On the Street....NYU Two, NYC

Little details
- Pink bow on her sets the perfect attitude
- Love the proportion of his plaid flannel shirt jacket and his barely there string belt

Her clothes are timeless; I think the pink bow may actually be a tongue-in-cheek statement but she pulls it off. Nothing is out of place, yet she tones thing down by having a slight bedhead look. His outfit works on someone under 23 who is still in school or in a highly creative profession, or self-employed. The rest of us, please abstain! Jorge from W Palm Beach

the girl is very well dressed.
the boy's jacket is nice too. I am only not so sure about the Onitsuka shoes.

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:27 AM) :

I like how the missmatch between their styles enhance great details in both of their outfits.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:28 AM) :

Adorable, right down to the shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 AM) :

This is a great photo! i love the girl's colours, her shoes and you are right - the pink bow is perfect. The guys plaid shirt is cool, the string is funny and ironic and i like the way he picks up the red laces with his backpack straps. They look like such a nice, friendly couple -very intune.

Blogger re:definition said ... (8:38 AM) :

that kid looks ridiculous in his boys flannel and kids back pack.

the rest is fine.

Blogger Remah said ... (8:48 AM) :

Her shoes and jacket go so well. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:57 AM) :

oh to be young again..............

Blogger meredith said ... (9:38 AM) :

The pink bow is definitely tongue in cheek. Oh to be a student and be expressive with your clothes!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 AM) :

SART,

Why do you love the proportion of the too-small thrift store jacket?

Blogger Rita said ... (10:12 AM) :

The girl's outfit is great, I like her shoes very much.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:15 AM) :

i love his look. her is well done but his makes me look twice. right on Sart, it's his proportions that do it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:15 AM) :

Not sure anything about their garb would have struck me as note-worthy. In the NYU/Union Square scene, these two don't stand out at all IMHO, just another grungy day without a lot of imagination.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:19 AM) :

I love his color-coordinated shoes & backpack!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:22 AM) :

I think they are adorable.

Was this picture taken in front of the New School? I have a friend who went there and I vaguely remember it, although don't live in New York.

Blogger STEFANIE said ... (11:03 AM) :

they look amazing together, and verry happy :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:13 AM) :

Loving her pink-rust-black scheme, shame about the cigarette habit...

Blogger VanessasRunway said ... (11:34 AM) :

He has some cool shoes...

Blogger Cristina said ... (11:38 AM) :

i am in LOVE with these two. adorable

Blogger "the girl who ate everything and didnt even burp" said ... (11:48 AM) :

I can't decide on who I'd like to dressed as among the two! Oh I'll take both :D

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

the girl is perfect.
not sure im falling as hard for the flannie/backpack combination though, too aussie suburban scene kid for me.

Blogger John-Bryan Hopkins said ... (12:28 PM) :

Cute

I like his jacket. The too short sleeves are just neat.

She is adorable !

Blogger sophia said ... (1:18 PM) :

Her outfit is much better than his mostly because he has a tacky backpack and shoes

Blogger Caroline said ... (1:52 PM) :

the shoe string belt is actually worn by a lot of younger guys now, my brother being one of them. He skateboards and claims that regular belts interfere with moving around on a skateboard and get super uncomfortable. that is where it originated pretty much. now every day guys realize that it is a lot lot more comfortable that leather belts!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

Thank You. What I appreciate most here are the matching sleeve lengths of their coats.

On the surface, and let's just theorize because I will never know them, two seemingly very different people - who for some reason are drawn together, be it for love, friendship, whatever. But they are trying to make two very different statements, hers is very classic, retro, vintage: but her scarf plays with that a little bit and makes it somewhat less classic.

His is very modern. In mens fashion I find there to be a very fine line between lumberjack/ construction worker and fashionable. Especially with the work boots and flannels that men are supposed to be wearing this season. However, because of his proportions, he walks that line beautifully. The fit of his jacket and his sleeve length makes the seemingly overt masculinity of the style almost feminine, but not to a fault.

Thus meshing their clashing looks, unifying aesthetics, and explaining to some degree why they were drawn together. All through sleeve length. Fashion worthy of documentation is always a product of some sort of subversion of expectation.

I also love to see something free of labels on Sart. Thanks again

i love this light on their faces.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (2:09 PM) :

Ordinary people. But they look coool!!

Blogger John Danner said ... (2:17 PM) :

I hate most sneakers/high tops and that whole movement, but I like these high top Asics. Weird.

Blogger Jackie said ... (3:39 PM) :

Haha, I went to NYU and they look like the prototypical undergrad standing outside of Tisch/Gallatin smoking or waiting for the bus. You should photograph there more often -- you'll get some creative (albeit not so high-end) shots that are emblematic of young, downtown NYC style. Right there on Broadway is the perfect spot.

Ah memories.

Blogger Z said ... (3:52 PM) :

These kids look like they're straight out of the Richmond Scene!

Love the Onitsuka Tigers he's wearing!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:53 PM) :

I like when you post younger people on here, it's a breath of fresh air.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:34 PM) :

Quintessential NYU/Downtown NYC style. Definitely photograph down here more often - you won't be sorry about what you find.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:42 PM) :

these two are a nice pair but there are much better dressed students at NYU.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:53 PM) :

string belt or shoelace belt? shoelace belts are an interesting but really common shakteboarding trend, more comfortable to skate in and skaters ALWAYS have extra shoelaces because they wear through their shoes so rapidly and always get extra pairs of laces with each pair of shoes..

great shot sart, i like seeing younger people on your blog.

sarah .

Blogger Min said ... (10:05 PM) :

good, but meh. I feel like most "alternative" kids my age (the 18-26 year old group) dress this way already.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:34 PM) :

my favorite thing from you mr. sart, how you have the kindest interest and appreciation on the little details...it's very inspiring! :)

Blogger jessica said ... (10:40 PM) :

they're not americans, are they?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:19 PM) :

I understand why you posted this picture. The texture, pattern and color are interesting. However, to me this really just hipsters dressing like hipsters. You know, wearing what stylish people were wearing 3 years ago.
If you like this look, come to the University of Oregon campus.Every fifth person has it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:19 AM) :

Nooooooooooooooo! Sooooo not fashion.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 AM) :

are you running out of stylish people to photograph??

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:22 AM) :

The two of them are just so cute! I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:39 AM) :

These two are different. That's for sure. And, there's something to be said about youth/street style as opposed to the more pulled-together look. But, this is pretty horrid.

Blogger ERman said ... (4:25 AM) :

plaid flannel shirt worn over a hoodie?? Gawd.. i should try that.

Blogger Maven said ... (5:13 AM) :

DANG! Well, he's nailed "the look", right down to using a shoelace for a belt, and a flannel over a hoodie. Wheres his board? This is EXACTLY what the skater dudes look like down here in Miami... including the swoopy doop of hair. Some of them cut the sleeves off the flannels, though. I sure do wish they weren't smoking-
Love her look- sweet!

Blogger padraic timothy sullivan said ... (5:36 AM) :

flannel over hoodie? how have i missed this before!

it's one of those brilliant sart moments when my existing wardrobe seems to double in size.

thank you sart.

Blogger mimoleskineyyo said ... (5:55 AM) :

I love these tiger shoes!!!

Blogger jessica said ... (7:52 AM) :

have to disagree with so many comments that this look is typical of downtown, particularly around NYU. really? i've not found much creativity down there recently...
i've actually been hoping that with the current economics, there will be some more interesting fashion on the street in NYC soon... i'm waiting... waiting....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:34 AM) :

Fucking boring! I can't decide what is more middle-class...Nu Rave meets puberty or monotony meets beggar style.

Blogger ricola said ... (9:54 AM) :

I love it. It reminds me of the colouring of birds, The bright male and the more monochromatic female. very nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:10 AM) :

Are they French ? I know this picture was taken in NYC but they really remind me of some students we have here. Even their face and hairstyle look very familiar to me.

Blogger Stephanie Clayton said ... (12:30 PM) :

cute, young, collegiate. her ensemble is very jcrew. the guy's shoes work well with the plaid shirt.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:46 PM) :

People in bigger cities will not be as impressed by this. for me this is average, since EVERY kid in San Francisco dresses like this. This is hipster uniform, not beautiful fashion.

Blogger Partymann's Way said ... (3:47 PM) :

HI MEREDITH!

i went to high school with that girl and can attest that she always had style beyond this world.

the accusations of "hipster uniform" are just as baseless as accusing the majority of sartorialist subjects as "yuppie uniform." the extension of her black sleeves beyond the coat parallels the almost waistless emergence of her black leggings out of the base of the coat - a balance framed perfectly by the matching brown of the coat and the shoes. and i know it's been discussed, but the pink ribbon is such a killer touch too. there's excellent composition to it all.

and, not to be redundant, but the shrunken-flannel-as-cardigan really does deserve mad props.

Blogger Robin said ... (6:13 PM) :

HI EVAN!

Shave your mustache. Awesome.

Blogger Nancy said ... (3:39 PM) :

he looks great! if i saw him walking down the block my head would turn :))

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:06 PM) :

I like the way the pattern and colors of his jacket/pack seem to have fallen through his skinny pants and spilled out onto his shoes. I also like the way her warmth and simplicity is the perfect compliment to his cool complexity, and their sly smiles suggest a shared secret with the photographer. They remind me of my own kids, who possess a similar brand of easy sophistication.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:33 AM) :

Such excellent kicks on the young man; someone with really good taste must have picked them out. I mean, maybe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:35 AM) :

He was a lot cuter before he had a moustache, but I do like the outfit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 AM) :

shoestring belt.. i love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 AM) :

Anyone know where I can get shoes in a similar style to hers?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:16 AM) :

i think the brown washes the girl's complexion out. nothing special, stylish, different about this at all. very boring. nothing makes this stand out, but on its own, all i can say is that she looks comfortable and warm.

the guy on the other hand looks friendly and fun :)

to be honest, im more curious about the person squatting behind this couple!

Blogger Hannah said ... (8:34 PM) :

Love their (especially his) look of bemused self-consciousness.

Anonymous the new yawka said ... (3:57 PM) :

They look adorable together. They're having fun and doing it on a thrift store budget - very stylish.
