Hey Sart,

Read your interview on todays paper. I find it amazing that you came here with an open mind and willing to see beyond the cliches and stereotypes. This is a city (and a country) of multiculturalism, multi-ethinicity and diversity, and I hope you are fortunate enough to see that and to capture that atmosphere in your pictures.

You said you want to find differente things, more than just the "tanned golden skinned beach wear" cliche. You said you hope to see a romantic and intellectual side of the city. We have that too. It would probably please you to walk through the artsy neighbourhood of Gavea, for example. This neighbourhood is not by the beach, and it has a bohemian atmosphere that you might enjoy. Go to Jardim Botanico and Parque Lage. The latter specially is all about arts and romance. The palace inside, where a very traditional art school is stablished, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Once in Leblon, when you´re done with the beach, go to Dias Ferreira, a street that will probably remind you of NY´s Soho, with amazing hidden shops, great restaurants and charming bookstores. Dont miss the cute art deco building with the black and white entrance at the street´s very end, right next to a bookstore named Letras e Expressões. Turn your right, you´ll be at Ataulfo de Paiva, the neighbourhood´s main street. On the other side, you have Visconde de Albuquerque, a very romantic Parisian-style residential street, where you´ll find some of the most beautiful (and expensive) apartaments and houses on the city.

If you have the time, have dinner at a restaurant named Miam Miam. You´ll find and interesting, hip, artsy crowd there, surrounded by a very unique decor setting. Copa Cafe, Zuka, Carlota, Al Mare and Quadrucci may also please your taste.

Nice smile, anyway.

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (7:53 AM) :

Love his shades and his necklace looks cool too. I like those linen shirts, although I like mine to look like I pressed them, and then they got rumpled. It looks like he paired it with surf shorts, which I always understood were a no-no in Brasil, as people wear speedos? Jorge from W Palm Beach

Sart, you are clearly an experienced traveller - will you share any of your sartorial secrets? What do you consider essential travelling clothes? Do you travel light or take 14 pieces of matching Louis Vuitton luggage wherever you go? Enjoy Rio!

Blogger Leila said ... (11:02 AM) :

What a great-looking carioca!! I grew up in brazil, and spent most of my summers there! You HAVE to go to the Jardim Botanico, Parque lo Lage, which is an art university, but they have a cozy cafe! You'll love that place! Its a MUST see, and many people don't know about it...its not crowded at all!!
Enjoy Rio, have a lot of natural juices, hope you don't get too many rainy days, and go to carioca da gema na Lapa to listen to some REAL samba!!

he looks so comfortable. Very casual, but with style. Nice.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:25 PM) :

If you want to check some cool shops, go to Contemporaneo (Visconde de Piraja, Ipanema) and Dona Coisa (Jardim Botanico). On both shops you´ll find some of the trendiest and edgiest work from some of the most interesting and inovative brazillian designers. You should also go to Totem (this one you´ll find in Ipanema, Shopping da Gavea, Shopping Leblon) for fabulous prints. Isabela Capeto (Dias Ferreira) has been the "IT" designer for a few years now. Her work is very feminine, although a bit overpriced. LeeLoo, Maria Bonita Extra, Sacada, Maria Filo, Luko and Mara Mac are other shops that might be worth a visit. Farm is the biggest commercial phenomenom brazillian fashion has seen in years.

Blogger simone said ... (12:41 PM) :

amazing tips from anonymous, even to brazilians...thank you!!

Blogger cami falcão said ... (12:42 PM) :

Blogger Bedlam said ... (12:53 PM) :

nice look, got that u2 look about him, uh he couldn't do down one more button.

Blogger Fernanda said ... (12:53 PM) :

I'm so proud you're here, in Rio!

I agree with all the hints posted by anonymous at 7:21 am. You'll find a carioca soulful style mostly at Zona Sul (Leblon, Ipanema, Gávea, Lagoa, Jardim Botânico, Copa, etc.). I would also add to the list a neibourhood called Santa Teresa, you have to take an extremely old (yet very charming) monorail at Lapa. Santa Teresa is the most artsy neibourhood, it's where many artists set their workshops and it's got typical northeastern food (Bar do Arnaudo is an excelent choice). Once you're there, be sure to visit "Parque das Ruínas", where you'll have a breathtakingly different view of the city, with favelas mixed up to the landscape and to the expensive buildings.

If you have the time to cross the bridge to Niterói, try to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), with it's architecture by Oscar Niemeyer and where i think is the best view you can get of Rio, of all places.

Miam Miam is definitely a great restaurante to check out, with the confort food, beautiful people and vintage furniture.

Also, even this being a cliché kind of hint, if you're here on sunday, go take some pictures of the healthy shiny people exercising on the beach sidewalk and on the part of the road that closes just so that we can enjoy our (hopefully) sunny sundays..

Anyways, whatever you do, just have a nice time here, be careful with your camera and money and i hope you have a good one and come back some other time.

Please post lots and lots of carioca pics! Can't wait to see my city style through your eyes! :)

Blogger Somnia Carvalho said ... (1:57 PM) :

He looks great and confortable. But if you didn´t had write that was in Rio I could not notice this just looking the picture. Many guys in Brazil looks or very relax or more "conservative". This one is very very beautiful!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:13 PM) :

Someone forgot to mention you have to visit a neighbourhood named Santa Tereza, the true artsy place in Rio. Painters and musicians live there and you can find great restaurants and bars. And check out the night life in Lapa, fridays and saturdays, near by Fundição Progresso and Circo Voador. Cool people will certainly be around. Also at Lapa, a place tipically for cariocas but "gringos" usually like is the Rio Scenarium, which mixes brazilian music and dancing.
Enjoy!

Blogger Ms. Katee/e-polishblog said ... (3:15 PM) :

I think he looks totally hot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:21 PM) :

I agree with ALL the hints given before by anonymous and Fernanda and add a few more:
- if you decide to visit Parque Lage, prefer to go in the morning and have a brunch there. It's fabulous!
- Try the restaurant Aprazivel in Santa Teresa. It is SO charming, the food is delicious, the decoration is SO brazilian and the view makes you breathless!
- Usually people say that you'll find great looks just in Leblon or Ipanema. But please, try to go to the downtown at lunch time in the neighborhood of Rua da Quitanda and Rua 7 de setembro. I'm sure it's worth for the variety of looks!

I could spend hours just advicing you on what to do in Rio, but since the guys gave you so many good hints, I'll limit myself to these 3! :-)

Hope to see you around!

Betina

Blogger junglesiren said ... (5:25 PM) :

Oh MY. Major hotty. And I dig his style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:27 PM) :

His body looks like it's waaaay too long for his legs. He should pull those trousers up.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:44 PM) :

I like the look overall but for some reason I don't quite "get" the pants. I can't tell if they're riding really low or if the shirt is untucked over them. And I don't quite like their width. The way the pants seem to be hanging there so low feels awkward to me. Sorry, I think the overall first impression is great, but just kind of the way his body is cut bugs me a bit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:31 PM) :

i'm quite happy to know that you're in Brazil!!!
i'm not a carioca, but i think that Rio can reflect exactly the soul of our country... Rio is just gorgeous and joyful...
have you ever visit Bahia? it's very beautiful too...
i hope you enjoy Brazil!!
