Comments on "When First We Met....(part 2)"

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:33 AM) :

the beard is rockin' and the rolled up sleeves are hot!

wouldn't have taken a second look at him two years ago. now, he's rugged, manly and handsome!

Blogger laurel said ... (11:36 AM) :

i'd have to say that everything about the bottom one is amazing, the glasses, the beard, the super rolled up sleeves, and those incredible pink shoes. love love love it

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:38 AM) :

What a 180! I think both looks are great, but I sort of prefer the militant casual look he sports now (love them pink shoes, too). And I must say I admit to an extreme case of bear envy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

um, the new pics are smokin hot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:41 AM) :

Looks like a superhero in picture 3!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:43 AM) :

Wow! That last look is so Steampunk Lawyer he ought to be running for office. Candidates, take notice:)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

He looks MUCH older with the big beard. He looks a lot more p*ssed off in the lower pics too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 AM) :

I love the last outfit! I can not help to ask, is that Terrell Owens in the background to the left?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 AM) :

You sure this is the same guy?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:53 AM) :

impressive, indeed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:57 AM) :

oh wow, what a man!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:59 AM) :

That is quite a transformation. I love the rolled up sleeves and the beard. Such a great combination of formal and informal wear. Side note, is it just me or is that Terrell Owens in the white T shirt in the left background of the bottom pic??? Has Terrell been Sartorialized?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 PM) :

Great character, love the bottom one with the rolled up sleeves and tie

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:02 PM) :

so cool! I love that people can change their entire look and still keep their good sense of style.

Blogger Agost said ... (12:06 PM) :

i'm in love with the roled up sleeves

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:08 PM) :

Oh, the overgrown beard ages him so greatly...unfortunate. His new look is definitely edgier, but a bit over the top, I'd say. Tatoos are passe.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 PM) :

The pictures are from different seasons--they really shouldn't be judged one from the other.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

I think I just fell in love with that beard, glasses and vest combination.

Blogger Gabrielle said ... (12:20 PM) :

My god - that is incredible. I love the way people can change so very dramatically. It's unusual to find a guy who looks so good in a classical suit and yet also looks comfortable in 'rough and ready' getup, too.

Both looks are delicious, but I am swaying towards the pumped-up look of the last two. What a sexy guy. If I saw that coming down the street towards me... arugh!! *shiver shiver* Yum!!

Blogger Keisha Kornbread said ... (12:21 PM) :

WOW!

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (12:21 PM) :

He does the rolled sleeve with dash!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:26 PM) :

First off, that is totally Terrell Owens in the back. Secondly, it is great to get to see the evolution of someone's personal style like this. Someone who gave himself over to his fashion instincts and allowed his personal style to develop. Bravo to him and to you Sart!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:26 PM) :

Maybe he is on vacations, or just finished a bad relationship and needed to change things in his life.

Blogger beatriz la luna said ... (12:28 PM) :

pink shoes!!!

Blogger Andy said ... (12:29 PM) :

He looks 15 years older with the beard. He looks handsome without it. With it is more of a bad ass look. Which I dig. Interesting carryover of accessories between the two vastly different beard looks: chains, horseshoe belt buckle, beads, the central vest. What does he do for a living?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:34 PM) :

thats Kevin Stewart!

Blogger Miss Cavendish said ... (12:35 PM) :

The rolled-up sleeves are super sexy with the vest!!

Blogger Audreaming said ... (12:37 PM) :

I actually love every look this guy has. when i turned to your page i thought the feature picture was the shot 2 years ago. but then he just got better and better. love the belt buckle, and especially his tribal inspired metal necklace.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:41 PM) :

Holy hotness - in the last pic. Lookit those arms!

Blogger Will Anderson said ... (12:42 PM) :

What I love is that you can just look at the pictures and feel the confidence that he exudes. Great looks.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:47 PM) :

Suddenly my beard is not long enough. Thanks Sart for giving inspiration for not just our clothes, but our faces too. Awesome.

Blogger Matthew said ... (12:49 PM) :

ahahaha! The 3rd photo is the greatest thing I have ever seen!

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:50 PM) :

Ouch, what happened in the second picture? He looks like someone who needs mental help..

The third picture, in contrast, looks amazing. Like a super hardcore marxist intellectual.

Blogger joanna said ... (12:53 PM) :

Wow I can hardly stop staring at this man.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:55 PM) :

i saw this picture up on men.style.com a couple of weeks ago and thought i was crazy because i thought it was TO in the background too! it's funny that he made such a drastic change because i went totally the other way- from huge ass militant bush and combat boots to tailored blazers, selvedge denim and bench-made shoes. those last pictures make me think about doing it again though...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 PM) :

Cool...and Terrell Owens in the left of frame (white tee) is noticing his style also!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:59 PM) :

The bottom picture is astounding. He's created an Afro-prep-funk-safari fusion unlike anything I've ever seen. And if my arms looked like that, I'd never unroll my sleeves!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:01 PM) :

Wahou, he looks older now.....! We can barely see his eyes and his new look just scares me !!!!!

He was so lovely 2 years ago...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:23 PM) :

i'm so.... confused.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:41 PM) :

he looks great in all 3. boy has he changed. wonder if his life has too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 PM) :

the second look is actually kind of scary. it's uncomfortable. and it honestly makes me wonder what happened to make this person change how they look so dramatically.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 PM) :

I love the fact that The Sartorialist has a strong ESPN fan following as well. Glad we settled the fact that T.O. has officially made it on "The List"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:48 PM) :

Sart is on a roll!!! First, the perfection of Milan Vukmirovic. Now this gentleman! The after pics are ferocious (the before pic is very bland, paint-by-numbers dressing)... What I love is that both these men infuse their own very own distinct sense of style into what is essentially classic men's fashion. Both men have a strong, masculine, and irreverent sense of style that only enhances their being. Perfection.

To the poster who said tattoos are "so over": Not for those of us who have inscribed importance and relevance in our tattoos-- and not wear them as a fashion accessory.

--PLO

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:48 PM) :

from snooze can-he-be-any-more-boring to suited-up vengeance...i love this man's transformation & the severe panache of his grey beard.

Blogger Lisa said ... (1:49 PM) :

I love how both looks are so different; he's definitely unafraid of taking risks.

Blogger Bob Lob Law said ... (2:06 PM) :

this guy is the business!
Love the shirt sleaves. x

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:06 PM) :

How fitting is it that the woman behind him in the photo where he's wearing the camo pants, is wearing an Obama shirt saying 'CHANGE'? Superb photo, Scott.

And yeah, it's Terrell Owens in the transformation #2 photo.

Blogger MaryaM said ... (2:06 PM) :

jesus christ that guy is tough as f*ck.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:11 PM) :

life has hardened him. or maybe it was the tattoos and suddenly you have a damn it all attitude. or maybe he's pissed because he looks so good. still, it could just be the sun in his eyes.

Blogger Berkley Magazine said ... (2:22 PM) :

Looking amazing today imitating the power of Morpheus. Such individuality, such style. Superb transformation.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:22 PM) :

Im gonna go buy that outfit right now. hahah DIGG!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:22 PM) :

This is what I love about NYC, a brotha can do his thang! Great pix once again! And I agree that has to be Terrel Owens in the background?

Blogger gluttonforlife said ... (2:23 PM) :

Who IS this arresting individual? He is so uniquely charismatic, so coolly capable of mixing influences--part pirate, part gentleman, part Annie Hall--into a truly personal style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:23 PM) :

Love the new look. The pink shoes! But what happened to his smile?

Blogger Miguel said ... (2:24 PM) :

The botton picture is defenitly a great one, the style, the confidence the galsses, the beard the loo in all.... I also ejoy the first picture, it is superb conbination ang great look. The one in the midle I am not so sure!

Good work.

Blogger rosemary x said ... (2:26 PM) :

amazing...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:29 PM) :

Top one: younger, softer, sweeter

Bottom two: older, harder, wiser.

Amazing what a transformation a few key elements can make. It would be interesting to hear what has been going on with this gentleman in the past two years. His style seems to be an outward manifestation of inner changes. A tale told through clothes, accesories and the like.

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (2:31 PM) :

I dont think it is so much the beard that ages him but he seems to have lost some fat on his face (notice cheekbones). Although I am WAY over cargo pants, I think pictures 2 and 3 show how this gent can take basics (such as the chino vest, JCREW? and a dress shirt and tie) and pair them with completely unexpected items, such as the pink shoes (love) and the unique buckle. Have to say, I LOVE the woman in the background with the change t-shirt, and not for political reasons- perfect proportions and great sunglasses! Jorge from W Palm Beach

Blogger Bang Bang Starz said ... (2:32 PM) :

woww what a change!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

I think he went crazy

Blogger jessicawhitley said ... (2:36 PM) :

I loove the rolled-up sleeves in the last picture.
And in the second to last I love the lime green hat, nice :)
Anddd I really do like the first picture as well. How many men do you seen in an olive green suit?

:)

- Whitley

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:37 PM) :

Here's the deal: the first pic is a polished look. Very clean, well groomed style, but can easily fade into the background like everyone eles. The second and third pics look like he's found his true character, or has gone through a change where he's developed into the person that's been there and now can speak for himself.
Beards add character, age, & wisdom (even if you think it).
He now commands attention with his new look, (more so in the third in a respectable way).
I suggest everyone try a new look for one day and step out of our regular shoes. Be it with small details, or a complete outfit.

Blogger Jess said ... (2:37 PM) :

Pink shoes!

Rolled up sleeves!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:46 PM) :

Am I the only one who prefers the first look?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:00 PM) :

Unbelievably awesome. Like the man featured earlier this week, this man clearly thinks about his presentation and has no fear of change or reinvention of self. Speaking of change, an aside--the woman in the background of the 2nd picture is wearing the "Change" shirt which is growing increasingly ubiquitous in my city...very interesting!

Blogger The Obenson Report said ... (3:03 PM) :

The very bottom pic - super bold! I'm inspired!

Blogger O!Lightning said ... (3:06 PM) :

lovin it!

Bravo for fearless fullfillment of a thought. Plus, PINK SHOES!!

This man has serious sex apeal.

Blogger cat minoki said ... (3:11 PM) :

The pink shoes kick ass!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:13 PM) :

I like him better with the beard. More character. But what I really want to know is if that is Terrell Owens in the background on the lefthand side of the last picture? Just curious.

Blogger The Obenson Report said ... (3:14 PM) :

By the way, the fellow on the left of the last picture, wearing a white tee-shirt and blue jeans, looks just like Terrell Owens!

Blogger Jamie Welsh Watson said ... (3:29 PM) :

Dayum, what an awesome transformation. Very sexy and strong. Kind of blew me away.

Blogger eye five style said ... (3:49 PM) :

Is that Terrel Owens in the background of the bottom pic?

Blogger Deanna said ... (4:03 PM) :

I'm in the minority, i guess - i think he looks more attractive in the first picture. Less edgy, but also younger and less angry.

How did you even realise this was the same guy? Between the dramatically bushy beard and the tattoos (which i never would have guessed were under that tweed jacket), i never would have recognized him!

Blogger Jonathan said ... (4:04 PM) :

Digging the beard and the pink wing tips. What what really impresses me is his body language in the third photo. A completely different presence than the first photo from two years ago.

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:05 PM) :

What a huge transformation! I really like the last picture. However, he looks older with the beard. He actually looks like a completely different person!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:14 PM) :

That's quite an extreme change! I love his new look, but it almost makes me wonder what life event pushed him towards this more militant style...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:21 PM) :

Those pink shoes rocks.
/Ghost

Blogger NorthShore Chicago said ... (4:29 PM) :

What's his Superhero name?

Blogger Kasey said ... (4:39 PM) :

Can we ship the two years ago version to me?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:40 PM) :

Wow, incredible. I love how he rocks both.

Blogger Clarence Lexington said ... (5:12 PM) :

Both looks are perfection! The first picture is so perfect though, I can't help but favor that one. But I am definitely a fan of the top and bottom pics!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:26 PM) :

Wow he aged a lot in two years..
but I like the fits...

and i think that is terrell owens in the last picture..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:31 PM) :

Maybe the schizophrenia kicked in.
Which is a good thing, for he was bland before.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:33 PM) :

Is that Terrell Owens in the white shirt and blue jeans in the background?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:34 PM) :

wow! I'm loving the before/after pictures! He looks cool but I still love his before look though, I must admit!

Blogger Zander said ... (5:40 PM) :

He looks stylish in both, but he looks so harsh now. Maybe it is because he is smiling in the old one, but the sense of character is different.

I suppose that only illustrates how important your personal style is to how you are perceived.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:41 PM) :

closet gay finally embracing his orientation.

i love the rolled sleeves, beard and glasses.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:44 PM) :

HOT HOT HOT!!!

Now THAT is a man. Mmmmmmmmm....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:21 PM) :

i really dont think that they are the same man. He looks so much older in the bottom 2 than the first pic...i seriously dont think its him

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:38 PM) :

Quite a transformation...he lost a so much weight and became so hard looking. He no longer has warmth and softness.

Blogger Regina said ... (6:44 PM) :

I just loved the 1st and the last looks.
Specially the beard.

Blogger ryder said ... (6:50 PM) :

my favorite When First We Met. please keep this theme up if you can!

Blogger Rachella said ... (6:53 PM) :

I like everything EXCEPT the beard. I guess I spend too much time in Stamford Hill.

Blogger erin nuts said ... (7:37 PM) :

No way!! He barely looks like the same guy! And yet he has wonderful style in both...that is what I call multi-talented. And I ADORE that last look, can't even get over it

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:56 PM) :

He's definitely trying to look tough, but those soft eyes give it away.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:58 PM) :

Killer! On the new photo that's saying something too because the 2 guys behind him look purty darn good too. Day-um!

Blogger Karen said ... (8:02 PM) :

Actually, I like the first one best. Very understated, though it needs something -- not sure what.

Picture number two -- um... no. Just... no.

Picture number three -- much better than picture number two. The pink shoes do nothing for me. With those cargo pants I'd almost rather see an open collar than the very uptight upright collar and tie. Or better still, the same shirt with pants that have no cargo pockets. But I very much like the colors, and the dark navy tie against the lighter hues.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 PM) :

Imagine! - d.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:53 PM) :

I highly doubt that is TO in the backround...the guy pictured has some minor gut going. I love the pics, but I need some context for the whole before/after...are these folks all models?

Blogger GZ said ... (10:19 PM) :

He looks amazing, but those cargo pants are poking my eyes out, as are the pink shoes (nothing wrong with them, but they certainly don't suit those pants).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:49 PM) :

it is really cruel to post such a transformation and not let us in on the catalyst.

I am dieing to know what happened to him...it had better be something intense like we all expect

i hope that this is not just a costume

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:02 PM) :

I guess I'm in the minority here, but...his style didn't develop, it devolved.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:02 PM) :

perfection.

Please continue this theme.."when we first met" my fav satorialist post!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:06 PM) :

did anyone notice the gold necklace in the 2nd pic?
BOSSSSSSSS!!

Blogger thwany said ... (11:43 PM) :

i think he looks great now. there's nothing sexier than a guy with his own personal style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 AM) :

i don't think this guy is "trying" to look tough. you can usually tell/sense when someone is "trying" too hard. and this, apparently, comes natural to him. i, too would like to know what happened in his life for such a change...a "tough" change (which it is)...especially this BIG in only a 2 year period, it must have been profound. however, he still is fashion-inspiring whatever the catalyst was.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:43 AM) :

I must say i'm very impressed with Sart's organisational skills! (besides loving the b/a shots obv.) How do you keep your files so that you can easily find these pics from 2 years ago?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:13 AM) :

If your arms look that good, you can wear anything you want. In fact, you should. I love the forceful stride that accompanies the second two. The first photo has its qualities, but the second two are really adventurous. The pink shoes with camo and a lawyers shirt and tie... the bronze necklace with a John Deere cap... This guy seems funny and extremely intelligent. And, of course, sexy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:03 AM) :

this guys is such a badass. he looks villainous. i'm thoroughly impressed. he needs to be in movies.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:42 AM) :

Drastically different. It's quite a transformation. He can really rock a beard.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:11 AM) :

Love love love love!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:16 AM) :

he seems nice and talkable two years ago. now he seems scary. in the last two pics, his pose is saying - BACK OFF.

Blogger ryder said ... (5:57 AM) :

this man is great. who is he? i specaily love the photo n3. why? i like that is capture when he was in a pace, and i love llove love his outfit.

Blogger Oli said ... (6:08 AM) :

Amazing, really

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:18 AM) :

Though I'd generally go for the look in picture one.. am totally wowed by the third.
The Woman at the back of picture 2 sums it up perfectly!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:43 AM) :

Beautiful hacking jacket in pic No.1, and the rest of the outfit isn't bad either (except for the specs).

Pics 2 & 3, dear God what a mess. I'm trying to decide which is the worst: the combat trousers? the trucker cap? cargo pants? pink shoes? the beard you could lose a badger in?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:12 AM) :

I prefer his two-years-ago look. He looks intelligent and approachable there.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:29 AM) :

I love when you make these posts. I love to see the change of style, more of this!

Blogger Unknown said ... (8:38 AM) :

This is Kevin Stewart and he has worked in fashion for many years as a stylist and fashion editor for major magazines. He's ALWAYS been stylish and inventive and intense.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:22 AM) :

pink shoes with khaki is inspired

Blogger V said ... (9:36 AM) :

Scary!!!
From sober elegance to couture Schwarzenegger!
I'm finding difficult to believe that such a change came only from the desire of being fashion-forward...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:03 AM) :

I seem to be the only one saying this here, but he looks much more accomplished and handsome 2 years ago--like a movie star. Now he looks like a homeless man who has lost weight and gained a beard. This isn't a positive change for him. It makes me wonder: is he unemployed/underemployed? On drugs? Divorced? Midlife crisis? The gang-bang hip hop look doesn't look good on middle age, people!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:45 AM) :

the man from two years ago looks soft spoken and innocent; the second two pictures, he looks as though he's seen the burning bush and come back to walk to streets of Manhattan.

(and forget Terrell Owens and check out the figure in the pink shirt in the background of pic #3. nice)

Blogger cami falcão said ... (11:25 AM) :

100% style

Blogger MARIA H said ... (11:39 AM) :

"He looks intelligent and approachable there"....Funny!I do desagreeif you mean the second and 3rd are oposite to that.
If it was for the first image, I would not like to aproach him, beacause the style is average, is even BORING. His look now says to me: this is sound style baby! he's a genious! That is for me more convincing than a tame man in glasses. Exelent example of style evolution.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:39 AM) :

i'm really not sure if he looks "older" in as much as he just looks completely different. i would want to listen to whatever he has to say.

i have to agree with the poster who said that a beard adds character. the funny thing is, he just looks confident in the last two photos.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:43 AM) :

are they the same guy? I'm only saying that since in the top pic he looked pretty you and in the bottom pic his beard is graying.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:54 AM) :

wow!! that is what taking risks is about, everything about him in the first photo is conformist. His change seems to emerge from within, a change of attitude. I think he is fabulous!! Very powerful. Rock on!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:07 PM) :

"... he lost so much weight and became so hard looking. He no longer has warmth and softness."

I once saw someone who perfectly embodies that quote and as with this subject, I would love to understand what happened in his life -within a 2 years span- to force such a transformation...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 PM) :

I'm most impressed that one person could have this many looks. The way he uses the vest for different effects in pics 2 and 3 is inspiring. I won't be copying this approach anytime soon but I applaud his sense.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 PM) :

Is there a story behind this? The transformation is so extreme, like two different people.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:24 PM) :

^just me--though i can understand your opinion that this man looks less approachable in his more recent looks, i can't imagine that he looks any less intelligent. to present himself in such a specific way reveals this man's intelligence as well as creativity, i think.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:41 PM) :

I love that he wears the same waistcoat in two very different ways/looks. Who knows? He could even be sporting it in the first picture under the scarf.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:44 PM) :

CHANGE

Those pink shoes look like they once were white. So cool. Did he color them himself?

This chap is a rock star.

-- desertwind

PS - Uhm, who's Terrell Owens?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

Love the last photo except for the Pepto-pink shoes. Visually, white bucs would have been a better selection, while still giving a little wink, in light of the cargo pants and other casual elements.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:34 PM) :

so hot i touched myself, several times.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:04 PM) :

what an amazing transformation!!!

Blogger Françoise said ... (3:23 PM) :

Sart, please, please give us some clues on why that man has gone thru such an amazing transformation, physically, stylistically, psychologically (it seems). :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:24 PM) :

I can't believe it's the same guy!!!
Anyway what really caught my eye is the bottom picture : the style is so worked up...yet so relax!
And the top picture of course : clever way of using a lined scarf...it's giving me ideas.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:42 PM) :

It's my first post - thanks Sart! you pictures are so beautiful, sometimes even amazing! you have a good eye for true style!
Now about the guy whom people think as TO - TO is probably most ribbed human being - and this guy look more like Magic Johnson.
All three picture show that thid guy have his own style and now his style is really unique - esp. the 3rd picture! Marvellous! Something like from 20. - someone coming or going on safari - classy and elegant, yet sporty and tough and this dandy shoes. Well done on the beard - I got a beard but not that long and bushy - maybe in 2 years? ;)

Blogger junglesiren said ... (4:13 PM) :

You are kidding me! Look how accommodating he looks at top. He's got a well-dressed-lawyer-on-the-weekend thing going and it works nicely. But then in the next two he is totally transformed into an artist and it's crazy sexy.

How interesting that in pic 2 the lady behind him has the Obama "Change" t-shirt on.... For these pictures "change" means a whole other thing.

Dude's personal style is hotter than July. Even Terrell has to check him to get a few pointers.

I love the accessories and even the rolled-up sleeves. They work with his beautiful arms.

And PINK SHOES!! This brotha rocks them in the manliest way one can.... It's definitely not a move for amateurs so I hope this doesn't start a trend.

A black, shaved-headed Leon Trotsky. My dream guy. If I see him on the street I will kiss him. He better watch out!

cargo pants?

Blogger Style Noir said ... (7:22 PM) :

Third photograph equals hotness.

TO and pal look hot, too. (Albeit a different kind of hot.)

Blogger The Spicers said ... (7:26 PM) :

Love Kevin Stewart's cool pink shoes, but who is Terrell Owens and why is everyone talking about him?

Blogger AnnaCatherineQ said ... (7:41 PM) :

that third picture is the epitome of old gentleman sexiness. beautiful beautiful, man, beautiful doesn't cover it!! LOVE IT

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:47 PM) :

Hello, hottie!
I love everything in the third picture, he just looks amazing.
And the beard suits him fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:36 PM) :

Wow, he looks amazing! He looked quite nice before, but he's developed a very unique and effective signature style in those two years that really make him stand out.

To the posters complaining that the beard makes him look older: I disagree, but even if it does--so what? What the hell is wrong with looking older? "Youth" and "style" are NOT synonymous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:23 PM) :

so sexy i got aroused!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:34 PM) :

commenting on the second photo: first off, i'm sorry but cargo pants are a no-no. secondly, the whole look is a little too overdone; too many bracelets, belt buckle, the chain, the beard, the rolled up sleeves, the pink shoes. that said, if he refined this look a bit it could be much more effective.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 PM) :

the force and deliberation/intent behind the change is shocking, overwhelming. a most fine example of how internal transitions are externalized? it is very encouraging to all those who look to fashion not only a set of stylistic choices, but as an art of expression.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 PM) :

YES! Finally a transformation that goes from boring to awesome instead of the other way around!

Blogger Candace said ... (10:29 PM) :

All I have to say is WOW to the difference in appearance! I wonder was there any reasoning for such a change. And how did you even recognize him the second time around?!?

He looks lovely in the first picture...you would never think he'd have tattoos!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:12 PM) :

Damn he's fine. I like his look a lot better now. He's got something going that's just hard to top.

..and I know it's been said, but he seriously does look so badass in the third one.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:38 PM) :

I'm thinking this man must be an artist. How he owns all three looks is quite telling.

What is the story?

Who is he?

Whoever he is, he should know that he is an inspiration to those who would second-guess their own attempts at originality.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:56 PM) :

The middle picture conjures daydreams of Spike Lee on 'roids and 'shrooms 20 years from now.

Blogger 1 said ... (12:24 AM) :

He looks good... I sometimes miss coats and warm clothes.

Blogger Joey said ... (1:36 AM) :

Wow.. I love all these looks, but that beard really ages him.

Regardless... this is a great before/after-ish post. Very interesting. Meanwhile, my look is beyond stagnant.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:21 AM) :

Wow, he went from classy and refined, to an old man going through a midlife crisis trying to look like a twenty year old, please, get away from the LA look and go back to the refinement of your past.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 AM) :

Such interesting development! He looks as if he speaks less and knows more in the third photo. Perhaps he was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit? (I had to invent a story for him...)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:12 AM) :

"He looks intelligent and approachable there", sorry, but i guess that is a reflection on what you consider to look/be intelligent and approachable. his transformation really does challenge that statement. and thank god the Sart still thought he looked "intelligent" and "approachable" even after the transformation in order to share this with us.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:37 AM) :

What an extreme case of transformation! But indeed a very nice one... the picture with the girl in the background having a Obama t-shirt saying just - Change is just CLASSIC!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:25 AM) :

I love people who turn everything up side down and CHANGE.
Inspiring !

Blogger momo said ... (10:42 AM) :

These "When First We Met" posts are like that early Russian experiment in film that illustrated the principle of montage: put two or three pictures in a sequence and people WILL make a narrative out of them!
I've always liked your shots where the subject is in motion, seemingly captured on the fly. These are great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

One word. Dope. I have to say the first picture is pretty status quo, but not that there's anything wrong with that. I prefer to see the boldness of the latter photographs. He's a bit of a street wear dandy in the latter two photos. Butter.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:11 PM) :

It's wonderful to see the evolution of people through their style changes. I myself have changed a lot through the last years, and I keep on my metamorphosis. I think the outfit is nothing but a way to show the world who you are. And the man in the pictures shows us how he's changed.
The last look is just brilliant, specially because of the sleeves and those incredible shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:42 PM) :

I absolutely LOVE the pink shoes.....

Blogger Rich said ... (3:23 PM) :

let's the get the negatives out of the way first: one tattoo would maybe be ok, but multiples plus bracelets is too much going on. nothing wrong with a bit of a wild beard but that one is a mess.

(oh and p.s. who is terrell owens? whoever he is, he dresses boring.)

on to the positives, love the multiple bracelets, the arms are definitely made for rolled-up sleeves, there are some people who can still get away with cargo pants, and love the pink shoes (ditto some people can get away with....)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:46 PM) :

BTW, if this is how "gay" men dresse, hetero guys could you please get on look and learn. This is stylish and hot.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:12 PM) :

the first thing that came to my mind was "jesus, how did he skip two decades in two years?". apart from that, in the last photo, the clothes looked so pulled together although exuding different themes. the tie/hard collar bit looked very business-like. then theres the rolled up sleeves which (if you ignore the collar/tie) would look like a holiday shirt. the waistcoat and the pants give a casual feel and the shoes.. very subtle and complementing. Very impressed.

Blogger discotheque confusion said ... (4:59 PM) :

seriously?
the transformation is incredible.
and even though the beard adds on about 20 years, he looks so much better with it.
or maybe it's just because it's so different..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:21 PM) :

Not to argue the points of this man's style evolution, but... does anyone else find the quiet sense of genuine kindness in the man's expression in the 1st photo just as appealing as the "badass" quality of his style in the 2nd two?

Blogger Kanani said ... (6:00 PM) :

What comes through now is his strength. It's wonderful.

Blogger Carla said ... (7:15 PM) :

Hi Mr. Sartorialist,

I am loving this new "When We First Met" series! I like seeing the style evolution of your subjects. Fashion can be ephemeral and definitive at the same time, so it is great to celebrate those contrasts!

I am laughing to myself right now, thinking of what I was wearing 2 years ago...oh dear!

Just assumed he moved to NYC 2years ago,
Look what nyc does to you!

I still love the city though...

"Perhaps he was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit? (I had to invent a story for him...)"

-anonymous from above

lol b/c he is a rugged black man, right? Nice, anonymous. Nice.
but anyway, good laaawwdy he is a whole lot of delicious! I love his use of jewelry and the pop and surprise of his pink shoes (and bright green hat). This man really knows how to dress, he has a presence all his own! Bravo for catching this on film.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 PM) :

coolest cat ever

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:30 AM) :

looking at the third picture again, i just realized that his shoes are not pink sneakers, but pink leather oxfords! that just elevated this look to a whole new level.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:10 AM) :

There is an insane amount of man candy in that last photograph.

Oh yes, and the gentleman -- wow. Just wow. I love what he's done here. And umm, c'mon you guys who are trying to make up a story for him -- clearly he's spent the last two years at the gym.

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (5:30 AM) :

what's his name? he's interesting.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:26 AM) :

I always think it weird that people all of a sudden want to change their style 180°. School kids yeah, but adults... Wonder what made it happen ?

Blogger VIVI said ... (6:27 AM) :

What a big difference, it's seems to me too much older.
Kisses
Vivi

Blogger Anastasia said ... (6:55 AM) :

i like 'two years' ago photo the best...but he does look a lot more confident in his style and pose now....i like these before and after shots!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:11 AM) :

He's in disguise....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:46 AM) :

180 people with incredibly bad taste.

Sad.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:16 AM) :

I'm with the minority. I don't like his transformation one iota. The beard...I just can't get over the glasses and beard . I fear that squirrels will come in the night and harvest bits with which to line their nests.
But, I do like his outfit in the last photo. What an attitude he brings to it, he's dandified, but at the same time so tough and contemporary.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:46 AM) :

Not only is that T.O. in the background but also Boris Diaw of the Phoenix Suns in the pink shirt and shorts.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:48 AM) :

I enjoy the uniqueness of all of his looks, but the bottom picture is great! The strong masculine look, yet classically dressed, The pink shoes are iffy for me, but I think all together he made it work. KUDOS

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:26 AM) :

So this is what happens when you move to NYC. :-P

My only thought is, are these all the same man?

The first picture is understated beauty. The second, is homeless chic. The third, is turn of the century (the last not the present)badd ass, which I like. Does it come in female lite/

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

For those of you who don't know who terrell owens is, I hope it is not because you feel that you are "above" sports. I really can't stand when fashion types feign a lack of interest and are proud to act as though they do not know who someone like terrell owens is.

Blogger John Danner said ... (12:14 PM) :

He went from kind of boring/conservative, to holy shit!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:08 PM) :

I think the same thing happened to him as mark jacobs...;)

Blogger Neil MacLean said ... (1:09 PM) :

That is WITHOUT QUESTION Terrell Owens. and good call on Boris Diaw whoever got that one.
Interesting change here...I'd like to hear what Scott has to say about it.

Blogger Niche said ... (1:45 PM) :

lol i guess i like boring and conservative looks. he looked good before. he looks really angry now... but he still looks really good. The detailing is great before and after. It's just very different and he looks A LOT older.

and no amount of gym time takes someone from conservative blazers to a complete 180 in style. Something must've provoked such a change. Although I would think it would be more accurate to compare winter vs winter or summer vs summer style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:45 PM) :

I dony know if anyone has noticed.. but isn't that Terrell Owens in the last pic?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:48 PM) :

I just don't get the appeal at all of the current presentation. Old homeless guy beard, pseudo-intellectual glasses, Hammer pants and tatoos? Just don't get how anyone fings this hot. Makes me happy to be bourgeois.
