Variations on a Theme, Milano

Blogger Sean Santiago said ... (8:59 AM) :

The style is great - but is it terrible of me to feel it's slightly age inappropriate...?

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (9:06 AM) :

OK, the proportions are perfect! The loose blouse (could it be a man's shirt? they are cheaper!!!) and the long pants make for a great summery ensemble, although only for the slim of frame. Since I do my own laundry, these pictures remind me of my "picturesque" Rotterdam side street where I lived- it would take a lot of scrubbing to clean the white pants! Love the looks of the guy in white shirt and jeans, and especially his bag; and no, I am not asking where he got it, I probably can't afford it. Jorge from W Palm Beach

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

The pants are way too long, looks strange and thus not very nice. Otherwise, it's a loose summery look. Looks airy and cool. /Tina

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:19 AM) :

I really like her shirt, but the pants... sorry, they don't work for me.

Blogger r.filgueira said ... (9:21 AM) :

santiago, the ladies don't have age...We are free to dress as we please not by ages - sex - colors

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:24 AM) :

I disagree with the previous statement.

Blogger The Spicers said ... (9:32 AM) :

She looks fantastic. I love the loose proportions and the ease with which she wears her button-downs. The necklace in the first photo is beautiful too!

Blogger Syed said ... (9:44 AM) :

I personally love the loose fabric and the colourful prints!

Blogger stacy said ... (9:48 AM) :

there is not much i 'want for' - but i think those pants might make my short list!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 AM) :

now she has style. wow. i really want to be her. she's my kind of gal. if anything is "wrong" about it, she makes it right b/c she owns it.
love her. thank you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:08 AM) :

I love her style, but I'm not sure that I like the shirt half-tuck thing. For one, I imagine it would not be flattering on anyone with wide-ish hips. Maybe I'll come around to it.

Blogger Serg Riva said ... (10:38 AM) :

The demi-tuck is not for amateurs... but once you've got it down...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:47 AM) :

Beauty has no age, She looks lovely. I hope my girlfriend is still that cool and sexy when we reach that age. Thanks for the picture!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:50 AM) :

This half-tuck as witnessed on two people in the first picture is just too silly for words.

It really reminds me of Grade 9 girls in front of a mirror in the school washroom.

These people are old enough to know better.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:57 AM) :

Great pants! I love red and white.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:11 AM) :

Anonymous 10:06 AM, I could not agree with you more. This is a woman whose style if fully developped and she rocks it in her own rite. This is 100% about style and 0% about fashion. LOVE IT!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:11 AM) :

A fabulous summer look - and that necklace in the first pic is very nice!

Blogger FOUNDfashion said ... (11:16 AM) :

That print reminds me of that fall floral collection by Tom Ford at Gucci- was it 97 or 98?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:18 AM) :

She's the director of Marieclaire Italia, isn't she?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:19 AM) :

Isn't she Michela Gattermayer?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:20 AM) :

Hm....There is something off here and I can't quite put my finger on it. I don't find it flattering though. I think her hair is very pretty and she needs to soften it up somehow someway...

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (11:22 AM) :

He looks great! Love her style!

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:27 AM) :

yes. her trousers need a little hemming, but she does this look justice. it just looks very easy, effortless and comfortable. her necklace in the first photo and her floral trousers are gorgeous.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:44 AM) :

the theme i'm seeing isn't the loose-shirt-tucked-into-pants notion, but rather, the red-pattern-on-white idea. not too keen on the billowing shirt and flared pants look, but the red-on-white is fun!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

She's the editor in chief of Velvet magazine, and she looks hot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

I prefer the first look, especially love the shirt. The over-long pants make it look like she has stubby feet or is on stilts, though. I'm not a fan of the print on her second pair.

Blogger Karen said ... (11:59 AM) :

I like pants a tad long, but not so long that they hide one's shoes. Not crazy about patterned pants, either. I do like the loose blouse and general drapey look on a slim frame. She carries it well.

Blogger so said ... (11:59 AM) :

LOVE it!
where can i find those printed pants??

Blogger John Danner said ... (12:05 PM) :

I'm more interested in the fit [and color] of the gentleman on the right's pant. (nice fit!)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:15 PM) :

I've been away in London for the week, but off the digital grid. This morning's coffee was spent trawling a week's worth of your postings. Many fine moments, but the payoff for my absence was not the fashion, but the beautiful faces you've caught lately, some of which are unforgettable.

Blogger António Erre said ... (12:23 PM) :

She looks fabulous and chic with The oversize linen male shirts. The "Madonna/Gucci pants" are totally inapropriate to cross the road, one might think. Nevertheless she proves one's totally wrong!
Great hippy pattern for the pants in red and white.
He looks nice in his royal blue light jeans and white nineteenth shirt. Sharp and defined!
Both look very self confident and confortable.
Style and "allure" are not unknown for them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:27 PM) :

Her execution isn't on for me... to me it looks ridiculous and pretentious. The side profile might be really bad. I'd feel much better about this look if I could see her shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:29 PM) :

Absolutely fabulous, she is up there with the Queens of fashion Anna, Carine, Giovanna, Agnes and the rest... she has her own thing going on and that's what matter.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:35 PM) :

In the first picture, she seems to be in shock at the sudden disappearance of her feet. Love the shirts though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:42 PM) :

i love the top variation, mostly because of the necklace (it inspires me to head to the jewelry wholesaler) and the cut of the pants.

Blogger Anne Corrons said ... (12:59 PM) :

Italian people always have a peculiar style. I love them!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:25 PM) :

I adore the half-tuck, but I wish her hair wasn't quite as severe!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 PM) :

its all nice except... those pants would simply be filthy after one day! That is why the length looks silly to me. otherwise good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:40 PM) :

i think she looks relaxed, yet together. fabulous! if her pants were hemmed it would look more clean but i don't think that's the look she was going for... i kinda like the comfortable length. my only negative - undergarments! a bra would have sold this for me :)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:33 PM) :

I think she looks chic. Is she anyone famous?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:59 PM) :

THANK YOU thank you thank you... I sometimes feel I wait weeks to see original, not-trendy fashion-y style and on someone over 20...fantastic!!!

Blogger emily said ... (3:20 PM) :

amazing as usual!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:09 PM) :

The fabrics look really nice. Great textures and colour combinations. Maybe it's just not my style and thus can't appreciate it, but I really do think she looks messy.

But that man with the blue trousers and white shirt - WOW!

Blogger KZL said ... (4:34 PM) :

Love the prints, hate the shoe-swallowing pant length. She looks like a 5-year old in overly large hand-me-downs. KZL

Blogger Unknown said ... (4:46 PM) :

No I don't get this style either. In theory is works but this is ill fitting. The trousers are too long and it makes the whole outfit look cheap and scally.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:07 PM) :

She is a breath of fresh air. I LOVE it. It is casual, classy, quirky, and sexy. It's not about a perfect hem, seeing her shoes. Her confidence tells the story, she's dressed as a memorable character.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:08 PM) :

So it seems that the half-tuck is en vogue again - in Italy, at least. I remember it the first time around, when I was in middle school in the mid-1980s (anyone else remember the Polo shirt with the half-tuck & the popped collar?). While I think it looks great on the people in these photographs, I hope this trend doesn't make it "across the pond". Can you imagine some overweight slob with baggy jeans & t-shirt trying this look on? I shudder to even think about it...

Blogger V said ... (6:04 PM) :

she seems to like long trousers... I have a feeling they create a much leaner and iconic look than the usual combination of hem and shoe...

at any rate, it's not a look for amateurs, I wouldn't dream to try it...

Blogger Snotty McSnotterson said ... (6:22 PM) :

I really love your blog--this is my first time here! I am also in love with that necklace, and the fabrics look comfortable. I know the flowery pants aren't everyone's idea of fashion-forward, but I think they're really interesting. The top photo is the best, though.

Blogger zuccotto said ... (6:24 PM) :

Only the lady to the left as we face the picture looks comfortable to me, re pant tightness.

I still enjoy the photo, particularly re the perhaps obvious play of fingers, which I trust is another example of Scott's comment re photography and anticipation.

I once saw a painting in a Lucca museum that, to me, was all about the hands, however subtlely, and this strikes me as a today-version of that.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:30 PM) :

Fine looking people! It's refreshing to see healthy looking, slim non-smoking individuals for a change. They're obviously not from Central California!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:53 PM) :

Things I like very much:

- the severe yet feminine hairstyle juxtaposed with the loose, mannish shirts
- the half-tuck--very practical on hot summer days!

Things not so much:

- pants that completely cover the foot always look a little daft to me
-especially when said pants are white and dirty around the hems

Blogger CULTURE CREATORS said ... (6:55 PM) :

I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:28 PM) :

she needs a tailor for the bottom of her daks...they'll look shabby in no time. otherwise, all good. like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:08 PM) :

The clothes have so much movement in themselves they look as though they're supposed to be on a mannequin...as though if she made one false move she'd disappear from view down into her shirt...Which give the sense that the outfit is wearing her, even though she has such a strong presence and style. Slightly unsettling therefore, but maybe that's a good thing, ya know?

Blogger vbd said ... (8:12 PM) :

i simply cannot get past the "elephant's foot" look of the pants hiding her feet, way too unflatering on my book, sorry

would have loved to see a clearer image of the gentleman to the right on the first picture, as i am guessing he has that oh so simple (jeans & shirt)look that is oh so hard to get right

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:17 PM) :

half tuck, pants length, great shirts, hair all cool... brassiere necessary!

I'm bumming though because although I love the pants length, I'm dying to see her shoes!

Blogger daltonmc said ... (9:04 PM) :

I think this looks sloppy and very 90s.

It looks like something she should wear to bed, not out.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:12 PM) :

the guy on the right in the first picture looks great too. love the shirt.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:29 PM) :

Am I the only one that finds her appearance to be trashy and clothes to be sloppy? The look with the solid color slacks would be better if it was a bit more refined, but I dislike the one with the crazy print. And her severe hair makes the clothes overwhelm her even further.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:36 AM) :

Pants are very chic but they are too long. It looks like she is wearing platforms and the whole look is too bottom heavy.

Blogger junglesiren said ... (1:53 AM) :

She looks good. Casual, comfortable -- like she digs being who she is.

I love the flower print pant. I have some myself but the cut on hers is much nicer than mine.... However, mine are hemmed properly.

I'm not a fan of the dragging pant leg. Seems to me one would have to discard the pants after a few wearings as the bottoms will be frayed and torn. I don't have that kind of wardrobe budget.

As for the demi-tuck.... to me it comes across as trying too hard to look casual. She doesn't look like a lady who needs to "try" at all.

What I dig most is her unreproachable coolness.

Blogger Catherine said ... (2:45 AM) :

I like the outfit (well maybe less-severe hair) until I get to the ankles. The too-long pants remind me of teenagers who scuff the back of their jeans because they're too lazy to get them taken up.

Love the half tuck, relaxed look though. Great to see colour!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:06 AM) :

very good style!!

Blogger Austin said ... (6:08 AM) :

no-belt is sharp. sometimes a waist looks bare without a belt.. other times, of course, a person's pants need some help. no belt, if it looks okay, always strikes me as tailored/carefully chosen sizing, which is a good thing.. at least it adds versatility

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:11 AM) :

She's a famous style journalist, Michela Gattermayer… but the trousers are too long, for me.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:00 AM) :

Are those red n whites Tom Ford? I like her take better than his

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:09 AM) :

i know this is totally random and off topic, but the guy in the white shirt and blue pants is pretty hot!!!

Blogger Fabio Bucciardini said ... (10:14 AM) :

Brava!

Signora Gattermayer il suo stile mi piace un casino,
e qui il suo modo di indossare la camicia è WOW.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:27 AM) :

i am loving that necklace in the top image, how great does that look with her minimal and casual look. nice detail!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

I am loving her necklace in the top image, her casual style with that pop detail is great!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:04 PM) :

Sorry, but I think she has chosen clothes to make a statement, not because they flatter her. I'm not fond of the color combinations, think the pants are one of those exaggerated looks that teenagers get into, and the half tuck of the shirt just looks contrived. Also, the oversize clothes with that tight hairdo makes her head look too small.

I have the feeling we'll see this oh so trendy "new" and "directional" look a lot this summer and then it will wind up in the closet with all of last summer's cute little baby doll dresses.

The contrast with the pictures of "Darcy in Milan & Paris" and her "quiet chic" says it all.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:31 PM) :

i love her look - the half tuck shirt
(perfectly executed) and the over long pants contrasting with her severe hair and make-up are cool and original. Sart, your eye is unerring, thanks.

Blogger Alicia said ... (3:11 PM) :

The first ensemble works much better because of the shirt - it isn't falling off her backwards, as you see in the second shot. The colors work so well in both images, and the style is flattering to her. However, the slacking shirt just makes me uncomfortable in the second shot. (Maybe it's the fact that you don't see a bra strap, that makes me question how age-appropriate she dresses...)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:24 PM) :

Love the red & white printed pants with the exaggerated, dust catching hem.

But the half-tuck is not flattering, particularly when worn braless and unbuttoned so far. Her sloping shoulders, while great for strapless dresses, make the shirt ride back awkwardly so it looks like her clothes are falling off..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:38 PM) :

Quite the trio, really.
Wish I had the gentleman's pants (and bag)!
Clean colors, not too matchy. Love the look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:53 PM) :

She looks like she would be great to have around, to work for - full of drive and ideas.

ALthough the voluminous clothes/tight hair work against the delicacy of her face, overall the impression she gives is of energy, purpose, creativity and sex.

She is a risk taker.

Blogger designerman said ... (11:24 PM) :

I love the idea of loose men's shirts. Looks refreshing after tops being so fitted or super feminine.

But I have a hard time getting past HER. She seems to be in mid-statement both times - and enthralled with herself. Can't be easy to work with...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:02 AM) :

Age appropriate.
Age inappropriate.
"sean santiago" please note that those words are not in effect anymore.
Sometimes I wish they were - but most of the time I appreciate the freedom to live without them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:15 AM) :

totally loving the necklace she has on the first photo!!! can someone ID it, please?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 AM) :

I really think tucking in shirts in front and leave the back out is soooooo OUT. It doesn't even look good. It seem like the person is trying so hard to be something..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:51 AM) :

I'm afraid I must agree with whoever already said "ridiculous and pretentious." And the pants length makes her look as though she has no feet.

Blogger Allen - East Hampton said ... (1:13 PM) :

incredible, effortless chic; practicality be damned!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:49 PM) :

It's "HER"-- it's her style. I love it. It kills me when people pick a person's style apart with "oh it's not practical" or "pretentious!" "she should hem her pants" "I would wear a softer hair-do"-- the point is that it's her style and if it were more convential, it wouldn't be style, let alone HER style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:08 PM) :

Adore the red and white floral pants. The pale blue button down compliments them quite well!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:09 AM) :

I absolutely LOVE her overall look! She definitely has style. She has the confidence to be a little different, particularly with the proportions. I especially like her bold colorful necklace in the top picture. It looks like something designed by Tina Frey.

www.tinafreydesigns.com

Does anyone know where the pants are from?

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (5:15 AM) :

Wide shirt + Wide pants = not a fan. Those pants look defenetly too wide and baggy for me. However, this lady wears her clothes beautifuly, I love the look of an oversized, well ironed good shirt! Gorgeous! I also like the rings and the colier that she is wearing in pic #1.

I also like the idea of recreating the same formula in differant ways, even the head band is present in both pictures. A very strong and clever way of creating a style identity!

Blogger CriolloGlam said ... (1:56 PM) :

Over all...I love that she manages to pull out a Style of her own... XL shirts and huge boot pants!...lol.I think is great what she is doing with her shirts the way she pull them back and tuck them in front...thats very inspirational...Tha's what we are triying to find in this blog isn't it?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:25 PM) :

I think she's so pretty! She walks this good line between severity and frivolity--plain hair pulled back/vivid lipstick; colourful necklace/neutral linen; sloppy fit/neat lines of her frame; youthful sensibility/lined face. She embodies the word "smart" in all its shades of meaning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:50 AM) :

strong personality! fantastic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:10 PM) :

LOVE the man's pants. Could they be Polo?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:17 PM) :

just wondering if i am a size 12 top adies (aus) what size mens shirt would i wear for that perfect oversized but not omg whats with the shirt look?
