Seriously....

I've been seeing a lot of pretty cool gentleman wearing pushed-up sleeves.

Milan Vukmirovic
Kanye West

Comments on "Seriously...."

Blogger Diana said ... (9:00 AM) :

It doesn´t look bad at all.
I suppose, the jacket has to be of a very very good material, otherwise, it will look awful when you pull the sleeves down again.

Blogger Dan in Richmond said ... (9:16 AM) :

Well your honor, exhibit one is a fair argument for your case, exhibit two less convincing (unless the polo is considered circumstantial).

Blogger *L said ... (9:17 AM) :

I think Kanye has died and gone to heaven.. he's been featured :) I bet pushed up sleeves looks hot on ladies too! Are you seeing any of that?

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (9:27 AM) :

It works on some guys, perhaps? My cuffs than unbutton I just give them a little flip, just to be snobbish and show off the craftsmanship. I do wonder what we are going to think of Mr. West's outfits in 5 years- I have commented on that before, and this outfit here confirms my suspicions. Jorge from W Palm Beach

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:33 AM) :

I agree with diana (9:00AM). The sleeves would be crushed if it were an off the rack jacket.

What I don't get is, if it's so hot, why are they even wearing a jacket to begin with? They must be sweatin' out a pitt storm!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:44 AM) :

milan looks amazing. i love him and his work. :)

Blogger The Spicers said ... (9:48 AM) :

Milan looks fabulous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:51 AM) :

Maybe because it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere? This would look more out of place in cooler weather, I think. Also, a jacket adds finish, and scrunching the sleeves can take that down a notch.

You can definitely tell from his outfit that Kanye is a child of the 80s!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:54 AM) :

I like his style...its urban chic, but I'm quite sure he knows how to turn up the volume...

Very casual and laid back- keep up the great work Mr. Sartorialist...

JAC

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:55 AM) :

Is that a "Toy Watch" Kanye is wearing?
Like the rolled up sleeves but wearing a shirt and jacket in the same grey doesn`t do anything for me.

Blogger a. said ... (9:57 AM) :

Kayne is quite dapper.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:59 AM) :

Ya that is true would have to be great material. Its def. a great casual summer look. Keepin' it practical on those hot days!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:18 AM) :

i love this outfit on kanye west. super cool starry polo, pushed up sleeves, and the great retro watch..

though it is very much on the brink of "too much of a rich rapper type of style", i really like the way he dresses himself in general. i think it's very unique - neither grisly blingbling orgy (jay-z and co) nor most expensive wins (pharrell).

why not jump on the original miami vice motorboat, kanye, you would make it sparkle again! :)

and sart, it's definitely time to push up the sleeves (in case you were wondering)

Blogger meow said ... (10:34 AM) :

Pushed-up sleeves on both shirts and especially blazers/jacket have been quite a hit since Julianne Moore did it at Cannes this year. Since Moore crunched the sleeves of her blazer over an elegant dress, Anne Hathaway and Ashley Olsen have also also followed suit. It's great to see that this style is perfect for both men and women.

It's rather chic but the push-up gives off a more casual effect.

Blogger Will Anderson said ... (10:50 AM) :

I love this look, most people couldn't pull it off but I think it is great. Someone was giving the polo a hard time but to me that is what really makes the outfit unique and that is what fashion is really about right? Also the pocket square is a great touch.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:07 AM) :

Someone needs to give Nash Bridges some recognition for planting the seeds of this fashion irony.

Blogger -ONE-PUCK- said ... (11:17 AM) :

Pulled up sleeve definitely a catalyst to show personality, it bring up quirkiness for the youngish type (imagine trucker hat/ wayfarer shade), but it will express the coolness/confident for the mature typed.

It work if you have the ball.

Kayne is sporting a repro of early 90s Casio G-Shock..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:19 AM) :

The picture of Mr Vukmirovic convinces me pushed up sleeves can work - when it is part of a whole look. the smooth curves of his jacket, the scarf, the pants with sockless shoes are wonderful, the pushed up sleeves look natural and modern. this is one of my favourite photos of recent weeks - how many men can look that good and as if they're not even thinking about it?

Blogger Barbara said ... (11:24 AM) :

Kanye is always stylish!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 AM) :

Kudos to Kanye (or to his stylist) for combining the the pop and prep notes of the eighties so fluidly. Very difficult to accomplish, indeed.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:42 AM) :

Is there a reason why you chose not to include what shoes Mr. West was wearing in this photo?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:45 AM) :

Wow. The first gentleman is all about style with a creative flair. Love how he tied (literally) it all together. Simply beautiful.

Blogger Pamcasso said ... (11:52 AM) :

Kanye looks amazing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:56 AM) :

to nitpick, i think you've judged jay-z wrong, meow. he actually pretty much lives in expensive suits. although i understand the general point about the bling look.

kanye looks great.

Blogger SpanishGent said ... (11:59 AM) :

Both outfits are stylish, but completely different in style, one is classier and the other one is more of a rapper tipe "over-the-top". I personally prefer the first one and would never wear the second one but it is simply a matter of choice, personality and knowing oneself. One must always keep in mind that true style is never about fashion but about being truthful to one's essence.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 PM) :

i would agree with an above commenter- i would imagine you would either have to wear the sleeves pushed up all day or have an awesome material to keep from wrinkling. regardless, i think it's a wonderful little idea. and Kanye West is easily the best dressed male celebrity icon i have seen in years.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:11 PM) :

I've been following Kanye since his introduction to the hip hop game... he has been wearing his sleeves up on blazers and sportcoats for a while now.. even on the occaissonal leather jacket. Very M.J circa 1988

Blogger Keisha Kornbread said ... (12:14 PM) :

You guys are all wrong. He's wearing the White Ceramic Watch by Nixon.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:23 PM) :

If Kanye is a gentleman then the term has lost all meaning.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:28 PM) :

such an affectation

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:35 PM) :

Kanye proves his baller qualities.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:39 PM) :

i had to laugh just a little at the notion that somehow, a low cut tshirt, short pants, and a blingy gold watch are actually classier than a polo with blue stars in it. I think they are both examples of playful outfits that work well. i like that kanye's seems like an interesting take on americana.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:01 PM) :

I love the play on colors...It's a very casual chic summer look!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:14 PM) :

Sart,

Did you ask Kanye who made that jacket? Its fantastic.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:22 PM) :

Mr. Vukmirovic is perfection. Such a great sense of style: Conservative colors worn in a most unconventional way-- the gray cropped pants worn with the navy shawl-collared cropped blazer and sockless capped-toe oxfords results in a strong and brillaint silhouette. And the perfection of this man's style doesn't stop there; the gray vest (or wide-necked tee) and skinny scarf are such beautiful substitutes for a shirt and tie. His look is masculine, strong, unconventionally classic, effortlessly chic, and most importantly, never fussy. Pure, unadulterated style.

Thank you for sharing Sart!

Blogger Rico said ... (1:32 PM) :

Sorry, this was bad when Sonny Crockett did it on Miami Vice in the 80's and it hasn't become a better idea with time. I do enjoy the color combinations in both photos though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:37 PM) :

I like pushed-up sleeves, I do it a lot.

Blogger Maggie May said ... (2:12 PM) :

Kanye looks delicious. I love the red in the pocket, and the stars.

Blogger Paolo Manaloto said ... (2:13 PM) :

its great how kanye can make brands like a bathing ape and g-shock and incorporate them into something that looks chic.

Blogger Unknown said ... (2:43 PM) :

how a trend that was so associated with the eighties somehow makes new clothes look fresh and modern, is beyond me ...but I've found myself doing it too.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:48 PM) :

I disagree with the whole " he looks like the average rapper" thing, he's obviously willing to try new things and truly has a style of his own.

Blogger wilsonreps said ... (2:51 PM) :

Milan can do no wrong in my book, seems to be following in the footsteps on Tom Ford. As for Ye' the look is sharp but a little boring, and imho there's nothing in his look that references hiphop "bling". Note: I believe the watch is a Bape/G-Shock collaboration.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:52 PM) :

what i find oh so humorous is when we have an artist which Kanye is, they are still naysayers that tend to disrespect the culture of hip hop and the culture of black america. Oddly enough, many things considered cool stem from black culture and or the hip hop culture and many european designers run with it and it then it is embraced by major media. Can someone say BAPE?
I love Kanye and Jay- z and Phareel fro all their flash and in your face stunna from the gutta looks! It can't be done by anyone else!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:08 PM) :

My, wouldn't it be something to just run into Kanye West on the street? I don't know if I'd recover.

Blogger Fernando said ... (3:10 PM) :

Ill be nice, see why shoe Kayne wearing...

Blogger Miguel said ... (3:17 PM) :

On photo #1: Dark colors are popular at home, in the caribbean. You'll see guy's dress in all black pretty commonly. I like wearing all black or shades of dark grey but not in a hole suit.

On Photo #2: Everytihng looks good to me but the polo shirt... Couldn't he made it a different one?

Good shots any how... Aways love visitng your site. It reflects variety.

Blogger Karen said ... (3:17 PM) :

I'd like the first better if it included a shirt with a collar and some socks. As it is, it has the "Gasp! Your husband! I must run, darling!" look -- not quite pulled together yet.

I'm still thinking over the printed polo shirt with the giant stars. The general outfit is nice, but those stars give me pause.

Blogger Josh Tengan said ... (3:45 PM) :

kanye keeps up with the fashion blog world too

Blogger eye five style said ... (4:03 PM) :

On here, as well as on Schumann's exclusive's for men.style.com, Kanye has been featured a great deal lately. You know he loves it.

Blogger Sir Bentonius said ... (4:06 PM) :

Wow these two both look sharp
Milan gets the win, and even though I'm not a fan of the summer scarf usually, he can pull it off

Kanye gets -1 for the polo but +2 for the awesome pocket pocket square
Props!

Blogger Ryan said ... (4:30 PM) :

I love the look of pushed up sleeves. His navy blazer looks rich. I like the color combo of navy, grey and black.

Blogger octavio cayeta said ... (4:31 PM) :

Milan is a mix of fashionable, hot and sexy man.
Kanye looks fabolous wearing those blue stars. His polo is kind of chanel S/S collection alternative and his sun glasses makes him look extreamely hot.
-2 hot words in this message, I guess I am the male version of Samantha Jones, the Sex and the City star-

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:51 PM) :

i heart milan.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:05 PM) :

rolled up sleeves have been a personal favorite for a long time, especially with stuff that has a militaristic/uniform tinge to it (safari/flak jackets, shirts with shoulder straps, some sports coats etc). it looks 'active'.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:31 PM) :

Oh I love Kanye's style, always have. He adores fashion and he has a great eye for color. I even love the fact that he comes across as so arrogant. It just works.

Blogger ebeenso said ... (5:46 PM) :

It has been said, but not enough: Milan looks great.

I like the "pushed-up sleeve" look. It adds a very negligent and yet sexy aura to a guy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:18 PM) :

With or without clothes, I'd take either one of them gladly! Woof.

Blogger Unknown said ... (6:51 PM) :

Love his style....someone commented at 10:18 "too much of a rich rapper type of style" ...not true, he INVENTED that rich rapper guys style.

what him and Pharrell are doing lately, as well as what Louie Vuitton and Takashi Murikami are doing with their new monogramouflage is exactly what the fashion world needs. A nice combination of street cotour and high end design. Kanye's killin it with the Bathing Ape polo and G-Shock paired up with the nice, summer suit look.

you can tell that the jacket breathes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:22 PM) :

I like both gentlemen's outfits but I have to disagree with some of the comments here. Mr. West's outfit is very atypical of most rappers. They tend to stay in oversized shirts and pants most of the time. Except for a select few, Mr. West included, most rappers don't have a whole lot of variety.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:53 PM) :

mr. west is too fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:00 PM) :

Kanye often acts like a douche, but that outfit is FIERCE !

Blogger pearlaceous said ... (9:49 PM) :

Wow! I love what Kanye's wearing! I love the fact that his t-shirt is the same color as his pushed up jacket. Very cool indeed.. I like the combination of a polo and a jacket, casual yet chic.. And the white pants and watch make his outfit look perfect for summer..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:50 PM) :

now that's STYLE! hell yeah!!! love the colors!

Blogger Ridonkulus said ... (10:19 PM) :

It's got to be because I'm seasoned, cuz haters give me them salty looks. Lawry's.

I think people criticize Kanye because he's so cocky. It's a sharp outfit and he knows he looks good. I agree with the earlier commenter, a different colored jacket would've made it pop, maybe navy. His preppy style doesn't clash with the rapper thing. Andre 3000 pulled those looks off (Farnsworth dressed him of course, but he's a stylist not a rapper).

Blogger TIG said ... (10:36 PM) :

Very Miami, and very cool.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 PM) :

if kanye had a polo w/o the BAPE stars one would call the look rather conservative, so please stop calling it bling or hip-hop etc. the man likes to add a little flair to the preppy look...he didn't grow up in Greenwich, CT.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:40 PM) :

I think it's a great look! Milan Vukmirovic is very sexy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:03 AM) :

It looks good, no doubt about it. But still smells a tad too much 80s Miami Vice.

And that's never great.

Blogger Giuseppe said ... (12:15 AM) :

We seem to be stuck in a late 80's ironic re-hash these days. I for one thought it was ugly then, and I find it even uglier in its current euro-hipster, "i'm cooler than you because my clothes are ugly on purpose" second coming.

I do like Kanye, though. I always thought he was cool.

Blogger MELI. said ... (12:47 AM) :

mr fancy pushed up sleeves over there almost ran jill sander outta business. he still looks mighty sharp though.

Blogger ecw said ... (2:12 AM) :

I usually don't think Mr. West always looks that fashionably amazing, but he is looking so fine here! His ensemble is so well put together. How he can make a polo with stars look so classy, I will never know!

Blogger Tony T. said ... (2:36 AM) :

Polo/Bathing Ape/G Shock/Gucci/Polo... gotta love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:44 AM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:53 AM) :

It upsets me that his style is so impressive when his personality is so unpleasant. But Kanye looks great, as usual.

Blogger Merde said ... (4:15 AM) :

im sorry, but kanye w. doesnt NOT get fashion. he trys too hard to be something he will never be .. (AUWCHHH!)

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (5:09 AM) :

I told you! Sleeves like that are a must!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:10 AM) :

Hello,
I am sorry but the push up sleeves deal does not work for my taste!

- It reminds my of the not so glorious days of Miami Vice, as far as fashion trends are concerned!

- It looks like those guys are going to shampoo somebody's hair !!!

Keep up your good work, however, since your site is like taking a trip !!!

Blogger nyc/caribbean ragazza said ... (7:10 AM) :

I like both pic. Very different styles but they work for these men.

Sometimes Mr. West works my last nerve but I love that he is very much into fashion and does his own thing. I'm a big fan of the preppy meets hip/hop style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:35 AM) :

It's a casio g-shock watch that Kanye West is wearing. Cool outfit too

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:55 AM) :

I CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT get into this pushed-up sleeves business. It just irks me. Something about the proportions, perhaps. It's too studied and deliberate. It smacks of a lack of authenticity or originality.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

One word springs to mind...."contrived"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:31 AM) :

I did this in the 80s. I certainly don't want to do it again. Too many people thought I was with Miami Vice.

Blogger Rich said ... (10:57 AM) :

don't like kanye's outfit at all; too much going on and it's not coordinated. especially the hot red hankie and the cheesy wristwatch. and the belt works against that shirt.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:00 AM) :

Milan Vukmirovic most definitley takes the cake here. He looks so comfortable and "sexy" in his attire! Kanye's outfit just looks silly to me. I would rather see him in a more "grown up" outfit. The "toy" watch and the star shirt ruin it for me. Of course he is hansome no matter what he puts on. Both men as obviously enjoying fashion which is a good thing.

Blogger ricola said ... (11:01 AM) :

A tuxedo jacket during the day! Very nice!

Blogger Fabio Bucciardini said ... (12:19 PM) :

I love Kanye and I love the stars on his polo.

The pushed up sleeve trend has come with the return of the 80's in the last few years. It was shown on Donna Karen's runway on 04'/05' as well as many others, and is now a common look for fashion-consious people.

Fashion is a form of self-expression. I think both of these gentleman look amazing. Suited to their own style- thier own look- and their own interpretation of the trends.

Love it. Milan looks very sexy/cool. And as a fellow child of the 80's- I've always been a fan of Kanye's style. Love how he breaks the mold- and mixes it up into a new innovative look that suits him perfectly.

Blogger hermesheels said ... (1:15 PM) :

about 2 years ago the homeless, ivy-educated, schizophrenic man-about-town, with whom i keep occasional conversation, started wearing natty '50s sport coats and pushing up the sleeves. he looked dope (and i told him that).
he's always been a bit of a trend setter, as i've often advised friends to record his style.
nice work, bill. kanye owes you.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:03 PM) :

Kanye West is a label whore. Yeah, I said it. Nothing he wears looks good, it's all about the elitist appeal of designer fashion. And it rarely ever works.

Very disappointed at seeing him on The Sartorialist. Hoping this wasn't some ploy by Kanye's people to further brand him as a "fashion icon." It's bad enough he's already in your face in those stupid Absolut subway ads...

Blogger jessicawhitley said ... (2:38 PM) :

I love the shirt.. it's unexpected.
Just my personal opinion.

The first guy, looks incredibly hot. haha.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:31 PM) :

Love both looks - Milan's is maybe more relaxed and without artifice, however Kanye's more studied look has the red kerchief in the breast pocket. Only one comment on the colour in the whole 84 comments but if you take that itsy bit of colour the ensemble would collapse. Does anyone agree?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:26 PM) :

In response to Anon 2:52
I very much disagree with you. First of all BAPE doesn't "belong" to hip hop or black culture because it's strictly Japanese. Celebrities such as Pharrell and Kanye adopted the look and mainstreamed it in the U.S. so they're kinda style biters. As nice as they dress they look to the far east for inspiration as well as many of your European designers. Sorry. . .

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:30 PM) :

In response to katie who called out Kanye as a "label whore... Nothing he wears looks good, it's all about the elitist appeal of designer fashion." You are so right on Katie: Kanye is a talented artist who obviously loves fashion, but his arrogance and constant reminder to everyone that he's the "Louis Vuitton Don" in designer labels does not make him a stylish individual or fashion icon-- just a label whore.

For stylish individuals, look no further than the pic of the gentleman shown right above Kanye, or the pics of the chic lady right below him...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:10 AM) :

How did a celebrity like West even get on here? I thought this was devoted to street fashion. I can see celebrity photos on ten million other websites. I want to see what 'real' people are wearing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

I love kanye, he is so effortlessly chic and sexy but hey that is me!

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:17 PM) :

Menswear is harder- so detail oriented. Milan's combination of multiple elements is so effortlessly subtle- I am inspired.
Kanye's pocket square is cheeky- and that star-lightning print is sweet.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:14 AM) :

SO gaudy. The man can't dress

Blogger dandy nihilism said ... (1:48 PM) :

Milan's ensemble is wonderful. The abysmally blue jacket with svelte lapels. Although it appears to be too warm for summer he cools it down with the v-necked top, rolled sleeves, and almost too short slacks.

Kanye's outfit is a mixed bag. It is a smart melange of styles but the polo shirt does not work. The pattern and material mentally queues Old Navy five dollar special. And how it matches the jacket is not inspired. Love the jacket however especially with the bright pocket accent and rolled sleeves.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:45 PM) :

kanye is wearing a bapex. (to answer the toy watch question)

Blogger pearlaceous said ... (6:53 PM) :

To all the people who are focusing on who he is, that is not why The Sartorialist put him up there. Judge him for his style like all the other people, this is what this website is about! Whether he's Kanye West or a regular man, he sure does have an amazing elegant sense of style and this is what matters!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:56 PM) :

I don't like Milan's casual look...everything seems to work around the collarless shirt. Maybe it would've looked nicer without the scarf, but then the outfit would've been articles of clothing just thrown together. The shades are all too dark for me. Perhaps if the scarf was a different tone?

And I love Kanye and his sense of style. His outfit here is great, but I cannot help but dislike his shirt. The star pattern seems far too gaudy.

In anycase, both men are wearing absolutely orgasmic sunglasses. And the cocky downturned, lips are too much to handle. Whether I like the outfits or not, they both look amazing. Kudos to them for being able to carry their fashions so confidently. That is the most difficult and most important feat.

Blogger Karmander said ... (2:24 PM) :

The problem with putting celebrities on this blog is that people have predisposed notions of "who this person is" and can not take the outfit at face value. I take the fact that this is Kanye West, I put it to the side and ask myself "why did the sartorialist put him here? And from there, I formulate my opinion. That said, this look shows a lot of thought. The stars keep it playful. I too have issues with the double grey, and I considered whether I'd prefer a white polo with stars...then I realize it's not the 4th of July and that would look silly. Even ON the 4th of July, that would look silly. No, this is the best option for what it is.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:03 AM) :

Rolled up sleeves have been a soothing companion for those with long arms wearing sleeves that do not hit the wrists properly...

Although Mr. West's outfit is indeed a visual treat, under additional scrutiny there seems to be a bit of discrepancy in the execution. It seems a bit...off

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:20 AM) :

It's funny to me that the people who "despise" Mr. West so much know more about him and his outfit than those who think he's a breath of fresh air. I guess haters love to study what they don't understand...

Anyway, IMO, Mr. Vukmirovic's look comes off a bit studied. I know he's a tastemaker and whatnot, but so much of his outfit is an "of the day" reference as far as men's fashion that he looks as if he's a trend report illustration instead of a macaroni. One of those statement pieces removed and he'd look amazing. Who ever gets anything 100% right anyway?

Also, comparing the two looks, I'd say Mr. West's look is far more natural in his case. I imagine him just picking that straight out of his wardrobe in the swank boutique hotel he's staying in and gliding straight out to the shows. Almost no thought put into it because he's been thinking about it since before he got on the plane.

I'm going to risk sounding 100 years old but I have to say it.

PEOPLE! Disagreeing does not equal hating. Hate, haters, hating are very strong words.

I think they these words are used to stop people in their tracks from expressing their own opinions, which is very bad.....

Well, it's summer. With the right shirt both these looks would work good sleeves-down, but it's too hot for that.
