough lights.
tellement Paris, french woman just know how to play it
oh so well
*bisous*
ohh...this is your first black/white image that i see
in some moment is b/w the best
i like it...
How I miss living in Paris... Picture is beautifully shot too, adds style to an already stylish outfit.
Sexy!
She smokes! Why do some still believe that a cigarette is an accessory?
maria
This look like an old picture, is really great.
Une vraie parisienne
Now thats my kind of girl: one killer accessory (handbag) and the rest, keep it very classic and very simple. Agree with Heloise, great light and picture!
She's lovely, but looks like she's coughing.
The black & white just captures her.
Gorgeous girl, and I love love love the belted coat!
pretty girl!
this picture tells such a great story.
beautiful, all but the cigarette!
WOW WOW WOW!!!
Great picture. the black and white, the motion, the perspective. Cinema still?
Nice one
Adorable!!!
Great, great picture!
thats so so pretty! shes gorgeous!! tres chic!
Good cigarette, nice attitude!!
Wonderful... if it weren't for the cars in the background (and perhaps those lapels), this could have been taken in the 60s or 70s.
She looks cool, I would like to see her dress. It'd be beautiful, like the other clothes
This has got to be one of your first black and white pictures. Amazing. Straight out of a French film noir.
Very nice picture. Has a "soft" touch to it.
Ahh! B&W, how beautifully perfect...
Love her lady Dior¡¡ and her hair is perfect¡
Fantastic shot!
Congratulations.
Her face reflectin Paris in this days.
Enric, from Barcelona.
Wonderful B/W photo.
I bet this lady only use half an hour to tidy up herself, but it's just great!! little mess hair, but i like it!
is that Doutzen?
Fantastic shot!
Congratulations.
Her faces reflecting Paris in this days.
Enric, fron Barcelona.
This is amazing... This is art. I want to hang this pic at my wall... So much expression about it. What she's thinking, where she's about to go? Love the laid back hair... a perfect shot, really!
i love the black and white. that never happens here!
Love how you introduced the side mirror/image! Don't love the ciggy--she could be walking around the states looking like that. Actually looks like someone that just woke up at her boyfriends and is making her way home.
she's so beautiful!
love this. wish I was classy enough to pull off that messy hair style. Love the composition, and the reflection in the mirror.
I love her coat, just shrugged on unassumingly. She looks fabulous even though she seems cold and tired. Great shot!
So parisienne... Love it !
Oh Sart... your editor will have a really hard time editing your book. There are soooo many good pictures to chose from...
BCBG!
agreed and i love how it looks somewhat voyeuristic. did you set up the shot like that or was it candid?
true...i was just about to say: "very parisienne very"....i would have known it wa sparis immediately!
nancy
i wish it was winter in australia...
I love the way her hair and coat have been tied in a hurry as she was dashing out of the house, yet she still looks so chic.
I also like the way the mirror is hinting at her surroundings.
I stayed two weeks+ in the Marais and she reminds me of many of the women That I saw, that tousled, yet chic look.
Tellement parisienne! Thank you for all your pictures! they are an endless source of inspiration!
healthy!
amazin pic!
love the B&W... and the Dior bag of course...
love this picture...
Stunning picture.. Herb eat your heart out!
I just love that this picture is black and white
i was in paris for the first time (!) last week and found myself walking behind two women with very similar, messy, high chignons.
in true sartorialist-reader fashion, i found myself meditating on it for a large part of the morning. in america, this style would be considered sloppy (and really only fit for a walk of shame back to your dorm room), but it seems to fit in perfectly with parisian style. any thoughts as to why it works so well?
Reminds me of Charlotte Casiraghi. Very chic!
I like the bag, tres chic.
I love the combination of fierceness and vulnerability.
Lady Dior bag looks great on the girl.
this is definitely one of your best pictures.
well done Sr.
wow that looks like right from some magazine....fantastic
i love it! black and white is my fav. format for pics...but i which i could get a close up of that charm on the bag...looks so cute!
Is it the cigarette that makes this photo? If so, it's sad as we all know it's an unhealthy habit. The only thing I like is her hair.
is that you in the vespa's side mirror?? love the shot
There is always something sexy about haplessly pulled up hair and a cigarette! It seems that she just woke up and "walla" a chic city photo moment...
Love it. Great shadows, great mood.
Yah people will bitch about romanticising the cigarette and smoking, blah blah blah but take it from someone who has NEVER smoked a day in her life (cigarettes, that is), I still find shots of people smoking to be glamorous. I can't help it. Though it's very bad, it looks very good :)
Besides, that's what people do in Europe and you've captured it well.
chic parisienne!
Just when you're trying to persuade kids it's not cool to smoke, along comes along a picture like this and throws your theory out the window. She looks stunning and the cigarette makes the photo! How annoying!
Sart!! On Point! She is well dressed with her short coat and stockings and purse and cigarette and perfect eyebrows and hair. And you captured it oh so well with the black and white photo! So, So, French...You rock!
fantastic photo! i love the reflection in the scooter mirror. paris (et cette jeune fille) often lends itself beautifully to black and white shots!
very chic. however, when will people, europeans included, realize that smoking is passé?
smoking a cig has never been more sexy
Hair in a rubber band, no makeup, looks like someone is making the "walk of shame". If you could look in her purse, you'd find her panties and a phone number scrawled drunkenly on a cocktail napkin.
One last word...whether the reflection in the motorcycle mirror was intentional or not, it really works for me. You have a Noir photograph with a little Alfred Hitchcock effect thrown on as the icing. Great!
Dopeness!!!!!!!!..look at those Ray Bans with the salt and pepper grey
Looks like a latter-day Audrey Hepburn/Breakfast at Tiffany's moment. Very stylish on her walk of shame.
im quite dying to know whats on her feet
Great shot - beautiful girl ... but she looks like she is coughing; that takes a bit of the romance away.
That is probably one of the most gorgeous pictures I've ever seen.
the girl resembles Doutzen Kroes!
Love this photo. It's SO French!
Wonderful!
love the black and white color, so chic..
Haunting. Existential. Provocative. Someday, someone will write an entire novel about this girl, this photograph.
lovely photo, love the trench
I love this B&W shot! It is gorgeous!
Gorgeous girl too!
Love the style..
I am not crazy about the girl, I must say. However, what a beautifully-framed shot! I love the blurry gate obfuscating the view of a Parisian subject in motion. Fantastic!
This looks to be a perfect example of why I quit smoking: I love my clothes too much. Are those not burnholes near the hem of her coat in front?
Lovely girl, though, and a beautiful photograph.
wowsers...
- she looks like she just rolled out of bed and was just as beautiful w sleep in her eye as with the leggings and awesome coat!
I miss France...
Beautiful picture.
i wish she weren't hunching or smoking but i like the messy hair, the coat, the stockings, the stride. wish you caught her shoes.
great action. great feeling. great choice of black and white.
what a rad photo - besides the delicate beauty trying to stay warm we are given a fantastic self portrait. very clever
the picture is wonderful (as always) but i'm not impressed by her clothing at all. She looks like every other 20-something girl.
Insanely beautiful.I like her laidback bun;D
Preciosa fotografía!
AMAZING shot!!!
Something about the complete candor of this shot gives her whole appearance just that much more of a sense of completion.
The bag with the coat looks fantastic, especially with the minor amount of adornments.
héloïse said what i came here to say. i love the picture!
This girl should date me. --James.
She looks as if she's had a long night. Maybe good or not so good, but she's still stylish. lol
stunning - is this the first b&w i have seen on the blog... I am trying to remember. Its beautiful. I love the coat, the way her legs look like a brush stroke in the black tights. I love the clean face and the loose up do tres chic.
Paris je t' aime
smoke is not good...
Love frey black and white pictures, they are so artistic
Trés chic! This is why books like "All You Need to Be Impossibly French..." exist!
This is quintessentially Parisian chic, no Westerner can pull off casual like this....
amazing....femine, edgy and chic :)
how i would like to look haha xoxo
Exquisite picture, Sart! She looks like a very young Jeanne Moreau.
Wonderful picture! It has the mood of when fashion gets mixed with the real tough quick everyday life. I love it!
this makes me miss Paris... :(
oh this is simply gorgeous! very old worldly.
if only we could all appear so glamourous on our early morning walk of shame.
Black and white always gives this extra edge to a picture...it just looks like a movie still....
Wonderfull !
Beautiful Photography! i want to frame it!
i love the picture! what camera have you used?
absolutely stunning.
Beautiful in b/w but, what are the colors of her ensemble?
Ahhhh, to look so chic without a lot of work. The young have it...
O! So Paris! Fantastic moment!
Lovely shot. I'm not sure if this resembles the "walk of shame" or a sad girl after a bad breakup. In any case, I love everything but the cancer stick. She'd look much more cosmopolitan with an ipod or something in her hand, in place of the cigarette.
Beautiful picture- it looks almost voyeuristic
i love this picture so so much
I'd say too bad the mirror of the scooter didn't made the picture imperfect.
BUT....then I see a reflection of Mr Sartorialist himself, and now it IS a perfect picture.
The only reason why this picture is not 100% perfection is the cigarette. But that's just my personal opinion.
Awsome shot.
I adore this photo! She is very sexy.
Beautiful beautiful shot!
over the years, with the birth of digital and the death of film, it's amazing to see how people respond so much to monochrome - both in a visceral, and yet, undiscerning way.
what a capture!
Wow, this is a favorite shot for sure. Verry nice.
I have a coat very similar; I love the way it feels like a "lined bathrobe", but looks very classic.
I agree with the multitude of comments on your wonderful picture taking capabilities, maestro. xo
great shot. definitely a marais girl!
I also would like to know how to make my hair look like that.
and I wish we could see her shoes...!
beautiful girl, beautiful picture. it reminds the best photos from peter lindbergh. nice work sart!
She looks cold.
such a great shot!!
If I could take out the cigarette and add some lovely leather gloves... for her sake and that of the otherwise magical image.
this is art!
The shoulder on her coat is fantastic; a great, simple ensemble.
This thread has also reminded me that the only thing more irritating than smoking is uppity self-righteous non-smokers.
Great Image!
In this single frame, you've captured the fleeting creature in it's most natural, translucent state. What a high that must have been.
Her hair and attitude are sooooo Parisian!
great action shoot.
it makes me miss le marais, there is smoething about this that makes me think of jules et jim. it might be the monochrome or something about the inadvertent erotic nature of this girl. seductive but not slutty. haahaha
love the hair and lady dior bag. butt the ciggy looks painful!
If she was holding an ipod or cell phone instead of a cigarette, would we be as compelled to give her a story?
Amazing picture...love all the greys and blacks. This picture is definitely very...Paris!
I could stare at this picture for an hour, just reading everything about this image... I'd say "you should start selling artist's prints", but the book's coming out eventually, so I guess we'll have to wait for that first!
Art! If it were not for your copyright, which I shall respect, I'd like to live with this image. Thanks for showing some of your work in b/w.
What an incredible photo! The mood is so evocative of European angst in black and white, I'm weak in the knees. And the blurry bike with her in focus - you had to catch this in a hurry. Ya done good!
Forget fashion this is timeless style.
Louise you're beautiful comme toujours
Shes beautiful. And with that coat, she looks like she just got out of bed to meet someone, careless because she knows her beauty
Tres Chic , looks like Charlotte of Monaco !
beautiful shot!
love the rear view mirror placement in the picture
This is just a beautiful shot. All the greys, and blacks. She looks wonderful and as though she has a story to tell.
beautiful. holding the cig makes it so cool too. why i dont know, it shouldnt, but it just does. also in B and w, just wow. i know i am not saying much different than everyone else but its pics like this that put you over the top sart!!!
Nope, in my opinion, the cigarette lends an air of old-world romance and perfectly matches the b&w tone of the picture (an iPod or phone would seem incongruous and destroy the glamor of the shot, I think).
But I am really writing because of the hair: I'm a fan of the messy bun look, but this seems to be a kind of double bun with a soft part on the right and one casually overlooked strand. What is going on here and do you think it would it be possible to imitate, if not recreate? I'd love to hear thoughts or suggestions, seeing as you're clearly a fashionable bunch. :-) Thanks!
Great shot, great eye, great sense of composition...That's why I'm completely adicted to this blog!!!!
I love youuuuuuuuuu, the Sartorialist!!!!! Tks for all those stunning shots of yours!
Free hugs,
Ana
she makes smoking look cool
Absolutely wonderful.
he, b+w! nice one.
My guess is this photo would be so-so were it in color. In black and white, however, it has to be my favorite of anything I have seen you do. If they were creating a pictorial dictionary for French phrases, she would be the entry for je ne sais quoi. The hair, the lips, the legs, the bag; no jewelry (visible), not even simple earrings, and short nails with no polish; wearing a coat that, perhaps, was not the one she wore to wherever it is she is now rushing from. First cigarette for the day, for a nicotine kick until she gets to the first cafe au lait of the day. Utterly inspiring - you've caught a muse on film!
It's a beautiful shot. You certainly got it, congratulations!!!
but, I don't think it captures any particular beauty on the part of the subject. I agree that her look, face, and clothes are a little mundane. But is that the point? Are you trying to show us ordinary, plain people elevated to the sublime?
This is beautiful. I love her, shes so cute. I also love tobacco chic, I dont smoke myself but just love it in photos...can't really explain it
she looks like doutzen, what is she covering up?
I'm in love.
And yes, she makes smoking look irresistible.
tres chic!
Motion in motion!
Glad to see this in your photography.
This reminds me of a famous italian photo.
I think my last post didn't go through, so I'll add again,
motion in motion. Glad to see you bring motion into your work - and, yes, I know, this isn't the first time.
i'd love to know what shoes she was wearing...
I concur with the consensus. This shot is one of your very best Sart, and I really appreciate your enthusiasm. Your work of late has been moving to a completely other level of inspiration.
She is gorgeous. So Parisienne, so perfect. This picture just makes me smile.
Thank you!
getting artsy, are we sart?
I like the way her legs contrast with her bulky/blurry coat.
I guess I am only echoing what others have said, but this picture is so well composed. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, I am sure I could write atleast 1002...
Appreciated, as always.
beautiful shot. it looks like all is busy around her, but she's having a quiet moment with herself. And I love how the light is reflected of the mirror in the foreground
im in love with it.
In the early seventies, my very bourgeoise French grandmother and mother were saying that it was not appropriate for a woman to smoke on the street (my grandmother and my mother were both chain smokers, but would have never been caught smoking on the street).
Love her Dior bag! This is a stunning photo!
isn't it doutzen kroes????????
I have been staring at this picture since you posted it. And I can't help but wonder, did you plan the whole mirror of the scooter and your reflection bit? Given that you caught the girl in movement, it seems to me that it is a miracle that you even got the picture. The fact that it is perfect is amazing. Either way, planned or not planned, this picture is a blessing. I want to frame it and put it in my room.
she is effortlessly stylish and you have captured her is a near perfect moment where her thoughts are covered with the downward eyes but still the image speaks volumes!
I do love this picture.
is she Charlotte Casiraghi?
