Comments on "On the Street.... Except for the Cellphone..., Milan"
Yes, especially the guy to the right feels very 1963. Quite Beatles-esque actually. The glasses, the "moptop" the turtleneck and the tight jacket make the look.
yawn...
love the glasses
i'm imagining that it's a new-fangled electric razor in the guy's hand, and the other guy's pocket as well i think so that it can be 1963 in this picture... i have to believe this because i will never be brave or cool enough to wear those lapels, etc. Holy crap the dude left-center looks GREAT.
I wish I could see the details of his hat in his left hand.
They look too feminine.
i love this look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i want to be like them!jejeje
Love the way those oversized wayfarers complement their outfits.
Love this photo! It speaks volumes. The gentleman facing the camera looks so, so cool, he is immaculately dressed. He could only be Italian.
[Hope this photo doesn't prompt a barrage of boring anti-cigarette comments. i don't smoke, i don't like smoking but i defend peoples' right to give themselves bad breath and hideous diseases if they want to.]
I LOVE this outfit. I wear things like this on a daily bases, all I need is to start smoking! Haha.
Great job! :D
fabulous.
How charming!
Except for the cellphone is right, otherwise he looks great. Everything here suits his look and his attitude very well. If only he'd known...
Wow, everything old IS new again. Two questions - Is the murse "in", or is he holding for a lady friend?
And isn't the purpose of slimmer and smaller electronic devices avoidance of that unsightly pocket distortion?
-Capt. Mike
Wow, I love that look on guys! The Sunglasses and the suit makes them look so classy and gentlemen like. Really nice!
Perfect! Absolutely impeccable.
is that a ribbon tie?! perfect.
The boys watch the girls while the girls watch the boys who watch the girls go by
Eye to eye, they solemnly convene to make the scene
Which is the name of the game, watch a guy watch a dame on any street in town
Up and down and over and across, romance is boss
Guys talk "girl talk", it happens everywhere
Eyes watch girls walk with tender lovin' care
I adore Italian guys and their style and this just confirms it. One word: Lovely
I love Italian men after my last visit to Milan, but this picture made me love them even more!
I like the way he holds his cigarette and his hair.
I also like the glasses and the turtleneck of the guy in the front.
Viva Italia...
I forgot the tell that I love the way he purchess his lips.
Nice detail...
make it black and white and it IS Rome 1963.
I like it. :)
Crisp and sexy! In any time period, this would be a stunning ensemble, but for the new millenium, I think this faux beatnick reinvention is perfect. I can not get over those gold bracelets.
I love it, it looks right out of a movie!
Man has clutch bag?
lovely
Super cool!
Yes, upon seeing this, I was about to say "this is totally Mod~"
I think they look more Diana Ross than Beatle.
How fantastic, i love this picture, you can see that a moment was captured, but most of all i love their shades.
Besides their amzin choose of clothes and glasses, also take a look of hòw he smokes and how he shows his attitude by bodylanguage.
Left guys haircut inspires me
Also very chic to see these stylish Milanese guys together.
I wonder where they are going for lunch!
The pale blue slacks are wonderful!
They look incredibly affected and self-conscious. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm just pointing it out. I would also say that this kind of affectation is more culturally acceptable in Europe. North Americans have more of a taste for the "natural".
It's funny how most of people still have a positive and admired vision of italian men and sense of fashion. Thank you all, but, really, I'm italian and here there's a spread lack of style, originality and elegance. We are really boring about fashion than most of other countries (in and out Europe).
Amazing. Very cool. Bravo!
Salut,
absolutly, Mr. Schuman! Roma or some other italian city.... Remember the film "The talented Mr. Ripley"? Hearing the sound of the song "Tu vou fa l`americano". Great! Looking like a Dandy...... Thats me! Hello! Thats me!!! ;-)
Jèrôme
What a great shot!
This photo makes you want to listen in on their conversation.
It looks like Fellini´s Dolce Vita.
LOVE IT
wish i looked as good as he does in white pants.
I´m SO jealous.
but still. LOVE IT:=)
impeccable...love their shades!
Yes! who is playing Fellini? who is playing Pasolini? Godard?
Like this lots I love the trim on the man that is facing the cameras jacket.
I can only agree with Suzanne Nelson's comments near the top of the responses. They both olok great!
Blue? They look like a crisp white. Cool to be square.
yawn
What a perfectly beautiful specimen of a man...
black velvet blazer...amazing!!
I've always wished I had the supreme confidence to pull off a look like this---not necessarily this look (although I do love it) but something like this that takes some boldness.
i adore this photo
such class
Love their looks, they look like they came out of a movie set..
Lovely!
love that guy's hair.
i love it! classic!
a man with great style is a man i adore [x]
This is amazing, the guy on the left is so great.
Love it, awesome photo.
Great shot Sart...and a very apt comment to boot. I love seeing shots like this that are very timeless. Could be 1963, definitely is this century. That said, the fellow on the left is sporting a hairstyle that is VERY much early 1960s Italian/French/Continental - the rock & rollers in "La Dolce Vita" come to mind. Nice.
I love the jacket the man on the left is wearing, and his white trousers are lovely too! I also want his sunglasses...
Love this portrait-- all those great sunglasses... Such a modern take on the La Dolce Vita sensibility.
PLO
Too cool for school :)
wonder what their shoes look like
Sure it does... when smoking wasn't so déclassé.
First: To everybody who said, 'yawn:' could you possibly be any more disrespectful? Despite the fact that the technological era seems to have recast all art (blogs being an obvious and decidedly post-post-modern example, as public property) it is still art. Therefore, show a little respect when you're commenting on somebody's work, for crying out loud.
Second: I don't think this look is boring at all. It's classy, it's classic, and it's well-played. You can't go wrong with clean, cool, and collected.
This is one of the RARE times I like what your men are wearing. Being from rural Iowa and now in DC it's one of the fews looks I brought with me.
absolutely stunning.
i love his pose
what a great picture! the guys just give off a "cool" vibe.
These guys look so cool, I'd love to dress like this everyday.
Not sure though, should white trousers be only worn in summer / spring.
...step back in time...I love it...retro is always the best...
i love it
Wow, those guys look very cool, Nice pic.
I hate to be so pc but all I could see was the ciggy.
well, that and a totally affected "look".
That guy looks like a young Patrick Dempsey. Yum.
Yeah, 'stylish,' but way too femme.
I can't begin to imagine how many times the word "fabulous" or "fierce" came up in this conversation. They should be a judging panel on some sort of fashion reality show.
Love the glasses on both of the men closer to the camera. Very chic. love the look of the jacket, but no so much the actual jacket. While I'm not a fan of white pants.... the look pulls together for these two. Could do without the ultra-feminine hand gestures (I've never thought that looks sophisticated but just rather feminine).
this blog is inspiring!!!
reminds me of that Will Ferrel skit on SNL with the mini cell phones you can barely see."Meet you in Milan in an hour!"
love, love the sunglasses on all three of them! also can't ignore the jacket/ white trousers combination on the left, it is excellent!
It looks like a Fellini movie. Very cool! The cell phone could be erased from the photo, but he has such a cool way of holding the phone and cigarette in the same hand!
What make are the black sunglasses? where can i get them ?
They're acting out a Rufus Wainright song.
I love the look of these three young men. so natural, so classy, so together.
But what I love more, is your ability to catch people being themselves. Not posed, not pretending - these images are the reason why I've been returning to your blog for well over a year.
thank you for inspiring me and delighting me
I thought you meant they were like a mirror reflection of each other, except for the cellphone, until I scrolled down. I think it still applies tho.
LOVE it, i like the femininity, the slim silhouettes, and the hair :P it helps that the man facing is so handsome
oh and the sunglasses are the prada version of the wayfarer...
Love the way they're carrying themselves... and great sunglasses!
If they are Italian they wouldn't say fabulous or fierce.
S
this is how i dress right now, however after seeing this pic i think im gonna stop or change it up.
This is not new. Or innovative. It maintains some kind of ready wear ready to sleep aesthetic.
i love it except the cell phone
too girlie to be 1963
Beautiful photo, beautiful men. They seem cool & aloof, almost unapproachable- which makes them somehow very appealing.
i mean what man
and i say man carries a clutch bag, and what sort of person thinks this is cool !!! these guys walked into my local they would get called wankers straight up
wow perfect!! =D I love it!
that's not a cell phone.
Good phone/cigarette technique there boys.
absolutely! ^-^
Beautiful shooting! I totally agree, this looks like out of the machine time...shame that he has a cellphone...is like the rolex on cleopatra!
L O V I N G the young gentleman in the velvet smoking jacket !!!
Amazing picture. Love the style. Actualy I will be going to Milan next weekend. Just a short stop, saturday night/sunday morning through afternoon, but I would like to check out some fashion and maybe acquire some new pieces. Any tips you guys would give me for places that I should definitely pay a visit to? (manswear :))
i really love this photo! ^^
the only thing i don't like is the ring on his finger...?! haha
Oh, Marcello! Where've you been!?
gorgeous :~
Marcello Mastroianni was asked by an interviewer, "What is 'la dolce vita'?" He replied "To eat, to work, to smoke."
Nonsmokers(and I have been one for life) do not 'get' what a pleasure this is.
Great shot, makes me look and look!
In my imagination I can hear them braying in an English Public School kind of voice. "I say, haw haw haw What-o, old chum"
god, the romans are so chic.
LOVE IT<3
he looks like Valentino around the period
hello handsome
I'm shocked that someone could say "yawn" to this one....this man is FABULOUS!!!! Perfect poise, perfect hair, great glasses, and that jacket! White pants...men need to wear more white pants.
Love this shot!!!
Oh, I wish my boyfriend would see this! We'll be trying to re-invent his style when he gets back on christmas break, but it's a little hard since he has very little idea of what he likes. Perhaps these guys could pull him in a good direction...
Twenty-First Century Paninaro!
Loving it! The guy with the cig looks slick!
FIERCE!!!
Jean-Paul Belmondo
impeccable.
impeccable.
Lovely shot Sart!
«Marcello, come here!»
Daniele, Naples
"Gigi, what IS that you're waving at my face?"
"It's my new 'mobile' from the FUTURE."
"Can you smoke it?"
Perfect! I just LOVE this outfit!
I love it. The light blue pants are fantastic! I want this for my boyfriend...
loves it.
amazing shot, too.
YES YES YES, this photo is fantastic, what a capture
i want them oversized wayfarers nowwww!!!
I love this shot! Like stated above, it makes me want to see "The talented Mr Ripley" again!
am i the only one who thinks he looks way too much groomed and in love with himself?
and white pants!!!my god, white pants!!is there anything more tacky than that??
I love it!oh my god they're so chic!I love milan..
this shot is out of a movie-- beautiful, scott!
sc.
EW..smarmy and overdone and too fey.
Very cool, I agree.
BUENA VIDA
I haven't bothered to read all the comments but..
My goodness I'm reminded of chuck bass by looking at the man nearest to the front.
careless sophistication
Absolutely fabulous !
" Anonymous said...
They're acting out a Rufus Wainright song."
The song is "Poses" and you are 100% correct
Wow,
I must buy white pants/a ribbon tie to go with my tux jacket and oversized dior homme sunnies. sleeeek.
But what shoes to wear, hmmmmm?
Btw, It's not the guy on the left holding the LV bag, its the woman behind him, his hand and the bag line up perectly creating the illusion.
Rhys
Great silhouettes, but a bit too precious in the details. I would remove the ribbon tie, open the jacket, and muss the hair a bit.
The gold bracelets look perfect... along with everything else.
Great jacket. The whole look is slightly undermined by the pompness. Life's not a commercial!
He looks like a waiter from the 60's... but what I really can't get past is his mouth. What perfect lips this boy has!!
definitely lovely:0)
I adore that photo... Whoever took it, really caught the moment.
The men had to be Italian, just look at the immaculate outfits they're wearing, and the GORGEOUS sunglasses!
Lovely, definately 1963.
He looks like the ocean's 11 french guy who steals paintings
Re: mentalia 4.59pm
whoever took it?
why sart of course!
HIT ME
I love all of your photos from Italy the best, particularly that of the men. The way that they dress is just as powerful as the French woman in Chanel or what Ralph Lauren romanticizes as being quintessentially American. They give men a style and an authority that is otherwise lacking, as if fashion is an art for BOTH sexes to participate in; they illustrate that there ARE options for men other than J. Crew, what most Americans perceive to be the higher evolved man from T-shirt and football jersey. I implore you to take as many photographs of Italian MEN as you can - perhaps even start a side blog, even seasonal, dedicated to Italian men only. May I propose The Sartorialist Italia?
this is so fantastic. the shades - especially the brown rimmed ones on the right hand guy - are SO perfect with the black outfits. bravissima.
he has a feline quality
amasing confidance......no fashion is complete with out it..!
very Dolce Vita.
Oh my gosh so gorgeous !!!
This look works well, though I can't help but agree with previous comments that this look is slightly effeminate.
Though it could be argued that it isn't so much the gaping lapels and ostentatious bow that is dare-I-say effeminate, yet his posture.
Thoughts?
The Murse is completely acceptable for men of gay or straight orientation in Italy. I love this photo, it remind me of Marcello Mastroianni. Why don't you ever shoot in Rome? I would love to see the young style of Rome up here. It's fantastic!
This is guy really exists? Is he single?
Great Picture! does anybody know what kind of glasses the tortoise-coloured ones are? they are brilliant!
how hot are they!?
tooo femenine!!!!
I always wonder if men like this really exist.
WOW!
This guy is GENIUS!
o molto molto dandy !!!! questi boys fanno molto Dolce Vita !!!!! o D'Annunzio come vedi non è cambiato niente !!!!o mio Oscar nuovi sspiriti eletti !!!!!
I WANT HIM!
