On the Street....Big Bad Plaid, Bowery

I always think that a big plaid will make everything look too square, but the cut of the coat (above) and the size he chose to buy really help to reduce the bulk of the overall look.

I love how the color of the red buffalo plaid cap and blue scarf really make this outfit standout or outstanding.

OOh love the look of this second bottom guy, great shoes and jacket - he carries it all cofidently too. Great find!

Blogger Post-it boy said ... (10:25 AM) :

Love the plaid jacket. Nice length.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:26 AM) :

Thank you. That first jacket is outstanding

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:26 AM) :

I like the cut of the jeans in both pictures. Too many men don't know how to wear jeans in the correct size.

Blogger Ondo Lady said ... (10:26 AM) :

They look hot but in a cool way. I like the lower picture a lot as I feel the guy looks totally chilled and comfortable in his skin.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:29 AM) :

It is nice that both of these gentlemen are wearing crisp, new jeans. These jeans let the jackets, shoes and accessories "do the talking".

Blogger The Concrete Commentator said ... (10:31 AM) :

Yes..I agree as well! Nice pop of color.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

William Downs has always had great style!

Blogger Jingoist said ... (10:40 AM) :

Love the dark denim- made better by the fact he mixed lights and darks so well in the ensemble.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:48 AM) :

This past Saturday, while crossing the street at State and Division in Chicago, I passed an elderly black man wearing a wonderfully funky outfit that he had obviously put together to please himself. Absolutely nothing trendy, but each piece he wore seemed really comfortable with every other piece. I smiled at him, told him he looked great; he beamed. I thought, Sart would photograph this man. I'm posting this because until I began pouring over the photos on this site, I would have likely overlooked a true sartorialist encountered in the middle of a busy intersection.
So, thank you, Sart, for the lessons in appreciation.

Blogger Laura said ... (10:57 AM) :

The jeans that the plaid man is wearing are quite awesome as well...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:59 AM) :

the top 'fit is absolute perfection. my personal style is a little more rustic, but i appreciate the way he made a rugged plaid coat look a bit more sophisticated. the second look i have mixed feelings about. i love the pieces but i have a problem with the execution and fit. the aesthetic reasoning between the coat, vest shirt and scarf are bothering me. love the fit of the jeans, the hat and the redwings, though...

Blogger TMFA said ... (11:09 AM) :

The top guy's style is a keeper!
I think I have seen that plaid coat in the topshop before.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:34 AM) :

i love the plaid jacket in the top picture, the cut,fit and relatively muted tones of the plaid really make it work. I feel with tailored garments one can get away with fabrics that look very bold or even outlandish on the bolt whereas the same may not be true of dress fabrics (unless you're Muicca Prada or Vivienne Westwood..
For me the look in the second picture is not so remarkable. sure the gentleman looks good, very good, but it has been a trend in fashion in the past few years to pay attention to accessories and there are so many great hats, scarfs, bags etc out there it's not hard or particularly original to add some flair to one's outfit. Interesting post - very Happy New Year, Sart and to all fellow commenters too , i love the discussions your blog provokes!

Have been cooling my heels in cold and slightly snowy Paris waiting for a sartorialist hit...these will do for a start...I am not quite ready to go N Maine woods (I'll except Rogues Gallery) as thats more sea captain anyway) just yet...again...maybe blutcher mocs...not to utilitarian...although Paul Smith has a line out that has some great plaid wools in a itsy bitsy cut...SIZE UP

Blogger Pinkaloo said ... (11:46 AM) :

I love dark jeans without a faded wash on guys, makes them look lean and clean. :) Love this blog!

Blogger Kay said ... (12:06 PM) :

I absolutely love the top one. The slouchy hat and wash of the jeans just make it pure cool. Normally I think turned up collars can look a little pretentious/Kings Road-y but he pulls it off.

Blogger Hemaly said ... (12:09 PM) :

The first guy's plaid is so flattering. I expected something like lumberjack plaid!

Blogger Cheltenhamdailyphoto said ... (12:12 PM) :

I like them both but the bottom guy looks great. Everything seems to fit and that flash of blue is the finishing touch.

Blogger diane said ... (12:30 PM) :

Yes, I agree that the crisp jeans these men are wearing really make their outfits complete.

Blogger Dr. Debonaire said ... (12:39 PM) :

I love the plaid coat and the dark wash on both jeans.

Blogger Arya said ... (12:43 PM) :

i really love the jeans in both of these pictures. the second guy especially reminds me of your denim and workwear theme from earlier posts Mr. Schuman

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:53 PM) :

I am so crazy about his coat and the creased, cuffed jeans atop the work boots in the lower photo that he could be wearing a chihuahua on his head and look terrific. I don't know how many people in NYC actually split firewood, but this gentleman looks quite capable.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:55 PM) :

William is always so stylish and unexpected!

Blogger Camille said ... (1:22 PM) :

What an image; the combination of his slouchy hat with sleek boots, his warm browns and dark wash jeans, naturally contrast and compliment one another.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:29 PM) :

Really nice jackets they are wearing in the two shots

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:30 PM) :

Wow, the bottom guy is the most attractive man I've seen here for a long time. Very sexy. It's not so much about the clothes. He simply looks very masculine and confident. I want his number ;)!

Blogger davelane said ... (1:38 PM) :

Love the bottom fellow, but the fact that his under sweater (vest?) exposes so much of his shirt at the bottom annoys me.

What do others feel about this?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:47 PM) :

I wonder if the curves in the plaid pattern is what makes it. That is to say that due to the virtue of the fit the placement of the dark vertical stripe is curved inward at the waist, helping establish a svelte shape. It may also help that he is crossing his arms. Would it look the same is that stripe wasn't there?

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (1:52 PM) :

I like the colors of their jeans.

And the second man knows how to mix his cloths. Good choice of colors.

But still...how many degrees is it in NYC?? It looks cold.

Blogger Michael said ... (1:58 PM) :

I have that first coat. It's from APC winter 07.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:08 PM) :

I wish we could see the top guys shirt. I love the shoes, jean, jacket and the beanie add his own personal style. Just wish I could see the complete look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:13 PM) :

That first photo vindicates not just big plaid, but also the staying power of skinny jeans (which I thought would be long over by now). Love the composition of darks.

Blogger Rita said ... (2:22 PM) :

The first guy looks great, I love the coat.

Blogger Premton said ... (2:33 PM) :

The Red Wings are a nice kick.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:41 PM) :

William Downs usually wears tons of plaid- he has so many glasses.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:05 PM) :

the jacket in the first photo is by A.P.C., which explains why it's so perfect.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:24 PM) :

The 2nd gentlemen is very well edited. Scannining from head-to-toe, every piece says something. But how about a deeper cuff on the jeans for sure- it looks a little non-committal.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:01 PM) :

Does somebody know which shoes he is wearing?

Blogger CULTURE CREATORS said ... (5:11 PM) :

Fresh. Layers are fantastic.

Blogger Love + Cake said ... (5:36 PM) :

Yeah, I absolutely love that first one.

x.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:16 PM) :

i love the first guy's coat. i love the kind of lumberjack style coat and casual coat with fancier jeans and shoes.

Blogger Jenny said ... (6:19 PM) :

Crisp jeans and redwing boots? Yes please.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:37 PM) :

Are you all referring to William Downs the artist? I'm curious.

To Jack Daniel - it was bitter over the weekend but warmer today. This is the fourth year in a row i'm saying it's my last winter in New York but this year i may actually mean it. Hope you're somewhere sunny and warm.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:27 PM) :

I love both images, and especially the coat the second dude is wearing, and the jeans on the first dude.

Blogger Leonardo said ... (9:01 PM) :

Nice shoes in the first photo.
I really appreciate it.

Blogger J. M. said ... (9:10 PM) :

The guy in the top picture looks warm and smart not so keen on beanies though.

Blogger Mel Carrey said ... (9:35 PM) :

plaid looks absolutely finee

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 PM) :

It seems like A.P.C. COAT...

Blogger thwany said ... (10:17 PM) :

everything that the first guy is wearing fits him so well.

Blogger SparkleQueen said ... (12:02 AM) :

I reallyy love these outfits. Fantastic choice of color palette.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:41 AM) :

The shoes on the second guy looks perfect, does somebody knows what it is?

Blogger Bedlam said ... (7:41 AM) :

I like the look of these Great style!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:21 AM) :

The first guy had a really nice jacket. Any ideas on where to buy it?

Blogger J.A.F. said ... (8:39 AM) :

The first look is so well put together that it's hard to see the second look working. Not sure about the second guy's too short sweater vest underneath that great coat. Some things are working some are not, he appears fractured. The Redwing work boots however are bomb!

Blogger Evelyn said ... (8:55 AM) :

The first look great, slimmer than one's think after wearing a big plaid jacket- maybe it's the magic of the size of the jacket and dark navy jeans/ and that pair of shoes should be given a credit as well.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:15 AM) :

I really like both outfits! nice!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 AM) :

I've been looking for a plaid coat like that for quite some time. The A.P.C. winter 07 is quite hard to find, i reckon. Anyone know of somewhere I can find a similar coat?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:12 PM) :

as a red wing fan I really like to see the many ways poeple are combining their red wings with other clothes...

last time I said something about model-no.´s I made a little mistake, ...I´v got so many different pairs though,...

but these are model 0875, without a doubt. =)

Blogger green lantern said ... (3:31 PM) :

What is really sharp is really, really, really big Houndstooth!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:41 PM) :

Yes, that is William Downs, the artist.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:37 AM) :

love that plaid!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:03 AM) :

i love them both. plaid in top beautiful and well put together with dark jeans, cap. man at bottom beautiful colors, hat included. wish vest were a little bigger, but feel guilty saying it b/c he's lovely.

Blogger Bradford said ... (9:17 AM) :

I love the historic Sunshine Hotel in the background. One of the last remnants of old Bowery....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

1st guy needs to ditch the slouchy toque. It's too sufu (-1). Maybe it is someone from sufu! Nice fit on the jacket though.

2nd guy's RWs are gaah, great. Love the pop of blue.

Blogger Dan in Richmond said ... (11:02 AM) :

The colors of the jacket in the top photo help it look sleek, along with the cut and size. It is a nice silhouette with the jeans and those great boots/shoes. The hat could very well work, too- I think I'd have to see how it compliments his face to tell. When I wear that type of cap ( which are often very practical to wear) I tend to pull the excess fabric forward and to one side, almost beret-like, although fitted. Gives it a different look.

Blogger Lazy P said ... (3:18 PM) :

you should shoot at a shipyard or factory in the midwest so all us cityfolk can see some more "True American" fashion. Great looks on both of these guys.

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:01 PM) :

Nice, but it all looks a bit too new. Im not sure he's taking a chance, just layering up in the usual suspects, redwings, aps, woolens vest from earnest sewn? The vest is too short and the lapels of the jkacket are too femme. Scarf is great though, as is the general expression of the guy.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:05 PM) :

Well when someone's slim and buys clothes that fit, they tend to not look bigger I guess. I do like the brown of it. I've seen so much red, blue and even green plaid print that it's nice to see a different color.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

It is A.P.C.
Also a recurrent coat on Gossip Girl,
the Dan character wears it all the time.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:29 PM) :

The vest on the second gentlemen is a highly collectable and fabulous vintage find-I have seen a few over the years in NY at Stock. He has done a great job mixing it into a contemporary street look....So psyched to see this great peice of American fashion!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:21 PM) :

William Downs was the best drawing teacher ever
and a pretty stylish man

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:30 PM) :

The second gentleman is wearing a vintage Brown's Beach vest- very vintage very cool- which is why it's a little short. I think he looks perfect. His style is very workwear. I work at Bobby From Boston and this is what we're obsessed with!

Blogger D said ... (5:26 PM) :

I would like to have a conversation with Mr. Spectacles.

Blogger Jordan Morton said ... (9:33 PM) :

Oh I want that plaid jacket. It's perfect.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:20 AM) :

Has anyone got an idea about the jeans in the Top photo? Great fit!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:49 PM) :

I like the one on top because fit is everything and that is a great fitting outfit. The bottom pic with the high vest looks awkward. I don't care if it IS collectible. It doesn't fit well. Maybe it would look better on someone smaller.

Blogger Robbie said ... (7:35 PM) :

what type of pants are being worn in the first photo?
Im in love with them.
